Assessment of Pollution Indices and Human Health Risk Related To 13 Heavy Metal Contents in Surface Water of Sihke Pond (Van), Turkey
(Taylor & Francis inc, 2022) Habesoglu, Serif; Atici, Ataman Altug
Heavy metals may cause serious problems for human health in contaminated water resources. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the metal contamination levels in Sihke Pond surface water and assess the possible human health risk for children and adults through ingestion of the surface water. The concentrations of thirteen heavy metals (aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, lead, selenium, and zinc) were determined monthly using the inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer between September 2019 and August 2020. Heavy metal pollution index and metal index were used to determine the metal pollution level. Non-carcinogenic risks including hazard quotient and hazard index were calculated and the carcinogenic risk values were estimated for both age groups. The mean value of heavy metals was decreased in the order of manganese > molybdenum > iron > chromium > zinc > arsenic > cobalt > copper > nickel > lead > aluminum > cadmium > selenium. The mean heavy metal pollution index value was determined as 110.8 and classified as totally not suitable. The mean metal index value was also included in the slightly affected class. The hazard quotient for arsenic, cobalt, and molybdenum, and hazard index values had values >1 for both groups. The carcinogenic risk caused by arsenic, chromium, and lead were all above the tolerable limit of 1.0 x 10(-4). Thus, the non-carcinogenic risk and carcinogenic risk results for children and adults exceed the threshold values. Consequently, the Sihke Pond surface water is contaminated with heavy metals and is not suitable for direct consumption.

Biological Characteristics of Siraz Fish, Capoeta Kosswigi (Teleostei: Cyprinidae) and Host Relationship With Ectoparasitic Glochidia Larvae of Freshwater Mussel, Unio Stevenianus (Bivalvia: Unionidae) in the Karasu River (Van, Türkiye)
(Central Fisheries Research inst, 2023) Atici, Ataman Altug; Kankaya, Ertugrul
Capoeta kosswigi (Karaman, 1969) and Unio stevenianus (Krynicki, 1837) are endemic species in the Karasu river, the Lake Van basin. This study was carried out to determine the biological characteristics of C. kosswigi and distribution and prevalence of U. stevenianus glochidia on this host fish. A total of 379 C. kosswigi were caught by electrofishing between March 2022 and February 2023. The maximum fork length and total weights of C. kosswigi were 29.2 cm and 421.8 g for females and 27.8 cm and 337.9 g for males. The length-weight relationships were calculated as W=0.017L2.881 (r2=0.986) for males (negative allometric growth) and W=0.016L3.001 (r2=0.953) for females (isometric growth). The Fulton condition factor was determined as 1.53 +/- 0.13 (1.23-1.99). The female:male ratio was calculated as 0.18:1.00. Additionally, a total of 12525 Unionid glochidia were detected on C. kosswigi samples in this study. Glochidia was more inclined to prefer male C. kosswigi as a host. The highest amount of glochidia was recorded in May, while the lowest in August. The amount of glochidia was statistically found the highest in the gill filaments (454.3 +/- 678.0) compared to all fins. Therefore, the native species, C. kosswigi is a suitable host for the freshwater mussel, U. stevenianus.

The Correlation Between the Differences in Nucb2/Nesfatin(nes) Peptide Levels and Body Weight, Lenght and Gender in Alburnus Tarichi
(Central Fisheries Research inst, 2018) Caf, Fatma; Koprucu, Sibel; Algul, Sermin; Koyun, Mustafa; Atici, Ataman Altug
Nucleobindin-2 (NUCB2) is a 396-amino-acid peptide related to food intake and body weight. It suppresses appetite by acting on the hypothalamus, andits derived peptide, nesfatin-1, was shown to reduce food intake and body weight in rodents. In this study, we examined NUCB2 peptide levels in correlation with body weight, length and gender in adult Alburnus tarichi fish. Serum NUCB2 levels were measured with ELISA, and were observed to significantly vary depending on gender: 0.43 +/- 0.17 ng/mL in the males (n=6) and 0.28 +/- 0.11 ng/ml in the females (n= 6) (p<0.05). However, NUCB2 levels were not significantly correlated to body weight (r=-0.08, p=0.7) or length (r=-0.16, p= 0.6). NUCB2/nesfatin, an appetiteregulation hormone, was therefore shown to be impacted by gender but not by body weight or length in A. tarichi.

Effects of Total Suspended Solids at Different Levels on the Eggs and Larvae of Endemic Fish, Tarek (Alburnus Tarichi Guldenstadt, 1814) in the Karasu River (Van, Turkey)
(Istanbul Univ Press, Fac Aquatic Sciences, 2023) Atici, Ataman Altug; Elp, Mahmut; Sen, Fazil
The Karasu River (Van, Turkey) is one of the most important sources of intensive reproduction for Tarek (Alburnus tarichi Guldenstadt, 1814) in the Van Lake basin. However, sand pits and sand extraction activities in the Karasu River threaten the spawning areas of A. tarichi. This study aimed to investigate how increased sediment concentration in the Karasu River affects the eggs and larvae of A. tarichi during the reproductive period. The study in the laboratory was designed by measuring total suspended solids and turbidity associated with the river over two years for five different experimental groups (corresponding to 0, 10, 50, 100, and 600 mg L-1, and associated groups: control group, Group 1, Group 2, Group 3, and Group 4, respectively). The percentage of hatched out larvae was statistically different between the groups (p<0.05). The highest percentages of hatched out larvae were found in the control group (73.98 & PLUSMN;5.89%) and Group 1 (68.05 & PLUSMN;2.96%). The highest survival rates in larvae were determined in the control group (53.35 & PLUSMN;5.62%) and Group 1 (44.98 & PLUSMN;4.41%). These results demonstrate that A. tarichi is sensitive to suspended solid concentrations that are very common in the natural environment. In conclusion, sand pits and sand extraction activities must be stopped completely during the reproductive period of A. tarichi between May and July and strict controls should be put in place during this time. These measures will provide an important contribution to ensuring the continuity of this species.

(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2022) Atici, Ataman Altug; Sepil, Ahmet; Sen, Fazil; Karagoz, Mustafa Hamdi
Increasing pollution of plastics smaller than 5 mm (microplastics [MPs]) in seas and oceans as well as in inland waters around the world has recently been a significant threat to water resources. In this study, MP pollution levels were investigated using a 335 mu m mesh manta trawl in November 2019 in Van Bay. Water samples were collected from 15 stations. MP particles ranged from 641424 to 1426638 per km(2) in surface waters (ranged from 2.35 to 5.09 MPs/m(3) in water columns). The most frequently observed MP type, size, shape and colour classes were fiber (40.5%), <0.1 mm (52.3%), irregular (40.8%) and blue (57.1%), respectively. The highest MP abundance was observed at 14 and 15 stations where lake current were effective. Station 6 were also under serious plastic pollution pressure beacuse it was located close to Akkopru and Kurubas Rivers that pass through the densely populated city center. The chemical structure of all examined MPs showed presence of polyethylene (60.2%), followed by polypropylene (20.4%), polyethylene terephthalate (17.2%) and poly(methyl acrylate) (2.2%). The MPs were also examined using scanning electron microscopy to understand the surface characteristics. In conclusion, our study revealed that the surface waters of Van Bay are highly contaminated with MPs.

(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2022) Atici, Ataman Altug
Purpose Microplastic pollution is a major problem that threatens freshwater mussels as well as marine bivalves, since these filter-feeding organisms are directly exposed to microplastics in the water column. There is no study on the microplastic contamination of Unio stevenianus as a bioindicator organism. The aim of this study is to determine the microplastic contamination in U. stevenianus. Materials and methods In total, 32 U. stevenianus were obtained from three different sites from Karasu River, in October 2020. The soft tissue of each mussel was digested and filtered. The filters with microplastics were observed under a stereomicroscope. Results A total of 1,253 microplastics, ranging from 0.81 to 6.69 items/gram (mean 2.85 +/- 1.27 items/g) and 13.00 to 84.73 items/individual (mean 39.15 +/- 16.95 items/individual), were extracted from soft tissues of mussel for all stations. The dominant of the detected microplastics consisted of fragment (48.8%) followed by fiber (47.5%) types, and <0.1 mm size (44.8%), irregular shape (48.7%) and black coloured (48.8%) items were the most uptaked microplastics. Conclusion This study indicated that U. stevenianus has a lot of pollution where there are a lot of microplastics in the river.

(Ege Univ, Fac Fisheries, 2021) Atici, Ataman Altug; Sepil, Ahmet; Sen, Fazil; Cavus, Asude
In this study, the growth and reproductive characteristics of Capoeta kosswigi Karaman, 1969 and Barbus ercisianus Karaman, 1971, which are endemic to the Lake Van Basin, in Delicay (Van) were investigated. A total of 309 C. kosswigi and 288 B. ercisianus specimens were caught by electrofishing between April and August 2018. The fork length of C. kosswigi and B. ercisianus ranged from 3.7-26.1 cm and from 4.3-22.7 cm, and the total weights ranged from 0.6-227.4 g and from 1.2-140.0 g, respectively. The most intensive catching was in C. kosswigi population of 5.0-6.9 (27.5%) cm and 0-19.9 (67.0%) g in the groups, and 12.0-13.9 (24.7%) cm and 0-9.9 (23.3%) g groups in B. ercisianus. Condition factor was determined as 1.305 +/- 0.008 (0.798-1.886) in C. kosswigi and 1.158 +/- 0.006 (0.864-1.559) in B. ercisianus. The length-weight relationships were calculated as W = 0.01435 x L-2.952 (r(2) = 0.996) for C. kosswigi and W = 0.01276 x L-2.959 (r(2) = 0.994) for B. ercisianus. The M:F ratio was calculated as 1:0.15 in C. kosswigi and 1:0.64 in B. ercisianus. It was established that C. kosswigi attained sexual maturity when they reached to 11 cm fork length for males, 18 cm fork length for females. Maturation of B.ercisianus individuals occurred at 9 cm fork length in males and 12 cm fork length in females. The spawning in C. kosswigi was observed from 1st week of May to 2nd week of July, and in B. ercisianus from 1st week of May to 1st week of August. It may be suggested that minimum catching size must be 20 cm fork length for C. kosswigi and 15 cm fork length for B. ercisianus.

High Levels of Microplastic Ingestion by Commercial, Planktivorous Alburnus Tarichi in Lake Van, Turkey
(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2021) Atici, Ataman Altug; Sepil, Ahmet; Sen, Fazil
Microplastic pollution of inland environments has been receiving increased publicity over the last few years. For the first time, this study reports on the presence of microplastics (0.1 mm to <5 mm) in the gastrointestinal tracts of Alburnus tarichi in Lake Van from January to April 2020. In total, 101 fishes were obtained from Citoren, Edremit, Gevas and Dagonu fisheries regions. A total of 3338 pieces of plastic, ranging from 8 to 124 samples per fish with averaging 34 +/- 13 MPs/individual, were extracted from gastrointestinal tracts of fish. The majority of the ingested particles consisted of fibres (74%), and blue coloured material was the most consumed microplastic. The polymers identified by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) were polyethylene and polypropylene. Consequently, this study suggested that the vast majority of A. tarichi were contaminated with microplastics and showed higher abundance in comparison with other worldwide studies so far.

Strontium Isotopes in Otoliths Reveal a Diversity of Natal Origins for Tarek (Alburnus Tarichi) in Lake Van, Turkey
(Elsevier, 2022) Saygin, Semra; Polat, Nazmi; Willmes, Malte; Lewis, Levi S.; Hobbs, James A.; Atici, Ataman Altug; Elp, Mahmut
Understanding the relative contributions of different spawning habitats to adult fish populations is central to effective fisheries management and species conservation. The Tarek (Alburnus tarichi) is an adfluvial cyprinid that is endemic to the alkaline-saline waters of Lake Van, Turkey. Tarek are culturally and economically important to the region, and also threatened by anthropogenic impacts, including poaching, dams, water diversions, pollution, and habitat degradation. Here we analyzed otoliths from 120 adult fish caught in Lake Van in 2016-2017 to reconstruct the age structure and natal origins of this Tarek population. Ages ranged from 2 to 10 years, with most fish belonging to the 2011-2014 cohorts (age 3-5). We analyzed strontium isotope ratios from water samples collected in 2016 and 2018 to build a baseline map and then used linear discriminant function analysis to classify Tarek to their likely natal origins. We found that adult Tarek originated from at least 7 different major tributaries of Lake Van, with a majority of fish originating from the Gevas and Engil tributaries in the south. Furthermore, the relative contributions of fish from each tributary varied among years, suggesting that a mosaic of natal habitats may be important for population stability. These results suggest that protection of all Lake Van watersheds from anthropogenic disturbance could be valuable for maintaining the stability of the Lake Van Tarek population and fishery.

Toxicity of Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate To Tarek (Alburnus Tarichi) Larvae
(Ankara Univ, Fac Agriculture, 2024) Kankaya, Ertugrul; Atici, Ataman Altug
Linear alkyl benzene sulfonate is a group of anionic detergents widely used in domestic and industrial applications. It causes adverse effects by mixing with aquatic environments. Chemicals mixing with aquatic environments affect fauna and flora at different levels. This study was carried out to determine the toxicity of linear alkyl benzene sulfonate for the larvae of tarek (Alburnus tarichi Guldenstadt, 1814), a fish living in the Van Lake basin which has economic and ecological value. The chemical was administered at concentrations of 0.0, 0.6, 1.2, 1.8, 2.4, and 3.0 mg L-1 in the acute test and 0.0, 1.2, and 2.4 mg L-1 in the chronic test. Tests were carried out using 100 larvae in each group. Bioassays were carried out at mean temperature of 20.9 +/- 0.4 degree celsius. A median lethal concentration of 4.883 (4.099-6.482) mg L-1 at 96 hours was calculated for the larvae. Glutathione content, superoxide dismutase and glutathione S-transferase activity decreased significantly at 1.2 mg L-1 and increased significantly at 2.4 mg L-1 compared to controls (P<0.05). The malondialdehyde content increased significantly depending on the increase in chemical concentration (P<0.05). Linear alkyl benzene sulfonate is toxic to tarek larvae in terms of the measured biochemical parameters.

Ağır metallerden bakır, kadmiyum, kurşun ve selenyum belirlenmezken, diğer ağır metal ortalama seviyeleri Mo> Mn > Al > Zn > Fe > Cr > Co > Ni > As şeklinde olmuştur. Ağır metal kirlilik indeks ortalama değeri ise 147.4±25.2 hesaplanmıştır. Sonuç: Su örnekleri ağır metal indeksi (HPI) kalite sınıfına göre genel olarak “kullanılamaz su” sınıfında yer almıştır. Sonuçlara göre “mükemmel” sınıfta örnek noktası yer almazken, N1 “iyi” sınıfta yer alan tek nokta olmuştur. N2, N3, N4, N5, N6 ve N7 noktaları “kullanılamaz su” sınıfında yer almıştır.
