Article Accurately Localizing the Thyroid Tissue in Mature Cystic Teratoma of Ovary by Single-Photon Emission Computerized Tomography/Computerized Tomography(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2015) Demir, Yusuf; Ucler, Rifki; Alkis, Ismet; Bulut, GulayA 30-year-old woman with hyperthyroidism was admitted to hospital. Although increased thyroid function was found, the gland was normal in ultrasonography (USG). Additionally, thyroid iodine uptake and Tc-99m pertechnetate scintigraphy was normal. Abdomen USG detected a cystic pelvic mass in left ovary. A whole-body scan was performed 48 hours after oral ingestion of 29.6 MBq (0.8 mCi) 1-131 (iodine-131) revealed a round structure located to the left lower abdomen. Iodine uptake was detected in this cyst which was compatible with functional thyroid tissue demonstrated by SPECT/CT. The patient was underwent surgical operation and histopathology confirmed mature cystic teratoma. Accurate localization and depiction of thyroid tissue in ovary mass was provided with SPECT/CT.Article Acute Appendicitis in Two Children With Henoch-Schonlein Purpura(Maney Publishing, 2012) Bilici, Salim; Akgun, Cihangir; Melek, Mehmet; Peker, Erdal; Akbayram, Sinan; Bulut, Gulay; Dogan, MuratIn Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP), involvement of the ileum and ascending colon with vasculitis can mimic appendicitis and cause unnecessary appendicectomy. A 13-year-old boy presented with signs of HSP and abdominal pain. He was treated with prednisolone (2 mg/kg/day) for 10 days, but there was no improvement. At laparotomy he had acute suppurative appendicitis. A 12-year-old girl presented with HSP associated with abdominal pain and bloody diarrhoea and at laparotomy was also found to have suppurative appendicitis. Both patients had vasculitic areas in the ileum. In HSP, although suppurative appendicitis is rare, it should always be considered and appropriate investigations, including ultrasonography, undertaken.Article Analysis of Ki-67 Immunoreactivity in Recurring and Nonrecurring Nasal Polyps(B C decker inc, 2010) Kosem, Mustafa; Bulut, Gulay; Kaya, ZulkufObjective: Nasal polyps are common, abnormal lesions. Recurrence of the nasal polyposis is prevalent and a severe problem. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between Ki-67 immunoreactivity and the risk of recurrence of nasal polyps. Ki-67 staining of polypectomy material was tested as a risk factor for recurrence independent of etiologic factors or treatment modalities. Design: Retrospective study. Setting: University hospital. Main Outcome Measure: Ki-67 immunoreactivity. Methods: Pathologic specimens from patients with nonrecurrent and recurrent nasal polyps archived at the Department of Pathology were reviewed, and the most suitable blocks were chosen among the excision materials. Ki-67 antibody staining was investigated immunohistochemically using the avidin-biotin-peroxidase method. The percentages of nuclei immunostained for Ki-67 of at least 1000 epithelial cells in the most intensive staining areas at final magnification (3400) were calculated and defined as the labeling index. The Mann-Whitney U-test was used to compare the Ki-67 labeling index in the nonrecurring and recurring nasal polyp groups. Results: The mean Ki-67 labeling index was 1.4 +/- 1.972 (range 1-87 in 1000 epithelial cells) in the nonrecurrent nasal polyp group and 17.8 +/- 5.67 (range 82-446 in 1000 epithelial cells) in the recurrent nasal polyp group; the difference between the nonrecurrent and the recurrent group was significant (p < .01). Conclusion: The results of this study clearly demonstrate that proliferative activity in the surface epithelial cells of recurring nasal polyps is significantly higher than that in nonrecurring nasal polyps.Article Biochemical and Histopathologic Assessment of Effects of Acitretin on Epiphyseal Growth Plate in Rats(Termedia Publishing House Ltd, 2020) Onder, Sevda; Bilgili, Serap Gunes; Bulut, Gulay; Celik, Huseyin Tugrul; Oguztuzun, Serpil; Onder, Haci; Karadag, Ayse SerapIntroduction: Acitretin is a commonly used retinoid in dermatology. Although there are generally known side effects, the effects on the epiphyseal plaque and bone metabolism are not clear in the literature. Aim: To histopathologically investigate the effects on the epiphyseal plate and assess variations in bone metabolism caused by acitretin. Material and methods: Three groups were formed with 10 rats in each group. The 1st group (n = 10, 5 male, 5 female) were administered 10 mg/kg/day oral acitretin solution and the 2nd group (n = 10, 5 male, 5 female) were administered 3 mg/kg/day oral acitretin solution. The control group were given normal standard feed and water. Rats were sacrificed at the end of 4 weeks. The proximal tibias were excised and histopathologically and immunohistochemically assessed. Biochemical assessment was also carried out. Results: Staining with haematoxylin-eosin found reductions in the epiphyseal plate in the 1st and 2nd group compared to the control group, though this situation was not statistically significant. Immunohistochemical studies did not encounter Type II collagen in the epiphyseal bone, proliferative zone and hypertrophic zone in the control group, low dose acitretin solution group and high dose acitretin solution group. Type II collagen was not observed in osteoids and osteoblasts. Type I collagen was not observed in the hypertrophic zone and proliferative zone of any group. Conclusions: Our data show that though acitretin caused degeneration of the epiphyseal plate, it did not cause clear thinning and we identified no significant variations in bone metabolism markers.Article Bronchogenic Cyst Mimicking an Adrenal Mass in the Retroperitoneal Region: Report of a Rare Case(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2015) Bulut, Gulay; Bulut, Mehmet Deniz; Bahadir, Inci; Kotan, CetinWe report the surgical excision of a retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst that presented as a nonfunctioning left adrenal mass in a 25-year-old woman with continuous pain in the left flank. Preoperative biochemical testing confirmed that the mass was nonfunctional. Bronchogenic cysts are mostly benign congenital abnormalities that originate from the remnants of the primitive foregut and typically occur in the lung. Subdiaphragmatic and especially, retroperitoneal locations are rare. Despite the rarity of this pathologic entity, bronchogenic cysts should be considered in the differential diagnosis of retroperitoneal cystic lesions. Diagnosis must be definitively confirmed by histology.Article Can D-Dimer Levels Predict the Treatment Outcome in a Patient With Tuberculosis(Pakistan Medical Assoc, 2014) Dulger, Ahmet Cumhur; Karadas, Sevdegul; Gonullu, Hayriye; Beyazal, Mehmet; Bulut, Gulay; Gultepe, BilgeTuberculous peritonitis is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity particularly in the developing world. Delay in initiation of treatment distinctively increases mortality. Treatment response to anti-tuberculosis drugs is usually observed by regression of symptoms and clearance of ascites. With initiation of treatment, laboratory values including CA-125 levels generally return to normal levels in 3 months. However, there is still no consensus about treatment response during the follow-up period. Serum D-dimer level is used as an inflammation marker in some cases. A case with Tuberculous peritonitis successfully monitorised by serum D-dimer levels is presented.Article A Case of Granulomatosis With Polyangiitis and Pyoderma Gangrenosum Successfully Treated With Infliximab and Rituximab(Wiley, 2014) Donmez, Salim; Pamuk, Omer N.; Gedik, Mustafa; Ak, Recep; Bulut, GulayHere, we present a young male patient who was admitted with alveolar hemorrhage, arthritis and cutaneous lesions, who later developed bilateral orbital involvement and pyoderma gangrenosum (PG). He also had pathergy test positivity. The patient was refractory to conventional immunosuppressive therapy. Therefore, multiple devastating PG lesions and disease activity in granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) were controlled with infliximab. Later, rituximab was used with success to prevent recurrence of symptoms. The relationship of PG with various autoimmune diseases is known; however, PG in GPA has been only rarely reported. Biologic agents might prove to be effective in GPA and PG patients who are refractory to standard immunosuppressive therapy.Letter A Case of Sarcoidosis Diagnosed Via Skin Involvement(deri Zuhrevi Hastaliklar dernegi, 2019) Yavuz, Goknur Ozaydin; Yavuz, Ibrahim Halil; Aktar, Rojda; Bulut, Gulay; Bilgili, Serap GunesArticle Chemotherapy-Induced Acral Erythema With Involvement of the Face and Neck: a Case Report(Sage Publications inc, 2016) Ozkol, Hatice Uce; Calka, Omer; Bulut, GulayChemotherapy-induced acral erythema (CIAE) is a cutaneous response to diverse chemotherapeutic drug administration. These drugs cause symmetrical and painful erythema of palmoplantar surfaces. Bulla formation, desquamation, and subsequent reepithelialization may occur. Commonly, the lesions slowly resolve over 7-15 days, through desquamation, followed by regeneration of the skin. Here, we described a case of CIAE, with involvement of face and neck in a patient treated for breast cancer using a number of chemotherapeutic agents. Face involvement in CIAE has not been previously reported in the literature.Article Chronic Effects of Environmental Biomass Smoke on Lung Histopathology in Turkish Non-Smoking Women: a Case Series(inst Medical Research & Occupational Health, 2012) Gunbatar, Hulya; Sertogullarindan, Bunyamin; Ozbay, Bulent; Avcu, Serhat; Bulut, Gulay; Kosem, MustafaBiomass is widely used for fuel in developing countries. Particles and gases of biomass burning may cause changes in the lung. In this prospective study we investigated histopathological changes in the lungs of 42 non-smoking women [mean age (59 +/- 10) years] caused by biomass smoke. We valuated exposure to biomass smoke, case histories, and the findings of physical examination, radiology, bronchoscopy, and lung histopathology. Mean exposure to biomass smoke was (28 +/- 9) hour-year (1 hour-year equals 365 hours of exposure per year with average exposure of 1 hour a day). The radiological findings were mass (42 %), reticulonodular opacities (31 %), mediastinal lymphadenopathy (26 %), pleuro-parenchymal fibrotic banding (19 %), widening of the pulmonary artery (14 %), ground glass (11 %), mosaic perfusion (9 %), consolidation (9 %), segmental or subsegmental atelectasis (7 %), and bronchiectasis (7 %). The patients were diagnosed with lung cancer (35 %), interstitial lung disease (31 %), sarcoidosis (9 %), tuberculosis (9 %), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (4 %), chronic bronchitis (9 %), and metastasis (4 %). Bronchoscopy showed pilies, oedema, erythema, bronchus narrowing, endobronchial tumour, mucosal irregularity, increased vascularisation, blue-black anthracotic plaques, mucosal oedema, and purulent secretion. Transbronchial biopsies revealed neutrophil and lymphocyte leucocytes in the perivascular, peribronchiolar, and interalveolar septa, slightly enlarged connective tissue, thickening of the basal membrane, thickening of interalveolar septa, intimal and medial thickening of the vascular wall and vascular lumen narrowing, anthracosis between the cells and in the bronchiole epithelium. These findings confirm that biomass smoke has important toxic effects on the lung parenchyma, interstitium, and pulmonary vessels that may result in malignancies.Editorial Coexistence of Hepatocelluler Carcinoma and Cyst Hydatid Disease of the Liver(Pakistan Medical Assoc, 2014) Karadas, Sevdegul; Dulger, Ahmet Cumhur; Gonullu, Hayriye; Bulut, Gulay; Beyazal, MehmetThe evidence suggests that both delta hepatitis-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cyst hydatid disease (CHD) are frequently seen separately in people who live in the rural areas of Asia. However, there are still a few case reports about coexistence of these different diseases in the same liver. The current case illustrates a number of clinical problems that physicians face in the diagnosis of patients with basically different liver masses.Article Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging Findings of Primary Bladder Angiosarcoma: a Case Report(Elsevier Science inc, 2014) Beyazal, Mehmet; Pirincci, Necip; Yavuz, Alpaslan; Ozkacmaz, Sercan; Bulut, GulayPrimary bladder angiosarcomas are extremely rare but aggressive tumors. Due to the small number of cases (less than 30) reported to date, the information about natural tumor progression, optimal treatment procedure and prognosis are limited. Also, published reports of bladder angiosarcoma have not adequately featured imaging findings. Herein we report computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings of a 20-year-old male with primary angiosarcoma of the bladder. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. In this case report, a 51-year-old man presented with conjunctival swelling in the left eye. Conjunctival lymphangiectasis was diagnosed and a conjunctival resection was performed. No recurrence was found in follow-up examination at 9 months.Article Conventional Osteosarcoma of the Rib: a Case Report(Baycinar Medical Publ-baycinar Tibbi Yayincilik, 2012) Sehitogullari, Abidin; Bulut, Gulay; Cobanoglu, Ufuk; Bayram, IrfanPrimary tumors of the rib are relatively uncommon in adults and rare in children. In this article, we present a case who was operated due to conventional osteosarcoma of the rib in the light of the literature review. A 17-year-old female patient had been operated due to a rib tumor 54 months ago. There was no local recurrence or metastatic disease. Chest wall tumors, particularly those arising from bones, require histologic assessment to be considered benign; the differential diagnosis of malignant neoplasms should not be based on clinical and radiographic features, only.Article Dermatofibroma on Upper Extremity in Childhood Period(Professional Medical Publications, 2011) Ceylan, Mehmet Fethi; Karadag, Ayse Serap; Bulut, Gulay; Calka, Omer; Onder, HaciDermatofibroma is a common benign mesenchymal tumor composed of fibroblastic and histiocytic cells. It is also known as cutaneous benign fibrous histiocytoma. Although it may occur in any age, it is mostly common at twenties and thirties. It is more common in women than men and it is most seen at lower extremity. Herein, we report a 6-month-old female infant, who had dermatofibroma on her upper extremity.Article The Development of Giant Lipoma on the Bcg Vaccine Caused Scar(informa Healthcare, 2012) Bilgili, Serap Gunes; Karadag, Ayse Serap; Ceylan, Mehmet Fethi; Calka, Omer; Turktas, Ugur; Bulut, GulayLipoma is the most common mesenchymal tumors that accounts for about 6% of all soft-tissue tumors in children. The lesion size is usually around 1-2 cm that rarely reaches the bigger diameter. A 14-month-old baby girl was brought to our clinic for a progressively growing lesion on the left shoulder. The lesion started 4 months ago, and then was rapidly growing that caused pain and movement restriction. On the same site, there was a scar of BCG vaccination. The clinical and histopathological findings of the lesion were consistent with lipoma. The lesion was totally resected with no recurrence within 12 months. There are several complications related to BCG vaccination. However, the occurrence of lipoma on BCG vaccine caused scar has not been reported in literature. We reported this case because of its rarity and to emphasize that lipoma can present as a giant lesion in child.Article Diffuse Nodular Lymphoid Hyperplasia of the Small Bowel Associated With Common Variable Immunodeficiency and Giardiasis: a Rare Case Report(Springer Wien, 2014) Olmez, Sehmus; Aslan, Mehmet; Yavuz, Alpaslan; Bulut, Gulay; Dulger, Ahmet CumhurDiffuse nodular lymphoid hyperplasia (DNLH) of the intestine is an extremely rare lymphoproliferative disorder of uncertain etiology. Typically, numerous polypoid nodules composed of hyperplastic benign lymphoid tissue are present in the small and/or large intestinal mucosa. DNLH has been observed in association with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID). A 38-years-old man was admitted to our clinic due to dyspeptic complaints. An upper gastrointestinal system endoscopic examination revealed DNLH in the duodenum. A biopsy specimen showed the presence of nodular lymphoid hyperplasia and a Giardia lamblia infection in the duodenum. CVID was suspected, and the diagnosis was established by demonstrating a significant reduction in the serum gamma-globulin levels. DNLH is a rare benign condition with regards to diagnosis and treatment of unknown etiology. In patients with DNLH, screening for the immune deficiencies is being important in addition to histopathological examinations.Article The Effect of the Active Ingredient Thymoquinone on Flap Viability in Random Pattern Flaps in Rats(Springer, 2016) Kocak, Omer Faruk; Bozan, Nazim; Oksuz, Mustafa; Yuce, Serdar; Demir, Canser Yilmaz; Bulut, Gulay; Ragbetli, Murat CetinThymoquinone (TQ) is a plant extract that has been shown to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, angiogenic, antimicrobial, and anticarcinogenic effects. The aim of this study is to research how the use of TQ affects flap viability. 42 rats were placed into 6 groups, with 7 rats in each. A 3 x 10 cm McFarlane flap model was used on the test animals. The sham group had used neither surgical nor TQ treatment. The control group had surgery but no treatment afterwards. The preoperative TQ group was given oral doses of 2 mg/kg. TQ for 10 days preoperatively with no treatment after the surgical procedure. The postoperative TQ group received oral doses of 2 mg/kg TQ for 10 days after the surgical process. The preoperative + postoperative (pre + postoperative) TQ group was given oral doses of 2 mg/kg TQ for 10 days both preoperatively and postoperatively. Finally, the dimethylsulfoxide group received 10 mg/kg dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) for 10 days both preoperatively and postoperatively. Ten days after surgery the findings were evaluated. The average rates of necrosis were found to be 29.7 % in the control group, 19.18 % in the preoperative TQ group, 13.05 % in the postoperative TQ group, 8.42 % in the pre + postoperative TQ group, and 29.03 % in the DMSO group. The experimental groups had better area measurement, histopathological, and electron microscopic results than the control group (All; p < 0.05). We believe that, because of its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and angiogenic properties, thymoquinone is an agent that can prevent ischemia-reperfusion damage and, therefore, prevent necrosis.Conference Object The Effect of Vitamin E Prophylaxis on Experimental Amikacin-Induced Nephrotoxicity Model(Oxford Univ Press, 2016) Bulut, Gulay; Ari, Elif; Basbugan, Yildiray; Alp, Hamit Hakan; Bayram, IrfanArticle Effects of Jnk Inhibitor on Inflammation and Fibrosis in the Ovary Tissue of a Rat Model of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome(E-century Publishing Corp, 2015) Bulut, Gulay; Kurdoglu, Zehra; Donmez, Yeliz Bozdemir; Kurdoglu, Mertihan; Erten, RemziObjective: In our study, we aimed to investigate the effects of Jun N-terminal kinase inhibitor (SP600125) on fibrosis and inflammation in rats with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Method: 50 Wistar-albino rats were divided into five groups (n=10 each): control group, sham group, PCOS group, SP600125+ PCOS group and SP600125 group. In the estradiol valerate (EV)-treated group in which PCOS was injected with a single 4 mg/kg i.p. of EV in 0.2 ml sesame oil and the rats were sacrificed on day 60. The estradiol valerate (EV)-treated + SP600125-treated group was injected with a single 4 mg/kg i.p. of EV in 0.2 ml sesame oil. As of day 60, the treatment group was additionally given 15 mg/kg i.p. of SP600125 once daily for 4 consecutive days and the rats were sacrificed on day 65. Histopathological findings (ovarian morphology, edema, inflammatory cell infiltration, vascular congestion and hyperemia) and collagen type IV immunoexpression were assessed. Results: The SP600125+ PCOS group showed a significant level of improvement in ovarian follicle morphology, edema, inflammatory infiltrate, vascular congestion and hyperemia as compared with the PCOS group. Furthermore, collagen type IV immunoexpression showed a significant reduction in staining intensity on the theca cell layer and ovary stroma as compared to the PCOS group. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the therapeutic effect of SP600125 in the prevention of PCOS in an experimental model.
