In most cases, gigantomastia is caused by an excess of circulating hormones or by the hypersensitivity of mammary tissue to normal hormone stimulation. Medical therapies to treat gestational gigantomastia are unpredictable in outcome. Breast reduction or mastectomy with delayed reconstruction is the preferred surgical procedure. If the mother is considering future pregnancies, mastectomy offers the lowest risk of recurrence.
