Article The Effect on Anastomotic Leakage of Serum Zn, Cu Levels and Cu-Zn Ratio(1997) Aydin, M.; Guler, O.; Karaayvaz, M.; Sekeroglu, R.This study evaluated the influence of serum Zn and Cu levels on postoperative complication, following manual anastomosis of the alimentary track. Fifty seven vases of alimentary tract malignancy were included (22 stomach and 35 esophagus). Serum 2n and Cu levels were measured preoperatively and on the third, fifth and seventh postoperative days. Postoperative serum Zn levels were low in patients with anastomotic leakage, and there were significant differences in Zn levels between those with and without anastomotic leakage. However, there was no significant change in Cu levels. In the light of these findings, we conclude that Zn plays an effective role in anastomotic healing.Article Enzymatic Dissection for Palliative Treatment of Esophageal Carcinoma: an Experimental Study(2005) Isik, A.F.; Ozturk, G.; Ugras, S.; Karaayvaz, M.Patients with esophageal carcinoma generally lose their chance of curable surgical treatment when symptoms become evident. At this stage chemoradiotherapy and palliative treatment methods are the only options. We investigated the potential use of enzymatic treatment in tissue loosening to improve the esophageal passage especially in patients with advanced esophageal carcinoma. Specimens were prepared from resection materials (one adenocarcinoma, two squamous cell carcinomas) which were removed from three consecutive patients. They were treated with pancreatin at 2.5%, 5% and 10% of concentrations. Macroscopic and histopathologic examinations were performed to evaluate the effect. At 2.5% enzyme concentration no macroscopically change was observed in adenocarcinoma while mild softening occurred in the tissue samples of squamous cell carcinoma. Histopathologic examination revealed tissue and cell necrosis destruction at 5 and 10% concentrations in the latter samples. We observed clear destruction of squamous cell carcinoma tissue in both macroscopically and microscopically with in vitro enzyme application. This procedure, not only helps to open esophageal passage, but may also delay the growth of tumour and support the chemoradiotherapy. Enzymatic tumoral dissection (tumourolysis) is a promising method to alleviate the symptoms of esophageal carcinoma. © 2005 Published by European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery. All rights reserved.Article L-Carnitine Has a Protective Effect on the Colonic Mucosa During Abdominopelvic Radiotherapy in Rats(Sociedade Brasileira para o Desenvolvimento de Pesquisa em Cirurgia, 2016) Tas, S.; Ozkan, O.F.; Cikman, O.; Kiraz, A.; Akgun, Y.; Karaayvaz, M.PURPOSE: To evaluate histopathologically the radioprotective effect of L-carnitine on the colonic mucosa in rats undergoing abdominopelvic irradiation. METHODS: Thirty-two rats were randomly assigned to four experimental groups: intraperitoneal administration of normal saline (group 1) or L-carnitine (300 mL/kg; group 2), followed in groups 3 and 4, respectively, by one dose of abdominopelvic radiation (20 Gy) 30 min later. Rats were sacrificed 5 days after radiation, and their descending colons were resected for histopathological evaluation of the presence and severity of damage. RESULTS: Average damage scores did not differ significantly between groups 1 and 2 (0.13 ± 0.35 and 0.25 ± 0.46, respectively); the group 3 score was highest (10.25 ± 0.71), and the group 4 score (3.63 ± 1.41) was significantly lower than that of group 3 (both p = 0.0001). Pre-radiation L-carnitine administration significantly reduced mucosal thinning, crypt distortion, reactive atypia, inflammation, cryptitis, and reactive lymph-node hyperplasia (all p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: L-carnitine had a radioprotective effect on rat colonic mucosa. All rights reserved.Article Trichobezoars as a Cause of Gastrointestinal Obstructions: the Rapunzel Syndrome(1996) Şeker, B.; Dilek, O.N.; Karaayvaz, M.We report a trichobezoar extending from the stomach through the entire length of the small intestine to the caecum. A case history of a 6-year-old girl with trichobezoar is described. She is the ninth patient with Rapunzel syndrome in the literature. The epidemiology, clinical features, complications, treatment and literature are briefly reviewed.
