Article The Effect of Enamel Matrix Derivatives on Root Coverage: a 12-Month Follow-Up of a Randomized Clinical Trial(Sociedade Brasileira de Pesquisa Odontologica, 2019) Aydinyurt, Hacer Sahin; Tekin, Yasin; Ertugrul, Abdullah SeckinSubepithelial connective tissue grafts (SCTGs) with a coronally advanced flap (CAF) are accepted as the gold standard for covering denuded root surfaces. In recent years, enamel matrix derivatives (EMDs) have been used for their regenerative potential in periodontics. The aim of this split-mouth and randomized controlled study was to assess the clinical and aesthetical impacts of EMD application in combination with SCTG+CAF in patients with Miller's Class I and II gingival recessions in contralateral canines of the maxilla. Participants who underwent SCTG+CAF+EMD application were identified as the test group (n = 19) and those who underwent SCTG+CAF as control group (n = 19). The outcome parameters were recession depth/width, root coverage percentage, and root coverage aesthetic score (RES). RES was evaluated by two calibrated blind periodontists one year after the treatment. Statistically significant root coverage percentage was observed at one year post-treatment for both groups (p < 0.05). However, significant differences between the groups were not observed in terms of total RES and complete root coverage rate (p > 0.05). The test group had significantly better results than the control according to the soft tissue texture and mucogingival junction alignment results (p < 0.05). These results indicate that EMDs contribute to the healing of soft tissue without scarring. As a result of better wound healing, the EMD-added group exhibited better results in terms of the harmony of the mucogingival junction between adjacent teeth. This paper is the first split-mouth study in which SCTG+CAF and SCTG+CAF+EMD were compared using RES in bilateral canines.Article Effects of Injectable Platelet-Rich Fibrin in Experimental Periodontitis in Rats(Springer, 2021) Aydinyurt, Hacer Sahin; Sancak, Tunahan; Taskin, Cem; Basbugan, Yildiray; Akinci, LeventInjectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF) is an effective biological material that positively contributes to angiogenesis, wound healing, inflammation, regeneration processes, etc. This research aimed to evaluate the effect of i-PRF in rats with experimental periodontitis. Following the development of ligature-induced periodontitis, 24 Wistar albino rats were divided into three groups. Group-1: scaling and root planing (only-SRP); Group-2: SRP + i-PRF; Group-3: only- i-PRF. Heart blood from six donors was used for the i-PRF application. i-PRF was administered as a subgingival injection in the relevant groups on the 1st, 3rd, and 7th days. The tissues were evaluated histopathologically and immunohistochemically. Also, bone structures were examined using micro-CT. According to the data obtained, no statistically significant difference was observed among the groups in terms of bone resorption, inflammation, bone volume, bone levels (mesial/distal), and IL-1 beta, IFN-r, TNF-alpha, VEGF values (p > 0.05). However, bone mineral density was statistically significantly different among the groups (Group3 > Group2 > Group1) (p < 0.0001). Subgingival injection of only-i-PRF showed promising results in periodontitis treatment but contribution to SRP has not been proved according to this study results. The study results suggested that the i-PRF application was as effective as SRP in reducing bone loss, modulating inflammatory process, and effecting cytokines in experimental periodontitis. The significant effect of i-PRF on bone mineral density was the most remarkable result.Article Evaluation of Biochemical and Clinical Effects of Hyaluronic Acid on Non-Surgical Periodontal Treatment: a Randomized Controlled Trial(Springer London Ltd, 2020) Aydinyurt, Hacer Sahin; Akbal, Damla; Altindal, Dicle; Bozoglan, Alihan; Ertugrul, Abdullah Seckin; Demir, HalitBackground Recent studies reported that hyaluronic acid (HA) has anti-inflammatory, anti-edematous, and anti-bacterial activities in dentistry, particularly in gingival disorders caused by subgingival plaque microorganisms. Aims This study aimed to evaluate the early term effects of HA as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) on clinical parameters, periodontal inflamed surface area (PISA), and adenosine deaminase (ADA), catalase (CAT), and glutathione (GSH) levels in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) in periodontitis. Methods A total of 24 periodontitis patients per group were included in this randomized-controlled study. The study population was divided into four groups: in Group 1: SRP+ saline; in Group 2: SRP + HA gel; in Group 3: SRP+ HA mouth rinse; and in Group 4: SRP + HA mouth rinse + HA gingival gel were applied. At baseline and week 4, clinical parameters and PISA were calculated. Also, biochemicals' (ADA, CAT, and GSH) levels were determined by spectrophotometric analysis. Results There was a statistically significant improvement in clinical parameters and PISA in all four groups in control sessions (p < 0.05). There was a significant decrease in ADA in GCF and significant increases in CAT and GSH levels after SRP (p < 0.05) in all four groups. The groups that were administered only gel (2nd and 4th) were different from other groups in terms of ADA, CAT, and GSH levels at 1st week (p < 0.05). Conclusion HA application as an adjunct to SRP did not affect the clinical results, although, in the control sessions following the application, the results were favorable for the biochemical data in gel-applied groups.Article Evaluation of Knowledge About and Attitudes Towards Toothbrush Disinfection, Personal Plaque Control, and Periodontal Diseases of Patients Presenting To Dental Clinics(Wiley, 2023) Altindal, Dicle; Aydinyurt, Hacer Sahin; Yalcin, Duygu KorkmazObjectives The present study aims to evaluate patients' knowledge about toothbrush disinfection (TBD), plaque control, knowledge, and awareness of periodontal diseases (P-knowledge and P-awareness). Methods The study enrolled 121 participants (70 women and 51 men). Participants were asked to fill out a survey containing questions about demographic characteristics, toothbrushing habits, toothbrush storage conditions, toothpaste use, TBD, P-knowledge, and P-awareness. The periodontal clinical parameters (GI, PI, PPD, CAL, BOP, and GR) and DMFT index were recorded. The patients were informed about TBD, and 1 month later, the participants were contacted again and asked whether they disinfected their toothbrushes. Results The participants (51.2%) do not have any knowledge about TBD. Most of those who reported disinfecting their toothbrushes think that washing toothbrushes with tap water is disinfection (23.1%). One month after the TBD training, only 36.3% of the participants reported that they disinfected, albeit not regularly, their toothbrushes with white vinegar. While there was no statistically significant relationship between genders in terms of visiting dentists, a significant relationship was found between genders in terms of toothbrushing frequency (p < 0.05). P-awareness was found to be "medium" while P-knowledge was at a "low" level. While there was no statistically significant difference between income levels in terms of P-knowledge levels, a significant difference was found between genders and educational backgrounds in terms of P-knowledge levels (p < 0.05). Conclusions The results of the study suggest that the participants do not have enough knowledge about toothbrush storage conditions, toothpaste sharing, and TBD. Collaborating with dental hygienists to raise awareness about oral health and TBD may have a positive impact.Article Evaluation of Periodontal Status and Interleukin Levels in Pregnant Women With Hellp Syndrome(Kerman Univ Medical Sciences, 2022) Aydinyurt, Hacer Sahin; Cetin, Orkun; Aydogdu, Hasan Murat; Karaman, Erbil; Taskin, Cem; Sahin, Hanim Guler; Alkhatib, Mohammed F. A.BACKGROUND AND AIM: Hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelet (HELLP) syndrome is a pregnancy-specific disease that affects many systems of the body. Its etiopathogenesis has not been fully elucidated. HELLP syndrome is characterized by hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet counts. It has a prevalence of 0.2%-0.8% in pregnant women. This study aimed to compare periodontal status as well as interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-37 levels in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of healthy pregnant women and pregnant women with HELLP syndrome. METHODS: This study included 20 patients with HELLP and 20 healthy pregnant women. The clinical periodontal parameters [plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL)] were recorded and GCF samples were collected. IL-6 and IL-37 levels were measured in GCF samples using the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. The data collected from healthy pregnant women and patients with HELLP were compared with statistical analysis. RESULTS: There was no statistically significant difference between healthy pregnant women and pregnant women with HELLP in terms of periodontal clinical parameters. There was a statistically significant difference in terms of IL-6 levels (P < 0.05); however, no statistically significant difference was determined in terms of IL-37 levels in GCF. CONCLUSION: This is the first study to evaluate periodontal status as well as IL-6 and IL-37 levels in GCF in pregnant women with HELLP syndrome. The results of the study showed that IL-6 levels were significantly higher in pregnant women with HELLP syndrome, but there was no significant difference in terms of other parameters. Further research is needed to evaluate the relationship between HELLP syndrome and periodontal disease.Article An Experimental Investigation of the Effects of Chronic Stress on Bone-To Contact(Korean Acad Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, 2019) Dundar, Serkan; Bozoglan, Alihan; Yaman, Ferhan; Kirtay, Mustafa; Bulmus, Ozgur; Aydinyurt, Hacer Sahin; Yanen, CenkObjectives: This study aimed to investigate the effects of chronic restraint stress on the osseointegration of titanium implants. Materials and Methods: Twenty adult male Wistar albino rats were used in the study. After surgical insertion of titanium implants into the metaphyseal part of the tibial bone, rats were randomly divided into two groups: a control group (CNT group) and an experimental restraint stress group (RS group). In the CNT group, titanium implants were inserted surgically, and rats received no further treatment during the 47-day experimental period. In the RS group, restraint stress was applied for 3 hours per day for 45 days, beginning 2 days after implant surgery. Weight of the rats was measured prior to surgery and at the end of the study to analyze the effects of stress. At the end of the experimental period, rats were euthanized, and implants and surrounding bone tissues were used for undecalcified histological analysis. Serum cortisol levels were assessed in cardiac blood samples from the rats following centrifugation. Results: Average weight of rats in the RS group was lower than that of rats in the CNT group after the experimental protocol had been completed (P<0.05). Further, serum cortisol levels were higher in the RS group than in the CNT group (P<0.05). There were no significant differences in bone-implant connection levels between the two groups (P>0.05). Conclusion: The data analyzed in this study suggest that chronic restraint stress did not adversely affect rats during a 45-day osseointegration period.Article Il-6, Tnf-Α Levels and Periodontal Status Changes During the Menstrual Cycle(Wiley, 2018) Aydinyurt, Hacer Sahin; Yuncu, Yusuf Ziya; Tekin, Yasin; Ertugrul, Abdullah SeckinObjectives Sex steroid hormones are thought to affect periodontal tissues. A clear understanding of the effect of the menstrual cycle on oral tissues would be an important milestone in the timing of dental interventions in the future. The aim of this longitudinal, prospective study was to evaluate clinical periodontal parameters and levels of interleukin-6 IL-6 and tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-) in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) during the menstrual cycle. MethodsResultsForty-five patients were included in this study. Clinical periodontal parameters and levels of IL-6 and TNF- were evaluated at three points of the menstrual cycle: menstruation day MD, ovulation day (OD) and premenstruation day (PmD). Levels of IL-6 and TNF- were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. There were no statistically significant changes in plaque indexes or probing depths during the menstrual cycle (p>0.006) The differences between OD and PmD for gingival index and bleeding on probing were significant (OD>MD) (p<0.006). Statistically significant differences in TNF- and IL-6 levels in the GCF were observed during the menstrual cycle (PmD>OD>MD) (p<0.006). ConclusionsPeriodontal tissues did not exhibit evident changes, but this study demonstrated that the menstrual cycle affected the periodontium and induced inflammatory situations during the menstrual cycle.
