Article Comparison of Classic, Theranekron and Classic-Plus Theranekron Treatment on the Foot and Mouth Disease Lesions in Cattle in Van, Diyarbakir and Ankara Regions in Turkey(Medwell online, 2012) Duz, Erkan; Icen, Hasan; Arserrim, Neval B.; Cakmak, Firat; Bakir, Bahtiyar; Uysal, ErsinThe study compared the influence of Tarantula cubensis extract 1:100/D2 (Theranekron (R), Richter Pharma, Austria) and classic treatment (daily injection of fluniksin meglumin., oxytetracycline, washing the mucosa and feet lesions with 10% sodium bicarbonate and antibiotic spray for 3 consecutive days) for the oral, hoof and mammary lesions treatment in foot and mouth disease in cattle. Ninety mixed breed cattle with foot and mouth diseases were used. Clinical symptoms included fever inappetance oral, hoof and mammary lesions. The cattle were divided into three groups. The first group, the second and the third were treated with classic, theranekron and theranekron plus classic treatments respectively. About 48 h after theranekron and theranekron plus classical application, recovery occurred and body temperature, appetence returned to normal more rapidly than that of the group on which only classical treatment methods were used.Article Evaluation of Tear Secretion by Phenol Red Thread Test in Holstein Cows(Polish Soc veterinary Sciences Editorial office, 2022) Saglam, Kamil; Duz, ErkanThis study aimed to measure the normal physiological tear production of Holstein cows with the phenol red thread (PRT) test to determine the reference value specific to this test and to examine the effect of the number of births, age and seasonal air temperature on the amount of tear production. The study was performed on 50 Holstein cows aged 3-7 years in two groups. The PRT test was performed in group 1 in January and in group 2 at the end of May. The age and birth numbers of all animals were recorded. The mean amount of tear secretion for all Holstein cows (n = 50) was 32.90 +/- 0.73 mm/15 sec. The mean value was 34.47 +/- 1.28 mm/15 sec. for group 1 (n = 23) and 31.55 +/- 0.73 for group 2 (n = 27). When the seasonal temperature increased from 12 degrees C to 20 degrees C, the difference in the mean amount of tear production between group 1 and group 2 was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Although there was a tendency for the amount of tears produced to increase with the increase in the number of births, it was not statistically significant (P> 0.05). Similarly, the decrease in the number of tears with increasing age was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). This study determined reference values for tear secretion in healthy Holstein cows with the PRT test. Higher PRT scores were recorded in winter than in spring (P < 0.05), and the change in PRT values was not significant as the number of births and age increased (P > 0.05).Article Measurement of Tear Production in Van Cats With the Phenol Red Thread Test(2023) Duz, Erkan; Sağlam, KamilThe aim of this study is to determine normal tear secretion levels in healthy Van cats by PRT test and to investigate the relationship between tear level and gender and age. Twenty adult Van cats, who were brought to the clinic and found to be healthy after examination, were included in the study. These cats were tested without the use of any medicine. The cats who took part in the experiment ranged in age from two to fiveyears, with a mean age of 3.25±1.07. There were 12 female cats and 8 male cats in the group. Commercial kits were utilized for the testing. The mean PRT value for the Van cat was determined as 12.3±1.895 (9-18) mm/15 sec. Males had a mean of 11.875±1.246 (10-13)mm/15 sec. and females had a mean of 12.583±2.234 (9-18) mm/15 sec. There was no statistically significant difference in the mean of males and females in the group and no difference as age increased (p>0.05). In conclusion, the PRT test findings in this study can be used as reference values in the diagnosis of eye diseases affecting the tear production ability of Van cats.Article Medical and Surgical Treatment of Gastric Impaction in Juvenile Ostriches(Medwell online, 2009) Aslan, Logman; Karasu, Abdullah; Ozkan, Cumali; Duz, Erkan; Kaya, Abdullah; Akgul, YakupRadiological diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment options of the constipation problem seen in ostrich chicks were investigated in this study. The study was performed in a farm that 60 ostrich chicks were kept that are between 8 and 12 weeks of age. Our clinic was applied to upon seeing loss of appetite, weight loss and sudden death in 2 animals in the farm. Fifteen sick ostrich chicks that gastric impaction problem was found with clinical and radiological examination were included in the study. In the ostrich chicks that were found to be sick in clinical examination, clinical symptoms were observed like loss of appetite, weakness, dehydration, reduced number of defecations, drooping wings, messiness of feathers and inability to stand. Medical treatment was applied to 7 animals that general health status was not severe and that obstruction was found to be not complete in radiological examination and proventriculotomy operation was performed in 8 animals that stomachs were found to be full with foreign materials in radiological examinations and with serious health condition and also in 2 ostrich chicks that did not respond to medical treatment. Five patients out of 7 that medical treatment was applied and 8 patients out of 10 that were treated surgically responded to the treatment and got well. In the autopsies of the animals that did not respond to the treatment and died, macroscopic edema, erosion and hemorrhagic ulcers were found in proventriculus and ventriculus mucosa and in addition, stomach was filled with stones, sand, pieces of wood, metal and glass, rough feed particles and clover fibers. It was concluded that radiological examination will determine the level of obstruction, make the treatment easier and will direct it. It was also, concluded that emergency surgical treatment in cases with complete obstruction not responding to medical treatment would be beneficial if performed with no time loss.Article A Serological Investigation of Pestiviruses in Sheep in Eastern Border of Turkey(Springer, 2011) Tutuncu, Mehmet; Duz, Erkan; Karaca, Mehmet; Akkan, Hasan Altan; Keles, Ihsan; Bakir, Bahtiyar; Tasal, IbrahimAll pestiviruses are important veterinary pathogens causing economic losses in cattle, sheep, and pigs. In this study, blood samples randomly collected from 465 sheep were analysed for the presence of antibodies to pestiviruses (bovine viral diarrhea virus, border disease virus) using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in the province of Van and their towns. The seroprevalance were estimated as 75.9% and 60.0-82.5% in the sampled animals and sampled towns, respectively. The results revealed that pestiviruses are important abort pathogens in the province of Van and their towns.Article A Subvulvar Leiomyosarcoma in a Simmental Cow-A Case Report(Univ Zagreb vet Faculty, 2022) Uyar, Ahmet; Duz, Erkan; Keles, Omer F.; Yaman, Turan; Yener, ZabitIn this case, a mass located subcutaneously in the perineal subvulvar region of a six-year-old Simmental cow was examined clinically, pathomorphologically and immunohistochemically. Macroscopically, the solitary, whitish yellow-tumor mass was 19x15x6 cm in size, weighed 1610 grams, and had a lobular structure with a few small cystic formations in the section. Histopathological examination revealed that the tumor parenchyma had smooth muscle-like cells with abundant cytoplasm, pleomorphic cells with blunt-ended or cigar-shaped nuclei, anisocytosis, anisokaryosis and karyomegaly. Immunohistochemically, strong positive expression for ??-SMA, vimentin, Ki67 and slight positive for desmin were found, while immulolabeling for pancytokeratin (AE1/AE3), S-100, CD31 and CD34 were negative. In conclusion, on the basis of these findings, the tumor was diagnosed as leiomyosarcoma.
