Letter Association of Parasomnias and Dyssomnias (Multiple Letters)(American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 2004) Ng, D.K.; Leung, L.C.; Chan, C.-H.; Agargun, M.Y.; Selvi, Y.Article Characteristics of Patients With Nocturnal Dissociative Disorders(2001) Aǧargün, M.Y.; Kara, H.; Özer, O.A.; Semiz, U.; Selvi, Y.; Kiran, U.; Tombul, T.Frequency of nocturnal dissociative episodes (NDE) in patients with dissociative disorders (DD) was determined and clinical characteristics of patients with nocturnal dissociative disorders was compared with those DD only. Extensive overnight polysomnographic monitoring with nocturnal video-polysomnography was performed in 8 patients with NDE and 21 patients with DD only. We found a 27.5% prevalence of NDE in patients with DD. A clear transition from one personality to another was observed during sleep in 2 (about 7%) patients. Hallucinations, self-mutilating behaviors during sleep, and violent behavior during sleep were more common in the patients with NDE. Sleep may facilitate the transition from one personality to the other one. Patients with DD may use dissociation as a defense mechanism during sleep.Article The Cyberchondria Severity Scale (Css): Validity and Reliability Study of the Turkish Version(Kure Iletisim Grubu A.S., 2018) Selvi, Y.; Turan, S.G.; Sayin, A.A.; Boysan, M.; Kandeger, A.Objective: Even though the internet is a valuable resource for medical information, it has the potential to increase anxiety, fear or obsessive-compulsive behaviours, particularly among individuals more prone to health related anxiety. Researchers have found that health anxiety, hypochondria, and online health searches are associated with increased anxious symptomatology. The aim of this study is to investigate the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Cyberchondria Severity Scale, a measure of online health anxiety. Method: Three hundred thirty-seven university students with an age range of 16-55 were included in the study. The Cyberchondria Severity Scale (CSS), Internet Addiction Test (IAT), Anxiety Sensitivity Inventory-3 (ASI-3), and Health Anxiety Inventory (HAI) were administered to participants. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis revealed that five-factor solution best fit to the data. The overall and subscales of the CSS had excellent internal consistency (Cronbach α = 0.91, for the overall measure, and Cronbach α values ranged from 0.78 to 0.87), with an exception of 'mistruct of medical professional' subscale (Cronbach α = 0.64). The total and subscales of the CSS had generally good convergent validity. Conclusion: The CSS is a newly developed screening tool to assess online health anxiety, and present study demonstrated that the Turkish version of the scale had promising psychometric properties. © 2017 Springer Verlag. Method: The sample comprised AMI patients who had been admitted to the coronary care unit. The patients were grouped into two categories; the asleep-AMI group consisted of 36 patients who had the onset of symptoms of AMI during sleep, and the awake-AMI group included 183 patients who had AMI while they were awake. The sleep quality and dream anxiety for the 1-month interval before AMI were assessed with Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Van Dream Anxiety Scale (VDAS), respectively. Results: Asleep-AMI patients reported significantly poorer subjective sleep quality, significantly higher global PSQI scores, and displayed significantly higher nightmare frequency, difficulty in falling asleep after a nightmare, higher autonomic hyperactivity, dream recall frequency, daytime anxiety, psychological problems, and higher global dream anxiety scores than awake-AMI patients. Conclusion: The present study suggests that sleep anxiety and related emotions are associated with AMI during sleep. © 2011 The Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine.Conference Object The Effect of Alexithymia on Somatization and Sleep Quality in Major Depressive Patients(Cambridge Univ Press, 2012) Aydin, A.; Ozdemir, P. The objective of our present study is to examine the relation between hormonal values, which are known for being related to the effects of these said changes determined in the mood, dissociation and thought suppression in healthy individuals after one night of sleep deprivation implementation. Methods: One night sleep deprivation was performed on a total of thirty- two healthy volunteers (16 males and 16 females) who were included in the study. Blood samples were taken from the individuals before and after sleep deprivation implementation in order to determine cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEA-S) and Thyroid Functions’ Levels tests. In order to evaluate the effects of the sleep deprivation on moods, “White Bear Suppression Inventory (WBSI)” has been conducted, with an aim of evaluating thought suppression, “Profile of Mood States (POMS)”, “Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES)” with a purpose of realizing any dissociation tendency. Results: On the individuals who have been implemented for sleep deprivation, a decrease on depression and vigor-activity sub-scales values was detected, and an increase was determined on fatigue sub-scales values of “POMS”. While the values of DES were found to have been statistically increased after sleep deprivation, also a significant decrease was determined on WBSI values. Even if there hasn’t been any significant statistical change determined on cortisol levels after sleep deprivation, yet there had been some significant changes detected on Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), fT3, fT4, and DHEA-S levels. Decrease in “POMS” depression sub-scale values and increase on fatigue sub-scale values were determined on the individuals whose sT4 levels were found to be increased significantly in statistic manner after the sleep deprivation. Conclusion: According to the results of our study, sleep deprivation for one night was determined to cause decrease on depressive mood, increase on dissociative symptoms and to lower the tendency of suppressing the unwanted thoughts, consciously. The fact of being obtained lower depression values, on the individuals with the increased DHEA-S levels after the sleep deprivation meets with the information claiming that the high DHEA-S levels may be deemed as protectors against the negative effects of the stress. © 2015 by Turkish Association of Neuropsychiatry.Article The Evaluation of Dream Anxiety and Sleep Quality in Hemodialysis Patients(Kure Iletisim Grubu A.S., 2017) Selvi, Y.; Ozdemir, P.G.; Soyoral, Y.; Tasdemir, M.; Aslan, M.Sleep problems are prevalent in hemodialysis patients. Although several studies have investigated the sleep quality and its causes in hemodialysis patients, there is no report available on dream anxiety in hemodialysis patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the sleep quality and dream anxiety in hemodialysis patients. We also investigated related factors which influence sleep quality and dream anxiety. Fifty-Two hemodialysis patients and 38 healthy individuals were included in the present study. The sleep quality and dream anxiety were assessed with Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Van Dream Anxiety Scale (VDAS); respectively. The majority of hemodialysis patients had poor sleep quality (%92.3) in our study. Hemodialysis patients had significantly longer sleep latency, higher sleep disturbances and daytime dysfunction than healthy individuals. Hemodialysis patients had higher global dream anxiety scores than healthy individuals. There was a negative relationship between hemoglobin levels and Global VDAS score. Global PSQI score was negative correlated with serum creatinine and phosphorus levels, while positive correlated with C-reactive protein levels. Our results suggest that hemodialysis patients had poor sleep quality, higher sleep disturbances and daytime dysfunction compared with healthy subjects. Moreover, we demonstrated that dream anxiety was significantly higher in hemodialysis patients.Conference Object Evaluation of Submucous Resection Without Turbinectomy on Subjective Sleep Quality, Daytime and Dream Anxiety in Patients With Nasal Septal Deviation: a Prospective, Single-Blind, Consecutive Trial(Cambridge Univ Press, 2013) Gulec, T. D.Objective: To investigate the regional metabolite abnormalities and changes after treatment in patients with OCD with autogenous and reactive obsessions. Method: We assessed right anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and amygdala-hippocampal region (Am + Hpp) N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA), choline (Cho) and creatine (Cr) concentrations and NAA/Cr and Cho/Cr ratios using single-voxel proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in 15 patients with autogenous obsessions (OCD-A), 15 patients with reactive obsessions (OCD-R) and 15 healthy controls (HC). Measurements were repeated after 16 weeks of fluoxetine treatment. Results: Baseline ACC NAA/Cr ratios of both OCD groups were significantly lower than HC. OCD-A group had significantly lower baseline NAA/Cr ratios in the Am + Hpp than other groups. These differences were more likely to be explained by higher Cr levels in ACC. We found no significant differences and changes for Cho levels and Cho/Cr ratios between groups and within groups. Significant increase in NAA/Cr ratios of OCD-A group found in the Am + Hpp was more likely to be explained by increased NAA levels. No significant changes were found in ACC NAA/Cr ratios. Conclusion: While disturbed energy metabolism in ACC might reflect a common pathology in patients with OCD regardless of symptom dimension, alterations in mesiotemporal lobe are more likely for autogenous obsessions.Conference Object Noise Pollution, Psychiatric Symptoms and Quality of Life: Noise Problem in the East Region of Turkey(Cambridge Univ Press, 2012) Akan, Z.; Yilmaz, A.; Ozdemir, O.; Selvi, Y.; Korpinar, M. Guzel; Boysan, M.; Selvi, Y.; Yildirim, A.; Yilmaz, E.Article Sleep-Related Violence, Dissociative Experiences, and Childhood Traumatic Events(2002) Agargun, M.Y.; Kara, H.; Özer, Ö.A.; Kiran, Ü.; Selvi, Y.; Kiran, S.The aim of the present study was to test whether a relationship between dissociative experiences and violent behavior during sleep (VBS). The group was composed of 253 male and 129 female undergraduate students. The subjects were interviewed for parasomnias and sleep-related violence by using International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD)-revised criteria. Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) was also administered to the subjects. The subjects with sleep-related violence had higher mean DES score than those never reported VBS. The subjects with sleep-related violence had higher rates of history of physical abuse than the others. Suicidal attempts and self-mutilating behaviors were also more common among these subjects than the others. There is an association between sleep-related violence, childhood abuse, and dissociative experiences. Dissociative experiences may relate not only to daytime symptoms but also symptoms during sleep.Conference Object Socio-Demographic and Clinical Risk Factors on the Non-Recovery of the Major Depressive Disorder: a 52-Week Follow-Up Study(Cambridge Univ Press, 2012) Gulec, M.; Selvi, Y.; Boysan, M.; Aydin, A.; Besiroglu, L.; Agargun, M. Y.Article Study of Validity and Reliability of the Turkish Version of the Core Bereavement Items(2011) Selvi, Y.; Öztürk, R.I.; Aǧargün, M.Y.; Beşiroǧlu, L.; Cilli, A.S.Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the Core Bereavement Items (CBI) that assess the intensities of the bereavement reaction of bereaved individuals. Methods: The study involved 50 bereaved subjects who had lost a loved one through death within the past two months and 50 unbereaved subjects who had not experience such a loss within the past 5 years or more prior to the test. Internal consistency and homogeneity were tested by the Cronbach's and Pearson's correlation coefficients. The student's t-test and Pearson's correlation coefficient were used for rest-retest reliability. Validity was assessed with the student's t-test in independent groups. Results: Psychometric analyses showed that the Turkish version of the CBI had a high internal consistency (α=0.94). As for internal consistency, the · ranged between 0.46 and 0.87 for each item. The items of the CBI discriminated the bereaved group from the unbereaved group, except for items 4, 8, 9, 10. Conclusion: The Turkish version of the CBI has appropriate reliability and validity for assessing the intensity of bereavement. © Archives of Neuropsychiatry.Article Turkish Version of Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (Meq)(2007) Agargun, M.Y.; Cilli, A.S.; Boysan, M.; Selvi, Y.; Gulec, M.; Kara, H.The purpose of this study was to provide validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Morningness-Eeveningness Questionnaire (MEQ). The Turkish version of the scale was administered to the 171 healthy participants (87 men and 84 women) twice in different times. The internal consistency of the each question and total scores of the scale was examined by carrying out Cronbach's alpha statistic and Pearson correlation analysis. The test-retest reliability of the total MEQ scores was researched by applying dependent sample t-test and Pearson correlation analysis in two different application times. The reliability was satisfactory (Cronbach's alpha=0.81). Points of the questions were found significantly and positively correlated with the total point. There is not a significant change in two different application times. Internal consistency of the Turkish version was found high in the present study. The scale is adequate to distinguish "morning" and "evening" types in Turkish population.
