Article The Effect of the Stay-At Policy on Ophthalmology Outpatient Clinic Applications During the Covid-19 Pandemic: a Comparative Study(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2021) Gedik, A.C.; Ozer, M.D.To report the effects of the stay-at-home policy on requests for ophthalmology outpatient clinic visits at a secondary care hospital during the COVID-19 outbreak. March 11, 2020, was the date on which the first confirmed coronavirus case was reported in Turkey and was there fore selected as the boundary date in the design of this study. All applications with urgent and non-urgent complaints were made to a secondary care hospital during the two months duration during the pandemic curfew period in 2020 and the same date interval in 2019 (March 11, 2019 – May 11, 2019) were examined retrospectively using the hospital’s automation system. Of the patients who participated in the study, 7.6% (n = 512) were aged between 0 and 18 years, 62.2% (n = 4190) were between 18 and 65 years. The number/ratio of patients who visited the hospital during the pandemic period between the ages of 0–18 years and 65 years and older were found to be statistically significantly lower than the non-pandemic period (P < 0.001). The rate of patients who applied to the hospital during the pandemic period with an urgent eye complaint was statistically significantly higher than that of the non-pandemic period (P < 0.001; odds ratio = 3.7). The spectrum of ophthalmic conditions that led individuals to request ophthalmology outpatient clinic visits was similar during both periods; however, certain age groups showed decreased application rates during the pandemic period. All rights reserved.Article Relationship Between Ocular Pseudoexfoliation and Sensorineural Hearing Loss(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2021) Tekin, S.; Batur, M.; Düzenli, U.; Seven, E.; Ozer, M.D.The purpose of this study is to evaluate the air and bone conductance rates in audiogram between healthy individuals and the patients having pseudoexfoliation (PEX). Patients with evidence of ocular PEX and controls were included in the study. Air conduction hearing thresholds (minimal perceptible sounds) were determined at frequencies of 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000, 6000, 8000 Hz and bone conduction hearing thresholds were determined at frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000, 4000 Hz for each ear. At these frequencies, air and bone conductance rates in audiogram were measured for patients with PEX and control group to analyze the relation between conductance rates and PEX cases. 86 participants were enrolled in this case-control study, in which 40 of them having PEX. The acquired results showed that the PEX group displayed significantly higher hearing tresholds in air conductance compared with control subjects a t frequencies of 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000 Hz, but not at frequencies of 6000, 8000 Hz. Similar results were obtained in bone conduction thresholds as well, in terms of the tendency of decreasing significance level between the groups in higher frequencies. In our study, we have shown that there is a statistically significant sensorineural hearing loss in PEX patients comparing age control subjects. These findings are more significant in lower frequencies, and the significance level is decreased toward the higher frequencies. Based on these findings, we speculate that endolymphatic pressure increase could have a role in the pathogenesis of PEX related sensorineural hearing loss. © 2021, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi.
