Article Concentration of Zn, Cu, Mn and Mg in Cattle With Natural Psoroptes Bovis Scabiei(indian veterinary Journal, 2005) Kozat, S; Ekin, S; Yuksek, N; Kaya, A; Agaoglu, ZScabies is caused by Psoroptes bovis. The most cited causes of the disease are the over crowded accommodation of the animals in the barns, malnutrition and imbalanced feeding (Sargison et al., 1995; Sekin et al., 1998). Trace elements and minerals are of a prominent value in terms of increasing the resistance against the disease in the biological organisms, causing severe clinical conditions. in case of their shortage or excess (Underwood and Suttle, 2001). The aim of this study is to find out the levels of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu) Manganese (Mn) and Magnesium (Mg) in Psoroptes scabiei in cattle.Article Estimation of Early Pregnancy by Electrical Resistance Values of Vaginal Mucosa in Cows and Heifers(Ecole Nationale veterinaire Toulouse, 2005) Tasal, I; Ataman, MB; Aksoy, M; Kaya, A; Karaca, F; Tekeli, TThe aim of this study was to investigate the availability of vaginal resistance values to estimate early pregnancy in heifers and cows on days 18-21 post-insemination. Seven Brown Swiss cows and ten heifers without any palpable reproductive disorders were used. Cloprostenol, a synthetic analogue of PGF(2 alpha), was administered intramuscularly twice (500 mu g) 11-days apart. After second cloprostenol administration, animals were observed for the overt signs oestrus and, inseminated twice with frozen semen after confirmation of oestrus by rectal palpation. Electrical conductivity of vaginal mucosa was measured through ventral wall of vagina adjacent to caudal end of cervix uteri by a handy-held instrument. Vaginal conductance of animals was measured twice, with a 12 h interval, on days 0 (day of oestrus), 3, 6, 10, 11 19 20 and 21 in cows, and on days 0 (day of oestrus), 3, 6, 10, 13, 18, 19 and 20 in heifers. To estimate plasma progesterone levels, jugular blood samples (10 mL) were also collected on days 19, 20 and 21 for cows, and 18, 19 and 20 for heifers. Pregnant animals were detected by rectal palpation 60 days after insemination. In pregnant cows, electrical resistance of vaginal mucosa measured between days 19-21 was significantly higher than non-pregnant animals, while vaginal resistance values determined on the day of insemination, and on days 3, 6, 10 and 13 post-insemination were similar in both groups. Likewise, vaginal impedance readings in pregnant heifers determined between days 18-20 were significantly higher than those non-pregnant animals. Vaginal resistance measurements in cows (between days 19-21) and heifers (between days 18-20) were significantly correlated with plasma progesterone concentrations both in pregnant and non-pregnant groups. It was concluded that vaginal resistance values might be used for the diagnosis of early pregnancy as a contributor or predictor method in cows and heifers.Article Influence of Melatonin Implantation on Sperm Quality, Biochemical Composition of the Seminal Plasma and Plasma Testosterone Levels in Rams(Ecole Nationale veterinaire Toulouse, 2000) Kaya, A; Baspinar, N; Yildiz, C; Kurtoglu, F; Ataman, MB; Haliloglu, SInfluence of the melatonin implantation on sperm quality, plasma testosterone levels and biochemical composition of the seminal plasma was evaluated in rams in the breeding and non-breeding season. Melatonin administration during the non-breeding season improved progressive motility and morphologically normal sperm rates. The mean plasma testosterone level was significantly higher in melatonin treated animals compared to untreated ones. Fructose, sodium, calcium, magnesium levels, and aspartate aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase activity in the seminal plasma were similar in melatonin treated and control rams. In contrast, melatonin administration during the breeding season did not enhance spermatologic parameters and plasma testosterone levels. Biochemical composition of the seminal plasma was also comparable in melatonin treated and untreated control groups. In conclusion, melatonin administration during the breeding season did not influence sperm quality, plasma testosterone levels and biochemical parameters evaluated in this study.Article Prevalence of Feline Retrovirus Infections in Van Cats(Natl veterinary Research inst, 2005) Yüksek, N; Kaya, A; Altug, N; Özkan, C; Agaoglu, ZTIt was aimed to determine the prevalence of feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) in Van cats, eradicate virus positive animals and protect virus negative animals from the infections. The study was performed on 132 Van cats (52 males and 80 females), between land 14 years of age. It was found that 4.5% of the cats were positive for FeLV and 3% of them were positive for FIV. In conclusion, it is suggested that the detection of FeLV and FIV positive cats and their eradication is very important for the protection of future generations of Van cats from these diseases.Article Renal Oxalosis in a Calf(Scientific Technical Research Council Turkey, 2002) Gülbahar, MY; Kaya, A; Gölen, IA case of neonatal renal oxalosis in a 7-day-old calf is described. Clinical biochemistry revealed increased blood urea nitrogen. Gross findings included thin renal medulla and dilated renal calyces containing numerous, small, pale yellow and granular calculi. Histologically, most cortical and medullary tubules were dilated with birefringent crystals, whereas the glomeruli appeared unaffected. The crystals were morphologically consistent with calcium oxalate by the Pizzolato technique. Diffuse interstitial fibrosis and focal accumulations of lymphocytes were also noted.Article Serum Adenosine Deaminase Activity and Biochemical Parameters in Chronic Fascioliasis in Sheep(indian veterinary Journal, 2006) Kozat, S; Ekin, S; Kaya, A; Denizhan, VLetter Spontaneous Rupture of Arteriovenous Fistula in a Chronic Dialysis Patient(Elsevier Science inc, 2003) Çaksen, I; Odabas, D; Arslan, S; Kaya, AArticle Stomach Impaction in Ostriches (Struthio Camelus)(Amer Assoc Avian Pathologists, 2002) Yüksek, N; Agaoglu, Z; Kaya, A; Aslan, L; Erdogan, HM; Akgul, YThis study involved 14 ostriches of both sexes between 3 and 24 mo of age. Some hematologic and biochemical parameters were studied in animals with stomach impaction. Clinical examination of the birds revealed anorexia, emaciation, decreased defecation, listlessness, separation from the flock, and recumbence. The total number of leukocytes (10.4 x 10(3) mm(3)), the concentrations of serum glucose (166 mg/dl), and total protein (2.4 g/dl) decreased; serum creatine phosphokinase (1240 U/L) and alkaline phosphatase (598 U/L) increased; whereas no changes were found in the concentrations of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, and copper. Medical treatment was initiated in 13 animals; six of them recovered and seven birds died. Necropsy revealed edema, erosions, and hemorrhagic ulcers in the stomach of the dead birds. Foreign bodies such as sand; stone; pieces of wood, glass, and plastic; and metallic objects were encountered in the stomach at the necropsy. In one bird, metallic foreign body was diagnosed and the bird was referred to surgery. Under stress factors, ostriches tend to eat foreign material; therefore, adequate housing, nutrition, and care are crucial in prevention of stomach impaction.Article Studies on Some Haematological and Biochemical Parameters in Clinically Healthy Ostriches(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2003) Agaoglu, Z; Yoksek, N; Altug, N; Kaya, A; Baydas, BThis study was carried out to determine the normal haematological and biochemical parameters of clinically healthy ostriches 1-3 years old of either sex. Red blood cells, white blood cells, haematocrit and haemoglobin values (as haematological parameters) and glucose, total protein, albumin, globulin, urea, kreatinine, serum enzymes (ALP, AST, ALT, GGT, CK, amilase) (as biochemical parameters) and electrolytes (Ca, P, Mg, Zn, Cu, Na, K, Cl) levels were measured. It was concluded that the values obtained in this study could be used as reference values for ostriches.Article Unusual Presentation of Infantile Hemangioendothelioma(Wiley, 2005) Bay, A; Öner, AF; Etlik, O; Koseoglu, B; Kaya, AInfantile hemangioendothelioma is a rare benign hepatic tumor arising from mesenchymal tissue. Most of the cases present with congestive heart failure and asymptomatic abdominal mass were before 6 months of age. We described a patient with projectile vomiting, which is quite an Unusual presentation. Following surgical resection, neither recurrence nor symptoms were seen in 2 years of follow-up.
