Article Decreased Serum Adenosine Deaminase Activities in Van Cats With Feline Retroviruses Infections(2007) Altuǧ, N.; Yüksek, N.; Aǧaoǧlu, Z.T.; Özkan, C.This aim of the study was to determine the activity of ADA serum and isoenzyme in feline retroviral infections. The study involved 6 FeLV seropositive, 4 FIV seropositive and 10 healthy seronegative cats aged between 1-8 years. Haematological, serum enzyme acivity (AST; ALT; ALP; GGT) as well as ADA serum and isoenzyme activity were determined in all the cats. Haematological parameters were within the normal range except for the platelet count in FIV seropositive cats (p<0.05). Serum enzyme activity was unchanged except for the AST concentration in FeLV and FIV seropositive cats compared to the healthy subjects. ADA serum and ADA1 concentrations were lower in the seropositive group than in the seronegative group. However, the decrease in ADA serum and ADA1 concentrations in FIV seropositive cats (p<0.01) was more significant than that of FeLV seropositive cats (p<0.05). In conclusion, decreased ADA and ADA1 activity in feline retrovirus infections may be significant.Article Evaluation of Serum Cobalt, Copper, Iron, Calcium, Phosphorus and Magnesium Concentrations in Cattle Naturally Infected With Theileria Annulata(Ataturk Universitesi, 2017) Denizhan, V.; Kozat, S.; Özkan, C.; Tuncer, S.S.The purpose of this study was to evaluate serum albumin, glucose, calcium (Ca), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), and phosphorus (P) in cows with naturally infected with Theileria annulata. The material of this study was a total of 15 cattle with different ages, breeds and genders diagnosed as theileriosis according to clinical and microscopical examination. According to statistical analyses of biochemical parameters; serum glucose, Ca, Co, Cu, Fe, Mg, and P concentrations were detected significantly low in cattle with theileriosis (P<0.001). In conclusion; mineral substance levels were altered in cattle naturally infected with Theileria annulata. Additionally to the classical treatment of theileriosis, administering mineral supplements including Ca, Co, Fe, Cu, Mg, and P to the animals is thought to be more useful in treatment.Article Oxidative Stress in Calves With Enzootic Pneumonia(TUBITAK, 2020) Özbek, M.; Özkan, C.This study was performed to evaluate the oxidative stress in calves with enzootic pneumonia. Ninety calves that were 2–6 months old were used in this study. Ten of these calves were healthy and used as the control group, while 80 were diagnosed with enzootic pneumonia according to the clinical examinations. The biochemical results showed that total oxidant status (TOS), nitric oxide (NO), malondialdehyde (MDA), and sialic acid (SA) levels were higher in calves with enzootic pneumonia than in the control group. While there was a statistically significant increase in TOS, MDA, and SA concentrations, there was not any statistically significant change at NO levels. Furthermore, a statistically significant decrease was observed in total antioxidant status (TAS), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and catalase (CAT) concentrations. Oxidative stress index (OSI) was calculated after TOS and TAS concentrations were obtained and it was detected to be high, but not statistically significant. In conclusion, according to these results, severe oxidative stress was detected in calves with enzootic pneumonia. These results reveal that oxidative stress may have a role and contribution in the occurrence of the disease and the obtained results might contribute to further studies. Besides, it is concluded that antioxidant supplements would be beneficial for supporting the routine treatment of the disease. © TÜBİTAK.Article Serological Investigation of Maedi-Visna in Sheep With Chronic Respiratory Disease in Erbil, Iraq(Ataturk Universitesi, 2017) Hamza, L.A.; Özkan, C.Maedi-Visna is a chronic and progressive viral disease most commonly seen in adult sheep. Disease is characterized by progressive interstitial pneumonia and/or neurological manifestations. The aim of this study is to serologically reveal the presence of Maedi-Visna in adult sheep in Erbil province in Iraq, which is an important area of sheep farming and also to investigate the prevalence of Maedi-Visna disease in sheep with chronic respiratory problems. Blood samples were obtained from 100 male and female Awassi sheep between 2 and 8 years old which were suffering from chronic pneumonia. The samples were obtained from the different locations in the city of Erbil and its provinces (Hawler, Dashti Hawler, Maxmur and Xebat) between January and April 2016. Blood samples were analysed for Maedi-Visna by using ELISA method in laboratory. According to the analysis, of 100 samples; positive, suspected and negative results were determined as 65%, 3% and 32%, respectively. Seropositivity increased with regard to age and it was determined higher in ewes. Highest seropositivity was determined in Hawler. Clinical findings such as emaciation, coughing, dyspnea, mastitis and paralysis were detected considerably high in the animals. As a result, Maedi-Visna was observed in animals with chronic respiratory system disease with high rate in Iraq-Erbil region. As this is the first study performed in the region related with Maedi-Visna, we believe that this study will provide a basis for the further studies in the region.
