Article Abo and Rh Blood Groups Frequency in Men and Women Living in Eastern Turkey(2006) Dilek, I.; Demir, C.; Bay, A.; Akdeniz, H.; Öner, A.F.Objective: ABO and Rh blood groups which are basic for determination of blood compatibility consist of the most important tests of blood center. In this study, we aimed to find out the rates of ABO and Rh blood groups in male and female donors in our region. Therefore, donors attending to our blood center within the last five years were investigated taken into account their gender. Methods: Blood groups were examined by gel-centrifugation or tube agglutination methods. Results: Out of totally 33.193 individuals, 14.716 were female (44.3%) and 18.477 males (55.7%), and average age was 34 (range 20-60 years old). Taken into account the whole donors, A blood type was found as 43.8%, O blood type 30.8%, B blood type 16.2% and AB blood type 8.6% in rate. With respect to blood type frequency in genders group A was in the rate of 44.1% and 43.6%, group O 31% and 30.5%, group B 16.3% and 16.1% and group AB 8.6% and 9.8% in women and men, respectively. The Rh positivity rate into totally whole donors was 85.5%, being 86.0% in men and 84.8% in women. Conclusion: ABO and Rh blood groups rates were very near to each other in women and men, and also the average rate was very similar to averages in Turkey.Conference Object Acquired Von Willebrand Disease in Chronic Myeloproliferative Disorders(Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd, 2018) Aslanboga, M.; Ekinci, O.; Demir, C.Article Acute Myeloblastic Leukemia-Associated Marfan Syndrome and Davidoff-Dyke Syndrome: a Case Report(2008) Demir, C.; Bay, A.; Dilek, I.; Öner, A.F.We present herein a 23-year-old man with acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML) associated with Davidoff-Dyke-Masson syndrome (DDMS) and Marfan syndrome (MS). The diagnosis of DDMS was based on findings including left facial asymmetry, left hemiparesis, mental retardation, right cerebral hemiatrophy, dilatation of the ipsilateral lateral ventricle and calvarial thickening. The diagnosis of MS was based on clinical findings including tall stature, myopia, retinitis pigmentosa, blue scleras, scoliosis, pectus excavatum, arachnodactyly and low ratio of upper/lower body segment. The patient developed hepatosplenomegaly, gingival hypertrophy and pancytopenia. Peripheral blood film and bone marrow examination showed that most of nucleated cells were blasts; immunophenotype of those cells showed CD11+, CD13+, CD14+, CD33+ and HLA-DR+. These findings confirmed the diagnosis of AML (FAB-M5). After induction chemotherapy, remission was obtained. To the best of our knowledge, our case is the third report of AML in MS syndrome, while AML associated with DDMS and MS has not been previously reported in the literature.Article Assessment of Patients With Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura(2010) Demir, C.; Altintaş, A.; Paşa, S.; Ali Kaplan, M.; Küçükzeybek, Y.; Ayyildiz, O.Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a severe microvascular occlusive thrombotic microangiopathy characterized by systemic platelet aggregation, organ ischemia, profound thrombocytopenia, and fragmentation of erythrocytes. Unexplained occurrence of thrombocytopenia and anemia should prompt immediate consideration of the diagnosis and evaluation of peripheral blood smear for evidence microangiopathic hemolytic anemia. Excellent remission and survival rates were achieved by therapeutic plasma exchange. We reviewed characteristics and response rates to plasmapheresis of our TTP patients. A total of 25 cases were diagnosed. The parameters of hemoglobin and platelet were analyzed at presentation, as well as the number of plasmapheresis sessions and adjunctive treatment given. We found a response rate of 80 percent to plasma exchange. Response was better in 23 patients who presented with idiopathic TTP. Response was poor in patients with TTP secondary to underlying metastatic carcinoma. Two patients relapsed and one of the relapsed patients died. Plasmapheresis is mandatory and effective for primary TTP. Plasmapheresis may not be effective in all instances, especially if TTP is secondary to underlying disseminated cancer.Article The Association of Nlr and Mpv With Treatment Responses, Disease Stages, and International Prognostic Index Scores in Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2019) Demircioğlu, S.; Doğan, A.; Ekinci, Ö.; Demir, C.Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. International Prognostic Index (IPI) is the most commonly used scoring system predicting the prognosis. In this study, we aimed to investigate the association of Neutrophil/Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) and Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) with IPI score, treatment responses, and disease stage. A total of 113 DLBCL patients who received R-CHOP treatment were recruited for this study. Demographic data, disease stages according to the Ann Arbor staging system, IPI scores, treatment methods, treatment responses, complete blood counts, and biochemical tests of the patients were retrospectively evaluated. Elevated NLR had statistically significant correlation with disease stage and IPI score (p=0.001 and p=0.006, respectively). However, the NLR had no statistically significant correlation with the interim-treatment and post-treatment responses (p=0.187, and p=0.96, respectively). MPV showed no significant relationship with disease stages (p=0.56), IPI scores (p=0.188), interim-treatment and post-treatment responses (p=0.122, and p=0.239). In conclusion, NLR was associated with IPI score and disease stage. This suggests that NLR, a cheap and easy investigation, may be used to obtain information about the prognosis. © 2019, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. Materials and Methods: The records of 87 adult patients admitted to the Department of Hematology of Yuzuncu Yil University Faculty of Medicine between January 2013 and May 2017 and diagnosed with acute DIC were retrospectively examined. Of the patients participating in the study, 64 (73.6%) were female and 23 (26.4%) were male. Regarding the distribution of etiology in patients with acute DIC, the most common etiology, at 49.3%, was obstectic pathologies. Acute DIC was more frequent in women and younger adults (p = 0.001). Patients with trauma had the highest mortality rate (p = 0.001). Patients diagnosed with acute DIC who died as a result were older, and mortality was higher in males (p < 0.001 for both). Comparing ISTH scores, patients with acute DIC had significantly higher mortality (p = 0.028). In this study, a majority of the patients diagnosed with acute DIC were young and female. De spite their high incidence of acute DIC however, the mortality rate for young female patients was low. The mortality rate was higher in elderly and male patients, although intensive treatment was administered following diagnosis of acute DIC. We believe that early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are of critical importance for patients thought to have acute DIC, regardless of underlying condition. © 2018, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. Method: In this study, recipient's name, surname, age, gender, blood component, the clinic where transfusion have done, transfusion indications, whether or not transfusion history and complication, the amount and type of blood component, product waiting period in the blood center, vital findings before and after transfusion. Result: Percentage of transfused products was as follows: whole blood (50%), erytrocyte suspension (26%), fresh frozen plasma (19.8%) and platelet suspension (4.2%). Utilization rate of blood and blood components by service type was as follows: 30.8% in internal medicine, 11.9% in general surgery, 16.8% in obstetrics and gynecology, 15.3% in department of child health and disease and 25.2% in other service. Acute complication was observed in 3% of patients. 1.8% of them was developed acute febrile nonhemolytic transfusion reaction. Urticaria was observed in 0.95% of cases. Hypocalsemia in 2 patients (0.1%), hypotension in 2 patients (0.1%) using ACE inhibitory, hypertension in one patients (0.05%) and hypercalsemia in one patient (0.05%) after transfusion were observed in patients. Conclusion: Full blood utilization rates are high but it's close to Turkey average. Transfusion-related acute reaction rates were similar literature rates. It has suggested that information work should be increased to increase the use of component and to protect patients from unnecessary risk.Article Effect of Pretreatment Platelet Parameters on Survival in Limited Disease Small Cell Lung Cancer(Asian Pacific Organization for Cancer Prevention, 2019) Sakin, A.; Yasar, N.; Arici, S.; Demir, C.; Geredeli, C.; Aksaray, F.; Cihan, S.Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of platelet parameters before concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) on survival of patients with limited disease small cell lung cancer (LD-SCLC). Methods: This study consisted of patients who received CCRT due to LD-SCLC in the oncology clinic between 1997-2017. Examined platelet parameters included total platelet count (TPC), mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width, and platelet-lymphocyte ratio. The cut-off value for TPC was determined as 306x109/U (sensitivity: 62%, specificity: 75.5%), where patients below or equal to this level was classified as Group I, and those above as Group II. Results:The study included 90 patients whose mean age was 59 years (range: 42-83) and male ratio was 80.0% (n=72). Near three-fourths of patients (74.4%) were at clinical stage III. Among stage I-II patients, mOS was found as 126 months for Group I whereas it had not been reached in Group II (p=0.158). Stage III patients showed significantly lower mOS for Group 1 (16 [range: 14.1-17.8] months) compared to that in Group 2 (19.0 [range: 15.6-62.8] months; p=0.002). In multivariate analysis, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance score (p=0.003), clinical stage (p < 0.001), prophylactic cranial irradiation (p=0.004), and TPC (p=0.031) was determined as the most significant factors affecting survival. Conclusion: Our study suggests association of high baseline levels of TPC to improved survival in patients scheduled to undergo CCRT for LD-SCLC. Considering easiness and universal availability of TPC measurement, potential utilization of this biomarker may be promising to predict survival, albeit requiring validation by further well-designated prospective studies. © 2019, Asian Pacific Organization for Cancer Prevention.Article Effect of Radiotherapy on Erythrocyte Catalase, and Carbonic Anhydrase Activities, Serum Levels of Some Trace Elements and Heavy Metals (Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, Mn, Fe, Mg and Co) in Cancer Patients(Ijrr-iranian Journal Radiation Res, 2022) Tuncer, G. Seven; Demir, H.; Izmirli, M.; Cakir, T.; Yilmazer, G.; Demir, C.Background: We tried to reveal the relationship between the levels of some important minerals, rare elements and heavy metals by measuring serum cobalt (Co), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), catalase (CAT) and carbonic anhydrase (CA) levels in head and neck, CNS, esophagus, stomach and breast cancers receiving radiotherapy. Materials and Methods: Serum Cu, Fe, Pb, Zn, Co, Mg, Mn and Cd levels were measured using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Carbonic anhydrase activity (CA), CO2 hydration measurements were made using bromothymol blue method as indicator. Results: Catalase activity, carbonic anhydrase activity and serum copper, lead, zinc, iron, cobalt, cadmium, manganese, magnesium measurements for baseline and post-radiotherapy values differ greatly in cancer patients compared to healthy subjects (p<0.05). Conclusion: As a result, these findings have a significant impact on the pathophysiology of cancer. It can be argued that this paper shows a preliminary study for examining the effect of radiotherapy treatment on the activity of erythrocyte catalase, carbonic anhydrase and serum levels of cobalt, lead (Pb), zinc, iron, copper, cadmium, magnesium and manganese in the head and neck, CNS, stomach, esophagus and breast cancers receiving radiotherapy treatment.Article Gastrıc İntestınal Metaplasıa And Covıd 19 İnfectıon(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2020) Aydın, M.; Dülger, A.C.; Özer, S.; Dirik, Y.; Keskin, S.; Demir, C.Gastric intestinal metaplasia (GIM) is defined as immigration of enteric or colonic mucosa within gastric lining.Gastric intestinal metaplasia (GIM) is a premalign condition seen in gastric lining. It is prevalent in Asia and may lead to gastric carcinoma at a rate of 1% annually. COVID 19, which has been a global issue since late 2019, causes mostly respiratory symptoms; however, some patients may present with gastrointestinal symptoms including diarrhea, vomiting (5%) and abdominal pain (3.8%).We tried in this text to handle any possible association between COVID 19 infection and GIM. In this retrospective study we included 39 COVID 19 patients and 180 age-matched control subjects to compare rate of intestinal metaplasia. All statistical analyses were performed with SAS software (SAS Institute, Cary, N.C.). The clinical and radiological characteristics of patients were compared using Student's t-test. Intestinal metaplasia was found in 11 (28%) of 39 patients while in 7 (3,9%) of 181 controls, which meant a statistical significance (p<0,05). Of the 181 subjects, atrophy was found in 39 (21%) whereas it was noted in 9 (23%) of 39 patients, which yielded no statistical significance (p>0,05). We found that GIM is a premalignant condition that can lead to COVID 19 infection. © 2020, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. The results of some studies, however, failed to establish such an association in the aetiology of these disorders. In this study, hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibodies were searched in 116 patients with lymphoproliferative disorders (LPD) by a third-generation macro ELISA technique. Fifty two of the patients had been suffering from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), 38 from Hodgkin's disease (HD), 15 from chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL), 6 from Waldenstrψm macroglobulinaemia (WM) and 5 from multiple myeloma (MM). Voluntary blood donors were taken as a control group. The results showed that anti-HCV positivity in all cases was significantly higher than the control group (8.6% vs 0.8%). The rates of anti-HCV positivity were 33.3%, 5.7%, 7.8%, 6.6% and 20% respectively in WM, NHL, HD, CLL and MM cases. In conclusion, the findings of our study demonstrate the probable role of HCV infection in the development of neoplastic LPD in our region.Article Herpes Simplex Encephalitis(2010) Karsen, H.; Demir, C.; Karahocagil, M.K.; Sünnetcioǧlu, M.; Akdeniz, H.We presented four cases diagnosed with Herpes simplex virus encephalitis of those treated in our clinic in 2006 one of whom died, one recovered without any sequels.
