    The Associatin of Sella Turcica Morphology and Dimension With Craniofacial and Dental Anomalies

    Sella turcica, which keeping the pituitary gland inside, is frequently used in cephalometric analysis during the orthodontic treatment planning because it can be easily detected in lateral cephalometric radiographs. Embryologically, the cartilage forming the anterior wall of the sella turcica develops from the neural crest cells. Similarly, it has been reported that the dental epithelial progenitor cells and maxillary, palatal and frontonasal development regions also generated from neural crest cells and these cells are effective in sella turcica bridging and tooth development and eruption. Thus, in the literature, the variations in sella turcica dimensions and morphology has been associated with different craniofacial and dental anomalies due to its relationship with pituitary gland, development origin, and anatomic position. At this point, the correct analysis of sella turcica, provide early diagnosis of the anomalies and pathologies that can be arise in the future. However, it has been observed that conflicting results were obtained from these studies in which subjects with different ethnical origin, age, and craniofacial morphologies were evaluated and different radiographic techniques were used. In this review, it was aimed to examine these studies which were evaluated the association of sella turcica dimensions and morphology with different craniofacial and dental anomalies. © 2023, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi.     Determination of Erythrocyte Catalase and Carbonic Anhydrase Activities in Patients With Coronary Artery Disease

    Free oxygen radicals or reactive oxygen species are accepted to have an active role in the patogenesis of coronary artery disease. Thirty five patients with coronary artery disease including 10 women and 25 men were enrolled in this study performed in order to determine the activities of catalase (CAT) and carbonic anhydrase (CA) in patients with coronary artery disease. Control group included 33 individuals, seven women and 26 men, with normal angiograms. CAT and CA enzyme activities in red blood cell samples of patients and control subjects were measured with spectrophotometry (with Aebi method) and carbon dioxide hydration method, respectively, and compared statistically. CAT values were 13.09±4.74 EU/gHb and 21.30±17.99 EU/gHb-1 and CA enzyme activities were 0.75±0.28 EU/gHb and 2.06±0.24 EU/gHb in patients with coronary artery disease and control subjects, respectively. The erythrocyte CAT and CA enzyme activities in the patient group were statistically significantly lower than those of the control group (p=0.015, p<0.001). It may be concluded that acid-base balance in the erythrocytes is disordered with the decreasing CA enzyme activities of patients with coronary artery disease. The lower levels of CAT enzyme activity which is a protective enzyme against free radical damage may be due to the oxidative stress from which the patients suffered, and manipulations toward erasing this stress may be effective in the prevention and treatment of the disease. © Gülhane Askeri Tip Akademisi 2011.

    Effect of Low-Level Laser Therapy on Peri-Miniscrew Fluid Prostaglandin E2 and Substance P Levels: a Controlled Clinical Trial

    Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effect of low-level laser therapy on peri-miniscrew fluid prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and substance P (SP) levels during orthodontic treatment. Methods: A total of 15 individuals were included in this study. Miniscrews were inserted to the inter-radicular region of the maxillary right and left second premolar and the first molar teeth, and diode lasers were randomly applied to the right or left side. Irradiation was performed at 940 nm wavelength using a gallium-aluminum-arsenide diode laser with 100 mW power output, 0.125 cm2 spectral area, 8 J/cm2 energy density, and 10 seconds of exposure time. Peri-miniscrew fluid samples were collected on the 1st, 3rd, and 7th days, and PGE2 and SP levels were assessed. For statistical comparison, two-way (factors) analysis of variance with repeated measurements on one-factor levels was used at statistical significance (p) of <0.05. Results: PGE2 levels on the 1st, 3rd, and 7th days were 160.64±10.05, 135.17±37.18, and 98.57±22.94, respectively, in the control group and 150.75±9.08, 87.17±40.67, and 78.10±16.50, respectively, in the laser group. SP levels on the 1st, 3rd, and 7th days were 79.90±12.05, 64.61±10.05, and 70.05±9.10, respectively, in the control group and 76.32±11.39, 60.25±9.08, and 65.71±5.59, respectively, in the laser group. The differences in PGE2 and SP levels between the laser and control groups were not statistically significant at all time intervals. Conclusion: Low-level laser therapy cannot be recommended as a clinical adjunct therapy to reduce inflammation and pain around the miniscrews. © Copyright 2020 by Turkish Orthodontic Society - Available online at turkjorthod.org

    Implementation of Artifact Removal Algorithms in Gait Signals for Diagnosis of Parkinson Disease

    Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurological disease that progresses further over time. Individuals suffering from this condition have a deficiency of dopamine, a neurotransmitter found in the brain's nerve cells that is critical for coordinating body movement. In this study, a new approach is proposed for the diagnosis of PD. Common Average Reference (CAR), Median Common Average Reference (MCAR), and Weighted Common Average Reference (WCAR) methods were primarily utilized to eliminate noise from the multichannel recorded walking signals in the resulting PhysioNet dataset. Statistical features were obtained from the clean walking signals following the Local Binary Pattern (LBP) transformation application. Logistic Regression (LR), Random Forest (RF), and K-nearest neighbor (Knn) methods were utilized in the classification stage. A high success rate with a value of 92.96% was observed with Knn. It was also determined that signals on which foot and the signals obtained from which point of the sole of the foot were effective in PD diagnosis in the study. In light of the findings, it was observed that noise reduction methods increased the success rate of PD diagnosis. © 2021 Lavoisier. All rights reserved.
