Chronic otitis media (COM) is associated with impairments in language development and communication, poor quality of life, and severe complications. It includes chronic inflammation and immunologic mechanisms. IL-18 also is involved in chronic inflammation and inflammatory conditions. This study aims to examine the association of IL-18 gene-137 G/C and-607 C/A polymorphisms with COM. The study included 195 COM patients and 185 healthy individuals. DNA isolation was performed according to the Poncz method and polymorphisms were identified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The COM group was divided into two groups according to presence/absence of cholesteatoma. Genotype frequencies for IL-18-137 G/C polymorphism were 42.56% GG, 45.13% GC, and 12.31% CC in the COM group, and 42.70%, 43.78%, and 13.52% in the control group (p=0.88, p=0.73). For IL-18-607 C/A, frequencies were 41.54% CC, 37.44% CA, and 21.02% AA in COM, compared to 41.62%, 32.97%, and 25.41% in controls (p=0.58, p=0.48). No significant differences were found, but-137 CC and-607 AA genotypes were associated with reduced COM risk. Although no statistically significant association was found,-137 CC and-607 AA genotypes may have a protective role in COM. These findings highlight the potential role of genetic factors in COM pathogenesis, contributing to future diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Sphenoid Sinus Size and Shape in Chiari Malformation Type 2
(Lippincott Williams and Wilkins, 2025) Erdem, Mehmet Zeki; Yalınkılıç, Abdulaziz; Beǧer, Burhan; Aǧirbaş, Semra; Karaaslanlı, Abdulmutalip; Kiliç, Ridvan; Çetin, Ceyda Şevval
Objective: The aim of the study was to compare the morphologic features of the sphenoid sinus in patients with Chiari malformation type 2 (CMT2) with a control group. Methods: This retrospective study contained computed tomography images of 42 CMT2s and 45 controls. Of 42 CMT2 patients aged 12.55 ± 5.81 years, 23 were females and 19 were males. Of 45 controls aged 12.16 ± 4.89 years, 22 were females and 23 were males. The volume, surface area, width, thickness, and height of the sphenoid sinus were measured, and its shape (postsellar, sellar, presellar, and conchal) was noted. Results: Patients with CMT2 had smaller the sphenoid sinus’s volume (P = 0.035), surface area (P = 0.032), width (P = 0.022), thickness (P = 0.039), and height (P = 0.021) than controls. Four configurations regarding shape types of the sphenoid sinus were detected in CMT2 (postsellar: 31%, sellar: 23.80%, presellar: 26.20%, and conchal: 19%) and controls (postsellar: 35.60%, sellar: 31.10%, presellar: 28.90%, and conchal: 4.40%). CMT2 did not correlate with shape of the sphenoid sinus (P = 0.200). Conclusions: CMT2 patients have a small sinus compared with controls. This work may be useful to understand anatomic properties of the sphenoid bone such patients. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.

Thyroglossal Duct Cyst: Preoperative Imaging, Postoperative Pathology Results, and Revision Surgery Experiences
(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2025) Erdem, Mehmet Zeki; Aǧirbaş, Semra; Yalınkılıç, Abdulaziz; Beǧer, Burhan; Yalinkiliç, Fatma Ayaz; Beger, Orhan
Thyroglossal duct cyst is one of the most common congenital cystic lesions of the neck, resulting from the failure of the thyroglossal duct to close during the embryonic period. Discrepancies may occur between preoperative imaging findings and postoperative histopathological results. While a definitive diagnosis is made through histopathological examination, the Sistrunk procedure is widely used for treatment. Retrospective data of 71 patients who underwent surgery with a preliminary diagnosis of TGDC between 20 10 and 2023 were analyzed. Demographic characteristics, presenting complaints, preoperative imaging findings, pathology reports, and surgical outcomes were evaluated. Data were analyzed using SPSS (v25) software. The mean age of the patients was 25.4 years, with 50.7% being female and 49.3% male. Among 41 patients who underwent preoperative imaging, thyroglossal duct cyst was diagnosed in 30 cases, but pathology results confirmed the diagnosis in only 11 cases. The overall concordance rate was 35.2%. The revision surgery rate was 4.2%, and pathology results in these cases did not support thyroglossal duct cyst. The diagnostic accuracy of preoperative imaging methods is limited. Histopathological examination is critical for improving diagnostic accuracy and evaluating malignancy. A multidisciplinary approach can enhance diagnostic and treatment processes. Histopathological examination is the gold standard in the diagnosis and treatment of thyroglossal duct cyst. A multidisciplinary approach can improve diagnostic accuracy and reduce postoperative complications. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
