Article Clinical and Laboratory Findings of Paediatric Patients With Brucellosis(Galenos Yayincilik, 2021) Karaman, Serap; Bitkin, Eda Celebi; Sonmez, Bulent; Basaranoglu, Murat; Karaman, Kamuran; Tuncer, OguzObjective: Brucellosis is the most common bacterial zoonotic disease transmitted via unpasteurised milk and dairy products from infected animals. This study aimed to evaluate paediatric patients treated for brucellosis and followed for 2 years. Materials and Methods: The records of 73 patients with childhood brucellosis who had undergone treatment and follow-up for 2 years were retrospectively evaluated. Results: The patient age ranged from 1 to 14 years, with 39 boys (53%) and 34 girls (47%). Fever (94%) was the first common symptom. Other symptoms, in the order of frequency, were myalgia (80%), arthralgia (75%), fatigue (38%) and anorexia (33%). Complications included sacroiliitis (12%), hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (4%), epididymo-orchitis (1.3%), focal abscess (1.3 %) and meningitis (1.3%). Splenomegaly, hepatomegaly and lymphadenopathy (24%, 33% and 5%, respectively) were also reported. Moreover, 18% of the patients had hepatosplenomegaly at initial admission. Dermatological involvement revealed maculopapular rash in 4.1% and petechial rash in 9.6% of patients. Body weight loss was observed in 14% of the cases. In addition, 76.3% and 23.7% of the patients had acute and sub-acute forms, respectively. Conclusion: Brucellosis can display several different clinical presentations. This diversity can lead to diagnostic delay. In settlements where the disease is common, patients with fever and joint pain should be treated early and the disease should be ruled out.Article Hemiplegic Migraine: a Case Report(Galenos Yayincilik, 2010) Yilmaz, Cahide; Sonmez, Bulent; Basaranoglu, Murat; Kaya, Avni; Acikgoz, Mehmet; Caksen, HueseyinThe girl patient aged twelve had been brought to the hospital having weakness at her left side. Most of the pediatric cases are ileocecal. Isolated small bowel intussusception accounts for fewer than 10% of all pediatric cases. We reported a previously healthy 3-year-old child who presented with multiple ileo-ileal intussusceptions. Preoperatively, diagnosis made by ultrasonography. During surgery, edematous and dilated small bowel loops with four intussusceptions were found. Ileocecal junction was normal. Our experience shows that the rare entity of multiple intussusceptions with no obviously causative agent may present in pediatric patients.Article Prevalence, Demographic Characteristics and Associated Risk Factors of Malnutrition Among 0-5 Aged Children: a Cross-Sectional Study From Van, Eastern Turkey(Mdpi, 2016) Kizilyildiz, Baran Serdar; Sonmez, Bulent; Karaman, Kamuran; Beger, Burhan; Mercen, Adnan; Alioglu, Suleyman; Cesur, YasarMalnutrition in childhood is a dramatic indicator of poor socio-economical status worldwide. To recognize and reveal the socio-demographic features is crucial, especially for developing countries. Our aim was to investigate the prevalence and association with sociodemographic variables of malnutrition in 0-5 years old children in Van, Turkey. A total of 702 children are included in this cross-sectional study. Demographic features of subject including age, gender. family characteristics and other data were obtained. Nutritional assessment was done using anthropometric indices including weight for age, height forage, weight-for-height, head circumference and body mass index-for-age. Multivariate logistic regressions were carried out to assess malnutrition -associated factors. Prevalence of underweight, stunting and wasting were 19.7, 17.7 and 16.2%, respectively. Socio-demographic variables that statistical significantly in association with malnutrition were low monthly family income educational level and employment status of father, parental consanguinity, number of pregnancies, regular intake of vitamin D and history, of prematurity The prevalence of children with head circumference-z score S-2SD and body mass index forage 2SD were 9.8 and 16.3%. respectively. Multivariate analysis detected following risk factors for these indices: low monthly family income, history of prematurity, unemployed father and the period between pregnancies (12 years). We found that prevalence of malnutrition in the city of Van, was still higher than more developed regions of Turkey. The associated risk factors of malnutrition should be specifically interpreted by health professionals and also by government authorities that are responsible for making practical politics of public health.
