Article Bilaretal Complex Regional Pain Syndrome After Bilateral Calcaneal Fractures: Case Report(2010) Hiz, Ö.; Ediz, L.; Ceylan, M.F.; Gülcü, E.; Tekeoǧlu, I.Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a painful complication of a fracture, surgery, or other type of injury. Currently KBAS is categorized as CRPS-1 when no clear nerve injury is defined, and CRPS -2 when associated with clear nevre injury. Central and peripheral theory have been reported in etiopathogenesis of CRPS -1. Generally, it occurs in the injured limb but, it may ocur in the opposite extremities. İn this article, we have presented a case developing bilateral CRPS -1 after bilateral calcaneal fracture.Article Cardiac Tamponade During Methotrexate Treatment in a Patient With Rheumatoid Arthritis; Is It Due To Viral Infection, Rheumatoid Arthritis or Methotrexate Therapy?: Case Report(2003) Adak, B.; Ediz, L.; Budancamanak, M.; Demirel, A.Here we describe a Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patient who died due to cardiac tamponade during methotrexate (Mtx) treatment while her synovitis remained inactive. Mtx is an effective therapy for articular and extraarticular manifestations of RA and currently most widely used disease modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD). However Mtx on occasion may play a role in facilitating the development of the extra-articular manifestations of RA in some rare cases. In this case report, the causes of cardiac tamponade in patients with RA during Mtx therapy and the efficacy of Mtx on the life expectancy in patients with RA discussed by review the literature.Article The Clinical Effect of Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections on Symptomatic Meniscal Tears of the Knee(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2021) Delen, V.; Ediz, L.; Alpaycı, M.This study aims to assess the clinical efficacy of intra-articular platelet-rich plasma injections in symptomatic meniscus tears of the knee. Forty one patients (12 males, 29 females; mean age 38.2±8.37 years; range 21 to 50 years) with meniscal tear included in the study. Lateral patellofemoral approach was used for intra-articular platelet-rich plasma injections. The platelet-rich plasma applications were performed three times one week apart. Patients were evaluated usingVisual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Lequesne Index. Baseline scores were obtained pre-first injection and compared to satisfaction scores one-and four-weeks post-last injections. Compared with pre-treatment, at post-treatment weeks 1 and 4, both VAS and Lequesne Index scores significantly decreased (p<0.001). Also, compared with post-treatment week 1, at post-treatment week 4, both VAS and Lequesne Index scores significantly decreased (p<0.001). Our study results suggest that platelet-rich plasma injections improve pain and disability in patients with meniscus tears of the knee. © 2021, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. We also speculated whether frozen shoulder seen in postthoracotomy and postcardiac surgery patients might be CRPS type I in fact.Article Effect of Number of Pregnancies on Bone Mineral Density(Sage Publications Ltd, 2010) Hiz, O.; Ediz, L.; Tekeoglu, I.This study investigated the effect of the number of pregnancies on bone mineral density (BMD) in 320 post-menopausal women aged between 49 and 64 years. Cases were selected from people with similar lifestyles and stratified into five groups according to the number of pregnancies. Each group was divided into two subgroups according to the duration of the menopause (3 - 5 years versus 6 - 10 years). Lumbar (L2 - L4) and femoral neck BMD were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and T-score values were used in the statistical evaluation. No significant difference was found between the number of pregnancies and BMD within each group based on the same menopause duration, but a significant correlation was found in most groups based on menopause duration: T-scores decreased as menopause duration increased. Changes in BMD are likely to be related to menopause duration, rather than the number of pregnancies.Conference Object The Effect of Pde5 Inhibitors on Bone and Oxidative Damage in Ovariectomy-Induced Osteoporosis(Wiley-blackwell, 2016) Alp, H. R.Article Effect of Weekly Alendronate on Knee Symptoms in Patients With Osteoporosis and Knee Osteoarthritis Coexistence(2010) Ediz, L.; Hiz, Ö.; Toprak, M.; Tekeoǧlu, I.Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of alendronate 70 mg weekly on knee symptoms in elderly women with osteoporosis and knee OA coexistence. Material and Methods: Elderly women who diagnosed as osteoporosis between 60-75 years old, underwent radiography of the knee if they reported symptoms of knee OA. Radiographs were read for Kellgren and Lawrence grade and individual features of OA. Osteoporotic patients with Knee OA treated with 70 mg alendronate once weekly for one year. Knee symptoms were assessed by interview before the treatment and 6 and 12 months after the treatment, and knee pain severity was evaluated using the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), Lequense index, VAS at rest and at movement. Results: Alendronate 70 mg once weekly use was associated with less severity of knee pain as assessed by WOMAC scores, Lequense index, VAS at rest and at movement at 6th and 12th month assessments. Conclusion: This current study has shown that Alendronate 70 mg once weekly use was associated with less severity of knee symptoms in elderly women with osteoporosis and knee OA coexistence. Additional long-term randomised, placebo controlled clinical trials are needed to confirm this effect of weekly Alendronate.Article The Efficacies of Medicinal Leech Therapy and Platelet Rich Plasma Injection Added To Muscle Stretching Exercises in the Treatment of Myofascial Pain Syndrome(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2021) Ediz, L.; Çağaç, A.; Delen, V.Myofascial pain syndrome is among the most common cause of physical disability and severe chronic muscle pain and affect millions of people worldwide. So far muscle stretching exercises and some therapeutic interventions have been recommended with various effects. Sixty-six patients with myofascial pain syndrome due to trigger points in trapezius muscle were included in this study. Patients were divided randomly into 2 groups of 33 patients: group 1; medicinal leech therapy group, group 2; platelet rich plasma injection group. To the first group, 4 medicinal leech were applied to the trigger points 2 times in a 4 week interval . To the second group, a total of 2 ml platelet rich plasma was administered to each trigger point 2 times in a 4 week interval. All patients had also taught and given trapezius muscle stretching exercises for ten minutes as a daily diary schedule for 12 weeks. At the end of the study there was a significant decrease in visual analogue scale scores in both groups, while a significant increase in pain threshold values in medicinal leech therapy group (p<0.05). Significant differences were found between groups in short form-36 pain, general health and vitality scores in favor of leech therapy group (p <0.05). Although both methods were found effective in the treatment of myofascial pain syndrome, the clinical efficacy of medicinal leech therapy was greater than platelet rich plasma. Leech therapy seems to be an eff ective and reliable treatment option when added to muscle stretching exercises in myofascial pain syndrome. © 2021, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. Material and Methods: Seventy-six Behcet's Syndrome (BS) patients who were diagnosed with at least one year and the same number of healthy control subjects with similar demographic features were included in the study. Multidimension Assessment of Fatigue (MAF) used for evaluation of fatigue in both groups. In addition, hospital depression and anxiety scale and short form 36 were filled by the patients. Results: A negative correlation between level of education and the degree and severity of fatigue was found, while there was a positive correlation between disease duration and degree and severity of fatigue, and the global score. Threre was correlation between clinical signs of Behcet's disease and some sub-groups of the MAF, however the global score was not significantly correlated. Statistically significant high scores of MAF values were found in patients with BS in comparison with the control group. There was a positive correlation between anxiety, depression and fatigue values in patients with BS. Negative correlation determined between all parameters of daily living quality (SF-36) and fatigue values of the patients. Conclusion: Fatigue is common in BS and closely associated with psychological status and affects negatively activities of daily living. Therefore, it should be taken into account in the evaluation of BS patients. Methods: Measured the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), protein carbonyl (PC), glutathione (GSH) and antioxidant vitamins (A,C and E) as well as the activities of catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in serum and whole blood of FMF patients in FMF-AP and FMF-AFP. Results: Levels of MDA and PC were found significantly higher (p <0.05) both in serum and whole blood of FMF-AP group compared with other groups. The CAT and GSH-Px activities in FMF-AP group were found markedly lower (p <0.05) comparing to HC group. However, there were no statistically significant differences between the groups in terms of antioxidant vitamin levels. Conclusions: Our study demonstrated increased oxidative stress in patients with FMF during AP. Investigations are needed to establish the effect of antioxidant supplementation on FMF attack frequency and severity. We also suggest that these increased MDA and PC levels and decreased antioxidants may be used as supportive markers to differentiate AP from AFP. These conclusions need to be validated in further multicenter studies with high number of FMF patients.Article The Relationship Between Shoulder Impingement Syndrome and Sleep Quality(verduci Publisher, 2013) Tekeoglu, I.; Ediz, L.; Hiz, O.; Toprak, M.; Yazmalar, L.; Karaaslan, G.BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine potential relationship between subjective sleep quality and degree of pain in patients with shoulder impingement syndrome (SIS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fourty patients with shoulder impingement syndrome were evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Shoulder Disability Questionnaire (SDQ). Forty three of age and sex matched healthy subjects were included in the control group. RESULTS: There was a significant difference between the patient and control groups in terms of all PSQI global scores and subdivisions (p < 0.01). The pain scores assessed by SDQ were positively correlated with the scores for subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, habitual sleep efficiency, and sleep disturbance (r = 0.49/p < 0.01, r = 0.44/p < 0.01, r = 0.36/p < 0.05, r = 0.40/p < 0.05, and r = 0.37/p < 0.05 respectively). The comparison of total SDQ pain and global PSQI scores also revealed a significant correlation (r = 0.54/p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Subjective sleep disturbance connected to shoulder pain was found obviously in patients with SIS. For this reason, patients with shoulder pain due to SIS may benefit from the pain killers and cognitive-behavioral interventions that specifically target sleep disturbances. Further studies which contain polysomnographic assessments, as well as determine psychologic status are still needed to put forth sleep quality in patients with SIS.Article Restless Legs Syndrome in Behcet's Disease(Field House Publishing Llp, 2011) Ediz, L.; Hiz, O.; Toprak, M.; Ceylan, M. F.; Yazmalar, L.; Gulcu, E.The prevalence of restless legs syndrome (RLS) and its association with the clinical features of Behcet's disease (BD) has not previously been elucidated. The inflammatory character, central nervous system involvement and neuropathies of BD led to this investigation of RLS risk in BD patients. A total of 116 BD patients and 104 healthy control subjects were included; seven BD patients were excluded because of concurrent diseases, pregnancy or alcohol misuse that might cause RLS symptoms, and the remaining 109 BD patients were included in the analysis. The prevalence of RLS was significantly higher in patients with BD (32/109; 29.4%) than in controls (5/104; 4.8%). No significant differences were found between BD patients with and without RLS with regard to the clinical features of BD. RLS severity positively correlated with age in BD patients. In conclusion, BD-related RLS should be considered in symptomatic RLS secondary to rheumatological disorders and BD patients should be examined for RLS. Further studies are needed to clarify the pathogenetic mechanisms underlying BD-related RLS.Article Rheumatoid Arthritis-Like Hand Deformities in a Case With Osteogenesis Imperfecta: a Case Report(2010) Hiz, Ö.; Ediz, L.; Ceylan, M.F.; Özkan, Y.; Tekeoǧlu, I.Osteogenesis imperfecta is a disease that involves mesodermal tissues and characterized by decreased bone mass and increased bone fragility. Bone fractures developed due to ligamentous laxity, low energy trauma and joint deformities and contractures due to dislocations may be seen during the disease process. For that reason, it could be confused especially with rheumatoid arthritis. In this article we presented a case with osteogenesis imperfecta that misdiagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis because of joint deformities and common joint pain.Article Seasonal Disease Activity and Serum Vitamin D Levels in Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis and Osteoarthritis(Makerere Univ, Fac Med, 2013) Yazmalar, L.; Ediz, L.; Alpayci, M.; Hiz, O.; Toprak, M.; Tekeoglu, IBackground: Vitamin D is a steroid hormone that plays essential roles in calcium and phosphorus metabolism, bone formation and mineralization homeostasis, also has a role in the maintenance of immune-homeostasis. Objective: We aimed to investigate seasonal serum vitamin D levels and seasonal disease activity in patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, and Osteoarthritis. Methods: Seventy-one Rheumatoid Arthritis patients, 72 Ankylosing Spondylitis patients, 74 knee Osteoarthritis patients and 70 healthy controls were recruited for the study. Bi-seasonal measurements of serum 25(OH)D vitamin were checked in either in July or August or September for summertime and either in December or January or February for wintertime. Disease activity were evaluated by Disease Activity Score-28, Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index, and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index in groups of Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, and Osteoarthritis respectively. Results: We did not find any correlation between serum 25(OH)D levels and Disease Activity Score-28, Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index, and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index scores in winter and summer. The difference of Disease Activity Score-28 and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index scores between winter and summer seasons were not significant in Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis patients (p>0.05). The mean Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index score was significantly higher in winter than in summer (p<0.05). Consequently we did not find any correlation between variations of seasonal serum 25(OH)D and the disease activity in the patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, and Osteoarthritis. Conclusion: These results suggest that vitamin D does not have an important role in the seasonal disease activity of these diseases and that seasonal changes in disease activity may play an important role in evaluating Ankylosing Spondylitis patients rather than Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis patients and should be taken into account when examining these patients. These conclusions need to be validated in multicenter studies with high number of patients.Article The Therapeutic Efficacy of Dexpanthenol on Sciatic Nerve Injury in a Rat Model(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2020) Korkmaz, M.F.; Parlakpinar, H.; Erdem, M.N.; Ceylan, M.F.; Ediz, L.; Samdanci, E.; Kekilli, E.Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate histopathological, functional and bone densitometry examinations of the beneficial effects of dexpanthenol (DEX) on nerve regeneration in a rat model of peripheral nerve crush injury. Methods: Thirty adult Sprague-Dawley rats were divided equally into three groups. A crush injury was simulated in all rats by clamping the right sciatic nerve for one minute. In group 1, one day before the surgical procedure, 500 mg/kg DEX administered via intraperitoneally (ip) was initiated and continued three times in a week during the experiment period as 28 days. In group 2, rats received a dose of 10 mg/kg DEX to investigate possible effects of DEX alone. Group 3 served as the control (sciatic nerve injury) and was not given any drugs. Results: Performance was significantly lower in group 3 compared to the drug treatment groups during the rotarod test (30 rpm and 40 rpm) (p < 0.05). After a while, the rats which were able to remain on the rod was significantly lower in group 3 during the acceleration test (p < 0.05). Hot plate latency test results in group 3 were significantly lower when compared to the other groups (p < 0.05). Conclusion: DEX appears to be useful as a supportive clinical agent for the treatment of pain and nerve damage. © 2020 The Neurosurgical Foundation.Article Undetected Piece of Wood Causing Osteomyelitis of the Metacarpal Bone: a Case Report(2013) Ceylan, M.F.; Guner, S.; Ediz, L.; Turkozu, T.; Isik, D.The patients with soft tissue injuries by foreign bodies are encountered frequently by the emergency physicians. In the emergency services, the advanced radiological imaging techniques should be requested in the patients who have a history of foreign body injury, if it was not detected by plain radiographs. Though the plain radiography is very useful for detection of metal foreign bodies, ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging and the computed tomography are superior for the detection of wood, glass and plastic foreign bodies. The foreign bodies that were not removed with the surgery can cause allergic, inflammatory or infectious process. Old foreign body injuries should be investigated in the patients with non-healing infection, or osteomyelitis history. The surgical exploration should not be avoided for diagnostic aim. In this case, we are presenting a pediatric patient developed metacarpal bone osteomyelitis due to foreign body which was diagnosed lately.
