Article Characteristics of Patients With Nocturnal Dissociative Disorders(2001) Aǧargün, M.Y.; Kara, H.; Özer, O.A.; Semiz, U.; Selvi, Y.; Kiran, U.; Tombul, T.Frequency of nocturnal dissociative episodes (NDE) in patients with dissociative disorders (DD) was determined and clinical characteristics of patients with nocturnal dissociative disorders was compared with those DD only. Extensive overnight polysomnographic monitoring with nocturnal video-polysomnography was performed in 8 patients with NDE and 21 patients with DD only. We found a 27.5% prevalence of NDE in patients with DD. A clear transition from one personality to another was observed during sleep in 2 (about 7%) patients. Hallucinations, self-mutilating behaviors during sleep, and violent behavior during sleep were more common in the patients with NDE. Sleep may facilitate the transition from one personality to the other one. Patients with DD may use dissociation as a defense mechanism during sleep.Article Distribution and Dna Barcoding of Anomalini Beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae) in Wheat Fields of Van, Türkiye(Centenary University, 2024) Özgökçe, M.S.; Göksugüzel, G.; Kara, H.; Rişvanli, M.R.; Doğaç, M.Anomalini beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae) constitute an important group of pests causing significant crop losses in wheat cultivation areas worldwide, including Türkiye. The aim of this study was to comprehensively evaluate the phylogeny, diversity, abundance, and distribution of Anomalini beetles in wheat fields of Van province, Türkiye. Surveys were conducted between April and August 2021, involving monthly sample collection at predetermined locations within six districts: Başkale, Çaldıran, Erciş, Gevaş, İpekyolu, and Tuşba. A Standard sweepnet with a diameter of 35 cm was used to collect samplings. In molecular studies, the mitochondrial COI gene region has been amplified and sequenced using universal primers. Anomalini beetles were detected in all sampling areas except Çatak district. Seven species were identified: Anisoplia austriaca, A. signata, A. lata, Brancoplia leucaspis, Blitopertha nigripennis, Chaetopteroplia segetum, and an unidentified Anisoplia sp. Chaetopteroplia segetum emerged as the most prevalent and abundant species across all districts. Notably, all identified Anomalini species represent the first records for Van province and its environs. While Anomalini beetles were present in the region, their population densities were not considered high enough to cause economic damage. © 2024, Centenary University. It attacks the leaves, shoots and fruits of the pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata) plant, which is among its hosts, causing significant crop losses. In this study, development, survival and fecundity data of P.citri were obtained on the leaves of the pumpkin plant were in the climatic room which was adjusted to 28 ± 1 °C temperature, 60 ± 5% relative humidity and 16: 8 light: dark conditions. The raw data obtained were tested according to the age-stage twosex life table and the life table parameters were calculated using the Twosex MSChart package program. Accordingly, they were calculated as follows; the intrinsic rate of increase (r) = 0.0802 d-1, the finite rate of increase (λ) = 1.0836 d-1, the net reproductive rate (R0) = 29.231 eggs, and the mean generation time (T) = 42.10 days. In addition, the population size of the pest was estimated using the Timing MSChart program. According to this, when 10 P. citri eggs were taken as the initial population, it was estimated that the population that could occur at the end of 3 months would be 4 137 individuals in total. © 2021, Centenary University. This study aimed to investigate the spatial distribution and population density of wheat stem sawfly in Eastern Türkiye and to evaluate the damage caused by this pest on wheat yield and quality. A total of 120 wheat fields were surveyed in six provinces of Eastern Türkiye during the 2018 growing season. The results showed that the population density of wheat stem sawflies varied significantly among the surveyed fields, with an average infestation rate of 37.4%. The highest infestation rate was recorded in the province of Kilis (62.5%) and Diyarbakır (61.9%), while the lowest was in the province of Ağrı (8.3%). The study also identified some factors that affect the population density of wheat stem sawflies, including host plants (mainly wheat, barley, and rye), altitude, temperature, and geographical structure such as mountains and forests. These findings provide valuable information for developing effective management strategies to control wheat stem sawfly populations and minimize the damage caused by this pest in Eastern Türkiye, especially Southeastern Anatolia Region. © 2023, Centenary University. Method: Thirteen patients whose sleep panic attacks represented their primary complaint at the time of admission were given imipramine for an 8-week trial. Results: 150 mg/day imipramine treatment reduced the frequency and the severity of sleep panic attacks in patients. Conclusions: These findings suggest that imipramine is useful in the treatment of this subgroup patients of panic disorder.Article Molecular Phylogeny and Population Structure of Eurygaster Integriceps (Hemiptera: Scutelleridae) in the Southeastern Anatolia Region of Türkiye(TUBITAK, 2025) Özgökçe, M.S.; Doğaç, M.; Kara, H.The aim of this study was to determine the identity and distribution of the sunn pest Eurygaster spp. and to quantify the population density in wheat fields across Southeastern Anatolia, Türkiye. A total of 309 samples were collected from 76 fields in 54 districts across all provinces within the study region, where wheat production is intensive. A combination of morphological and molecular techniques was employed to identify the collected specimens. Morphological identification was based on male genitalia, and PCR amplification of the COI mitochondrial gene region was used for DNA barcoding. Both morphological and molecular analyses confirmed that all collected samples belonged to the species Eurygaster integriceps, revealing five distinct morphotypes and 17 haplotypes. The results indicate that the sunn pest is widespread across all provinces in the Southeastern Anatolia region. Among these provinces, Gaziantep exhibited the highest pest density, whereas Siirt had the lowest. Morphologically, 46.27% of the samples exhibited a distinctive contrast pattern on the scutellum—a feature previously associated with increased pesticide resistance. Combined morphological and molecular analyses confirmed the presence of E. integriceps in all sampled wheat fields, revealing that it is widely distributed in Southeastern Anatolia and has varying population densities among provinces. The combined use of morphological and molecular identification techniques provided a comprehensive understanding of E. integriceps populations. Morphological analysis enabled the identification of distinct morphotypes, while molecular analysis confirmed species identity and revealed genetic diversity within the population, providing essential baseline information for accurate identification and the development of effective pest management strategies. © TÜBİTAK.Article Nightmares Associated With the Onset of Mania: Three Case Reports(2003) Agargun, M.Y.; Kara, H.; Inci, R.We reported three cases who had dream-induced manic episodes and discussed mood-regulatory function of dreaming. A dysregulation in neural circuits and monoaminergic systems in brain may precede mood shift during REM sleep dreaming and result in manic episode.Article P-35 the Efficacy of Cisapride in Managing Nausea Produced by Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors: a Placebo Controlled Study(Elsevier B.V., 1996) Kara, H.; Agargün, M.Y.; Algün, E.; Türkdoan, M.K.; Tuncer, I.Article Recurrent Sleep Panic, Insomnia, and Suicidal Behavior in Patients With Panic Disorder(W.B. Saunders, 1998) Aǧargün, M.Y.; Kara, H.The purpose of this study was to examine the association between recurrent sleep, panic, and suicidal behavior in panic disorder. We compared the recurrent sleep panickers (N = 33) with other panickers (N = 34). The Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (SADS) suicide subscale was used to rate the severity of active suicidality. We found that recurrent sleep panickers also had a higher percentage of insomnia and comorbid major depression than the others. A multivariate analysis demonstrated an association between recurrent sleep panic and suicidal tendencies in patients with panic disorder. Although recurrent sleep panic alone is not an independent risk factor for suicidal behavior, it may modify the severity of illness in patients with panic disorder.Article Repetitive and Frightening Dreams and Suicidal Behavior in Patients With Major Depression(W.B. Saunders, 1998) Aǧargün, M.Y.; Çilli, A.S.; Kara, H.; Tarhan, N.; Kincir, F.; Öz, H.The purpose of the present study was to examine the association between repetitive and frightening dreams and suicidal tendency in patients with major depression. Depressed patients who reported frequent nightmare (N = 29) and depressed patients who reported dreaming but never nightmares (N = 34) were evaluated using the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (SADS) suicide subscale to rate the severity of active suicidality. The patients with frequent nightmares, particularly women, had higher mean SADS suicide subscale scores and were more likely to be classified as suicidal than the others. The findings demonstrate that frequent nightmares are associated with suicidal tendency in patients with major depression. Theoretical and clinical implications for the function of dreaming are discussed.Article Serum Paraoxonase Activity and Oxidative Stress Levels in Patients With Cutaneous Anthrax(Sage Publications Ltd, 2017) Karadas, S.; Aslan, M.; Ceylan, M. R.; Sunnetcioglu, M.; Bozan, N.; Kara, H.; Demir, H.Introduction: Anthrax is a bacterial disease caused by the aerobic sporeforming bacterium Bacillus anthracis. It has been suggested that oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathogenesis of B. anthracis. The aim of this study was to investigate serum paraoxonase 1 (PON1) activity, catalase activity, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels in patients with cutaneous anthrax. Materials and methods: Fifteen patients with cutaneous anthrax and 15 healthy controls were enrolled in this study. The serum MDA levels, SOD levels, paraoxonase, arylesterase, and catalase activities were measured using a spectrophotometer. Results: The serum SOD levels, paraoxonase, arylesterase, and catalase activities were significantly lower in patients with cutaneous anthrax than in controls (for all, p < 0.001), whereas MDA levels were significantly higher (p < 0.001). No significant correlation was found between serum paraoxonase activity, arylesterase activity, SOD levels, and MDA levels (all, p > 0.05) in patients with cutaneous anthrax. Conclusions: The current study was the first to show decreased antioxidant levels and increased oxidant levels in patients with cutaneous anthrax. Therefore, decreased PON1 activity may play a role in the pathogenesis of cutaneous anthrax.Article Sleep Disturbances and Suicidal Behavior in Patients With Major Depression(Physicians Postgraduate Press Inc., 1997) Aǧargün, M.Y.; Kara, H.; Solmaz, M.Background: The purpose of this study was to examine the association between sleep disturbances and suicidal behavior in patients with major depression (N = 113). Method: The sleep symptomatology of each patient was ascertained from the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (SADS) questions concerning sleep were retrospectively classified as having hypersomnia (N = 20), insomnia (N = 69), and no sleep disturbance (N = 24). The SADS suicide subscale was used to rate the severity of active suicidality. Results: The patients with hypersomnia and insomnia had significantly (p < .05) higher scores on the SADS suicide subscale than those without sleep disturbance. We also found that the patients with insomnia and hypersomnia were significantly (p < .001) more likely to become suicidal than the others. Conclusion: These data demonstrate that both insomnia and hypersomnia are associated with suicidal behavior in patients with major depression.Article Sleep Quality and Pain Threshold in Patients With Fibromyalgia(W.B. Saunders, 1999) Aǧargün, M.Y.; Tekeoǧlu, I.; Güneş, A.; Adak, B.; Kara, H.; Ercan, M.The purpose of the study was to examine the association between the subjective sleep quality and pain threshold in fibromyalgia. Sixteen patients with fibromyalgia were included in the study. The pain threshold was determined using a manual algometer. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality. The pain threshold was negatively correlated with the scores for subjective sleep quality, habitual sleep efficiency, and sleep disturbance and the PSQI global score. We conclude that there is a negative correlation between pain and sleep disturbance: increased pain sensitivity is associated with greater sleep disturbance.Article Sleep-Related Violence, Dissociative Experiences, and Childhood Traumatic Events(2002) Agargun, M.Y.; Kara, H.; Özer, Ö.A.; Kiran, Ü.; Selvi, Y.; Kiran, S.The aim of the present study was to test whether a relationship between dissociative experiences and violent behavior during sleep (VBS). The group was composed of 253 male and 129 female undergraduate students. The subjects were interviewed for parasomnias and sleep-related violence by using International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD)-revised criteria. Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) was also administered to the subjects. The subjects with sleep-related violence had higher mean DES score than those never reported VBS. The subjects with sleep-related violence had higher rates of history of physical abuse than the others. Suicidal attempts and self-mutilating behaviors were also more common among these subjects than the others. There is an association between sleep-related violence, childhood abuse, and dissociative experiences. Dissociative experiences may relate not only to daytime symptoms but also symptoms during sleep.Article Turkish Version of Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (Meq)(2007) Agargun, M.Y.; Cilli, A.S.; Boysan, M.; Selvi, Y.; Gulec, M.; Kara, H.The purpose of this study was to provide validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Morningness-Eeveningness Questionnaire (MEQ). The Turkish version of the scale was administered to the 171 healthy participants (87 men and 84 women) twice in different times. The internal consistency of the each question and total scores of the scale was examined by carrying out Cronbach's alpha statistic and Pearson correlation analysis. The test-retest reliability of the total MEQ scores was researched by applying dependent sample t-test and Pearson correlation analysis in two different application times. The reliability was satisfactory (Cronbach's alpha=0.81). Points of the questions were found significantly and positively correlated with the total point. There is not a significant change in two different application times. Internal consistency of the Turkish version was found high in the present study. The scale is adequate to distinguish "morning" and "evening" types in Turkish population.Article Venlafaxine Treatment in a Patient With Narcolepsy(2002) Tombul, T.; Özbek, H.; Kara, H.; Kiran, Ü.; Özer, Ö.A.
