Article Adenosine Deaminase in the Diagnosis of White Muscle Diseases in Lambs(Polish Soc veterinary Sciences Editorial office, 2006) Altug, N.; Agaoglu, Z. T.; Yuksek, N.; Kaya, A.; Keles, I.The aim of the study was to investigate the importance of ADA serum and its isoenzyme activity in diagnosing white muscle disease in lambs. The animal material used in the study was forty seven Akkaraman lambs - twenty seven of which had clinical signs of white muscle disease (white muscle disease group) and twenty healthy lambs (control group). Blood samples were taken and Se levels, CK, LDH, AST, ADA and ADA izoenzyme activity were determined. Following this, the animals in the white muscle disease group received I mg sodium selenit + 60 mg vitamin E intramuscularly as a single dose. Fourteen days following sodyum selenit + vitamin E application blood samples were again taken and the same analysis repeated. Apart from ADA2 activity, other enzyme activities were significantly high (p < 0.001), and serum Se concentrations were significantly low (p < 0.001) in animals of the white muscle disease group compared to the control group. When the parameters obtained from the white muscle disease group were compared before and after treatment it was indicated that all enzyme parameters decreased significantly (p < 0.001) after treatment. On the other hand, serum Se concentration increased (p < 0.01) after treatment in the diseased group. The results confirm that determining ADA serum and its isoenzymes, together with CK, LDH and AST values seems to be useful in diagnosing white muscle disease.Article Allelopathic Potential of Macrofungi on Germinating Maize (Zea Mays L.) Grain(Academic Journals, 2010) Uzun, Y.; Türker, M.; Kaya, A.; Demirel, K.; Işler, S.; Keleş, A.The effect of methanol extracts of 10 macrofungi was evaluated on grain germination of maize (Zea mays L.). Germination percentage, radicle and plumule length and the level of carbohydrates and fatty acids were measured. Fungal metabolites inhibited germination up to 90.96%, plumule (97.77%) and radicle (92.83%) development. Plumule and radicle lengths were stimulated 35.26 and 10.60% in some assays, respectively. The fungal metabolites decreased the glucose (97.60%), sucrose (90.34%), fructose (96.85%), maltose (95.64%), oleic acid (97.50%) and linoleic acid (98.25%) levels, whereas increasing levels of the glucose (165.14%), sucrose (166.53%), fructose (83.18%), maltose (124.73%), oleic acid (6975.00%) and linoleic acid (5233.33%) were detected in some assays. It is concluded that macrofungi metabolites have commonly inhibitory effects on physiological and morphological processes of germinating maize grain except for considerable increases in the some parameters investigated. © 2010 Academic Journals.Article Analysis of Trace Metal Levels in Wild Mushrooms(Asian Journal of Chemistry, 2011) Kaya, A.; Genccelep, H.; Uzun, Y.; Demirel, K.Three macro elements and nine trace elements contents of 30 wild edible mushrooms collected from Kahramanmaras province of Turkey, were analyzed. The minimum and maximum heavy metal amounts of mushrooms were analyzed as mg/g dry weight for Ca (0.072-8.32), Mg (0.33-6.56), K (8.11-28.15) and as mg/kg for Fe (65.56-7156), Zn (13.18-230.85), Cu (4.30-84.67), Cr (0.77-80.03), Mn (5.15-91.21), Pb (not detected-3.10), Ni (0.79-174.15), Cd (0.00-8.67) and Co (0.00-10.92). The potassium content was found to be higher than those of the other minerals in all mushrooms, studied and Morchella deliciosa was found to have the highest Fe, Cr, Mn, Pb, Ni and Co concentrations among the analyzed species.Article The Anthropometric Measurements and Percentile Curves of Children Aged 0-5 Years in Eastern Turkey(Univ West indies Faculty Medical Sciences, 2021) Sal, E.; Dogan, M.; Cesur, Y.; Ariyuca, S.; Basaranoglu, M.; Kaya, A.; Mazicioglu, M.Objective: To determine the growth reference value of children in our province and to compare these values with current values of the USA and other local values of our country. Methods: A total of 615 boys and 586 girls with different socioeconomic levels and ages of 0-5 years were included in the study. In all children, weight, height, head circumference, abdominal circumference, hip circumference, mid-arm circumference, and lower segment length were taken. All measurements were performed by the same paediatrician. The lambda-mu-sigma method was used for the preparation of percentile curves. Results: The body weight, head circumference and chest circumference measurements of boys were significantly higher than those in girls. Anthropometric measurements of children in high-income groups were higher than those in the low-income group. All of the anthropometric parameters except upper mid-arm circumference were higher in children fed with breast milk and formula milk than in children who only fed with breast milk. The relation between the mother's education level and anthropometric parameters was insignificant. Conclusion: Our results showed that the anthropometric measurements of our children were similar to those of west Turkey as well as those of the United States. On the other hand, our children's anthropometric measurements were higher than other local values. Relatively high values of height have been interpreted as a genetic feature.Article Assessment of Electrocardiographic Findings, Serum Nitric Oxide, Cardiac Troponins and Some Enzymes in Calves With Hyperkaliemia Related To Neonatal Diarrhoea(Ecole Nationale veterinaire Toulouse, 2011) Ozkan, C.; Altug, N.; Yuksek, N.; Kaya, A.; Akgul, Y.The aims of the present study were to characterize ECG changes in calves with hyperkaliemia due to neonatal diarrhoea and to determine concomitant variations of serum concentrations of NO and of sonic cardiac markers such as cardiac troponins I and T and serum enzyme AST, LDH, CK and CK-MB activities. For that, ECG examinations were performed and serum biochemical parameters were measured in 13 diarrhoeic calves developing hyperkaliemia before and 5 hours after intravenous electrolyte (NaCl and Na2HCO3) administration and also in 5 healthy control calves. Compared to controls, diarrhoeic and hyperkaliemic calves exhibited significant alterations in electrolyte concentrations (Increases of K, Mg and P concentrations coupled to decreases of Na and Cl concentrations), a significant blood accumulation of nitrogen compounds (BUN and creatinine) and significant increases in ALP, LDH, CK and GGT activities. Furthermore, the serum NO concentrations have greatly enhanced in some individuals. By contrast, the serum troponin concentrations and the heart specific CK-MB and AST activities were similar between the 2 groups whereas electrocardiography changes were evidenced in diarrhoeic calves: P wave anomalies were observed in sonic diseased calves and the mean amplitude and the mean duration of the QRS complex and the T wave were markedly increased. The fluid electrolyte therapy has restored the electrolyte balance and has globally improved the parameters of the cardiac function but has failed to counteract the blood azote accumulation and the release of ALP, LDH, CK and GOT enzymes and even has aggravated the decreases in total protein and albumin concentrations and the glycaemia variations. These results suggest that the diarrhoea-related hyperkaliemia has led to disturbances into the cardiac function without inducing severe myocardium lesions in calves but was coupled to acute renal failure.Article Bibliometric Analysis of Studies on Academic Burnout in Students(Open Access Publishing Association, 2024) Bali, O.; Kaya, A.; Sata, M.; Allen, K.-A.Academic burnout is characterised by emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation, and diminished personal accomplishment amongst students. Despite its rising prominence in recent discussions, there remains a lack of systematic reviews encapsulating the extensive literature on academic burnout. This bibliometric study aims to systematically review the literature and determine trends in academic burnout research. A total of 805 studies on academic burnout were retrieved from the WoS database and 570 articles meeting the selection criteria were analysed. The distribution of articles was analysed based on categories, publication years, and originating countries. Additionally, pertinent topics, journals, authors, and patterns of global and local citations were examined. Our analysis revealed a notable increase in articles on academic burnout in recent years. Leading contributors in terms of publications include China, the USA, and Finland. Recently, themes such as "Covid-19", "depression", "resilience", "classroom enjoyment", and specific demographics like "medical students" and "working students" have been frequently associated with academic burnout research. This research reveals the multifaceted structure of academic burnout. As a result, educational professionals can incorporate the multifaceted structure resulting from this research into programs designed to reduce academic burnout. © by the authors.Article A Case of Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis Mimicking Leukodystrophy(2010) Kaya, A.; Acikgoz, M.; Ustyol, L.; Avcu, S.; Sal, E.; Okur, M.; Caksen, H.Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is a monophasic, immune-mediated demyelinating disorder that can follow immunizations or more often infections including rubeola, rubella, varicella, herpes zoster, mumps, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, or, more commonly, other nonspecific upper respiratory tract infections. Documentation of a preceding illness is not required to make this diagnosis. This report examines the case of a 9-month-old male patient presenting with the features of an acute leukodystrophy following innoculation with the mixed vaccine Pentaxim (Sanofi Pasteur, LyonFrance) while suffering from a lower respiratory tract infection, and who was eventually diagnosed as ADEM. The case is presented as a reminder that ADEM can sometimes be linked to lower respiratory tract infection and vaccination, and that the features in such cases can be confused with leukodystrophy.Article A Case of Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension Related With Vesicoureteral Reflux(2011) Akgün, C.; Taşkin, G.A.; Akbayram, S.; Kaya, A.; Temel, H.; Yuca, S.A.; Çaksen, H.Pseudotumor cerebri is idiopathic intracranial hypertension. The etiology of this syndrome has not been fully clarified. Excess cerebrospinal fluid production, scarcity of cerebrospinal fluid absorption, intracranial venous pressure elevation, increased intracranial blood volume are all thought to be responsible. The symptoms of the disease may be ordered according to prevalence as follows: headache due to increased intracranial pressure, blurred vision and diplopia. A thirteen-year-old female patient was brought in with complaints of headache, double and blurred vision. Systemic arterial hypertension (140/70 mmHg) was determined. Vesicoureteral reflux was detected as the hypertension etiology. In this article a rare pseudotumor cerebri case is presented secondary to vesicoureteral reflux which caused hypertension.Article A Case of Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis With Anal Fistula(Kurume University School of Medicine, 2010) Akbayram, S.; Akgun, C.; Ozen, S.; Kaya, A.; Tuncer, O.; Yuca, S.A.; Oner, A.F.Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is an uncommon clinically heterogeneous disorder characterized by the proliferation and accumulation of Langerhans cells with local infiltration of tissues and organ destruction. LCH takes many clinical forms, affecting different systems and different sites in the same system with variable outcomes. Bone, skin, lymph node, pituitary, liver, lung, bone marrow and spleen involvement can be seen in patients with LCH. Involvement of the perianal site is rare. In this article, a 16-month-old boy with multiple organ involvement including skin, liver, lung, and bone is presented. Aside from these systemic involvements, he also had a simple anal fistula. According to our best knowledge, this case of LCH with anal fistula is only the second to be reported in childhood. We would like to emphasize that LCH may be associated with anal fistula; therefore, we suggest that patients with LCH should be examined for this condition.Letter A Case of Neurobrucellosis With Hydrocephaly(Univ West indies Faculty Medical Sciences, 2013) Yilmaz, C.; Kaya, A.; Guven, A. Clinically, it is characterized by severe diarrhea, dehydration and metabolic disturbances like hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, hypocalcemia, hypoproteinemia. A 2.5-years-old-girl with diarrhea, weight loss, abdominal distention, extremities edema, vomit which occurred after the beginning of supplementary nutrition was presented to emphasize that celiac crisis should be keep in mind in patient with gastrointestinal symptoms, which are best known in celiac disease, metabolic disturbance and abdominal distention.Article Central Diabetes Insipidus Following Intracranial Hemorrhage Due To Vitamin K Deficiency in a Neonate(2005) Çaksen, H.; Odabaş, D.; Kaya, A.; Cesur, Y.; Kiymaz, N.; Etlik, Ö.; Turhan, S.A previously healthy 30-day-old girl presented with seizures, irritability and inability to sleep for three days. Vitamin K was not given just after birth. She was lethargic. A multifocal clonic seizure was evident during examination. Anisocoria was diagnosed on eye examination. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed intracerebral hemorrhage, ventricular dilatation, and hematoma in the left temporofrontal region extending to the hypothalamus. Central diabetes insipidus was diagnosed by water deprivation due to dehydration and hypernatremia, and then desmopressin was added to phenobarbital. The possible mechanism of central diabetes insipidus in our patient is damage of vasopressin pathway resulting from compression of hemorrhage. An operation of ventriculoperitoneal shunt was also performed due to hydrocephalus. While she was symptom-free except for neurological sequel during routine control examinations after discharging from hospital, the parents said that she died, most probably from bronchopneumonia, at the age of 7.5 months. In conclusion, we emphasize that prophylactic vitamin K should be administrated to all babies just after birth, and infants with intracranial hemorrhage should carefully be monitored for central diabetes insipidus.Article A Checklist of Macrofungi of Besni (Adiyaman) District(2004) Kaya, A.; Akan, Z.; Demirel, K.Field studies were carried out in the Besni district between 2001 and 2002, and macrofungi samples were collected. Its classic triads are abdominal pain, mass in abdominal area and icter. A 2-year-old girl was brought in with temperature, vomiting and abdominal pain complaints. In her physical examination, there was no sensitivity, defense and rebound in the abdomen. There was also no icter in her body. In the laboratory examination aspartate transaminase and alanine aminotransferase were slightly high, gama-glutamyl transferase and alkaline phosphatase also significantly high. Her abdomen ultrasonography showed a dimensionally cystic dilatation with dimensions of 2x1,5 cm and cholecytitis was seen in choledochus proximals. In abdomen computerized tomography a dimensionally 13 mm cystic structure was observed in choledochus distal terminus adjacency associated with choledochus. Our case was orientated to pediatric surgery in terms of follow-up and therapy.Article Clinicopathological and Biochemical Evaluation of Feline Infectious Peritonitis in Turkish Van Cats(Hellenic veterinary Medical Soc, 2022) Ozbek, M.; Ozkan, C.; Kaya, A.; Yildirim, S.; Kozat, S.; Akgul, Y.This study was performed to evaluate serum homocysteine and nitric oxide levels in cats with Feline Infectious Peritonitis and present biochemical and clinicopathological alterations related to the disease. The material of this study consisted of 30 Turkish Van Cats of different ages and genders with Feline Infectious Peritonitis that were definitely diagnosed by post-mortem examinations and immunohistochemistry. The control group consisted of 6 healthy Turkish Van Cats of different ages and genders that were brought for routine clinical examination. Cats in the study group had clinical findings such as loss of appetite, weight loss, high fever, persistent fever, jaundice, dehy-dration, vomiting, respiratory system symptoms, anemia, nervous findings, uveitis, and ascites. These cats were mon-itored and following the death, post-mortem examinations were performed and cases with a definitive diagnosis were included in the study. Among the cats consisting study group, while 25 had the dry form of the disease, 5 had wet form. According to the hematological results, there was a statistically significant reduction in platelet counts. The biochemi-cal results showed statistically significant alterations that creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, creatine kinase myocardial band, homocysteine, and nitric oxide concentrations were higher than the control group. Besides albumin concentrations were lower and the albumin/globulin ratio was 0.53. As a result; this is the first detailed study in Turkish Van Cats with Feline Infectious Peritonitis that evaluated clinical, hematological, biochemical, and pathological findings. Furthermore, serum homocysteine and nitric oxide levels were evaluated for the first time in cats with vasculitis which is the most important complication of the disease. It is concluded that the evaluation of serum homocysteine and nitric oxide concentrations in Feline Infectious Peritonitis may assist the antemortem diagnosis of e disease.Article The Clinicopathological Features and Survival of Castleman Disease: a Multicenter Turkish Study(Verduci Editore s.r.l, 2022) Yildiz, J.; Bagci, M.; Sayin, S.; Kaya, A.; Yilmaz, F.; Ekinci, O.; Altuntas, F.Objective: In this study, we aimed to investigate the clinicopathological features and survival of CD, which is quite rare and has many unknowns. Patients and Methods: This study was conducted by retrospectively evaluating patients diagnosed with CD in six different centers in Turkey. Results: The median age of 33 patients included in the study was 49 and 51.5% (n = 17) of these patients were women. 18 (54.5%) patients were in the hyaline vascular subtype and most of the patients were UCD (n = 20, 60.6%). The most common involvement region was head and neck (n = 19, 57.5%). The UCD group was younger than the MCD group (p=0.027). Visceral lymph node involvement was higher in MCD than in UCD (p=0.001). Similarly, it was observed that there was more hepatomegaly (p=0.035) and splenomegaly (p=0.013) in the MCD group. During the median 19.5 months follow-up period, there were no patients who died. Conclusions: It was observed that UCD and MCD are different clinical entities. Promising survival times can be achieved with surgical and systemic treatments in both subtypes of this extremely rare disease. However, this result should be supported by well-designed prospective comprehensive studies. © 2022 Verduci Editore s.r.l. All rights reserved.Article Comparison of Cerebral Oximeter and Pulse Oximeter Values in the First 72 Hours in Premature, Asphyctic and Healthy Newborns(Univ West indies Faculty Medical Sciences, 2014) Kaya, A.; Okur, M.; Sal, E.; Peker, E.; Kostu, M.; Tuncer, O.; Kirimi, E.Aim: The monitoring of oxygenation is essential for providing patient safety and optimal results. We aimed to determine brain oxygen saturation values in healthy, asphyctic and premature newborns and to compare cerebral oximeter and pulse oximeter values in the first 72 hours of life in neonatal intensive care units. Methods: This study was conducted at the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Van Yuzuncu Yil University Research and Administration Hospital. Seventy-five neonatal infants were included in the study (28 asphyxia, 24 premature and 23 mature healthy infants for control group). All infants were studied within the first 72 hours of life. We used a Somanetics 5100C cerebral oximeter (INVOS cerebral/somatic oximeter, Troy, MI, USA). The oxygen saturation information was collected by a Nellcor N-560 pulse oximeter (Nellcor-Puriton Bennet Inc, Pleasanton, CA, USA). Results: In the asphyxia group, the cerebral oximeter average was 76.85 +/- 14.1, the pulse oximeter average was 91.86 +/- 5.9 and the heart rate average was 139.91 +/- 22.3. Among the premature group, the cerebral oximeter average was 79.08 +/- 9.04, the pulse oximeter average was 92.01 +/- 5.3 and the heart rate average was 135.35 +/- 17.03. In the control group, the cerebral oximeter average was 77.56 +/- 7.6, the pulse oximeter average was 92.82 +/- 3.8 and the heart rate average was 127.04 +/- 19.7. Conclusion: Cerebral oximeter is a promising modality in bedside monitoring in neonatal intensive care units. It is complementary to pulse oximeter. It may be used routinely in neonatal intensive care units.Article Comparison of Nifedipine and Captopril in Children With Pulmonary Hypertension Due To Broncopneumonia(Oxford Univ Press, 2008) Uner, A.; Dogan, M.; Demirtas, M.; Acikgoz, M.; Temel, H.; Kaya, A.; Caksen, H.This study included 40 children, who were diagnosed with pneumonia and pulmonary hypertension (from the radiographic and clinical features), was performed at Yuzuncu Yil University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, from September 2003 to July 2005. Patients who had pneumonia and congenital heart disease or systemic hypertension or renal and liver disease together were excluded from the study. Blood gas analysis and oxygen concentration, measured with pulse oximetry, were performed in all patients. Besides chest X-ray, electrocardiography and echocardiographic search was also carried out. Echocardiographic examination was performed by using M mode, two-dimensional echocardiography and colored Doppler sonotron Vingmed CFM 725. At echocardiographic examination, pulmonary hypertension is defined as above 35 mmHg of pulmonary artery pressure. For echocardiographic examination, patients with pulmonary hypertension were divided into two groups. Captopril (2 mg/kg/day, three doses a day) and nifedipine (0.5 mg/kg/day, three doses a day) were given to the first and the second group, respectively. Echocardiography was performed daily until normal pulmonary artery pressure was achieved. At the beginning of the treatment, the patients were treated with double antibiotics and antibiotic change was carried out in needed cases at the follow up. Digoxin was administered to the cases of respiratory infection with heart failure.Article Comparıson of Pulse Oxymeter and Cerebral Oxymeter Values in Healthy Newborns in the First Five Mınutes of Life(Nobelmedicus, 2014) Taskin, G.A.; Kaya, A.; Sal, E.; Üstyol, L.; Peker, E.; Tuncer, O.; Kırımi, E.Objective: Practical approaches in delivery rooms have been discussed about oxygen usage in recent years. In this study, it was aimed to correlate preductal arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2), heart rate per minute and serebral oxygen saturation (SbO2) values of first five minutes of life and to try the pulse oxymeter (PO) and cerebral oxymeter (SO) usage practice in delivery room. Material and Method: A hundred healthy term uncomplicated newborn babies, who were born via normally spontan vaginal route, were included in the study. SpO2, SbO2, heart rate measurements and blood gase analysis of first five minutes of postnatal life were completed. Babies, who needed oxygen during measurements, were not taken in to the study.. Results: While postnatal 1st minute SpO2 value was 83.0±4.4 (74-94)%; at 5th minute these measurements reached to 92.9±3.5 (85-98)% with gradually increment. Except values of 4th and 5th minutes; SpO2 values were found statistically significant high with each other (p<0.05). At SbO2 measurements, suitable data was taken from 100% of the babies in first minute of life. While postnatal mean SbO2 value of the first minute was 48.9±9.9 (32-74)%; these measurements were reached to 69.9±9.5 (46-89)% at 5th minute gradually increment as like as SpO2 values. Conclusion: SO is complementary to PO in delivery room and can be used routinely. It was seen also in our study; oxygen need of newborns can be determined faster and more accurately with SO use in delivery room so unnecessary oxygen usage and its potential risks can be avoided.. © 2015, Nobelmedicus. All Rights Reserved.Article Congenital Primary Hypothyroidism Associated With the Rare Form of Nonimmune Hydrops Fetalis(2010) Yuca, S.A.; Cesur, Y.; Kirimi, E.; Sari, S.; Kaya, A.; Doǧan, M.We present a male newborn born with diffuse edema and ascites. A diagnosis of congenital primary hypothyroidism was made based on thyroid hormone levels of total T4 1.74 μg/dL, free T4 0.30 ng/dL and TSH >75 μIU/mL and thyroid hormone replacement therapy was initiated. At day 15 of therapy, the thyroid function tests of the patient reached normal limits, and his edema and ascites regressed. In this report we present a newborn case of hypothyroidism that was accompanied by nonhydrops fetalis. We want to emphasize that congenital hypothyroidism may present with severe symptoms such as hydrops.
