Article Allelopathic Effects of Plants Extracts on Physiological and Cytological Processes During Maize Seed Germination(Allelopathy Journal, 2008) Turker, M.; Battal, P.; Agar, G.; Gulluce, M.; Sahin, F.; Erez, M. E.; Yildirim, N.The methanol extracts (3.3, 5.6 and 10.0%) of Berberis vulgaris L., Mentha longfolia (L) Huds., Salvia limbata C.A. Mey., Artemisia absinthium L., Achillea biebersteinii Afan., Origanum vulgare L., Medicago sativa L., Vicia cracea (Desf.) B. Fedtsch were applied to maize (Zea mays L.) seeds to determine their effects on radical, plumule growth, contents of phytohormones [giberellic acid equivalents (GAs), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), trans-zeatin (t-Z) and abscisic acid (ABA)], carbohydrates (glucose, fructose and sucrose), fatty acids, (palmitic acid and oleic acid), mitotic index and chromosome abnormalities as compared to control. The 5.0 and 10.0 % extracts inhibited the germination. The extracts also decreased the length of plumule and radicals. However, there were variable effects on plant hormones, fatty acids and sugar levels. Plant extracts decreased the mitotic index and also caused abnormalities in chromosomes.Conference Object Braf Gene Mutations and Prognostic Significance of Clinical Findings in Castleman Disease(Ferrata Storti Foundation, 2016) Turker, M.; Subari, S.; Keklik, M.; Dal, M. Cultivars(Bangladesh Botanical Society, 2015) Ozdemir, F.A.; Turker, M.; Khawar, K.M.Lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) is an annual pulse legume crop of immense economic importance. This study reports use of 16 lentil cultivars' shoot tips, internode, hypocotyl, cotyledon and root explants cultured on MS medium containing 3 mg/l BAP-0.5 mg/l 2,4-D or 0.25 mg/l IBA for shoot regeneration. The results showed maximum shoot regeneration from cv. Yesil 21 on internode explants on 3mg/l BAP-0.5 mg/l 2,4-D. Best shoot regeneration on MS medium containing 0.25 mg/l IBA was noted on internode explants of cv. Seyran 96. In general shoot regeneration on 0.25 mg/l IBA was better compared to 3mg/l BAP and 0.5 mg/l2,4-D. Well developed shoots from all cultivars regenerated on both types of culture media were rooted on MS medium containing 0.19 mg/l NAA. A system to regenerate lentil is established that will help in easy genetic transformation in future.Article Health Attributes of Ethnic Vegetables Consumed in the Eastern Anatolia Region of Turkey: Antioxidant and Enzyme-Inhibitory Properties(Elsevier B.V., 2016) Dalar, A.; Uzun, Y.; Turker, M.; Mukemre, M.; Konczak, I.Background Four ethnic vegetables from the Eastern Anatolia region of Turkey, Malva neglecta Wallr., Plantago lanceolata L., Cichorium intybus L. and Eryngium bornmuelleri Nab. are commonly used by the local population for food preparation. This study aimed at understanding their potential health attributes. Methods Hydrophilic extracts obtained from roots, stems, leaves and flowers were evaluated for their antioxidant capacities [total phenolics (TP), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assays] and suppression of two isolated key enzymes relevant to metabolic syndrome: α-glucosidase and pancreatic lipase. Phytochemical composition of extracts was investigated by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Results The evaluated extracts exhibited pronounced antioxidant capacities, comparable to those of common spices and herbs, and effectively suppressed the activities of isolated α-glucosidase and pancreatic lipase enzymes. These activities correlated well with total phenolics contents. Plantago lanceolata was an effective inhibitor of α-glucosidase and C. intybus of pancreatic lipase enzyme. High performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry analyses revealed the dominance of luteolin glycosides in P. lanceolata. The same compound was present in C. intybus, where it was accompanied by significant amounts of cichoric, chlorogenic and caftaric acid. Malva neglecta and E. bornmuelleri contained the lowest levels of phenolic compounds and exhibited the lowest antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory activities. Conclusions Among the investigated ethnic vegetables, P. lanceolata and C. intybus represent a valuable source of antioxidant phytochemicals of phenolic nature that modulated in vitro the activities of digestive enzymes. These ethnic food sources diversify diet and enhance health attributes of foods. © 2016 Korea Food Research Institute
