Article Adverse Effects of Oxytetracycline and Enrofloxacin on the Fertility of Saanen Bucks(Springer Science and Business Media B.V., 2021) Yücel, U.M.; Koşal, V.; Kara, M.; Taşpınar, F.; Uslu, B.A.This study aimed to determine the adverse effects of oxytetracycline and enrofloxacin application on the fertility of Saanen bucks. For this purpose, twenty-four bucks were divided into three groups. Group I (control group) received only 5 ml of 0.9% NaCl for 7 days, group II was given a single dose of 20 mg/kg oxytetracycline and group III was given at a dose of 2.5 mg/kg per day for 7 days intramuscularly. Serum and semen samples were collected from the bucks at post-treatment 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 days and examined spermatological parameters (quantity, motility, density, abnormal sperm ratio, and live-dead sperm ratio), serum testosterone levels (with ELISA) and sperm DNA parameters (with Comet assay). The results showed no change in sperm volume, abnormal sperm rate, and dead-live sperm ratio in group II and III following oxytetracycline and enrofloxacin administration. However, a decrease in sperm density, sperm motility, mass activity, and testosterone levels, and an increase in sperm DNA damage were detected. These spermatological parameters (density, motility, mass activity) and testosterone levels were less decreased and sperm DNA damage was less increased in group II than group III. The greater damage in group III may be attributed to the longer duration of enrofloxacin administration compared to oxytetracycline and the effect of enrofloxacin on DNA. The results obtained from this study suggest that usage of oxytetracycline and especially enrofloxacin should be restricted and antibiotics with fewer side effects on sperm should be preferred in Saanen bucks during the reproduction period. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V.Article A Comparative Analysis of the Efficacy and Safety of Cisplatin and Oxaliplatin-Based Chemotherapy Regimens İn Elderly Patients With Metastatic Gastric Cancer(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2025) Urun, M.; Kara, M.Gastric cancer is a common type of cancer. While surgical treatment is considered the standard approach in early stages, there is currently no standard chemotherapy regimen for advanced and metastatic stages. The incidence of gastric cancer increases with age, making treatment more challenging. The choice of chemotherapy becomes more important in the elderly due to comorbidities, drug interactions and drug side effects. In our study, we investigated the efficacy and side effects of treatments applied to elderly patients. For our study, patients with recurrent or metastatic gastric cancer who were treated and followed up at Van Yuzuncu Yil University Medical Faculty Hospital between January 2008 and January 2024 were evaluated. Medical records were collected including patient demographics, treatment regimens and responses, grade 3-4 toxicities, date of progression, last follow-up and death. Performance score was assessed according to the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) criteria. The mean age of the patients was 73 years. The most common site of tumour occurrence was the gastric cardia. There were more male patients and the treatment responses were similar. However, there were notable differences in the incidence and severity of side effects. The survival data were comparable. Oxaliplatin and cisplatin-based chemotherapies have comparable effects in advanced gastric cancer in the elderly. However, the incidence of adverse effects differs, and cisplatin should be avoided in patients with nephrotoxicity. The number of patients is insufficient to draw definitive conclusions and further studies are needed. © 2025, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. Total of 20 (10 trained and 10 sedentary) male subjects performed an aerobic cycling exercise at the anaerobic threshold for about 30 min. The venous blood samples (pre and post exercise) and analysed for MDA using HPLC methods. Wilcoxon and Mann Whitney U-tests were included in the statistical methods for data analysis. Acute exercise caused a systematic increase in MDA levels in trained (36.2%) and sedentary (55.4%) subjects during exercise (p<0.001). The increase in MDA levels were higher in sedentary subjects (0.79±0.08 µmol/L vs 1.02±0.05 µmol/L) compared to trained subjects (0.73±0.05 µmol/L vs 0.97±0.07 µmol/L) (p<0.001). Acute exercise may cause higher levels of increase in oxidative stress as determined alteration of MDA levels in sedentary subjects. Thus the sedentary subjects should pay more attention to the physical activities. © 2018, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. Modern treatment of epilepsy includes treatment with drugs to avoid seizures. Search for new antiepileptic drugs continues due to the presence of resistant patients to drug treatment. Plants are important sources of new drug discovery for epilepsy. We aimed to evaluate anticonvulsive activity of methanolic extracts of Heliotropium (Scorpion herb, Herb for warts in Turkish) species namely Heliotropium hirsutissimum Grauer, H. dolosum De Not and H. lasiocarpum Fisch. et Mey. on mice. Material and Method: PTZ (pentylentetrazol) is used for the induction of convulsions. Experimental groups are PTZ and 3 groups of extracts of aforementioned Heliotropium species+PTZ. Result and Discussion: In H. hirsutissimum and H. lasiocarpum groups, number of animals having tonic-clonic convulsions was decreased compared to PTZ and H. dolosum groups however difference was found insignificant. Latency time for first myoclonic convulsion and latency time for first tonic-clonic convulsion were prolonged in all Heliotropium groups compared to PTZ group (p>0.05). Number of ex animals following tonic-clonic convolsions decreased in Heliotropium groups (p>0.05). Tonic-clonic convulsion period decreased in H. hirsutissimum and H. lasiocarpum (p>0.05). When results are evaluated together Heliotropium species may have an ethnopharmacological relevance for its anticonvulsive usage. © 2018 University of Ankara. Indole Acetic Acid (IAA), 2,3,5-Triiodo Benzoik Acid (TIBA) and Kinetin on human serum enzymes, myocardial creatine kinase (CK-MB), amylase, creatine kinase (CK), aspartate amino transferase (AST), serum glutamyl pruvic transferase (SGPT). alkaline phosphatase (ALK-P), δ glutamyl transferase (GGT-P) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were investigated (in vitro). I50 values of chemicals caused inhibition were determined by means of activity percentage - [I] diagrams. The results showed that IAA was an activator rather than an inhibitor. It only inhibited AST activity, but increased activities of CK, CK-MB, amylase, ALK-P and LDH. However, IAA ineffected on SGPT and GGT-P. Both TIBA and Kinetin inhibited CK-MB, but either chemicals ineffected on CK, amylase, ALK-P, GGT-P. On the other hand, TIBA ineffected on SGPT and LDH, while Kinetin increased activity of the same enzymes. In conclusion, it was showed that the studied chemicals weakly inhibited enzymes.Conference Object Impact of Physical Activity Performed on Different Times of Day on Cardiac and Skeletal Muscle Damage in Trained and Untrained Male Subjects(Wiley-blackwell, 2016) Algul, S.; Kara, M.; Ozcelik, O.Article Investigation of Irisin Level in Brucella Patients(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2021) Algul, S.; Senol, F.F.; Ugras, S.; Esmer, F.; Kara, M.; Ekici, P.; Ozcelik, O.This study aimed to determine whether the changes in the metabolism of Brucella patients affect the irisin hormone. Also, it is aimed to investigate the relationships between other laboratory findings used in the diagnosis of brucellosis patients and the irisin hormone. 160 persons (80 brucellosis, 80 controls) were included in this study. Blood was drawn from the people participating in the study following their overnight fast. Irisin level was measured by ELISA method, CRP and sedimentation levels were measured using autoanalysers and commercial kits. It was determined that the irisin level of Brucella patients was statistically significantly higher than the control group (p <0.05). It was determined that there is a negative correlation between irisin level and CRP and sedimentation level in Brucella patients. In Brucella patients, the higher irisin level than the control group showed a negative correlation with CRP and sedimentation levels, which are infection diagnosis criteria; It suggests that the level of irisin can be considered as a supportive diagnostic marker in these patients. Further studies are needed to evaluate irisin hormone as a supportive diagnostic criterion. © 2021, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. In this period, choice, duration and dosage of medication as well as the changing physiology of the mother should be taken into account. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are a group of drugs that have analgesic, anti-pyretic and antiinflammatory effects. This group of drugs can be used in the treatment of the ongoing rheumatic diseases or which occur during the pregnancy period and the complications that occur due to pregnancy. We aimed to show how it affects the number of ovarium preantral follicles of newborn fetus on rats by using Diclofenac Sodium which belongs to this drug family group. Diclofenac Sodium (1 mg/ kg, IM) was injected for 15 days from the 5th day of pregnancy to pregnant rats in Diclofenac Sodium group and saline (1 ml/ kg, IM) was injected to the pregnant rats of the sham group at the same time period. In the 4th week after birth, ovarian tissue preparates of rat pups were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and ovarian total tissue volumes and preantral follicle counts were evaluated under light microscope. There was no statistically significant difference between groups for ovarium total tissue volumes and preantral follicle numbers (p>0.05). Lowest value of follicular intensity was observed in Diclofenac sodium group among study groups however no statistically important difference was found (p>0.05). Results obtained in our study may be related with administration of drug in not a high dosage (1mg/kg). Further studies may be performed with higher doses. © 2017, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. Another group consisted of thirty-eight healthy subjects who has never claimed previous backpain history were undergone spinal x-ray as a control group. The angle between a line parallel to the cranial end plate of S 1 vertebrae and a horizontal line was defined for the Ferguson's angle. In both groups patients were 30 years old or over. We also measured spinal instability in both groups by a vertical line from the middle of the corpus of L 3 vertebrae. The results showed that in the low back pain group there was a statistically significant increase in the Ferguson's angle and 62% of this group had spinal instability. In the control group the Ferguson's angle was in normal range and only 4% of them had spinal instability.Article Significance of Ligature Technique on the Formation of Pulmonary Artery Stump Thrombosis in a Canine Model(ARSMB-KVBMG, 2005) Işik, F.; Kara, M.; Tunçözgür, B.; Dizbay Sak, S.; Erekul, S.; Kavukçu, Ş.Background : Thrombo-embolism following pulmonary resection is a serious complication with a fatal outcome. We have tried to clarify the role of ligature techniques used in pulmonary resection on the formation of pulmonary artery stump thrombosis, which may lead to a subsequent pulmonary thrombo-embolism. Material and methods : Two groups of 10 mongrel dogs underwent a standard left pneumonectomy under anesthesia. The transfixation, or the continuous ligature technique, was applied to close the pulmonary artery stump in each group. Morphological evaluation of the ligated pulmonary artery was carried out, including the macroscopic thrombus formation and microscopic findings. Results : The transfixation ligature technique showed a significantly greater incidence of macroscopic thrombosis in the pulmonary artery stump when compared with the continuous ligature technique (p = 0.033). This was confirmed by microscopic changes (p = 0.020). Conclusion : Thrombus formation in the pulmonary artery stump is more likely to occur following the closure of the stump with the transfixation ligature technique compared with the continuous ligature technique.Article The Stereological Ratio of Stromal/Parenchymal Components in Postnatal Prostate Tissue of Rats Prenatally Treated With Diclofenac Sodium(2013) Kara, M.; Raǧbetli, C.; Koyun, N.; Çölçimen, N.; Raǧbetli, M.Ç.Since diclofenac sodium extends the pregnancy and affects the fetus, our study aimed to stereologically investigate the components of the rat prostate with prenatally treated with diclofenac sodium. The rats were left overnight to mate. Pregnant animals were kept in a room tempreture with normal light and dark cycles and fed with normal diet. After injections to sham and treated groups for 15 days, 18 male offsprings were housed in three groups (6 placebo; 6 control; 6 treated). The 20 weeks-old animals were perfused and the prostates removed and embedded in paraffin. Tissue sections at 5μm thickness were taken at regular intervals and stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and Masson trichrome. Cavalieri principle was used for volume fractions analysis. Stereological examination revealed 55% acinar epitelium and 45% connective tissue in both control and placebo groups, as well as 60% acinar epitelium and 40% connective tissue in the treated group. Prenatally applied diclofenac sodium did not cause a statistically significant change in the prostate stroma-parenchymal ratio in 20-week old rats compared to the control animals (p>0.05). © 2013 OMU.
