Article Biological Activities and Chemical Composition of Xanthoria Lichens From Turkey(Pamukkale University, 2021) Mukemre, M.; Zengin, G.; Turker, R.S.; Aslan, A.; Dalar, A.This study presents the biopharmaceutical potential and bioactive composition of Xanthoria lichens (X. candelaria, X. elegans, X. parietina) that wildly grown and traditionally utilized as medicine in North Eastern Anatolia, Turkey, which has specific microclimatic and ecological zones. Chromatographic findings revealed significant levels of parietin compound (35 to 49 mg/g extract), low levels of various fatty acids and a volatile compound; α-terpinene in the extracts. The extracts exhibited pronounced antioxidant potential through reducing and scavenging mechanisms; FCR: 33-38 mg gallic acid equivalent, FRAP: 511-815 μ mol Fe2+, ORAC: 1032-1355 μ mol Trolox equivalent per gram extract, respectively and DPPH: IC50: 1.1-2.7, ABTS: IC50: 2-2.3, CUPRAC: IC50: 0.7-1.2, phosphomolybdenum: IC50: 2-2.9, metal chelation: IC50: 1.3-2.3 mg extract/ml, respectively. Concerning enzyme inhibitory activities, the extracts effectively suppressed the activity of acetylcholinesterase (IC50: 0.5-0.75 mg/ml), butyrylcholinesterase (IC50: 0.7-1.1 mg/ml), tyrosinase (IC50: 0.6-0.7 mg/ml), amylase (IC50: 1.7-2 mg/ml), glucosidase (IC50: 0.6-3 mg/ml) and lipase (IC50: 55-79 μg/ml) enzymes. These findings showed that Xanthoria lichens are dominated by parietin as the major key compound and high-tolerated lichen taxa towards to different ecological and climatic conditions. These lichens might be promising sources of novel antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory activities such as Xanthoria candelaria as antioxidant and antilipase, Xanthoria elegans as anticholinesterase, and Xanthoria parietina as antiamylase and antiglucosidase. © 2021 Acta Biomedica Scientifica. All rights reserved.Article Cytogenetic and Oxidative Status of Cultured Lymphocytes After Exposure To Extracts From Rhizopogon Mushrooms (Agaricomycetes) in Vitro(Begell House Inc., 2021) Emsen, B.; Turel, A.; Kaya, A.; Aslan, A.; Engin, T.In this study, acetone and water extracts obtained from edible mushrooms, Rhizopogon luteolus Fr. and Rh. roseolus (Corda) Th. Fr., containing important bioactive components were used. Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total oxidative stress (TOS) levels were examined on human peripheral lymphocyte culture treated with the respective extracts. Levels of genetic damage and cytotoxic effects of the respective extracts on lymphocytes were also tested. In general, when TAC levels of the extracts on cells were examined, a concentration-dependent increase was observed; a negative correlation was found between TOS data and concentration. Genotoxicity tests (chromosome aberration and micronucleus analysis) revealed that the concentrations of the extract applications did not significantly (P > 0.05) change genotoxicity on human peripheral lymphocyte culture compared to the negative control. Considering all of the results obtained, it was determined that applications of Rh. luteolus and Rh. roseolus extracts, especially at concentrations of 50 and 100 mg/L, increased the TAC value of lymphocytes, which play an important role in the human immune system, without causing genetic or oxidative stress. © 2021 by Begell House, Inc. www.begellhouse.com.Article Distribution of Epiphytic Lichens and Sulphur Dioxide (So2) Pollution in the City of Bursa(TUBITAK, 1997) Öztürk, Ş.; Güvenç, Ş.; Aslan, A.The distributions of 24 epiphytic lichen species are given from 29 selected research stations in the city of Bursa. Buellia vouauxii, a lichenicolous fungus, and is new to Turkey and also new for Asia. Aspicilia glomerulans, Llimoniella muralicola, Myriolecis invadens, Ochrolechia subviridis, Placynthium hungaricum and Placynthium posterulum were reported for the second time from Turkey. A total of 282 lichen taxa and 20 lichenicolous fungi, of which 4 are varieties, are determined from 87 different localities in Muş province (Turkey). K.; Aras, E. S.; Aslan, A.; Cansaran-Duman, D.This work aims to determine the response of Hypogymnia physodes (L.) Nyl. (hooded tube lichen) collected in an unpolluted site (Yenice Forest in Karabiik, Turkey) to stress conditions. In the present study, the effect of exposure to different heavy metals (Cd+2, Pb+2, and Cr+6) for different durations and UV radiations dosages on lichen was examined at the physiological and molecular levels. The effects of stress conditions were determined in the case of different parameters concerning heavy metal, protein, chlorophyll, and carotenoid contents and changes in the DNA profiles. According to the results obtained that exposure to heavy metals and UV radiations leads to a physiological response in a concentration and dose-dependent manner through differences in chlorophyll, protein content in heavy metals and UV treated lichen specimen. Furthermore, changes in RAPD assay and DNA methylation analysis showed that homologous nucleotide sequences in the genome from untreated and stress conditions treated lichen specimen showed different band patterns and methylation under heavy metals and UV stress. The results determined that lichen specimen suggest as a possible bioindicator able to measure the biological effects of heavy metal pollution and damage to UV radiation.Article Three New Lichenicolous Fungi Records for Turkey and Asia(Akademiai Kiado Rt., 2019) Yazıcı, K.; Aslan, A.Three lichenicolous fungi, Abrothallus peyritschii, Lichenochora verrucicola and Sclerococcum montagnei, collected from Burdur and Bitlis provinces, are reported as new to Turkey, the latter species is also new to Asia.
