Article Atypical Fibroxanthoma of the Skin and the Lower Lip in Xeroderma Pigmentosum(Wiley, 2000) Dilek, FH; Akpolat, N; Metin, A; Ugras, SXeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare, usually autosomal recessive disorder related to DNA repair defects. Atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) is a pleomorphic tumour that occurs infrequently on the limbs and trunk in children, We report a child with XP who presented with AFX of the facial skin and the lower lip, The diagnosis of AFX was confirmed using histological and immunohistochemical techniques. We discuss the possibility that ultraviolet-induced damage might be implicated in the pathogenesis of AFX.Article Comparison of Thickness Measurements in Cutaneous and Subcutaneous Lesions Preoperatively (By Ultrasonography) and Postoperatively (By Ruler)(Springer verlag, 1998) Bekerecioglu, M; Arslan, H; Ugras, S; Karakok, M; Akpolat, NVertical thickness of cutaneous and subcutaneous lesions cannot be assessed accurately by simple examination. To achieve this ultrasonography was performed preoperatively and ruler assessment postoperatively. These measurements were then compared and evaluated using the Wilcoxon test. The results were not statistically significant (p=0.6592, z=0.4410). Cutaneous and subcutaneous ultrasonography is a simple, quick, accurate method of assessing lesion thickness.Article The Effect of the Suture-Induced Delay Phenomenon on Skin Flap Survival and Lipid Peroxidation in Rats(Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 1998) Bekerecioglu, M; Kutluhan, A; Ugras, S; Akpolat, NSkin flap ischemia has been associated with the presence of free radicals. In this study we designed a suture-induced delay model in 30 rats using two different suture techniques. A total of 13 rats that underwent McFarlane's acute random-flap model served as controls. We found a statistically significant difference between the flaps of the experimental and control groups regarding the viability of flaps. Malondialdehyde levels in tissue samples taken from the proximal and distal ends of each flap were estimated at 6 and 24 hours postoperatively. Malondialdehyde levels in the experimental groups were found to be quite lower than those of the controls. In conclusion, the suture-induced delay model seems to be effective in improving flap viability. Also, we found lower malondialdehyde levels in experimental groups compared with controls.Article Hydatid Disease in a Thyroglossal Cyst(Assoc Soc Scientifique Med Belges, 1997) Ugras, S; Demirtas, I; Akdeniz, H; Kutluhan, A; Akpolat, N; Karakok, MThe location of hydatid disease in organs other than the liver and lung is unusual and occasionally producing difficulties in diagnosis. Thyroglossal cyst itself is not so common, so that more careful search of thyroglossal cyst for the presence of scolex and/or laminated membrane may result in increase in frequency of such a condition in the area where hydatid disease is prevailed. Since we were unable to find a case of hydatid disease involving thyroglossal cyst, as in our present case, we feel justified in reporting this case, considering it would be the first publication in world literature.Article Juvenile Hyaline Fibromatosis in One Turkish Child(Turkish J Pediatrics, 2000) Ugras, S; Akpolat, N; Metin, AWe describe a case of juvenile hyaline fibromatosis (JHF) in a Turkish child. Only about 40 cases of juvenile hyaline fibromatosis had been reported in English literature as of March 1998, and it had not been reported in English literature from Turkey as of November 1998. Juvenile hyaline fibromatosis characterized by multiple cutaneous masses is a rare hereditary disorder. This disease is usually found in children, and a malfunction of collagen synthesis is considered as the pathogenetic cause. In the presented case, light microscopy demonstrated an abundance of a homogeneous, amorphous, eosinophilic extracellular matrix in which fibroblasts were embedded. Well-formed collagen fibers could not be demonstrated with Gieson's method or with reticulin preparation. The hayalin material periodic acid-Schiff-positive and diastase-resistant, whereas the Congo red method was negative. Immunohistochemically, the spindle-shaped cells were actin (smooth muscle) negative.Article Malondialdehyde Levels in Serum of Patients With Skin Cancer(Springer, 1998) Bekerecioglu, M; Aslan, R; Ugras, S; Kutluhan, A; Sekeroglu, R; Akpolat, N; Karakok, MThe relationship of free radicals with some types of carcinomas is known, these studies have been performed on samples taken from the tumor tissue. In this study, the malondialdehyde levels in the serum of patients with skin cancer were studied and compared with a control group. The differences between malondialdehyde levels in these two groups were evaluated using Mann Whitney-U. There was a very statistically significant increase in malondialdehyde levels in serum of the skin cancer patients compared with the control group (p=0.0095, z=-2.59). Thus, increased serum malondialdehyde levels may be a sign of carcinoma.Article Multicentric Tumor of the Esophagus and Its Clinical Significance; Case Report and Review of the Literature(Acta Medical Belgica, 2001) Dilek, FH; Yalcinkaya, I; Dilek, ON; Akpolat, NSimultaneous occurrence of the esophageal tumor at multiple sites in a single patient is unusual. Here in, we described a patient had three separate turnoral nodules with ulceration of the esophagus. Thorax CT scan, X-ray and endoscopy revealed the only two tumoral lesion at the lower esophagus. But, the other tumoral lesion at the upper part of the esophagus was detected at operation and histopathologic examination. The aspect of treatment was changed according to this new condition during the operation. We discussed the multicentric tumoral lesions of the esophagus in view of the literature.Article Possible Value of Nasal Smear in Acute Maxillary Sinusitis: an Experimental Study(Scandinavian University Press, 1997) Kutluhan, A; Ugras, S; Berktas, M; Dilek, HF; Akpolat, N; Inalkac, EThe aim of this study is to determine the role of nasal smear in evaluating diagnosis and response to the treatment by the patient of acute maxillary sinusitis. We compared nasal smear and histopathological findings obtained from rabbits experimentally induced acute maxillary sinusitis. The animals were divided into two groups; one with blocked ostium and treated with antibiotic and the other applied natural ostiotomy, during a 4-week period. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in respect of recovery period. This conclusion was derived from nasal smear and biopsy findings. It was observed that nasal smear and biopsy findings were consistent with each other and with clinical findings. The results of this study revealed that nasal smear may be used in the diagnosis and treatment follow-up of acute maxillary sinusitis.Article Primary Composite Tumour With Bipartite Differentiation of the Esophagus(Acta Medical Belgica, 2000) Ugras, S; Akpolat, N; Er, M; Yalçynkaya, I; Karaayvaz, MPrimary small cell carcinoma of the esophagus is a rare tumour. A primary composite tumour of the esophagus is even rarer and only four cases had been reported in the literature up to August 1998. The definitive histogenesis of this tumour remains controversial in spite of the, additional information provided by electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry. In the presented:case, histologically, the tumour tissue was composed of two malignant components: approximately 50 % of a moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, and approximately 50 % of a small cell carcinoma. A lot of morphological transition zones were observed between the squamous cell carcinoma components and the small cell carcinoma components in some areas in the squamous cell carcinoma component. Histochemically and immunohistochemically, the small cell carcinoma cells demonstrated argyrophil granules, and Cytokeratin and Chromogranin A reactivity, but the squamous cell carcinoma cells demonstrated only Cytokeratin reactivity. Negative reactivity for argentaffin granules, neuron-specific enolase and S-100 were observed in both the small cell carcinoma and the, squamous cell carcinoma components. Histological, histochemical:and immunohistochemical findings suggest that a primary composite tumour of the esophagus may be derived from a totipotent primitive cell in the basal region of the squamous mucosa of the esophagus. The patient received chemotherapy preoperatively but died one month after the initial diagnosis.Letter Subdiaphragmatic Location of Costal Chondrosarcoma(Munksgaard int Publ Ltd, 2000) Ünal, Ö; Arslan, H; Karaayvaz, M; Akpolat, N
