Article Acetaminophen Intoxication Is Associated With Decreased Serum Paraoxonase and Arylesterase Activities and Increased Lipid Hydroperoxide Levels(Sage Publications Ltd, 2014) Karadas, S.; Aslan, M.; Gonullu, H.; Kati, C.; Duran, L.; Olmez, S.; Demir, H.Background: Acetaminophen is at present one of the most commonly used analgesics and antipyretics. Recent evidence has suggested that oxidative stress is involved in the mechanism of acetaminophen intoxication. Paraoxonase-1 (PON1) plays an important role as an endogenous free-radical scavenging molecule. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of serum PON1 activity and oxidative stress in patients with acetaminophen intoxication. Methods: A total of 20 patients with acetaminophen intoxication and 25 healthy controls were enrolled. Serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC), lipid hydroperoxide (LOOH) levels, and paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were measured spectrophotometrically. Results: The serum TAC levels and the paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were significantly lower in patients with acetaminophen intoxication compared with controls (all, p < 0.001), while the serum LOOH levels were significantly higher (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Our results suggest that decreased PON1 activity seems to be associated with increased oxidative stress in patients with acetaminophen intoxication. Measuring serum PON1 activity may be useful in assessing the development of toxicity risk in acetaminophen toxicity. It would be useful to recommend vitamins with antioxidant effects such as vitamins C and E along with medical treatments.Article Antioxidant Effect of Omega-3 Fatty Acids on Exercise-Induced Oxidative Stress in Rats(Verduci Editore s.r.l, 2023) Sarikaya, M.; Aslan, M.; Çinar, V.; Çibuk, S.; Selçuk, M.; Embiyaoğlu, N.M.; Öğe, B.OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to examine the effects of omega-3 supplementation on Catalase (CAT) activity, Malondialdehyde (MDA), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels in long-term aerobic exercises in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 28 male Wistar albino rats (8 weeks old, 220-350 g body weight) were included in the study. The rats were given treadmill exercise for 20 minutes at an average speed of 15 cm/s, 5 days a week, for 8 weeks. The experiment was terminated at the end of the eighth week. Blood samples were taken. CAT, MDA, AOPP and GSH analyses were performed. SPSS v. 21 package program was used in the analysis of the data. The distribution of the data was examined with the normality homogeneity test, and it was determined that it was a normal distribution. As a result, the One-Way ANOVA test, one of the parametric tests, was used. Tukey test was used to determine the difference between groups. Significance levels were evaluated as (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Statistical analysis showed a statistically significant difference between groups in CAT, MDA and GSH levels (p < 0.05), while there were no differences between the groups in AOPP levels (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: In the conclusion of the study, it was determined that omega-3 supplementation caused a decrease in MDA level, an increase in CAT activity and GSH level in rats exposed to chronic long-term exercise. Thus, it can be said that omega-3 supplementation in chronic long-term exercise will provide antioxidant protection against potential oxidative damage. © 2023 Verduci Editore s.r.l. We figured out the benefits of scintigraphic findings to the diagnosis. This study was performed in our department between 2006-2011 and patients were evaluated retrospectively. Pre-diagnosis of brain death and final diagnosis were compared. 24 patients were referred to our nuclear medicine department between 2006-2011. All patients underwent brain scintigraphy following IV injection of 20 mCi of Tc 99m DTPA or 10 mCi Tc 99m HMPAO with one-second dynamic images in 128x128 matrix for a period of 60 seconds. Anterior, posterior, right and left lateral static images were obtained with 5-minute in 256x256 matrix after dynamic images. Patients were referred by the departments of internal medicine intensive care and anaesthesiology intensive care. No blood flow into the middle, anterior and posterior cerebral arteries and no activity in the venous sinuses were accepted as showing the brain death. 22 of 24 patients were reported that findings in brain scan were consistent with brain death as in the prediagnosis. Brain death was not reported in two patients with Tc-99m HMPAO scan and brain death was suspicious in one patient with Tc-99m DTPA scan. Two patients with Tc-99m HMPAO scan were died two weeks after the brain scan and the patient with Tc-99m DTPA was died one day after the brain scan. Brain scintigraphy is a non-invasive procedure supporting the clinical diagnosis and it can be also easily performed and can exclude the negative and suspicious patients. © 2014, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, Universitas Indonesia. E.; Selek, S.; Aslan, M.Background: Recent evidence suggests that oxidative stress may be an important phenomenon in the pathophysiology of rosacea. Paraoxonase-1 (PON1) is an antioxidant enzyme with three activities: paraoxonase, arylesterase and dyazoxonase. In this study, we evaluated serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities, and serum lipid hydroperoxide (LOOH) levels in patients with rosacea in comparison to healthy controls. Material and methodThe study included 39 rosacea patients and healthy controls, consisting of 40 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers. Serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were measured using paraoxon and phenylacetate substrates. Serum LOOH levels were measured with the ferrous ion oxidation-xylenol orange assay. ResultsIn rosacea group mean serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were 74.5438.30UL(-1) and 141.29 +/- 22.27kUL(-1) respectively, which were significantly lower than controls (P=0.010, 0.005; respectively). Mean serum LOOH level of rosacea group was 8.17 +/- 1.91molL(-1) which was significantly higher than controls (P=0.009). There were no statistically significant differences between the clinical subtypes of the disease, menopause situation or ocular involvement with the respect to the serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities and LOOH levels (all; P>0.05). ConclusionsSerum PON1 enzyme activities have decreased significantly in rosacea. These findings support that decreased PON1 activity and increased oxidative stress may play a role in the pathogenesis of rosacea. Further studies are needed to elucidate the role of PON1 activity in the pathophysiology of rosacea.Article Double Layer Crescent Graft Technique for Endoscopic Tympanoplasty(Royal Belgian Soc Ear, Nose, Throat, Head & Neck Surgery, 2019) Aslan, M.; Duzenli, U.Objectives: The main aim of this study was to present the surgical and functional outcomes of tympanoplasty performed using the crescent graft technique. G.Background: Mean platelet volume (MPV) is associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in type 2 diabetic patients. However, the effects of blood glucose regulation and treatment regime on MPV has not been adequately studied in type 2 diabetic patients. Aims: We studied the effects of blood glucose regulation and treatment regimen on mean platelet volume in Type 2 diabetic patients. Subjects and Methods: A total of 232 diabetic patients who were admitted to the hospital in short intervals of 3 months in the last 2 years were included in the study. When the second admission HbA(1c) was greater than the first admission HbA(1c), they were classified as being in the deteriorated blood glucose regulation group, otherwise they were classified in the improved blood glucose regulation group. Also, the deteriorated and improved blood glucose regulation groups were classified based on therapy modalities as the sulfonylurea + metformin group and the insulin + metformin group. Paired t-test was used for comparison of the groups. Results: Of the 232 patients, 98 (42.2%) were male and 134 (57.8%) were female. There were 126 (55.2%) patients using sulfonylurea + metformin, while 106 (44.8%) patients were using insulin + metformin. MPV levels were significantly increased in patients with deteriorating glucose regulation (p = 0.003). This increase in MPV was only seen in the oral hypoglycemic treatment group (p = 0.003). Conclusions: Our results suggested a close relationship between poor glycemic control and increased platelet activity in type 2 diabetic patients with oral antidiabetic therapy when compared to the insulin and metformin therapy modality.Article Evaluation of Blood Neutrophil To Lymphocyte and Platelet To Lymphocyte Ratios According To Plasma Glucose Status and Serum Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 Levels in Patients With Acromegaly(Sage Publications Ltd, 2016) Ucler, R.; Aslan, M.; Atmaca, M.; Alay, M.; Ademoglu, E. N.; Gulsen, I.Introduction: Cardiovascular, respiratory, and cerebrovascular diseases and malignancies are responsible for morbidity and mortality in acromegaly. Also these diseases are associated with chronic inflammation. The neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are currently gaining interest as new markers of inflammation. Moreover, increased morbidity and mortality are positively correlated with the presence of diabetes and levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) in acromegaly. The objective of the present study was to investigate the relationship between these markers and acromegaly according to plasma glucose status and serum IGF-1 levels. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data from 61 acromegaly patients who were in a newly diagnosed period (35 male, 26 female; mean age 38.13 +/- 13.98). Patients with normal plasma glucose (n = 27), impaired fasting glucose (n = 18), and diabetes mellitus (n = 16) were categorized into three different groups. NLR and PLR were compared between the study groups and were evaluated according to IGF-1 levels. Results: There were no statistically significant differences inNLR and PLR measurements among the study groups (p > 0.05). However, there were significant positive correlations between NLR and IGF-1 levels and between PLR and IGF-1 levels when all patients were evaluated (r = 0.334, p = 0.011 and r = 0.277, p = 0.035, respectively). Conclusions: This is the first report studying the relationship of NLR and PLR with glucose status and IGF-1 levels in acromegaly patients. Our study results suggest that subclinical inflammation may play a role in increased incidence of mortality and morbidity, which depends on uncontrolled IGF-1 levels in patients with acromegaly.Article The Evaluation of Dream Anxiety and Sleep Quality in Hemodialysis Patients(Kure Iletisim Grubu A.S., 2017) Selvi, Y.; Ozdemir, P.G.; Soyoral, Y.; Tasdemir, M.; Aslan, M.Sleep problems are prevalent in hemodialysis patients. Although several studies have investigated the sleep quality and its causes in hemodialysis patients, there is no report available on dream anxiety in hemodialysis patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the sleep quality and dream anxiety in hemodialysis patients. We also investigated related factors which influence sleep quality and dream anxiety. Fifty-Two hemodialysis patients and 38 healthy individuals were included in the present study. The sleep quality and dream anxiety were assessed with Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Van Dream Anxiety Scale (VDAS); respectively. The majority of hemodialysis patients had poor sleep quality (%92.3) in our study. Hemodialysis patients had significantly longer sleep latency, higher sleep disturbances and daytime dysfunction than healthy individuals. Hemodialysis patients had higher global dream anxiety scores than healthy individuals. There was a negative relationship between hemoglobin levels and Global VDAS score. Global PSQI score was negative correlated with serum creatinine and phosphorus levels, while positive correlated with C-reactive protein levels. Our results suggest that hemodialysis patients had poor sleep quality, higher sleep disturbances and daytime dysfunction compared with healthy subjects. Moreover, we demonstrated that dream anxiety was significantly higher in hemodialysis patients.Article Evaluation of the Patients With Lymph Node Tuberculosis(2013) Garca, M.F.; Aslan, M.; Demir, G.; Bilgen, S.; Uysal, M.Lymph node tuberculosis (LNT) is chronic granulomatous inflammation of the lymph nodes. The aim of the present study is to review the epidemiologic, clinical and laboratory features of patients with LNT retrospectively. The records of 138 patients admitted to tuberculos dispensary between 2005 and 2010 with the diagnosis of tuberculosis were reviewed retrospectively and LNT cases were investigated. Twenty one cases were identified with LNT. 13 patients were female (61.9%), 8 (38.1%) were male and mean age was 41 ± 21 years. The female to male ratio of LNT cases was 1.625 (13/8). The most common complaint was palpable mass on neck. Just cervical lymph nodes were the most frequently involved; in 15 (71.5%) patients. Only 2 cases have contact history with tuberculosis cases (9.5%) and two cases had a history of pulmonary tuberculosis (9.5%). After confirmation of diagnosis all patients were treated with combined anti-tuberculous therapy for at least six months. LNT is seen more frequently in females than males. It should be considered in the differential diagnosis of the neck masses.Article Incidentally Detection of the Swyer-James Syndrome With Opposite Side Pneumonia(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2020) Demir, G.; Aslan, M.Swyer-James Syndrome (SJS) is a rare disease that is also known as unilateral hyperlucent of the lung. This disease may lead to atelectasis and pulmonary hypoplasia. The viral and bacterial respiratory system infections in the childhood are considered as predisposing factors of the chronical bronchial inflammation that leads to SJS. It is characterized by obliteration of the bronchias, air-trapping and lung hypoperfusion. In this report, we describe the case of a 50-year-old male with pneumonia and incidentally detected SJS in the other side of the thorax. © 2020, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. However, the results of these studies are conflicting. The aim of this study was to simultaneously investigate if MPV, RDW, PLR and NLR have a diagnostic role in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis and also the relationship between these systemic inflammation marker and leukocyte count. Thirty patients with acute appendicitis and 30 age-matched healthy subjects. RDW, MPV, neutrophils, lymphocytes and platelet counts were evaluated with complete blood count. The NLR and PLR were calculated as the ratios of the neutrophils and platelets to the lymphocytes. NLR and leukocyte count were significantly higher in the acute appendicitis patients compared to controls (both p<0.001), while RDW levels were significantly lower (p=0.041). There were no statistically significant differences regarding platelet numbers, MPV levels and PLR between acute appendicitis and healthy subjects (All; p>0.05). There was a significant correlation between leukocyte count and NLR (p<0.01, r=0.365). However, leukocyte count was not correlated with RDW and MPV levels (all; p>0.05). The current study is the first to investigate MPV, RDW, PLR and NLR in acute appendicitis patients. We found significantly increased NLR and leukocyte count in acute appendicitis patients compared to healthy subjects. Combined use of NLR and RDW values along with leukocyte count and other clinical assessment could help the diagnostic process of acute appendicitis. © 2017, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. This issue can be clearly seen in the imitation poems that are based on the harmony of a ghazal with rhyme and redif written before. Therefore, imitation poems make it possible to reach very valuable data in the context of a poet’s influence on divan poetry. Nesîmî, one of the divan poets of the XIV-XVth centuries, was a caliph of Fazlullah Esterâbâdî, the founder of the Hurufism, and traveled to Anatolia and Syria to spread his belief. The poet, besides making the propaganda of Hurufism in his poems, also wrote poems independent of his belief and succeeded in influencing both the poets of his time and after. The dimensions and quality of Nesîmî’s influence on divan literature stands in front of us as a matter worth researching. What sort of mass of poets did the poet influence quantitatively? Also; does this effect reflect the belief of the poet, who was a deep Hurufi and died for this cause, or were Nesîmî’s non-Hurufi poems were preferred to be arranged? If Nesîmî’s poems relating Hurufism were also arranged, are there any traces of the Hurufism belief in these poems? We will try to find answers to these questions in our article. © 2021, Turk Dil Kurumu. In this study, we aimed to investigate serum paraoxonase (PON1), arylesterase and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activities, and lipid hydroperoxide (LOOH) levels as oxidative stress markers along with their relationship with the pregnancy rate in women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment. Material and Methods: Serum samples of 179 subjects were collected immediately before starting ovarian stimulation and on ovum pick-up (OPU) day during IVF treatment. Stimulation protocol and starting doses were determined individually. When the leading follicle reached at least 17 mm in size, recombinant human chorionic gonadotropin (Ovitrelle, 250 mcg, Serono) was administered for ovulation induction. Serum basal/salt-stimulated paraoxonase, arylesterase activities, myeloperoxidase activity, and lipid hydroperoxide levels were compared between two samples. Subjects were also divided into two groups according to the presence of pregnancy, and the groups were compared in terms of oxidative stress markers studied. Results: Serum MPO activity and LOOH levels were significantly higher on ovum pick up day (p<0.05, p<0.001, respectively), while basal/salt-stimulated paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were significantly lower (p=0.012, p=0.041, respectively) than those before ovarian stimulation. Serum LOOH levels on OPU day were significantly higher in non-pregnant group than pregnant one (p<0.001). Although basal/salt-stimulated paraoxonase, arylesterase and myeloperoxidase activities were higher in the non-pregnant group compared to the pregnant group, it was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Conclusion: Ovarian stimulation during IVF treatment resulted in increased oxidative stress and decreased PON1 activity. However, changes in the studied parameters were not found to be significantly associated with the pregnancy results. Further studies are required to clarify our results. © 2014 by Türkiye Klinikleri.Article Prevalence of Helicobacter Pylori in Patients With Brucellosis(BMJ Publishing Group, 2012) Esen, R.; Dulger, A.C.; Begenik, H.; Demirtas, L.; Ebinc, S.; Aytemiz, E.; Aslan, M.Background: Helicobacter pylori infection affects approximately 40 million individuals in Turkey. Our prefecture is an endemic area for H. pylori infection and brucellosis. However, there are no data on the H. pylori prevalence among patients with brucellosis. Objectives: The primary aim of the current study was to investigate the link between H. pylori infection and brucellosis. The secondary aim was to determine the seroprevalence of H. pylori infection in healthy individuals. Methods: Between May 2010 and May 2011, serum was collected from patients with Brucella infection (n = 111) and healthy individuals (n = 120) and analyzed using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. Brucella infection was defined as a positive Wright test or blood culture positivity for Brucella in conjunction with disease symptoms and findings. Results: Among the 111 patients with brucellosis, 69% (n = 77) had a seropositivity result for H. pylori IgG. The healthy control subjects had an 87% (n = 104) seropositivity for H. pylori IgG. The serum H. pylori IgG antibody seropositivity was significantly lower in the patients with Brucella infection compared with the control subjects (P G 0.001). Conclusion: Our results show that the serum prevalence of H. pylori among the patients infected with brucellosis is significantly lower than that in the control population. A negative correlation between H. pylori infection and brucellosis infection might be hypothesized. Nevertheless, there was no data regarding the connection between blood group of ABO and tumor diameters in carotid body tumors (CBTs) patients. The purpose of our study was to analyse possible association between tumor diameters and gender, ABO blood group in CBTs patients compared to healthy controls. The demographic and laboratory data of 65 CBTs patients (57 females and 8 males) who underwent surgical intervention and 65 healthy controls (52 females and 13 males) were retrospectively analyzed. The mean age of CBTs patients was 51.81±9.82 years, and the mean age of the healthy subjects was 52.72±8.50 years. There were no statistically significant difference between two groups with regard to age and gender. The mean of tumor diameters was 3.72±1.50 cm (range=1-8 cm). There was no statistically significant difference between study groups according to AB0 blood group (p=0.87). The females/males ratio of patients was 57/8. The mean tumor diameters of females was 3.57±1.34 cm and the mean tumor diameters of males was 4.77±2.16 cm; the difference was statistically significant (p=0.03). There was a positive correlation between male gender and the tumor diameters (r=0.23, p=0.03). This is the first report investigating association between the tumor diameters and AB0 blood group in CBTs. Although CBTs were shown higher in females, tumor diameters were found significantly higher in males tha n females. However, we did not determine any association between AB0 blood group and tumor diameters. © 2018, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. Entitled 'assessment of Decreased Serum Paraoxonase Activity in Patients With Rosacea in Terms of Methodology(Wiley-blackwell, 2016) Takci, Z.; Bilgili, S. G.; Karadag, A. S.; Kucukoglu, M. E.; Selek, S.; Aslan, M.Article A Retrospective Analysis of Haemotologic Parameters in Patients With Bilateral Tinnitus(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2018) Düzenli, U.; Bozan, N.; Aslan, M.; Özkan, H.; Turan, M.; Kıroğlu, A.F.Tinnitus is a perception disorder of sound. In addition to otologic diseases; mood disorders, inflammatory diseases, thromboembolic pathologies may lead to tinnitus. Mean platelet volume (MPV), Platelet Distribution Width (PDW) and Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) were investigated as biomarkers in tinnitus patients. In this study, we aimed to find whether there is any association between these biomarkers and bilateral tinnitus patients. Fifty eight with tinnitus and 58 healthy subjects were included to the study. The distribution of age and sex in each group were equal. Hearing thresholds of tinnitus patients were obtained with pure-tone audiometry. Hematologic values were evaluated in each group and correlation between these values and audiometric data were investigated in tinnitus patients. PDW values of the tinnitus group were found statistically significantly higher than those in control group (p=0.041). NLR was found lower in tinnitus patients and it was statistically significant (p=0.001). MPV values were found similar in each group. In tinnitus group there were no correlation between hematologic values and audiometric data. In this study, we found blood marker value alterations in bilateral tinnitus patients, but there was no correlation with audiologic data. And so we need larger studies to obtain more significant results. © 2018, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi.
