Article The High Prevalence of Esophageal and Gastric Cancers in Eastern Turkey(1998) Turkdogan, M.K.; Akman, N.; Tuncer, I.; Dilek, F.H.; Akman, E.; Memik, F.; Aksoy, H.Background/Aims: Gastrointestinal cancers (G.I Ca) are important causes of mortality in Eastern Turkey. We purposed to reveal the epidemiological characteristics and the regional risk factors of the upper G.I (esophageal and gastric) cancers. Materials and Methods: 203 G.I Ca patients were diagnosed in our Gastroenterology Department with endoscopic, radiological and histopathological methods in two and half years. Their age, sex, nutritional habits and the histopathologic types of cancers were determined. Results: Esophageal and gastric cancers were ninety percent (183/203) of all the G.I Ca. Gastric and esophageal cancers were ninety percent (90%) of all these GI cancers. Both of cancer groups have been generally diagnosed after fifty years of age, and gastric Ca was twice frequent in males, whereas esophageal Ca was one and half times frequent in females. Drinking hot tea and family history of cancer were significant in the esophageal Ca group, although cigarette smoking was not significantly different in both cancer groups than the control group. Daily dietary habits were generally consumption of hot, salted, fatty, smoked and fried foods (meat, cereals etc.) without sufficient intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. Histopathologically, ninety percent (90%) of esophageal Ca were epidermoid carcinoma and ten percent (10%) were adencarcinoma whereas all gastric Ca were adenocarcinoma. Conclusions: There are many carcinogen risk factors including mainly dietary and ecological factors such as stagnant ditch water, animal manure and peat in rural areas and volcanic soil properties in the Van region.Article Polyserositis as a Rare Component of Polyglandular Autoimmune Syndrome Type Ii(Medicom Group, 2001) Algün, E.; Erkoç, R.; Ckotan,; Güier, N.; Sahn, L.; Ayakta, H.; Aksoy, H.Polyglandular autoimmune (PGA) syndromes (types I and II) may affect various endocrine and non-endocrine organs in the body. In the commoner PGA type II, primary adrenal insufficiency, autoimmune thyroid disease and type I diabetes mellitus are the most frequent manifestations. Serositis with pericardial or pleural involvement is not a well known component of the disease. Here, we report a 21-year-old man who first presented with a pleuropericardial effusion and Graves' disease, and who then developed type I diabetes mellitus.Article Relationship Between Leptin Levels and Body Indexes in Patients With Haematologic Malignancy(2001) Mete, R.; Dilek, I.; Algün, E.; Erkoç, R.; Ayakta, H.; Topal, C.; Aksoy, H.Leptin is a recently found hormone regulating body weight. In human obesity, this weight-regulating hormone level is in a positive correlation with FMI (fat mass index) and BMI (body mass index). In this study, we aimed to investigate the relation between serum leptin levels and BMI, PF (percentage fat), LMI (lean mass index), FMI and some other parameters of patients with haematologic malignant diseases. Fourty-four patients with haematologic malignant diseases and 25 healthy control group were taken into the study. In the comparison, there were no significant between the PF and FMI values of both groups, while the mean BMI and LMI values of the control group were significantly higher than that of the patient group. There was a positive correlation between leptin levels and BMI and FMI among parameters studied in our control group, whereas we couldn't demonstrate any such correlation in patient group. We estimate that the alteration may be due to disturbances in the feed back mechanism developing in patient with haematologic malignancy.
