Article Adenocarcinoma of the Larynx: a Case Report With Histochemical and Immunohistochemical Studies(2004) Bayram, I.; Ugraş, S.; Kiriş, M.; Reçber, D.Adenocarcinomas constitute a histologically diverse group of rare laryngeal neoplasms accounting in aggregate for less than 1% of all laryngeal carcinomas. Adenocarcinoma of the larynx "not otherwise specified" (NOS) is a very uncommon neoplasia, but it shows a high degree of malignancy. We report a case of adenocarcinoma "NOS" arising in the larynx of a 60-year-old man. Histologically, the tumor tissue was composed of only adenocarcinoma component. Histochemically, the adenocarcinoma cells demonstrated Alcian blue pH: 2.5 and PAS reactivity, but did not include argentaffin and argyrophil granules. Immunohistochemical studies revealed negative reactivity for desmin, HMB45 and NSE. S-100 and chromogranin was focally positive, cytokeratin was diffusely positive.Article Analgesic and Hepatoprotective Effects of Chelidonium Majus L(University of Ankara, 2007) Sever Yilmaz, B.; Özbek, H.; Saltan Çitoǧlu, G.; Uǧraş, S.; Bayram, I.; Erdoǧan, E.Water extract of Chelidonium majus L. (CM) was investigated for analgesic effect in mice and hepatoprotective effect in rats. Analgesic activity of the extract was tested using tail-flick test. Mice were injected CM intraperitoneally (i.p.) in doses of 50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg end 200 mg/kg. Pain tresholds were measured with tail-flick test before administration and at 30th, 90th and 150th minutes after treatment. Hepatoprotective activity of CM on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced acute liver toxicity was also studied. Rats were injected CM i.p. in doses of 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg. CM had no analgesic activity at 50 and 100 mg/kg doses. However at 200 mg/kg dose, it produced higher analgesic activity than aspirin at 90th minute. At the 150th minute, its analgesic activity was equal to that of aspirin. CM (100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg) showed no significant influence on the increased levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and bilirubine in CCl4 treated animals. Histopathological examination did not reveal any significant difference between CM (100 mg/kg) and CCl4 groups. The results of this study clearly indicate that C. majus. has analgesic activity at 200 mg/kg dose in mice. However C. majus. has no hepatoprotective effect against carbon tetrachloride-induced liver toxicity in rats.Article Annular Elastolytic Giant Cell Granuloma: Case Report(2012) Güneş Bilgili, S.; Karadaǧ, A.S.; Çalka, Ö.; Önder, S.; Bayram, I.Annular elastolytic giant cell granuloma is a rare, granulomatous skin disease. It affects mainly middle-aged women. Lesions are annular plaques with raised borders and atrophic centers on the sun exposed skin. Diagnosis is based on histopathological findings of a granulomatous reaction with elastolysis and phagocytosis of elastic fibers by multinucleated giant cells and the absence of elastic fibers in the center of the granuloma. Thirty four year- old male patient presented to our department with a three-month complaint of erythematous annular papules and plaques, with an atrophic center and elevated borders erythematous on the forehead that gradually increased in number and size without associated symptoms. A diagnosis of annular elastolytic giant cell granuloma is made based on the clinical and histopathological findings. We reported this case due to its rarity and to emphasize that the possibility of annular elastolytic giant cell granuloma should be kept in mind as an entity for differential diagnosis during the clinical evalutions granulomatous skin disease on facial located. F.; Bayram, I.; Cankaya, H.Concha bullosa is the most common anatomic variant of the middle turbinate that usually remains asymptomatic. If the mucosal lining of pneumatized middle turbinate becomes inflamed, symptoms such as nasal obstruction, post-nasal discharge, snoring, headache, and fever occur. We report a case of concha pyocele (concha bullosa mucocele) in a 19-year-old girl. Computed tomography identified a right intranasal mass expanding towards the medial wall of the right maxillary sinus, nasal septum and right ethmoidal cells. The concha pyocele caused obstruction of the ostiomeatal complex, leading to right maxillary, ethmoid and sfenoid sinusitis. The patient was endoscopically treated under local anaesthesia. Histological examination of the mass revealed an active chronic inflammation caused by a foreign body.Article A Case of Lung Adenocarcinoma Presenting as Miliary Appearance(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2020) Çilingir, B.M.; Sunnetcioglu, A.; Özgökçe, M.; Bayram, I.Multiple benign conditions may be the cause of miliary nodules, but the most common cause is metastatic disease. Even so miliary metastasis of lung cancer is rarely seen. The most common lung cancer with a miliary distribution is adenocarcinoma. It is often difficult to diagnose adenocarcinomas with a progressive course. Anamnesis, physical examination, imaging methods can give an idea but diagnosis should be confirmed histopathologically. As in our case, tissue biopsy should be performed for diagnosis. We aimed to present this case because we performed a tru cut biopsy which is rarely used for histopathologic diagnosis and the miliary nodules in the lung of adenocarcinoma is a rare condition. © 2020, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. R.The purpose of the study was to determine whether along and in combination melatonin (MLT) and pentoxlfylline (PTX) exerted beneficial effects on histopathological changes and changes in oxidant and antioxidant systems in liver caused by CCl4-induced liver toxicity in mice. Mice were randomly divided into six groups: control, olive oil, toxicity, MLT, PTX, PTX+MLT. MLT 10 mg/kg/day, PTX 50 mg/kg/day, and the same individual doses in MLT+PTX combination were given intraperitoneally to mice for 7 day. CCl4 0.8 mg/kg/day was administered on the 4th, 5th, and 6th days of therapy in all groups except the control and olive oil groups. In the toxicity group, increased concentrations of malondialdehyde (MDA) and lipid hydroperoxides (LOOH) and decreased glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and catalase (CAT) activities were found compared to the control and olive oil groups (p < 0.05). Compared to the toxicity group, both the PTX group and the PTX+MLT group had decreased MDA and LOOH levels, whereas MLT reduced only LOOH levels (p < 0.01). MLT, PTX and MLT+PTX increased the GSH-Px and CAT activities compared to the toxicity group (p < 0.05). MLT increased CAT activity compared to PTX and MLT+PTX (p < 0.05). Superoxide dismutase enzyme activity did not change in any group (p < 0.05). Histopatholically, ballooning, degeneration, apoptosis, and bridging necrosis were seen in the toxicity group. MLT, PTX and MLT+PTX decreased the apoptosis and bridging necrosis (p < 0.01), and PTX and MLT+PTX decreased balloon degeneration compared to the toxicity group (p < 0.01). These results indicate that administration of PTX and MLT alone and in combination before onset of liver toxicity might prevent the oxidative damage by reducing oxidative stress and increasing antioxidant enzyme levels.Article The Effect of Obesity on Response To Neoadjuvant Therapy in Locally Advanced Gastric Cancer(Asian Pacific Organization for Cancer Prevention, 2020) Sakin, A.; Sahin, S.; Sakin, A.; Aldemir, M.N.; Bayram, I.; Kotan, C.Introduction: The effect of obesity on response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) remains unknown. We aimed to investigate the effect of obesity on response to NACT and survival in locally-advanced gastric cancer (GC). Methods: From 2010 to 2019, 142 GC patients with clinical stage III disease who underwent curative surgery after NACT were enrolled. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to body mass index (BMI) as follows; BMI < 25 kg/m2, BMI = 25-30 kg/m2, and BMI > 30 kg/m2. The Mandard tumor regression grading system was used for tumor regression grade (TRG). Results: Of the 142 GC patients, 45(31.7%) were female. The median age was 58 years. BMI was < 25 kg/m2 in 60 (42.3%) patients, 25-30 kg/m2 in 44 (31%) patients, and > 30kg/m2 in 38 (26.8%) patients. The numbers of patients with TRGI-II, TRGIII, and TRGIV-V were 35 (24.6%), 44 (31%), and 63 (44.4%), respectively. There was no statistically significant difference among BMI groups in terms of disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) (p = 0.919 and p = 0.398, respectively). According to TRG groups; mDFS was 46 months in TRG I-II, 28 months in TRG III, and 18 months in TRG IV-V (p<0.001). In multivariate analysis, presence of perineural invasion and lymphovascular invasion were the factors affecting TRG. Conclusion: In our study, we found that pre-treatment obesity did not affect the TRG in clinical stage III GC patients. However, a better TRG status was associated with improved survival. © 2020 Asian Pacific Organization for Cancer Prevention.Article Effect of Safran, Safranal and Crocin Which Are Active Ingredients of Saffron (Crocus) on Erythrocyte Fragility and Hematological Parameters in Carbon Tetrachloride Intoxicated Rats(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2016) Arihan, O.; Oto, G.; Bayram, I.; Aras, I.Carbon tetrachloride is a toxic chemical and well known for its carcinogenic property. Intoxication with carbon tetrachloride causes serious liver injury and it is used as an experimental model for triggering liver related diseases. Saff ron (Crocus) species are well known bulbous ornamental and aromatic plants. Many of the saffron species are used in ethnomedicinal practices. In addition both saffron species and their ingredients are also subject to scientific research. In this study 72 rats were divided into 9 groups (n=8 in each group). Groups were set as control, olive oil, carbon tetrachloride, safran, safranal, crocin, carbon tetrachloride + safranal, carbon tetrachloride + crocin. Administrations were conducted for 7 days. Erythrocyte osmotic fragility and some selected hematological parameters were assessed. Results state significant increase in erythrocyte fragility due to carbon tetrachloride and amelioration due to active ingredients of saffron. Among hematocrit, hemoglobin and red blood cell count parameters only significant alteration was observed in safran with an increase in red blood cell count. Different administration schemes can be evaluated in future studies in order to assess detailed impact of saffron constituents on hematological parame ters and erythrocyte integrity. © 2017 Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. Grierson (Asteraceae) on the Acute Liver Toxicity in Rats(Academic Journals inc, 2010) Tutuncu, M.; Ozbek, H.; Karaca, M.; Akkan, H. A.; Bayram, I.; Cengiz, N.; Him, A.The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the diethylether extract of Helichrysum plicatum DC. subsp. plicatum (HP) and Tanacetum balsamita L. subsp. balsamitoides (Sch. Bip.) Grierson (Asteraceae) (TB) in carbontetrachloride (CCl(4))-induced acute liver toxicity in rats. Acute liver toxicity was induced by injecting CCl(4) (0.8 mL kg(-1)) intraperitoneally for 7 days. The control group received isotonic saline only. The reference group received 50 mg kg(-1) silibinin. TB and HP extract was injected in doses of 25, 50 and 100 mg kg(-1). Body weights were measured daily during the experiment. On the 8th day of the experiments blood and liver samples were collected. Serum Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were measured in serum samples. Tissue samples were evaluated histopathologically. Some of the rats in TB and HP groups died during the experiments. Serum ALT levels were higher in the TB and HP groups than those in the CCl(4) group. Histopathological findings were similar in the CCl(4), TB and HP groups. The body weight loss was more in the TB and HP groups compared to that of the CCl(4) group. It is concluded that the diethylether extract of Helichrysum plicatum DC. subsp. plicatum and Tanacetum balsamita L. subsp. balsamitoides (Sch. Bip.) Grierson (Asteraceae) did not have a protective effect in carbontetrachloride (CCl(4))-induced acute liver toxicity in rats and even exacerbated the toxicity.Article Extra-Axial Subarachnoid Ependymoma Mimicking a Pca Schwannoma(Turkish Neurosurgical Society, 2005) Yilmaz, N.; Kiymaz, N.; Mumcu, Ç.; Bayram, I.The presentation, diagnosis, and treatment are described for a patient with an ependymoma involving the left cerebellopontine angle (PCA). A 34-year-old woman had left facial paralysis, hearing loss and headache in 8 months. Computerized tomography (CT) revealed a mass lesion of the left PCA which was enhanced homogeneously. Magnetic resonance imaging also (MRI) showed the mass in the left PCA which was high-intense on T1-weighted images, iso- and high-intense on T2-weighted images and homogeneously enhanced by administration of Gd-DTPA. The patient was operated on and the tumor was totally removed. Histopathological examination of the specimen revealed a typical ependymoma. The postoperative course was uneventful with complete resolution of the symptoms on admission. We present here an unusual case of PCA ependymoma located within the PCA and exhibiting no continuity with the ventricular systems. The radiological and clinical features of the tumour mimicked a PCA schwannoma.Article A Giant Paediatric Mandibular Aneurysmal Bone Cyst and Reconstruction With Bilateral Iliac Bone Graft(Royal Belgian Soc Ear, Nose, Throat, Head & Neck Surgery, 2009) Yuca, K.; Kiris, M.; Avcu, S.; Bayram, I.; Cankaya, H.; Kiroglu, A. F.A giant paediatric mandibular aneurysmal bone cyst and reconstruction with bilateral iliac bone graft. Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is an unusual, non-neoplastic, expansile lesion of the bone. ABC is not a true cyst and it is characterised by the replacement of bone by fibro-osseous tissue containing blood-filled sinusoidal or cavernous spaces. The expanding mass often disrupts the normal bony architecture, with erosion of the cortex. Surgical treatment consists of complete excision or curettage. In this report, we present a 5-year-old girl with a huge aneurysmal bone cyst in the corpus of the mandible, which was reconstructed with bone graft taken from bilateral anterior iliac crests.Article Hepatoprotective and Hypoglycemic Activities of Viburnum Opulus L(Turkish Pharmacists Association, 2010) Altun, M.L.; Özbek, H.; Çitoǧlu, G.S.; Yilmaz, B.S.; Bayram, I.; CengIz, N.In the present study, we investigated the hepatoprotective effect of the water extract of Viburnum opulus L. (VO) on carbon tetrachloride (CCL4)- induced hepatotoxicity in rats, hypoglycemic activity and acute lethality of the same extract in mice. Biochemical parameters of hepatic damage such as serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and bilirubin concentrations were determined. CCl4 (0.8 mL/kg i.p for 7 days) treatment increased the serum AST, ALT, ALP and bilirubin levels significantly as compared to controls. Treatment of animals with silibinin (50 mg/kg) +CCl4 (0.8 mL/kg i.p.) and VO (100 mg/kg, i.p.) +CCl4 (0.8 mL/kg i.p.) for 7 days lowered the levels of ALT and AST but was not significant. It was observed that ALP levels higher than normal values. The results of biochemical tests were also confirmed by histopathological examination. VO showed a few balooning degeneration, apoptosis, centrilobular necrosis in the liver tissue and bridging necrosis similar to silibinin-treated group. To compare hypoglycemic activity of VO, glibenclamide was used as the reference agent. However, VO has hypoglycemic activity neither in diabetic mice nor in their healty controls. The present study revealed that the water extract of Viburnum opulus had slight hepatoprotective effect on carbon tetrachloride-induced acute liver toxicity in rats and no hypoglycemic activity in mice. The LD50 of VO was determined as 5.447 g/kg.Article Hepatoprotective Effect of Foeniculum Vulgare Essential Oil: a Carbon-Tetrachloride Induced Liver Fibrosis Model in Rats(2004) Öbek, H.; Uǧraş, S.; Bayram, I.; Uygan, I.; Erdoǧan, E.; Öztürk, A.; Huyut, Z.Hepatoprotective activity of Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) essential oil was studied using a carbon tetrachloride-induced liver fibrosis model in rats. The hepatotoxicity produced by chronic carbon tetrachloride administration was found to be inhibited by Foeniculum vulgare essential oil with evidence of decreased levels of serum aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and bilirubin. Histopathological findings also suggest that Foeniculum vulgare essential oil prevents the development of chronic liver damage. The changes in body weights in the rats assigned to the study groups supported these biochemical and histopathological findings. The results of this study clearly indicate that Foeniculum vulgare essential oil has a potent hepatoprotective action against carbon tetrachloride-induced liver fibrosis in rats.Article Hypoglycemic and Hepatoprotective Effects of Foeniculum Vulgare Miller Seed Fixed Oil Extract in Mice and Rats(2003) Özbek, H.; Öztürk, M.; Bayram, I.; Uǧraş, S.; Çitoǧlu, G.S.Objective: We aimed to investigate median lethal dose (LD50) and hypoglycemic effect of fixed oil of Foeniculum vulgare Miller seed fixed oil (FFO) in mice and its hepatoprotective effect on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced liver injury model in rats. Method: Extract of FFO, glibenclamide (as a reference group) and physiologic saline (control group) were administrated to the healthy and diabet occured mice with alloxan. Before treatment in the first, second, third, fourth and 24th hours, blood was taken from the vena coccygea of mice. Blood glucose levels were measured. Twenty-four Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups (n=6), and the groups treated daily for seven days, by i.p. injections, of isotonic saline solution (ISS), olive oil, carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), CCl 4 + FFO respectively. Results: FFO did not significantly reduced blood glucose in alloxane-induced diabetic mice compared to ISS control group. In contrast, glibenclamide effectively reduced blood glucose of alloxane-induced mice in first, second, fourth and 24th hours as expected. In the CCl4-treated group and FFO-treated group serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels were quite high. In contrast, the control groups (group I and group II) had significantly lower levels of AST and ALT when compared with the CCl4 and FFO groups. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that FFO has neither a potent hepatoprotective effect against CCl4-induced hepatic damage in rats nor a hypoglycemic action in mice. The LD50 of FFO was determined as 5.52 mL/kg.Article Icmthyosis Linearis Circlimflexa: Not Always a Part of Netherton Syndrome(Medecine Et Hygiene, 2016) Bilgili, S. Gunes; Karadag, A. S.; Calka, O.; Onder, S.; Bayram, I.Ichthyosis Linearis Circumflexa: not always apart ofNetherton syndrome: Ichthyosis Linearis Circumflexa (ILC) is a rarely seen autosomal recessive keratinization disorder and is characterized by erythematous, polycystic, plaques with 'double-edged' scales. Its histological features resemble psoriasis. A triad of ichthyosis (usually Ichthyosis Linearis Circumflexa), trichorrhexis invaginata (a distinctive hair shaft disorder) and atopy is named as Netherton syndrome. Herein, we report a 12 year-old girl presenting with ILC not accompanied with typical atopy findings and hair shaft disorder.Article The Investigation on the Effect of the Vegetal Origin Ankaferd Blood Stopper in Experimental Intra-Abdominal Surgery Over Rabbits(2010) Duz, E.; Asian, L.; Alkan, I.; Bayram, I.; Kaya, A.; Ayhan, H.; Özer, E.With this study, it is aimed to conduct a research on the haemostatic effects of the herbal originated blood stopper product which is titled as Ankaferd Blood Stopper (ABS) in intra-abdominal surgery in rabbits. The materials of the study consist of 20 healthy adult New Zeeland rabbits, 10 male and 10 female ones. The rabbits were divided into two groups as working group and control group. The left abdominal part of rabbits was incised by 5 cm, their skin, cutaneous connective tissue and muscles were incised, respectively. About 1-2 mL gauzed bandage tampons which were saturated with Ankaferd Blood Stopper applied on all of 10 cases. The time passed for the blood to stop was measured by the chronometer. Moreover, bleeding spots with 1 cm length and 5 mm depth were made by bistoury on the liver and spleen. The tampons saturated with ABS were applied on the liver and spleen for 90 sec with medium pressure. The tampons with the dimensions of 4X4 cm were applied on bleeding spots of the control group with medium pressure. The time passed for the blood to stop was recorded. The time passed for blood stopping was compared. With Ankaferd Blood Stopper, the haemostasis was achieved within 9 sec for application in skm, 19 sec in coetaneous connective tissue, 42 sec in muscles, 147 sec in liver, 162 sec in spleen in experimental group while haemostasis was achieved within 220 sec for application in skin, 256 sec in coetaneous connective tissue, 238 sec in muscles, 550 sec in liver and 400 sec in spleen. As a conclusion, when the blood stopper product which is known as Ankaferd Blood Stopper is compared to the control group in external bleeding, it is seen that it achieves an effective haemostasis. © Medwell Journals, 2010.Article Is Immunohistochemical Sex Hormone Binding Globulin Expression Important in the Differential Diagnosis of Adenocarcinomas(Asian Pacific Organization for Cancer Prevention, 2016) Bulut, G.; Kosem, M.; Bulut, M.D.; Erten, R.; Bayram, I.Adenocarcinomas (AC) are the most frequently encountered carcinomas. It may be quite challenging to detect the primary origin when those carcinomas metastasize and the first finding is a metastatic tumor. This study evaluated the role of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) positivity in tumor cells in the subclassification and detection of the original organ of adenocarcinomas. Between 1994 and 2008, 64 sections of normal tissue belonging to ten organs, and 116 cases diagnosed as adenoid cystic carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the salivary gland, lung adenocarcinoma, invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast, adenocarcinoma of stomach, colon, gallbladder, pancreas and prostate, endometrial adenocarcinoma and serous adenocarcinoma and mucinous adenocarcinoma of the ovary, were sent to the laboratory at the Department of Pathology at the Yuzuncu Yil University School of Medicine, where they were stained immunohistochemically, using antibodies against SHBG. The SHBG immunoreactivity in both the tumor cells and normal cells, together with the type, diffuseness and intensity of the staining were then evaluated. In the differential diagnosis of the adenocarcinomas of the organs, including the glandular structures, impressively valuable results are encountered in the tumor cells, whether the SHBG immunopositivity is evaluated alone or together with other IHC markers. Further extensive research with a larger number of cases, including instances of cholangiocarcinoma and cervix uteri AC [which we could not include in the study for technical reasons] should be performed, in order to appropriately evaluate the role of SHBG in the differential diagnosis of AC.Conference Object Mucormycosis in a Patient With Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia: a Case Report(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2018) Demircioglu, S.; Dogan, A.; Ekinci, O.; Duzenli, U.; Baran, A.; Bayram, I.; Demir, C.Letter Polymorphous Low-Grade Adenocarcinoma of Left Parotid Gland(2010) Gelincik, I.; Bayram, I.; Cankaya, H.Article Primary Giant Leiomyoma of the Ovary -: Case Report(I R O G Canada, inc, 2006) Erdemoglu, E.; Kamaci, M.; Bayram, I.; Guler, A.; Guler Sahin, H.Primary leiomyoma of the ovary, which is of unknown origin, is an extremely rare tumor of ovary. We report a rare case of giant primary ovarian leiomyoma with an unusual presentation, ascites, elevated CA125 and discuss the preoperative imaging findings. A 45-year-old woman was referred for evaluation of an adnexal mass of 8 x 9 cm with ascites and elevated CA125 levels. Preoperative imaging studies were in accordance with fibroma/thecoma. At laparotomy total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy were performed. Histological and immunhistochemical examination revealed primary ovarian leiomyoma.
