Article Anatomical and Stereological Examination of Infected Lung Area Volumes in Ct Images of Covid-19 Positive Patients by Age and Gender(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2023) Koyun, N.; Akyol, V.; Elasan, S.; Göya, C.; Gizli, G.SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), a previously unidentified type of coronavirus in humans, causes respiratory tract infection. The infection is transmitted by droplets and leads to several serious diseases characterized by acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). We aimed to examine the changes in the volumes of lung regions infected with COVID-19, a new and highly pathogenic strain, according to age and gender. After obtaining ethical permission, 6700 patients who applied with positive COVID-19 test were selected between 01/03/2020 and 01/03/2021. Patients with asthma, bronchiectasis, obstructive pulmonary disease, pleurisy, allergic lung disease, lung tumor, and smokers were excluded from the study. After the excluded patients, computed tomography images of a total of 407 COVID-19-positive patients, 188 women, and 219 men, were obtained retrospectively. From the images taken, 2 to 10-decade groups of male and female patients between the ages of 10 and 100 were formed for the study. Images were skipped at certain intervals from the lung CT images for each patient in the groups. By applying stereological methods to the images, the total volume of the lung and the volumes of the infected lung regions were calculated. In the analysis of the infected COVID-19 lung volume/total lung volume (%) ratio by gender and decades, there was a statistically significant difference according to gender in the 2nd, 6th, and 9th decades [(p=0.002), (p=0.001) and (p=0.032)] was observed. In the comparison of the infected COVID-19 lung volume/total lung volume ratio by decades, a statistically significant difference was observed in both genders (p=0.001). Further studies and medical research are needed to better understand age-and sex-specific differences for effective intervention. © 2023, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. N.; Tunc, S. K.; Yuksek, M. N.; Elasan, S.Background: There are limited number of studies about the lasers used for the treatment of pericoronitis infection. Aim: To compare the Er, Cr:YSGG laser and diode laser applications clinically in the treatment of pericoronitis infection. Patients and Methods: Sixty patients with pericoronitis infection were divided into three groups using block randomization: Er, Cr: YSGG + antibiotic group, n = 20 (mean age: 24.20 +/- 6.13; 14 females, 6 males); diode group + antibiotic, n = 20 (mean age: 23.45 +/- 2.96; 14 females, 6 males); and antibiotic, n = 20 ( mean age: 22.45 +/- 3.02; 11 females, 9 males). In addition, laser application was performed for patients in the Er, Cr:YSGG and diode laser groups on the 1(st) and 2(nd) days until the extraction day. Tooth extractions were performed on the 3(rd) day for all patients. Patients' pain (with visual analog scale [VAS]), lymphadenopathy, and local edema were clinically evaluated in the first 3 days and on the 7(th) day of treatment. Results: Pain score on the 2(nd) day of treatment was determined to be significantly lower in the Er, Cr:YSGG + antibiotic laser group as compared with the other two groups (P = 0.019). Although regression of lymphadenopathy on the 3rd day was highest (P = 0.025) in the Er, Cr:YSGG group, there was no significant difference between the groups regarding local edema. Conclusion: Er, Cr: YSGG laser improved the healing process in the treatment of pericoronitis and made an important contribution to the treatment.Article Evaluation of Clinical and Laboratory Findings in Patients Diagnosed With Covid-19(Verduci International, 2023) Gürbüz, E.; Çelik, M.; Türkoğlu, S.; Elasan, S.; Yürektürk, Ş.; Sünnetçioğlu, M.Objective: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease that can lead to condi-tions ranging from mild upper respiratory tract infection to severe clinical manifestations, such as respiratory and multiorgan failure. Thus, this study was aimed at evaluating the clinical and laboratory findings of the patients followed up for COVID-19 in our hospital. Patients and Methods: A total of 497 patients who were older than 18 years of age and had been diagnosed with COVID-19 were included in this study. Of the 497 patients diagnosed with COV-ID-19, 57.2% were male and 42.8% were female, and the mean age was 51.59±19.95 years. While the case-death rate was 9.2%, it was 36.8% in the intensive care unit. While lung involvement was detected in 72.2% of the patients, this rate was higher in the patients followed up in the ICU (98.8%). Results: In the laboratory tests, the leukocytosis, lymphopenia, thrombocytopenia, C-reactive pro-tein, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, creatinine, cre-atine kinase, ferritin, procalcitonin, and D-dimer levels were higher in the deceased patients than in the surviving patients and were associated with mortality. The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio was higher in the deceased patients when compared to the other patient groups, and it was also associated with increased mortality. Hypertension (8.6%) and diabetes mellitus (11.2%) were the most common underlying diseases in all of the patient groups. Conclusions: It was observed that the case-death rate was significantly higher in the ICU and mortality increased with advanced age. Moreover, comorbid factors were higher in patients who were followed up in the ICU and died. In the laboratory examinations, pathological findings were encoun-tered at a higher rate, especially in the patients who died. © 2023, Verduci International. It is not known whether the measures taken to control the pandemic in Türkiye affect the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the prevalance of intestinal parasites. In the study, the parasitological data of 18,204 patients who applied to Dursun Odabaş Medical Center between June 2018 and December 2021 and whose stool samples were sent to the parasitology laboratory were evaluated retrospectively. Intestinal parasites were detected in 1214(9.89%) of 12270 patients in the pre-COVID-19 period and in 866 (14.59%) of 5934 patients during the COVID-19 period. In the statistical evaluation, it was observed that there was a significant difference between the positivity rate in the pre-COVID-19 period and the positivity rate in the COVID-19 period. On species basis, there was a decrease in the rates of pathogenic parasites G. intestinalis and E. histolytica, but an increase in the rate of B. hominis, which is discussed to be pathogenic. It has been concluded that the decrease in the rate of pathogenic parasites transmitted by fecal-oral route is since the general hygiene rules and the decrease in human-to-human contact are effective in the COVID-19 period. © 2023, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. It may be hard to diagnose CO poisoning if it is not suspected because the clinical features are non-specific. We wanted to investigate the effects of end-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2) measurement in expirium on the diagnosis and follow-up of CO poisoning. After the patients were diagnosed as having CO poisoning by taking arterial blood gas from pat ients who were suspected of having CO poisoning, ETCO₂ was measured using the sidestream method. The data were analyzed using the SPSS (IBM SPSS for Windows, ver.23) statistical package program. One hundred fourty six146 patients, 106 with CO poisoning and 40 control cases, were included in the study. After the demographic data were evaluated, the relationship between ETCO2 and carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) was analyzed. No statistically significant difference was found. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to look for a relationship between ETCO2 and COHb. More studies are required to investigate the relationship between ETCO2 and COHb. The study was conducted in a single centre with a few patients. Only the sidestream method was used in the measurement of ETCO2. The parameters affecting respiratory physiology could not be excluded completely. © 2022, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. This study aims, for the first time in the scientific literature, to compare sleep and dysfunction between clinical conditions that occu r at the two levels where the ulnar nerve is most commonly entrapped (elbow/cubital tunnel and wrist/Guyon’s canal). This study aims, for the first time in the scientific literature, to compare sleep and dysfunction between clinical condition s that occur at the two levels where the ulnar nerve is most commonly entrapped (elbow/cubital tunnel and wrist/Guyon’s canal). 20 (twenty) patients diagnosed with 'Ulnar entrapment neuropathy' by clinical evaluation and EMG (Electromyelography) were included in the study. The values of motor and sensory conductions were recorded according to the entrapment levels in EMG. The Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) index was used to evaluate upper extremity function, and the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to determine sleep disorders. The average DASH score of patients with wrist entrapment (Guyon's canal) was found to be worse than the DASH score average of patients with cubital tunnel entrapment. However, this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.210). The mean PSQI score of patients with entrapment in the wrist (Guyon 's canal) was found to be higher than the mean PSQI score of patients with cubital tunnel entrapment. However, this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.787). Symptom severity in ulnar entrapment neuropathy syndrome negatively affects functi onal status and sleep quality. In the treatment of ulnar entrapment neuropathy, treatments aimed at restoring not only entrapment symptoms but also upper extremity function and sleep quality should be considered. © 2024, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. Article Surgical Evaluation of the Early Extraction of Deciduous Teeth by Faculty of Dentistry Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic Throughout a Year: Retrospective Study(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2018) Eroğlu, C.N.; Boylu, Ö.F.; Kurt, M.; Elasan, S.Early deciduous tooth extraction is a common public health problem that causes long-term economic and time-related loss. Early deciduous tooth extraction is common due to lack of a pedodontist in the dentistry faculty and parental awareness. For this reason, this retrospective study was planned to determine the number of early extractions of all the deciduous teeth in the last year and to raise awareness for child patients in terms of surgery. Between January 2017 and December 2017, data-processing documents of child patients between the ages of 4-12 whose deciduous teeth were extracted were examined. A classification was made based on age group, lower-upper jaw, gender, early extraction times, and the physiological eruption times of the deciduous teeth, the used anesthesia techniques and the individual number of extractions were evaluated. It was identified that approximately half of all extractions were early, and it was observed in early extractions that the incisor and canine teeth extraction in girls and the 1st deciduous molar teeth extraction in boys exhibited statistically significant differences. The examinations of pediatric specialists and treatment protocols in child patients, access to pedodontists easier, and raising parental awareness can seriously impact the prevalence of early extractions in oral and maxillofacial surgery clinics. A single extraction in a single session would be more comfortable for both the child and the dentist. © 2018, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. All rights reserved.
