Article Cavernous Hemangioma in Inferior Concha Presented With Hearing Loss(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2018) Çetin, Y.S.; Ari, M.; Bozan, N.Location of cavernous hemangioma in nasal cavity is a very rare condition. Herein we will report an adult male diagnosed with cavernous hemangioma located in inferior concha and causing otitis media with effusion that was treated with the minimally invasive trans-nasal endoscopic technique. Although there are many options in treatment of lesions in nasal cavity, we recommend the trans-nasal endoscopic approach since it is minimally invasive and it is sufficient in both bleeding control and complete removal of the cavernous hemangioma. © 2018, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. A 51-year-old female patient admitted to our clinic with the complaints of pain and swelling at the right of mouth floor and especially swelling during nutrition at the inferior of right jaw. In the intra oral examination; a large, sensitive with palpation, sides are erythematous solid mass in the right submandibular canal region was detected. In the ultrasonography examination, left submandibular gland was found significantly heterogeneous and 1 cm in diameter hyperechoic posterior shade showing stone at approximately 10 mm distance to Wharton duct was visualized. Sialolithiasis treatment varies according to the localization of the stone, duration of the symptoms, frequency of repetition and size of the stone. Either conservative or surgical techniques can be used for treatment. Surgically, either intraoral or extraoral approaches can be used. In our case, after removing the stone from the distal part of Wharton duct, original orifice of the duct was deactivated and distal part of the duct was marsupialised to mouth floor. Saliva discharge was seen from the new orifice inside the mouth at the postoperative 3rd week of the case. More clinical studies with increased numbers of cases are needed for accurate results of the treatment method. © 2017, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. OBSERVATIONS In the literature, eight cases of coil migration that occurred between 2 and 120 months after coil application have been reported, most of which were treated with surgical removal of the coil in a same-day surgery setting. LESSONS The case presented emphasized that coil protrusion and migration may lead to destruction in the skull base, thereby leading to serious consequences if left untreated, even in the absence of history of trauma. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first case in the literature that required additional invasive procedures due to recurrent bleeding that occurred several months after surgical removal of coils. Also, this report underlinedthe need for careful and long-term follow-up of coil materials used for the treatment of pseudoaneurysms caused by vascular injuries secondary to skull base injury during surgery. © 2022 The authors.Article The Relationship Between the Abo Blood Group and Tumor Diameters in Patients With Carotid Body Tumors(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2018) Bozan, N.; Duzenli, U.; Arı, M.; Turan, M.; Kıroglu, A.F.; Aslan, M.Several studies have assessed the association between blood group of ABO and many cancer types. Nevertheless, there was no data regarding the connection between blood group of ABO and tumor diameters in carotid body tumors (CBTs) patients. The purpose of our study was to analyse possible association between tumor diameters and gender, ABO blood group in CBTs patients compared to healthy controls. The demographic and laboratory data of 65 CBTs patients (57 females and 8 males) who underwent surgical intervention and 65 healthy controls (52 females and 13 males) were retrospectively analyzed. The mean age of CBTs patients was 51.81±9.82 years, and the mean age of the healthy subjects was 52.72±8.50 years. There were no statistically significant difference between two groups with regard to age and gender. The mean of tumor diameters was 3.72±1.50 cm (range=1-8 cm). There was no statistically significant difference between study groups according to AB0 blood group (p=0.87). The females/males ratio of patients was 57/8. The mean tumor diameters of females was 3.57±1.34 cm and the mean tumor diameters of males was 4.77±2.16 cm; the difference was statistically significant (p=0.03). There was a positive correlation between male gender and the tumor diameters (r=0.23, p=0.03). This is the first report investigating association between the tumor diameters and AB0 blood group in CBTs. Although CBTs were shown higher in females, tumor diameters were found significantly higher in males tha n females. However, we did not determine any association between AB0 blood group and tumor diameters. © 2018, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. In addition to otologic diseases; mood disorders, inflammatory diseases, thromboembolic pathologies may lead to tinnitus. Mean platelet volume (MPV), Platelet Distribution Width (PDW) and Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) were investigated as biomarkers in tinnitus patients. In this study, we aimed to find whether there is any association between these biomarkers and bilateral tinnitus patients. Fifty eight with tinnitus and 58 healthy subjects were included to the study. The distribution of age and sex in each group were equal. Hearing thresholds of tinnitus patients were obtained with pure-tone audiometry. Hematologic values were evaluated in each group and correlation between these values and audiometric data were investigated in tinnitus patients. PDW values of the tinnitus group were found statistically significantly higher than those in control group (p=0.041). NLR was found lower in tinnitus patients and it was statistically significant (p=0.001). MPV values were found similar in each group. In tinnitus group there were no correlation between hematologic values and audiometric data. In this study, we found blood marker value alterations in bilateral tinnitus patients, but there was no correlation with audiologic data. And so we need larger studies to obtain more significant results. © 2018, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. Our study population was made up of 30 patients with Bell palsy-15 men and 15 women, aged 25 to 68 years (mean: 50.4)-who were seen in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at a tertiary care medical center. For comparison purposes, we recruited 26 healthy age- And sex-matched controls-16 men and 10 women, aged 40 to 67 years (mean: 54.3). Serum samples were obtained from all participants before the initiation of steroid treatment to the Bell palsy patients. A correlation was sought between demographic data and serum levels of malondialdehyde, glutathione, catalase, and superoxide dismutase. We found that the serum level of malondialdehyde was significantly higher in the Bell palsy group and that the levels of glutathione, catalase, and superoxide dismutase were all significantly lower (p < 0.001 for all comparisons). Correlation analysis revealed that only superoxide dismutase levels were positively correlated with age (r = 0.347, p = 0.009). We suggest that oxidative stress and antioxidant mechanisms may be involved in the pathogenesis of Bell palsy. In this context, serum levels of malondialdehyde, glutathione, catalase, and superoxide dismutase may serve as biomarkers in the diagnosis and follow-up of Bell palsy. Confirmation of the validity, reliability, and reproducibility of these findings necessitates further prospective, randomized clinical trials in larger populations. © 2018 Medquest Communications LLC. R.; Sunnetcioglu, M.; Bozan, N.; Kara, H.; Demir, H.Introduction: Anthrax is a bacterial disease caused by the aerobic sporeforming bacterium Bacillus anthracis. It has been suggested that oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathogenesis of B. anthracis. The aim of this study was to investigate serum paraoxonase 1 (PON1) activity, catalase activity, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels in patients with cutaneous anthrax. Materials and methods: Fifteen patients with cutaneous anthrax and 15 healthy controls were enrolled in this study. The serum MDA levels, SOD levels, paraoxonase, arylesterase, and catalase activities were measured using a spectrophotometer. Results: The serum SOD levels, paraoxonase, arylesterase, and catalase activities were significantly lower in patients with cutaneous anthrax than in controls (for all, p < 0.001), whereas MDA levels were significantly higher (p < 0.001). No significant correlation was found between serum paraoxonase activity, arylesterase activity, SOD levels, and MDA levels (all, p > 0.05) in patients with cutaneous anthrax. Conclusions: The current study was the first to show decreased antioxidant levels and increased oxidant levels in patients with cutaneous anthrax. Therefore, decreased PON1 activity may play a role in the pathogenesis of cutaneous anthrax.Article Subcutaneous Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans in Parotid Region: Case Report(2013) Garça, M.F.; Kösem, M.; Turan, M.; Bozan, N.; Çankaya, H.Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a low-grade soft tissue sarcoma (fibrosarcoma) originated from dermal and subdermal layer of the skin. But subcutaneous localization is quite rare. It is one of the rare tumors and accounts for 0.1% of all malignancies. The tumor infiltrates into the deeps in the villous and finger shape. For this reason, it is quite difficult to get surgical margins in the tumor excision and the recurrence is a problem encountered frequently. An excision or Mohs technique of micrographic surgery is suggested by leaving a surgical space up to 5 cm from the tumor margines. In this case report, a case with DFSP atypically subcutaneous localized on superficial parotis gland was presented. It should be kept in mind that probability of the microscopic spread is high in these patients and they should be followed by reminding that the disease can recur in the following long years.Article Systemic Inflammatory Blood Markers in Patients With Tympanosclerosis(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2019) Düzenli, U.; Bozan, N.; Akın, R.; Kıroğlu, A.F.; Aslan, M.Tympanosclerosis is a disorder as known hyaline accumulation in the middle ear. Inflammation has been proposed in the development of tympanosclerosis. The mean platelet volume (MPV), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and red cell distribution width (RDW) are most common markers of systemic inflammation. Fourty patients who diagnosed tympanosclerosis intraoperatively and 35 subjects without tympanosclerosis were enrolled in this retrospective study. The MPV, RDW, neutrophil and lymphocyte as well as platelet counts were evaluated from complete blood counts in both trial participants. NLR was calculated. The purpose of this research was to determine blood systemic inflammatory markers in patients with tympanosclerosis. The average age of patients with tympanosclerosis was 23.4±9.2 years, and it was found 24.7± 8.9 years in subjects without tympanosclerosis. There were 21 female and 19 male in subjects with tympanosclerosis and 17 female and 18 male in subjects without tympanosclerosis. Two groups have similar results with respect to age and gender. There was no important difference between two research participants with respect to the MPV, RDW and NLR (p>0.05). We could not find any association between the markers of blood systemic inflammatory and tympanosclerosis. Therefore, tympanosclerosis does not seem to change the systemic inflammation. © 2019, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. The purpose of the present study was to assess the oxidative stress parameters including the thiol/disulphide homeostasis in patients with peripheral facial paralysis. A total of 32 patients with PFP and 32 healthy controls were recruited in this cross-sectional study. Serum samples were compared for thiol/disulphide homeostasis (TDH), total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), paraoxonase (PON), stimulated paraoxonase (SPON), arylesterase (ARES), ceruloplasmin (CLP), myeloperoxidase (MPO), and catalase (CAT) levels. There were no significant differences between PFP patients and the control group regarding age and gender distribution. Remarkably, TOS (p=0.034), CAT (p<0.001), ARES (p<0.001), native thiol (p<0.001), total thiol (p<0.001), and native thiol/total thiol ratio (p<0.001) were significantly higher in the control group. In contrast, serum ceruloplasmin level (p=0.005) as well as disulphide/native thiol (%) (p=0.001) and disulphide/total thiol (%) (p<0.001) ratios were found to be higher in PFP patients compared to the control group. Thiol/disulphide homeostasis that was suggested as a useful indicator of oxidant/antioxidant imbalance may be a practical marker in diagnosis and follow-up of PFP. Further studies are warranted to determine the effects of nutritional and therapeutic approaches for normalization of oxidative stress in treatment and prevention of PFP. © 2018, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. Its exact etiology remains known. Tongue base schwannoma is a remarkably rare form of schwannoma. Although it often presents with dysphagia and swelling, it may cause obstructive airway problems as its size increases. Since it affects all age groups, its differential diagnosis typically includes congenital, infectious masses, and benign/malignant neoplasia of vascular and mesenchymal origin. In this study, the authors report on a 43-year-old patient with tongue base schwannoma, and the authors also review the cases reported in the literature over the last 60 years in terms of mass size, primary presenting complaint, and surgical techniques preferred in the studies. © 2025 Mutaz B. E.; Ulusoy, S.; Sahin, E.; Bozan, N.; Avincsal, M. O.; Tutar, B.; Uyar, Y.Objective. This prospective, controlled study assessed how placing a stent into a newly formed ostium affects ostial patency, success and complication rates in endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy patients. Methods. In group 1 (40 eyes of 36 patients), both silicone tube intubation and tube stenting were performed. In group 2 (36 eyes of 34 patients), only silicone tube intubation was performed. Success, operative time and post-surgical complications were investigated two months post-operatively in each group. Results. The success rates were 92.5 per cent and 83.3 per cent for groups 1 and 2 respectively, but the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0294). The complication rates also differed between the two groups, but this was again insignificant. Conclusion. Compared with the use of a silicone tube alone, the addition of an ostial stent did not significantly increase the success rate of endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy.
