Article Assessment of Thyroid Nodules in Children: a Single Center Experience(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2020) Bitkin, E.Ç.; Karaman, S.; Başaranoğlu, M.Thyroid nodules in children are less common than adults, but with a higher risk of malignancy, metastasis and recurrence. Therefore, detection, follow-up and treatment of thyroid nodules in children is very important. Our study retrospectively analyzed the demographic features, concomitant diseases and ultrasonography (USG) findings of thyroid nodules in children and aimed to obtain information about incidence of malignancy. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical, laboratory, thyroid USG, Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) and surgical results of 45 pediatric patients with thyroid nodules. Forty-five patients were included in the study, female domination was present, and most of the patients were adolescents. Six (13.3%) of the patients had a family history of thyroid cancer, and one had a history of radiation. Thyroid-related disease was present in 53.3% of the patients. Five patients had non-thyroid disease. Thyroid function tests were within normal limits in 33 (73.3%) of the patients. In our patients with pediatric thyroid nodules, FNAB was underwent in 46.6% according to the nodule size, and malignancy was detected in 2.2% of our patient group. Careful evaluation of thyroid nodules that are rarely seen in adults but higher in malignancy than adults should be evaluated. Diagnostic research for thyroid cancer is mostly done in adult patients, our study contributes to the assessment of risk conditions in thyroid nodules in children. © 2020, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. All rights reserved.Article Carotid Intima-Media Thickness and Lipid Profile in Children Patients With Hypothyroidism(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2022) Çetin, M.; Eren, A.; Bitkin, E.Ç.; Yürektürk, E.; Goya, C.; Karaman, K.Hypothyroidism is a condition where there is a decrease or absence of thyroid hormone production as a result of a disorder occurring anywhere in the hypothalamo-pituitary-thyroid axis. There are very few studies in the literature reporting on the effect of hypothyroidism on lipid metabolism and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) in children. The present study was designed to determine whether hypothyroidism is associated with an increase in the CIMT and lipid levels in patients under thyroid hormone replacement therapy. The study included 30 children (under thyroid hormone replacement therapy) diagnosed with hypothyroidi and a control group comprising 30 healthy, euthyroid children. All the patients were examined for clinical characteristics, and the serum lipid levels and the CIMT were measured. Mean age was 8.47 ± 5.22 years in the patient group and 8.82 ± 4.91 years in the control group. Patient group TSH value was significantly higher than control group (9.95 ± 18.43, 1.93 ± 1.04, p = 0.021, respectively). The t otal cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and TG values were similar in both group (p = 0.065, p = 0.429, p = 0.219, and 0.391, respectively). CIMT values of the patient and control groups did not differ significantly ( 0.40 ± 0.08 and 0.39 ± 0.07, p = 0.920, respectively) In this study, contrary to the rare studies in the children's age group in the literature, no significant changes in lipid pr ofile and CIMT were detected in patients with hypothyroidism. All rights reserved.Article Does Growth Hormone Therapy Enlarge Pituitary Adenomas(Galenos Publishing House, 2022) Bitkin, E.Ç.; Kara, C.; Karaman, S.; Başaranoğlu, M.; Yokuş, A.; Tuncer, O.Objective: Pituitary adenomas are detected incidentally in some cases of childhood growth hormone deficiency. Growth hormones may affect tumor growth. This study analyzed the reliability of growth hormone therapy in patients with non-functioning pituitary adenomas. Methods: The study group included 16 hypopituitary patients with incidentally detected non-functioning pituitary adenoma and treated with recombinant growth hormone. Age- and sex-matched 16 healthy children with incidental pituitary adenoma detected during investigation of chronic headache were selected as the control group. The data of the two groups were retrospectively reviewed and compared regarding the change in adenoma size over time. Results: Changes in adenoma size in the patient and control groups were -0.1 (-0.8-0.3) mm and -0.1 (-0.5-0.3) mm, respectively (p=0.664). Adenoma size growth was detected in 3 patients in the patient group and 5 patients in the control group (p=0.685). Conclusion: Our data suggest that recombinant growth hormone therapy does not produce pituitary adenomas, and thus its use is safe in growth hormone deficient children with incidentally detected non-functioning pituitary adenomas. © Copyright 2022 by Medical Journal of Bakırköy published by Galenos Yayınevi.Article Retrospective Evaluation of Our Patients With Lymphadenopathy(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2020) Karaman, S.; Uslu, E.; Başaranoğlu, M.; Kamaşak, T.; Bitkin, E.Ç.Lymphadenopathy (LAP) is a common clinical finding in childhood. It is mostly reactive and has a good prognosis. Childhood cancers rarely occur. In our study, it was aimed to investigate the clinical and laboratory features of patients who were sent to the general child outpatient clinic due to LAP. The records of patients with LAP who applied to our General Children's outpatient clinics between January 2018 and December 2019 retrospectively. Age, gender, duration of complaint, treatment, systemic signs and symptoms, feat ures of lymph node, laboratory results was recorded The median age of 90 patients included in the study was 7 years; It takes place between 3-19 years. The complaints of the application were the most common neck swelling and submandibular and axillary sore after the second. Thirty (33%) of our cases had sore throat. Spleen and liver size were detected in 18 cases. In our study, 16% of cases were performed biopsy. Reactive hyperplasia in nine cases, nodular fasciitis in one case, granulomatous lymphadenitis in two cases, malignancy in two cases and Castleman Disease in one case were detected.
