Article A Comparison of Scale on Profitability of Dairy Cattle Farms in Eastern Part of Turkey(Medwell online, 2009) Sahin, KasimThe main objective of this study, was to determine the profitability of dairy operations in the province of Van (A province in eastern part of Turkey). A total of 117 dairy farmers were interview and data were collected about their operations. Dairy operations were divided into 3 groups based on their size, namely small, mid and large. All of data belongs to year 2007. The average cow per farm was 6.59. The daily milk yield per cow was 5.79 kg, overall, the average lactation period was 281.85 days for farms and yearly milk production per cow was 1630.9 kg. Total assets per farm were $ 16789, gross production value per farm was $ 8824 and per cow was $ 1339. Overall, gross profit per farm was $ 1863.1 and net profit per farm was $ 393 for farms. Overall, profitability rate was 2.2% for farms and increased in proportion to dairy cattle farm size. The total production elasticities of inputs were 0.851 indicating that there were decreasing return to scale for dairy cattle farms.Article The Effects of Subsidizing Forage Production on Animal Production in Van, Turkey(Medwell online, 2009) Sahin, Kasim; Yilmaz, Ibrahim HakkiIn last 5 years, government of Turkey (ministry of agriculture) is subsidizing forages cultivation, therefore forage cultivated area and forage production is increasing continuously in Van. That forage production is also affecting stock breeding positively. However, there is a lack of information on amount of forage production and increases on animal product in the region. The data belonged to 2007 production period and were collected from 441 forage producing farmers face to face by means of questionnaires. Forage production area in each farm was 2.51 ha, which were mainly alfalfa (2.09 ha), sanfoin (0.36 ha), vetch (0.01 ha) and silage corn (0.04 ha). Average cow number in each farm was 11.82 (5.28 dairy and 6.54 fattening cattles) and average sheep number was 46.66. Forages produced in each farm were used to feed animal in same farm. Produced forages just met 81.40% of requirement of farms. Concentrate feeds are provided from feed-milling companies. Forage production increased 2.21 folds within last 5 years. However, numbers of dairy cows and sheep increased only 23 and 18%, respectively. Even though there was a considerable amount of increase in forage production with subsidies, this increase was not seen in animal production. Thus, it can be said that subsidizing forage production did not adequately met the goal.Article A Research on Forages Cultivation, Rangeland Usage and Socio-Economical Structure of Van Province(Ankara Univ, Fac Agr, 2008) Sahin, Kasim; Yilmaz, I. HakkiThis study was conducted to determine cultivation of forage plants and usage of ranges in Van. We interviewed with 122 forage plants producer in Van and its three administrative where forage plants cultivated commonly. Dates were collected by asking questionnaire to people living in villages in 2007. Average population in each farm was 10.02. Average age of interviewed peoples was 40.40 year, their average education period was 8.16 year, and their average agricultural experience was 22.86 year. Forage production area in each farm was 29.38 decar, its 20.67 decar was alfalfa and its 8.71 decar was sainfoin. Average cattle number in each farm was determined as 4.61 (BBHB) and average sheep and goat number was determined as 36.08. Forage plants produced in each farm were used to feed animal in same farm. Besides, hays were bought from outside in some feeding period. Concentrate feeds are provided from administrative or Van city. Straw is the most used hay in farms for animal feeding and alfalfa, sainfoin, meadow hays follows it, respectively. 76.22 percent of farmers stated that animals graze on rangelands. It was also determined that animals start to graze on rangelands in April (78.49 %), and it lasts in December (65.59 %).Article A Research on Forages Production and Problems in Gurpinar District of Van(Ankara Univ, Fac Agr, 2008) Sahin, Kasim; Yilmaz, I. HakkiThe purpose of thsis research was to determine production and problems of forages grown in Gurpinar district of Van. Eighty-seven forage producers were interviewed at Gurpinar district of Van province where forages are being produced intensively. The data belong to 2006 production period and were collected by means of questionnaires interviewing with persons in village. On these farms, the average population per farm was 6.74 people. The average farmer's age were 42.67 years old and had 23.49 years of farm production experience in overall farms. The average farm size was 52.05 decare. About 60.25% of the total land is irrigated and the remaining 39.75% is dry land. In 2006, 26.87 decare average land was planted with forages which are mainly alfalfa (20.14 da), sainfoin (5.34 da) and silage corn (1.39 da). The average cow, sheep and goat per farm was 2.05, 35.82 and 8.70, respectively. The main problems of forage production in region are lack of forage cultivation information such as, irrigation methods, usage of certified seed, and government related programmers (forage encourage programme). Also, they do not have enough tool and equipment for forage cultivation. Therefore, farmers should be trained on the topics of forage cultivation. Also, if villagers establish a cooperative, they can get tools and equipment easily. In the region, development on dairy and fattening cow breeding are depend on forage production. Therefore, forage production in the region should be more encouraged, especially, alfalfa, sainfoin, and silage corn production,
