Article An Assessment of the Urban Water Footprint and Blue Water Scarcity: a Case Study for Van (Turkey)(Instituto Internacional de Ecologia, 2022) Yerli, C.; Sahin, U.Today, most of the world’s population faces water scarcity, while global warming, urbanization, industrialization and population increases continue to increase the severity of the pressure on water resources. Management of water resources plays a key role in the sustainability of agricultural production. The water footprint (WF) is different in comparison to other water statistics because it takes direct and indirect water consumption into account, and helps in the management of water resources. Within this context, the WF of Van province, which is Turkey’s most easterly located arid region, was calculated from 2004 to 2019. The study area covers lake Van, which is Turkey’s largest lake, and the Van basin with an area of 23.334 km2 and a population of 1.136.757 (2019). In the calculations, crop (WFcrop ), livestock (WFlivestock ), and domestic and industrial water footprints (WFdomestic+industrial ) were evaluated separately, and blue and green water footprints (WFblue and WFgreen ) were analyzed in detail. According to the results, the average WF of Van province was found to be 8.73 billion m3 year-1. Throughout the province, 87.6% of the WF is composed of WFcrop, 4.9% is WFlivestock and 7.5% is WFdomestic+industrial . Of the WFcrop, 62.5% depends on WFblue, i.e., freshwater. Most of the WFlivestock consisted of dairy cattle (49%) and sheep (38%). The average WFdomestic+industrial for 2004 to 2019 was 0.64 billion m3 year-1. The average per capita water footprint of Van province was found to be 889.9 m3 year-1 capita-1. In addition, the province is classified as severe water scarcity (257%). This study is one of the first province-based calculations of WF in Turkey and is the first study to bring a different aspect to published literature by including residual soil moisture from the winter months. As a result of this study, the WFblue of the WFcrop is above the worldwide average and should be reduced by changing the crop pattern or synchronizing the planting and harvest dates of the crops to a period that benefits from precipitation. Moreover, high altitude climatic conditions can significantly influence plant physiology. Therefore, a two year field study was conducted to determine the effects of different irrigation quantities on plant growth (leaf number, stem diameter, plant diameter and height), marketable yield, water use and crop quality attributes (mineral content, total phenolics and antioxidant activity) of drip-irrigated lettuce in a semi-arid region with a high altitude. A randomized complete block design was used for testing of different irrigation quantities replicated three times. Different irrigation quantities were adjusted considering 100 (I1), 85 (I2) and 70% (I3) of evaporated water from a Class A pan. Lettuce evapotranspiration was the highest in the I1 treatment (214.1 mm) considering the two year average values. Therefore, the I1 treatment provided the maximum growth and marketable yield (2.17 kg m-2). Water use efficiency was also the highest in the I1 treatment (10.2 kg m-3) because the lettuce yield decreased significantly with the decreasing irrigation quantity. However, total phenolic content and antioxidant activity in lettuce leaves were the highest in the I3 treatment. Moreover, I2 and I3 treatments provided higher mineral contents. While the potassium content in leaves was the most abundant among macro minerals (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, and Na), manganese content was the highest among micro minerals (Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn, and B). It could be said that lettuce can be irrigated with less irrigation quantities for obtaining higher mineral contents, total phenolic contents and antioxidant activity. With the use of wastewater, which is one of the marginal water resources, the pressure on freshwater resources is alleviated, the discharge problems of wastewater are solved, and soil and crop productivity increase with the high nutritive effect of wastewater. However, salinity, heavy metals, some harmful chemicals, and the pathogen risks of wastewater should not be ignored. In this context, in this study, the effluent of the wastewater treatment plant located in the central Edremit district of Van province was evaluated in terms of usability in irrigation. Samples were taken from treated wastewater during the vegetation period in 2020 and 2021 and pH, EC, cation and anions, micro elements and heavy metal, total nitrogen and phosphorus, total suspended solids, chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, fecal coliform, percent sodium, sodium adsorption rate, residual sodium carbonate and Langelier saturation index were determined by analysis and calculations. As a result of the study, the treated wastewater does not pose a risk in terms of pH, EC, cation and anions, micro elements and heavy metal, total suspended solids, percent sodium, sodium adsorption rate, residual sodium carbonate, langelier saturation index and fecal coliform, but attention should be paid to the total nitrogen and phosphorus, chemical and biological oxygen demand contents. It was concluded that the treated wastewater is in compliance with national and international standards, and there is no harm in its use in irrigation and thus treated wastewater can be recommended as a reliable water source for irrigation in the semi-arid province of Van/Edremit. However, in order to ensure safe and sustainable management in irrigation with wastewater, it is necessary to monitor water quality and make necessary inspections of soil, crop and irrigation systems. © 2022, Centenary University. All rights reserved.Article Treatment Options in Primary Mediastinal B Cell Lymphoma Patients, Retrospective Multicentric Analysis; a Turkish Oncology Group Study(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2023) Acar, R.; Paydaş, S.; Yildirim, M.; Kiliçarslan, E.; Sahin, U.; Dogan, A.; Karadurmus, N.Introduction and Aim: Primary mediastinal B-cell lymphomas (PMBL) are aggressive B- cell lymphomas. Although the initial treatment models vary in PMBL, appropriate treatment methods are not known. We aim to show real-life data on health outcomes in adult patients with PMBL who received various type of chemoimmunotherapies in Turkey. Method: We analyzed the data of 61 patients who received treatments for PMBL from 2010 to 2020. The overall response rate (ORR), overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) of the patients were evaluated. Results: 61 patients were observed in this study. The mean age of the study group was 38.4 ± 13.5 years. From among them, 49.2% of the patients were female (n = 30). For first-line therapy, 33 of them had received rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone (R-CHOP) regimen (54%). Twenty-five patients had received rituximab, etoposide, prednisone, vincristine, cyclophosphamide and doxorubicin (DA-EPOCH-R) regimen. The ORR was 77%. The median OS and PFS were as follows: 25 months (95% CI: 20.4-29.4) and 13 months (95% CI: 8.6-17.3), respectively. The OS and PFS at 12 months were 91.3% and 50%, respectively. The OS and PFS at five years were 64.9% and 36.7%, respectively. Median follow-up time period was 20 months (IQR 8.5-38.5). Conclusion: R-CHOP and DA-EPOCH-R showed good results in PMBL. These remain one of the best determined systemic treatment options for first-line therapy.
