Article Anatomical and Stereological Examination of Infected Lung Area Volumes in Ct Images of Covid-19 Positive Patients by Age and Gender(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2023) Koyun, N.; Akyol, V.; Elasan, S.; Göya, C.; Gizli, G.SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), a previously unidentified type of coronavirus in humans, causes respiratory tract infection. The infection is transmitted by droplets and leads to several serious diseases characterized by acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). We aimed to examine the changes in the volumes of lung regions infected with COVID-19, a new and highly pathogenic strain, according to age and gender. After obtaining ethical permission, 6700 patients who applied with positive COVID-19 test were selected between 01/03/2020 and 01/03/2021. Patients with asthma, bronchiectasis, obstructive pulmonary disease, pleurisy, allergic lung disease, lung tumor, and smokers were excluded from the study. After the excluded patients, computed tomography images of a total of 407 COVID-19-positive patients, 188 women, and 219 men, were obtained retrospectively. From the images taken, 2 to 10-decade groups of male and female patients between the ages of 10 and 100 were formed for the study. Images were skipped at certain intervals from the lung CT images for each patient in the groups. By applying stereological methods to the images, the total volume of the lung and the volumes of the infected lung regions were calculated. In the analysis of the infected COVID-19 lung volume/total lung volume (%) ratio by gender and decades, there was a statistically significant difference according to gender in the 2nd, 6th, and 9th decades [(p=0.002), (p=0.001) and (p=0.032)] was observed. In the comparison of the infected COVID-19 lung volume/total lung volume ratio by decades, a statistically significant difference was observed in both genders (p=0.001). Further studies and medical research are needed to better understand age-and sex-specific differences for effective intervention. © 2023, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. N.; Koyun, N.Objective: The spur or the supracondyloid process of the humerus has been of special interest to anatomists, anthropologists and clinicians. Apart from the anthropological research by ancient authors and clinical studies carried out half a century ago, no study of this variation appear in the literature. The aim of the present work is to investigate this variation in the living subjects. Methods: The present information was performed on direct radiograms of the elbow obtained from the volunteer individuals. This study was carried out over a 3-year period from 2005-2008. Results: The spur was found in 9 cases among the 903 persons examined. Bilateral occurrence of the process was higher than that reported in the literature. The cases with the spur reported mild pain in the forearm over a long period. Conclusion: This study showed a higher occurrence of bilateral supracondyloid process than previously reported. It is also suggested that the cases reported as asymptomatic may not be fully free of the complaint of pain which might assist the clinician in their diagnosis.Article The Stereological Ratio of Stromal/Parenchymal Components in Postnatal Prostate Tissue of Rats Prenatally Treated With Diclofenac Sodium(2013) Kara, M.; Raǧbetli, C.; Koyun, N.; Çölçimen, N.; Raǧbetli, M.Ç.Since diclofenac sodium extends the pregnancy and affects the fetus, our study aimed to stereologically investigate the components of the rat prostate with prenatally treated with diclofenac sodium. The rats were left overnight to mate. Pregnant animals were kept in a room tempreture with normal light and dark cycles and fed with normal diet. After injections to sham and treated groups for 15 days, 18 male offsprings were housed in three groups (6 placebo; 6 control; 6 treated). The 20 weeks-old animals were perfused and the prostates removed and embedded in paraffin. Tissue sections at 5μm thickness were taken at regular intervals and stained with Hematoxylin-eosin and Masson trichrome. Cavalieri principle was used for volume fractions analysis. Stereological examination revealed 55% acinar epitelium and 45% connective tissue in both control and placebo groups, as well as 60% acinar epitelium and 40% connective tissue in the treated group. Prenatally applied diclofenac sodium did not cause a statistically significant change in the prostate stroma-parenchymal ratio in 20-week old rats compared to the control animals (p>0.05). © 2013 OMU.Article Torg Ratio in Normal Ageing Population: No Risk of Stenosis(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2021) Koyun, N.; Gökalp, M.A.Canal/body or Torg’s ratio has been agreed as a reliable method to detect cervical spinal stenosis. Age changes of cervical canal diameter and the ratio have been seldom analyzed in the cohort of normal adults. Our objective is to undertake the age changes in decades from healthy young to the elderly subjects. Sagittal diameter (SD) of the spinal canal and anteroposterior diameter of the vertebral body (VB) were taken on the lateral cervical radiographs consisting of normal appearance from 104 males and 102 females. SD showed significant gender differences and insignificant age changes. VB changed with age significantly in both sex, and showed sex difference. Torg ratio was found above 0.9 and changed with age. The ratio also indicated no difference between sexes. The male/female difference declared previously might not be a consistent finding. The present study suggested that bone cervical canal might diminish in normal ageing persons without existence of the cervical stenosis and/or risk of myelopathy. Our findings might be peculiar to our subject group, which need to be confirmed by the further studies. © 2021, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. All rights reserved.
