Article Cases of Cutaneous Anthrax in Eastern Turkey: the Reports of Three Cases(Ondokuz Mayis Universitesi, 2015) Karadaş, S.; Gönüllü, H.; Ceylan, M.R.; Esmer, F.; Ebinç, S.Anthrax is an acute disease caused by the bacterium Ba cillus anthracis. This bacteria can form dormant endospores. When spores are inhaled, ingested, or come into contact with a skin lesion on a host, they may become reactivated multiply and rapidly. B. anthracis bacterial spores are soil-borne. Because of their long lifespan, spores are present globally and remain at the burial sites of animals killed by anthrax for many decades. Diseased animals can spread anthrax to humans, either by direct contact or by consumption of a diseased animal's flesh. The most frequent clinical type of anthrax is cutaneous anthrax. It presents as a boil-like skin lesion that eventually forms an ulcer with a black center (eschar). Cutaneous anthrax form often within the site of spore penetration between two and five days after exposure. Until the 20th century, anthrax infections killed thousands of animals and people worldwide each year. Animal vaccination programs and antibiotic therapy were decreased the number of deaths. But, anthrax is still a problem in less developed countries. It has been reported that the incidence of disease has decreased in Turkey. However, we present here in three cases of cutaneous anthrax admitted to the emergency department of our hospital within a week. © 2015 OMU.Article Delayed Diagnosis of Selective Immunoglobulin Deficiency: a Case Report(Ondokuz Mayis Universitesi, 2016) Kars, V.; Celepkolu, T.; Yilmaz, A.; Esmer, F.; Karadas, S.Selective immunoglobulin A deficiency (SIgAD) is the most common of all primary immunodeficiency diseases; however, the pathogenesis has not been fully understood. Although most people with SIgAD are asymptomatic, some may present with recurrent infections; such as respiratory disorders, gastrointestinal tracts disorders, and allergic disorders. Herein, we report a case with SIgAD who presented with the complaints of pruritus, dental caries and chronic sinopulmonary infections. © 2016 OMU.Article Investigation of Irisin Level in Brucella Patients(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2021) Algul, S.; Senol, F.F.; Ugras, S.; Esmer, F.; Kara, M.; Ekici, P.; Ozcelik, O.This study aimed to determine whether the changes in the metabolism of Brucella patients affect the irisin hormone. Also, it is aimed to investigate the relationships between other laboratory findings used in the diagnosis of brucellosis patients and the irisin hormone. 160 persons (80 brucellosis, 80 controls) were included in this study. Blood was drawn from the people participating in the study following their overnight fast. Irisin level was measured by ELISA method, CRP and sedimentation levels were measured using autoanalysers and commercial kits. It was determined that the irisin level of Brucella patients was statistically significantly higher than the control group (p <0.05). It was determined that there is a negative correlation between irisin level and CRP and sedimentation level in Brucella patients. In Brucella patients, the higher irisin level than the control group showed a negative correlation with CRP and sedimentation levels, which are infection diagnosis criteria; It suggests that the level of irisin can be considered as a supportive diagnostic marker in these patients. Further studies are needed to evaluate irisin hormone as a supportive diagnostic criterion. © 2021, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. All rights reserved.
