Article The Association Between Exocrine Pancreatic Dysfunction and Insulin Resistance in an Insulin-Resistant Population in Turkey: a Cross-Sectional Study(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2023) Yildiz, S.; Sonmez, G. M.; Komuroglu, A. U.; Alay, M.Background:In insulin resistance (IR), it is thought that pancreatic fat accumulation may decrease pancreatic volume, cause an impaired endocrine function, and simultaneously lead to an exocrine dysfunction before diabetes develops. Aim:The association between pancreatic exocrine function and insulin resistance (IR) was assessed in a population with insulin resistance. Method:This was a descriptive cross-sectional study that included 43 IR cases with no other comorbid diseases or pregnancy and 41 healthy controls. Fasting blood adiponectin, leptin, pancreatic amylase, lipase, and stool fecal elastase-1 (FE-1) were studied and compared in both groups. Results:The IR group consisted of 38 females (88.3%) and five males (11.6%), while the control group consisted of 31 females (75.6%) and ten males (24.3%). FE-1 levels were significantly lower in the IR group (P-value <0.01). Blood glucose, insulin, and HbA1c levels were significantly higher in the IR group than in the control (P-value of <0.01, <0.01, <0.01, respectively). Leptin levels were significantly higher in the IR group compared to the controls (P-value = 0.013). After dividing the whole group (n: 84) into two groups as FE-1 <200 & mu;g/g (n: 61) and FE-1 & GE;200 & mu;g/g (n: 23), logistic regression analysis was performed; the significant predictor of low FE-1 was HOMA-IR (ODD ratio: 4.27, P-value <0.01, 95% confidence interval for ODD ratio: 1.95-9.30). Conclusion:This study showed that IR is associated with pancreatic exocrine dysfunction.Article Effects of Ensiling Forage Turnip (Brassica Rapa) Plant Harvested in Different Vegetation Periods With Triticale (X Triticosecale Wittmack) Forage at Different Ratios on Silage Quality, in Vitro Digestibility and Energy Content(Pakistan Agricultural Scientists Forum, 2023) Yildiz, S.; Deniz, S.; Ozkan, F.; Kale, C.This study determined silage quality, in vitro digestibility and energy contents in forage turnip (Brassica rapa L.) harvested in three different vegetation periods, and it was used without (control) or with 10, 20, 30, 40% triticale (X Triticosecale Wittmack). As the vegetation period progressed, the dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) contents increased, and the crude ash (CA), crude protein (CP) and ether extract (EE) contents decreased (p<0.05). The effects of the triticale ratio on the parameters between the groups were significant (p<0.05) except for ADF. As this ratio increased, the DM, CA and NDF contents of the silages increased, their OM levels decreased, and there was no change in CP, EE and ADF. As the vegetation period progressed, the lactic acid (LA) and acetic acid (AA) contents of the silages decreased, and their Fleig scores increased (p<0.05). The effects of triticale ratio on the parameters were significant except for propionic acid (PA) (p<0.05). As the vegetation period progressed, the dry matter digestibility (DMD), organic matter digestibility (OMD) and energy values of the silages decreased (p<0.05). In comparison to the control, the highest DMD, OMD and energy levels were found with triticale added at 20%. If forage turnip is ensiled with triticale forage at ratios of 10% to 30%, the obtained silages are quality silages, and can be used as an alternative, quality source of roughage in the ruminants feeding.Article Evaluatıon of Neutrophıl-To Ratıo and Mean Platelet Volume in Patıents With Hyperthyroıdısm(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2020) Alay, M.; Sönmez, G.M.; Yildiz, S.Both Lymphocytes and platelets play an important role in the pathogenesis of Graves' disease (GD), a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease. The mean platelet volume (MPV), which is considered as an indirect indicator of platelet function, may be increased as an inflammatory marker in GD. The aim of this study is to prove that the autoimmune, chronic inflammatory pathogenesis of GD can be demonstrated by evaluating the whole blood count parameters A total of 75 patients of which 41 were diagnosed as GD and 34 were diagnosed as TNG were included in the study. Complete blood count parameters were evaluated in both groups before treatment and after treatment when euthyroidism was achieved. In GD group, pretreatment MPV values were significantly higher than TNG group (p: 0.021). There was a statistically significant decrease in NLR in GD group compared to TNG group after treatment (p: 0,025). Although there was no statistically significant difference, lymphocyte count was higher in GD group compared to TNG group be fore treatment. The monocyte count was significantly higher in the GD group compared to the TNG group before treatment (p: 0.006). There was no correlation between MPV and free T3, free T4, TSH values before and after treatment in GD group. These results suggest that autoimmunity and inflammation in GD are reflected in whole blood count parameters and that MPV elevation in GD is related to autoimmunity rather than the metabolic effect of thyroid hormones. © 2020, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. Forage turnip was harvested at three different stages: the beginning, middle and end of the flowering period, and it was ensiled with no additive (control), 5% molasses or 4% ground barley. In the trial, pH, nutrient contents, ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) contents, volatile fatty acid (VFA) contents, Fleig scores, in vitro digestibility and energy content were determined. It was observed that the effect of the vegetative stage on the difference between the groups was significant (p < 0.05). Accordingly, with the progression of the vegetative stage, the contents of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), ether extract (EE), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) showed an increase while a decrease was observed in crude protein (CP). The effects of the additives on the difference between the groups were found to be significant except for the CP parameter (p < 0.05). Molasses and barley addition to the silages increased DM, OM and EE contents and reduced the levels of NDF and ADF. With the progression of the vegetative stage, lactic acid (LA) and acetic acid (AA) values decreased while pH values and Fleig scores increased. The effects of additives were found to be insignificant for all parameters except for AA and Fleig scores. As the vegetative stage progressed, the dry matter digestibility (DMD), organic matter digestibility (OMD), digestible energy (DE), metabolic energy (ME) and net energy for lactation (NEL) values of the silages decreased significantly (p < 0.05). The addition of molasses or barley, compared to the control, resulted in a significant increase in the levels of DMD, OMD, DE, ME, and NEL (p < 0.05). In conclusion, in parallel with the progression of the vegetative stage, the DMD, OMD, DE, ME, and NEL values of the silages decreased, increasing with the addition of the additives, and the obtained silages were of high-quality as alternative quality roughage in ruminant feeding. © 2022 TUBITAK. The combination of pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine is considered the treatment of choice. These drugs cannot eliminate dormant tissue cysts. The aim of this study is to evaluate the therapeutic effects of Nigella sativa oil, thymoquinone and capsaicin. The study was carried out as two separate experiments. Balb/c mice were injected intraperitoneally with 105 and 103 T. gondii. After 24 hours, treatment was started with different doses of Nigella sativa oil, thymoquinone and capsaicin for 10 days. The effects of these components were evaluated compared to the combination of PYR-SDZ. Mortality and tachyzoite amounts of the mice were calculated for 30 days. In both experiments, the mice in the PYR-SDZ group lived to the fullest. Then the mice in the capsaicin group lived the longest. Since early losses occurred in both experimental groups, tachyzoite count was not performed in groups other than PYR-SDZ. Tachyzoites were not observed in the PYR-SDZ groups after day 10. It was determined that after the PYR-SDZ treatment of toxoplasmosis, capsaicin displayed the highest probability of survival. In conclusion, the combined use of capsaicin and PYR-SDZ can increase life expectancy by reducing the side effects of the drug. © 2023, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. S.; Yildiz, S.Objective: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a highly prevalent breathing disorder in sleep. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between OSAS and prolidase activity, the oxidative stress index (OSI), total antioxidative capacity (TAC), total oxidative capacity (TOC) and the carotid intima media thickness (CIMT). Method: After night polysomnography, 74 people were diagnosed with OSAS and simple snoring. Plasma prolidase activities, TAC and TOC were measured in blood samples taken in the morning after the sleep study. The patients' bilateral common carotid arteries were scanned. Results: In total, 56 patients were in OSAS group [13 subjects 23.2% mild, 19 subjects 33.9% moderate, 24 subjects 42.8% severe] and 18 in simple snoring control group. The mean Prolidase, TOC, TAC and OSI levels were 744.7 +/- 156.8, 59.2 +/- 19.2, 2.12 +/- 0.41, 3.12 +/- 1.03, in the mild OSAS group, 761.6 +/- 114.4, 57.9 +/- 18.3, 2.03 +/- 0.37, 3.15 +/- 0.8, in the moderate OSAS group, 754.08 +/- 133.9, 51.15 +/- 12.1, 1.97 +/- 0.27, 2.8 +/- 0.82, in the severe OSAS group, and 711.9 +/- 139, 52.3 +/- 15.1, 1.83 +/- 0.32, 3.06 +/- 0.92 in the control group, respectively. Mean CIMT measurements were 0.71(+/- 0,13) in the OSAS group and 0.76(+/- 0.07) in the control group. Conclusion: There was no difference between the control and OSAS groups in terms of the parameters studied. Further studies should be undertaken in order to clarify the relation.Article Pantoprazole May Improve Beta Cell Function and Diabetes Mellitus(Springer, 2014) Inci, F.; Atmaca, M.; Ozturk, M.; Yildiz, S.; Koceroglu, R.; Sekeroglu, R.; Kebapcilar, L.Background Proton pump inhibitors induce hypergastrinemia by suppressing gastric acidity. Gastrin has incretin-like stimulating actions on beta cells. Proton pump inhibitors have been shown to decrease glycosylated hemoglobin. Aim We aimed to observe changes in beta cell function in diabetic and non-diabetic subjects given pantoprazole for an acid-related ailment. Methods Seventy-nine male patients (38 non-diabetic and 41 type-2 diabetic receiving only metformin therapy) were followed for 12 weeks after pantoprazole 40 mg/day was given. Fasting plasma glucose, HbA1c, fasting insulin, Pancreatic B cell function (HOMA-B), proinsulin and c-peptide levels were measured before and after the treatment. Results In non-diabetic patients (n = 38), FPG decreased, whereas c-peptide, log-HOMA-B, increased significantly (p = 0.002, p = 0.03, p = 0.042, respectively) after 12 weeks of pantoprazole administration. In type 2 diabetic patients, FPG, HbA1c and weight decreased, whereas log-HOMA-B, c-peptide and log-proinsulin levels increased significantly after pantoprazole treatment (p = 0.003, p = 0.007, p < 0.001; p < 0.001; p = 0.017, p = 0.05, respectively). After pantoprazole treatment, pancreatic B-cell function was correlated with c-peptide and insulin and inversely with FBG and HbA1c levels in the whole group (r = 0.37, p = 0.001; r = 0.60, p < 0.001, r = -0.29, p = 0.011 and r = -0.28, p = 0.013, respectively). After pantoprazole treatment, HbA1c was correlated with FBG (r = 0.75, p < 0.001) and inversely with only log-HOMA-B level (r = -0.28, p = 0.013). Conclusions Pantoprazole administration seems to correlate with increased beta cell function. Pantoprazole administration improves HbA1c, HOMA-B, c-peptide and proinsulin levels. Since beta cell loss plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes, PPI-based therapies may be useful in the treatment of diabetes.Article The Relationship Between 25 Hydroxy Vitamin D3 and Thyroid Antibodies With Thyroid Benign-Malign Neoplasms(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2019) Yildiz, S.; Ekinci, O.; Ucler, R.Objective: To study the relationship between vitamin D and thyroid antibodies with thyroid benign-malign neoplasms. Materials and Methods: The vitamin D vitamin and thyroid antibodies of 179 patients who underwent thyroidectomy for thyroid nodule were retrospectively reviewed. Results: The mean age of the patients was 44.97 +/- 14.139. Vitamin D levels were 14.473 +/- 4.9999 ng/ml in women and 19.584 +/- 6.1981 ng/ml in men and the mean was 15.016 +/- 5.3579 ng/ml. There was a significant relationship between sex and vitamin D level (P < 0, 05). Antithyroglobulin antibody (anti-TGB) had been detected in 95 patients and Antithyroid peroxidase antibody (anti TPO) in 58 patients. There was no significant relationship between vitamin D levels (P: 0, 65), anti-TPO positivity (P: 0, 86), and anti-TGB (P: 0, 12) with benign-malignant neoplasm of thyroid. There was no relationship between vitamin D and metastatic disease (P: 0, 30) as well. In addition, no association was found between malignancy and metastasis (P = 0.068, P = 0.14, P: 0, P = 0, respectively) with thyroid antibody positivity (anti TPO and/or anti TGB) in severe deficiency (<10 ng/ml) and deficiency (< 20 ng/ml) of vitamin D. Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency or thyroid autoantibodies did not have any significant effect on thyroid malignancies or metastatic disease separately or together.Article The Relationship Between Calcium Metabolism Parameters(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2019) Yildiz, S.; Öztürk, M.Blood calcium is under very tight control in a narrow range of 8.5-10.5 mg/dl. We aimed to investigate the factors that contributed to this control. 464 females and 254 males aged 16-96 years were examined retrospectively. PTH, 25OH vitamin D, Ca, Mg, P and spot urine calcium, creatinine levels were examined. The rates were as follow; hypercalcemia 5.6%, primary hyperparathyroidism 10.4%, secondary hyperparathyroidism 40.8%, tertiary hyperparathyroidism 17.5%, normal PTH hypercalcemia 1.25%, hypocalcemia 13.5%, hypoparathyroidism 3.7%, hypovitaminosis D 77.6%, hypophosphatemia 6.4%, hyperphosphatemia 17.5%, hypomagnesemia 17.5%, hypermagnesemia 10.4%. Severe vitamin D deficiency was found as 37% (n= 172) in females and 20% (n= 53) in males (p <0.01). Urinary Ca and urine creatinine 25 OH vitamin D cut-off value was 10 ng/ml and it was 13ng/ml for PTH. While vitamin D was 10-20 ng/ml, urine Ca/creatinine ratio was lowest and it increased after 20 ng/ml in females and 30 ng/ml in males. There was a negative correlation with PTH as Ca decreased from 8.3 mg/dl and a positive correlation when it increased above 9.2 mg/ dl. Mg correlated positively with PTH, Ca and P (p= 0.00 r= 0.23, p= 0.007 r= 0.13, p= 0.00 r= 0.21, respectively). Mg was found to be significantly correlated with all parameters and 25 OH vitamin D was not correlated with any parameters. On the other hand, we have determined the threshold values where the parameters interact with each other. © 2019, Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi. Saanen x Hair goat crossbred were used to assess their milk yield and composition with four diets, where corn silage (CS) was substituted with sunflower silage (SS) at amounts of 0, 34, 66 and 100 % of diets, respectively. The concentrations of C18:1 cis-9, C18:2 cis-9, trans-11 (CLA), C18:3n6 and C18:3n:3 fatty acids increased, due to the increase in the content of SS in the diet, and the highest levels of these fatty acids were found in the 100S S group (P<0.05). In conclusion, the roughage source represents an effective strategy for altering the fatty acid composition of goat milk, with evidence that the total mixed ration is an important determinant of ruminal unsaturated fatty acid metabolism in the goat.Article Zooplankton Composition of Van Lake Coastline in Turkey(Academic Journals, 2010) Yildiz, S.; Özgökçe, M.S.; Özgökçe, F.; Karaca, I.; Polat, E.This study was completed with periodical surveys in coastal band of Van Lake between May and September in 2005 to 2006 period.
