Gratitude, Hope, Optimism and Life Satisfaction as Predictors of Psychological Well-Being
(Ani Yayincilik, 2019) Kardas, Ferhat; Cam, Zekeriya; Eskisu, Mustafa; Gelibolu, Sedat
Purpose: The mainstream psychology has mostly focused on the negative factors that threaten human mental health. With the emergence of positive psychology approach, the human strengths have started to be studied and the number of studies on the issue of happiness and well-being has increased. The aim of this research is to reveal the level of prediction for psychological well-being by the variables of gratitude, hope, optimism and life satisfaction. Method: Research sample consisted of 510 students from various faculties and departments of four different universities. The study group consisted of 359 female (70.4%) and 151 male (29.6%) university students. The age range of participants varied between 17 and 30. Findings: All the variables discussed in the study were positively related to each other, and the variables of gratitude, optimism, hope, and life satisfaction all together accounted for about 51% of the variance of psychological well-being. Gratitude was determined as the most predictive variable for well-being and it was followed by the variables; hope, optimism, and life satisfaction, respectively. Accordingly; gratitude predicted 35.4% of the variance in well-being alone; gratitude and hope predicted 45.4% together; gratitude, hope, and optimism predicted 48.8% together; while gratitude, hope, optimism, and life satisfaction predicted 50.7% percent altogether. Implications for Research and Practice: These findings are thought to be important in terms of revealing variables that predict well-being with a high level of variance. It is thought that these findings can be used in the field of mental health especially by the researchers and practitioners using intervention studies. Especially, since the gratitude level accounts for 35.4% of the variance in well-being alone, gratitude interventions can effectively be used to improve well-being level. (C) 2019 Ani Publishing Ltd. An Investigation Into the Role of Attachment Insecurities in Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms
(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2018) Boysan, Murat; Cam, Zekeriya
The paper discusses the associations between adult attachment and OCD symptoms in light of current cognitive-behavioural theories of OCD. The role of attachment system in OCD has been increasingly recognised. The aim of this paper was to investigate and evidence for direct and indirect relations between attachment insecurities, obsessional beliefs and OCD symptoms. Data were collected from a sample of university students (N=334) in a cross-sectional research design. Adjusting for age, sex, income, paternal education and maternal education, attachment anxiety and avoidance in combination with obsessional beliefs (responsibility/threat estimation, perfectionism/certainty and importance/control of thoughts) were regressed onto obssessionality using logistic regression analysis. One-way MANOVA comparisons of obsessionality and obsessive beliefs were run across four attachment styles. Finally, the affect regulation model of attachment theory was refined and tested in relation to OCD symptomatology. Attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance significantly contributed to severity of obsessive-compulsive symptoms. More specifically, respondents with fearful and preoccupied attachment styles reported greater scores on obsessive-compulsive symptomatology and obsessional beliefs. Using a structural modelling approach, we found responsibility/threat estimation significantly contributed to obsessional symptomatology via attachment anxiety and avoidance.

The Relation Between Mobbing Behaviors Teachers in Elementary Schools Are Exposed To and Their Burnout Levels
(Elsevier Science Bv, 2011) Tanhan, Fuat; Cam, Zekeriya
Aim of this study is to determine the relation between the mobbing behaviors teachers are exposed to and their burnout levels. With this purpose, data of the study were gathered from 451 teachers in total (230 elementary school teachers and 221 teachers from other specific fields of study) working at schools with different socio-economical levels in Van Province. Data gathered were firstly classified via clustering analysis; thereby the level of mobbing and burnout was determined. Then the relation between these two variables was determined through Spearman Rho (r(s)) correlation coefficient. In brief, teachers suffer from moderate mobbing acts at schools and show a moderate level of emotional exhaustion. Furthermore, teachers have a low level of depersonalization and high level of personal accomplishment. There is also a significant and moderate relation between total scores of mobbing act and emotional exhaustion; and depersonalization and burnout. On the other hand, there is a poor relation in negative direction between personal accomplishment and mobbing act. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
