Article Aeromonas Hydrophila Associated With Ovine Abortion(Elsevier Science Bv, 2006) Ilhan, Z; Gülhan, T; Aksakal, AA sheep farm housing 124 animals, of which 68 were ewes having history of abortion and placenta retention, were informed. In total, 19 vaginal swabs taken from aborted ewes, 3 fetuses, 4 placentas, and I drinking water sample were investigated microbiologically. A total of 60 blood samples (27 from aborted ewes, 18 from pregnant ewes and 15 from healthy neonate ewes) were investigated serologically. Eighteen Aeromonas hydrophila strains were isolated: 13 from vaginal swabs, 3 from fetuses, I from placenta and I from drinking water. Protein profiles of A. hydrophila strains were determined by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Of the 27 aborted ewes sera, 7 sera were found to be positive in rapid agglutination test (RAT) with prepared RAT antigen from A. hydrophila. A. hydrophila strains were determined to be resistant to penicillin G, erythromycin and gentamicin. The most effective antibiotics were amoxycillin and enrofloxacin. A. hydrophila is likely to interfere with the normal development of the fetus, especially if pregnancy and other stressing factors occur during gestation. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.Article The Efficacy of Cloxacillin and Micanfin in Multifactorial Conjunctivitis Treatment in Van Cats(M H Schaper Gmbh Co Kg, 2003) Akkan, HA; Ilhan, Z; Karaca, M; Tütüncü, M; Gençcelep, M; Gülhan, TThis study was performed on 121 Van Cats at the Van Cat Research Center of the Yucuncu YiI University. Out, of 121 cats 20 showed an uni- or bilateral conjunctivitis. The animals were of both sex aging between 1-9 years. The following symptoms were observed in 20 cats with conjunctivitis: serous or seromucous lacrimation, hyperemia and oedema in the conjunctiva and desquamation around their eyes. Hair samples together with hair follicules were taken from comissura medialis and used for bacteriologial and fungal culture. After cultivation, Staphylococcus spp. in 19 cats, Streptococcus spp. in 7 cats and Microsporum spp. in 2 cats were isolated. All the bacteria detected were sensitivite to cloxacillin and to some other antibiotics according to the antibiogram. Cloxacillin (Optidox opht. pom., Sanovel) was applied to both eyes of the all 20 cats. After drug application, 18 cats out of 20 (90%) showed recovery signs starting from 24 hours to 72 hours. However, clinical signs in two cats (10 %) had not disappeared at all. 1.72 hours after drug application, hair samples were taken again for bacteriological analysis. With the exception of these two samples collected from the cats with no clinical improvement, the other 18 samples did not show any bacterial growth. The 2 cats recovered after a second cloxacillin application. The conjunctivitis symptoms disappeared and bacteriological tests made 144 hours after the treatment were negative. After bacteriological elimination, the vaccine Micanfin (Micanfin flk. BioVeta) against Microsporum canis was injected intra-muscularly twice at 14 days intervals. Allergic reactions were not observed on the cats after vaccination. Fungal agents couldn't also be detected 25 and 40 days after vaccination. As a result; cloxacillin was an effective antibiotic in the conjunctivitis caused by Staphylococcus spp., and Streptococcus spp. and Micanfin can safely be used in Van cats without any side effect.Article Isolation of Motile Aeromonads From Turkish Van Cats(indian veterinary Journal, 2002) Boynukara, B; Gülhan, T; Boynukara, ZArticle Prevalence of Rotavirus, Escherichia Coli K99 and O157:h7 in Healthy Dairy Cattle Herds in Van, Turkey(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2001) Çabalar, M; Boynukara, B; Gülhan, T; Ekin, IHA survey was conducted to determine the prevalence of rotavirus, Escherichia coli K99 and O157:H7 in healthy dairy cattle herds in Van and environs. Turkey. Some of the cattle herds had a history of recurrent neonatal diarrhoea for previous years, and even while sampling was being done, some newborn calves were diarrhoeic. Three hundred and twelve faecal specimens from dairy cattle farms free of clinically apparent diarrhoea were tested both for the presence of rotaviruses by PAGE silver staining and for Escherichia coli K99 and O157:H7 by latex agglutination using specific antisera after the growth of each colony. The enteropathogenic characteristic of K99 and O157:H7 isolates was determined by rabbit ileal loop test. No rotavirus was detected from clinically normal cows, heifers or calves. Only 1 of 9 diarrhoeic calves was found to be positive for rotavirus. Out of the 235 E, coli isolates from non-diarrhoeic animals, 28 were positive for K99 and 4 for O157:H7. While 14 of 28 K99 isolates were found to be positive for enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC), 2 of 4 O157:H7 isolates were also positive for EPEC. An in vitro antibiotic sensitivity test of K99 and O157:H7 isolates indicated that the most sensitive antibiotics were enrofloxacin and danofloxacin.
