Book Part Are Nigella Sativa and Urtica Dioica Fixed Oils Effective on Carbon Tetrachloride-Induced Liver Injury Model in Rats(Studium Press Llc, 2008) Ozbek, Hanefi; Ozturk, Mustafa; Erdogan, Ender; Kosem, MustafaEffectiveness of Nigella sativa and Urtica dioica. in prevention of carbon tetrachloride-induced liver injury were investigated in this study. Sprague-Dawley rats were given carbon tetrachloride dissolved in olive oil intraperitoneally three times a week for 11 weeks. After liver fibrosis was developed, carbon tetrachloride was discontinued and rats were randomized in four groups. They were treated with Nigella sativa fixed oil (2 ml/kg), Urtica dioica fixed oil (2 ml/kg) or Nigella sativa (2 ml/kg) and Urtica dioica (2 ml/kg) per orally for four weeks. The control group was untreated. The animals were sacrificed and specimens were taken for biochemical and histopathological study at the end. Cessation of carbon tetrachloride allowed for partial recovery of liver tissue by autoregeneration in control group. Liver fibrosis was further progressed in all three treatment groups and resulted in cirrhosis in some animals. In Urtica dioica group alanine aminotransferase level was significantly higher compared to other groups. Serum indirect bilirubin levels were higher in Urtica dioica and Nigella sativa groups compared to control and Nigella sativa+Urtica dioica groups. Present study indicate that fixed oils of Nigella sativa, Urtica dioica and Nigella sativa +Urtica dioica did not show a therapeutic effect in experimental liver fibrosis in rats.Article Association of Acromegaly and Multiple Myeloma: a Case Report(Galenos Yayincilik, 2013) Atmaca, Murat; Yildiz, Saliha; Kalan, Isilay; Ozbay, Mehmet Fatih; Seven, Ismet; Ozturk, MustafaMalignancy is an important cause of mortality in acromegaly. Hematological malignancies are very rare in acromegaly. Here, we report an 80-yearold patient with acromegaly and multiple myeloma. Patient died within a month of diagnosis. Previous studies have shown that growth hormone and somatomedin-C activate B lymphocyte and somatomedin-C receptors are found in multiple myeloma cells. Possible effects of growth hormone and somatomedin-C on multiple myeloma progression are discussed in the light of the relevant literature.Article Coexistence of Chronic Renal Failure, Hashimoto Thyroiditis and Idiopathic Hypoparathyroidism: a Rare Case Report(informa Healthcare, 2014) Yildiz, Saliha; Soyoral, Yasemin; Demirkiran, Davut; Ozturk, MustafaHypoparathyroidism is an uncommon disease and its coexistence with chronic renal failure is quite rare. Hypocalcemia and hyperphosphatemia are seen in both diseases. Diagnosis of hypoparathyroidism may be overlooked when parathormone response is not evaluated in patients with chronic renal failure. A 19-year-old female patient who had been receiving hemodialysis for 3 years because of chronic renal failure was diagnosed as idiopathic hypoparathyroidism and hashimoto thyroiditis. When her medical records on the first admission and medical history were evaluated, hypoparathyroidism and hashimoto thyroiditis were seen to be present also when she was started hemodialysis. Idiopathic hypoparathyroidism should be suspected in case as absence of parathormone response to hypocalcemia in patients with chronic renal failure. We investigated the relative importance of glycation of collagen types I and IV, laminin and fibronectin in DNP-related impairment in peripheral nerve regeneration. Dorsal root ganglia (DRGs) from young adult mice were embedded in collagen type I modified by 10% substitution with normal or glycated forms of the proteins and incubated for 3 days. Outgrowth of axons and migration of cells into the ECM were quantified. Mean length of growing axons was significantly reduced by glycation of laminin and collagen type IV. The sum of lengths of all axons from each DRG was greatly reduced with glycated laminin, collagen types IV and I. Glycation of fibronectin had no effect on axonal growth. The number of migrating cells was not affected by glycation. We conclude that non-enzymatic glycation of laminin and collagen types IV and I (in decreasing order) impairs peripheral nerve regeneration in vitro.Book Part Investigation on Median Lethal Dose (Ld50) and Hypoglycemic Effect of Thymus Fallax F. Leaves Essential Oil(Studium Press Llc, 2009) Ozbek, Hanefi; Ozturk, Mustafa; Ozgoce, FevziWe aimed to investigate median lethal dose (LD50) and hypoglycemic effect of Thymus fallax F. leaves essential oil (TF) on healthy and diabetic mice. TF, glibenclamide (as a reference group) and isotonic saline solution (ISS) (control group) were administrated to the healthy and alloxan-induced diabetic mice. Blood samples were drawn from the vena coccygea of mice before treatment and in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 24th hour for measurement of glucose levels. When compared with ISS group TF decreased blood glucose values significantly in diabetic mice in the second hour. Glibenclamide decreased blood glucose values significantly in the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 24th hour. There was no significant difference of blood glucose values among groups of healthy mice. The median lethal dose (LD50) of the TF was determined at 0.741 mL/kg.Article Mesterolone Treatment of Aging Male Syndrome Improves Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms(Pakistan Medical Assoc, 2014) Dugeroglu, Harun; Ozturk, Mustafa; Atmaca, Murat; Seven, IsmetObjective: To investigate the effects of mesterolone on prostate in patients treated for aging male syndrome. Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted from June to September, 2009, at endocrinology and metabolism department of Yuzuncu Yil University, Van, Turkey, and comprised patients with symptoms of aging male syndrome and/or low testosterone. They were given mesterolone 50mg/day per oral for two months. Aging Male Symptoms and International Prostate Symptom Score questionaires and prostate-related quality of life scores were completed and prostate ultrasonography (USG) was performed before and after the treatment. Total testosterone, free testosterone, gonadotropins, estradiol, prolactin, sex-hormone binding globulin, as well as total and free prostate-specific antigen were also studied. Results: Of the 34 patients in the study, 22(64.70%) had their prostate volume increased, while 12(35.29%) had it decreased. The change, however, was not statistically significant (p<0.098). Mesterolone significantly improved Aging Male Symptoms, International Prostate Symptom and prostate-related quality of life scores (p<0.001). These improvements though significant were independent of the changes in prostate volume. Total testosterone, sex-hormone binding globulin andestradiol decreased, while free testosterone showed no change (p<0.002, p<0.001, p<0.024, p<0.337). The fraction of free testosterone increased (p<0.001), while total and free prostate-specific antigen did not change (p<0.368 and p<0.841) Conclusion: Mesterolone proved to be a safe alternative in the treatment of Aging Male Syndrome. It also improved lower urinary tract symptoms and prostate-related quality of life.Article Relationship Between Serum Dheas and Oxidative Stress Levels of Body Mass Index in Healthy Postmenopausal Women(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2016) Goy, Burhan; Atmaca, Murat; Aslan, Mehmet; Ucler, Rifki; Alay, Murat; Seven, Ismet; Ozturk, MustafaObjectives: Menopause is a natural step in the process of aging. Postmenopausal women have decreased levels of antioxidants and increased oxidative stress, the latter of which plays an important role in atherogenesis. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship of the body mass index (BMI) with serum catalase activity, malondialdehyde (MDA), and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) levels in healthy postmenopausal women and estimate whether the MDA/DHEAS ratio is a possible marker of oxidative stress for determining cardiovascular risk in these women. Methods: We investigated serum catalase activity, MDA, and DHEAS levels, parity history, age, and BMI in 96 healthy postmenopausal women aged 50-82 years. The serum MDA levels and catalase activity were measured spectrophotometrically. The serum DHEAS levels were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The ratio percentage of the serum DHEAS levels to serum MDA levels was designated as a biomarker for oxidative stress. Results: The mean BMI of the patients was 31.72 +/- 6.16 kg/m(2) (range = 20.5-47.94). The MDA/DHEAS ratio was significantly decreased in patients with a BMI over 30 compared to that of patients with a BMI between 25 and 30 (P = 0.025). Moreover, BMI was positively correlated with serum DHEAS levels (r = 0.285, P < 0.01) and negatively correlated with the MDA/DHEAS ratio (r = -0.241, P < 0.05) in postmenopausal women. Furthermore, BMI was observed to be a potential predictor of the MDA/DHEAS ratio based on covariance analysis (P = 0.039). Conclusions: Our results indicate that healthy, obese, postmenopausal women have a decreased MDA/DHEAS ratio. Additionally, BMI was observed to be a potential predictor of the MDA/DHEAS ratio.Article Remission of Cushing's Disease With Growth Hormone Replacement(Churchill Livingstone, 2011) Ozturk, Mustafa; Atmaca, MuratTreatment of Cushing's disease is often challenging. The success rates are not satisfactory and therapeutic interventions frequently causes hypopituitarism. We present three cases of remitting Cushing's disease complicated with growth hormone deficiency. Surprisingly, growth hormone replacement resulted in complete clinical and laboratory remission of Cushing's disease in these patients. However, one of the patients died of myocardial infarction. Besides the hormones of calcium metabolism , locally produced factors are important in maintaining normal bone metabolism. Interleukin-6 (IL-6), in particular, has a major influence on bone turnover. In this study, serum IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) levels, as well as bone turnover markers and relationships between them, were investigated in hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. A total of 20 female patients with hyperthyroidism, 15 with subclinical hyperthyroidism, 16 with hypothyroidism, and 15 with subclinical hypothyroidism constituted the patient groups. In all, 15 age-matched healthy female volunteers were recruited as controls. When compared with controls, serum TNF-a levels showed no significant difference in any of the patient groups (P >.05). In the groups with hyperthyroidism and subclinical hyperthyroidism, IL-6 levels were significantly higher compared with control group values (P <.05). Hyperthyroid patients showed higher levels of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and osteocalcin, and a higher urinary deoxypyridinoline/creatinine ratio, compared with controls (P <.05). In subclinical hyperthyroidism, only ALP was found to be higher compared with control values. No significant correlations were made in any group between serum IL-6 or TNF-a level and bone turnover markers. Results suggest that serum IL-6 level and markers of bone turnover rate seem to be increased in hyperthyroidism. KursadBackground/Aims: The aim of this study is to observe the relationship between the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), microvascular density (MVD) and the pathological characteristics of gastric carcinoma. Methodology: A total of 87 cases of gastric carcinomas were examined by immunohistochemical staining, using anti-VEGF and anti-CD34 antibodies. 62 out of 87 cases (71.2%). The MVD was 64.00 +/- 15.51 (mean SE) in VEGF-positive group and 48.33 +/- 12.71 in VEGF-negative group. Conclusions: The expression of VEGF is correlated with tumor angiogenesis, and VEGF plays an important role in new blood vessels formation. The expression of VEGF and MVD were closely correlated with the degree of differentiation and lymphatic metastasis, but not related to depth of cancer invasion, size of tumor, age or sex. Results: VEGF positive staining was obtained in 62 out of 87 cases (71.2%). The MVD was 64.00 +/- 15.51 (mean SE) in VEGF-positive group and 48.33 +/- 12.71 in VEGF-negative group. The expression of VEGF and MVD were closely correlated with the degree of differentiation and lymphatic metastasis, but not related to depth of cancer invasion, size of tumor, age or sex.Article Subrnandibular and Thyroid Gland Involvement of Hydatid Cysts: a Very Rare Association With Percutaneous Treatment(Turkish Soc Radiology, 2010) Avcu, Serhat; Unal, Ozkan; Kotan, Cetin; Ozturk, Mustafa; Ozen, OzkanA 48-year-old man who had a complaint of swelling in the left submandibular region and right side of the neck was referred to our radiology clinic for sonographic examination that revealed a type 1 hydatid cyst with a diameter of 32 mm in the left submandibular gland, and a type 3 hydatid cyst with a diameter of 33 mm in the right thyroid gland. The diagnosis was verified by computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and hemagglutination tests. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second case in the literature of hydatid cysts involving both submandibular and thyroid glands. There was no abdominal, thoracic or brain involvement. The patient was a singer and did not accept surgical treatment, and percutaneous drainage with the PAIR (Puncture-Aspiration of cyst contents-Injection of hypertonic saline solution-Reaspiration) technique was performed for both cysts. There were no complications during or after the intervention. During 4 months of follow up the sizes of both cysts were decreased and the germinative membranes were shrunken, having a pseudotumor appearance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case in the literature that the PAIR method was applied for thyroid and submandibular gland hydatid cysts. Percutaneous treatment of thyroid and submandibular gland hydatid cysts seems to be a safe and effective procedure as a possible alternative to surgery.
