Article Adaptation and Stability Analysis in the Selected Lines of Tir Wheat(Pakistan Botanical Soc, 2006) Ulker, M.; Sonmez, F.; Ciftci, V.; Yilmaz, N.; Apak, R.Genotype and environment (G x E) interactions are of major concern to plant breeders in breeding cultivars. The objective of this study was to determine the stability of grain yield in 12 wheat genotypes. Eleven lines selected from Tir wheat population (Triticum aestivum) were used in the study. The experiment was conducted in Van, Ercis, and Adilcevaz located in the eastern part of Turkey in 1997-98 and 1998-99. Two stability parameters were obtained as linear regression coefficient (b) of an entry mean on the average of all entries and deviation from regression (s(2)d), then stability was tested with the hypotheses b = 1.0 and s(2)d = 0. The results indicated that there were significant differences and interactions among genotypes, locations and years. The regression coefficient (b) values of the 11 genotypes used in this study ranged from 0.46 to 1.73; deviation from regression ranged from 69.9 to 2896.7. According to estimates of the two stability parameters, none of the genotypes were stable for grain yield. However, based on the linear regression coefficient and average grain yield, line 2 (Adilcevaz-40/1) and 11 (Van-Edremit/1) appeared to be promising because their yields were above the average in all of the environmental conditions of this study.Article Alström Syndrome Associated With Cerebral Involvement: an Unusual Presentation(TIP ARASTIRMALARI DERNEGI, 2006) Yilmaz, C.; Çaksen, H.; Yilmaz, N.; Güven, A.S.; Arslan, D.; Cesur, Y.Alström syndrome (AS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder, characterized by retinal degeneration, progressive hearing impairment, truncal obesity and non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. A 6-year-old girl was admitted with aphasia, deafness, strabismus, abdominal distention, and weakness on the right body side. The physical and laboratory examination revealed psychomotor retardation, right hemiparesis, sensorioneural hearing loss, aphasia, eye and teeth abnormalities, hyperpigmentation, truncal obesity, hepatosplenomegaly, severe iron deficiency anemia, delayed bone age, and cerebral hemiatrophy. Based on these abnormal findings she was diagnosed as AS. According to our knowledge this is the first case of AS with cerebral involvement. This last finding may be a component of the syndrome.Article Anal Protrusion of Ventriculo-Peritoneal Shunt Catheter: Report of Two Infants(2004) Yilmaz, N.; Kiymaz, N.; Yilmaz, C.; Çaksen, H.; Yuca, S.A.In general, treatment of hydrocephalus requires the application of a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt. Despite the peritoneal cavity being convenient for absorption of cerebrospinal fluid, multiple complications related to the shunt tends to develop within this area. The most frequent complications are abdominal. A rare complication can occurs with perforation of the organs located in peritoneal cavity by the catheter when infection occurs. Here we report two cases (because of unusual presentation) of shunt complication, they were operated for hydrocephalus. Acute traumatic anal protrusion of the peritoneal catheter occurred in the first case while a spontaneous anal protrusion during follow-up period, in the second case. The predisposing factors were thought to be previous abdominal infection and the use of trocar during operation in the first case and chronic irritative effect of the ventriculo-peritoneal catheter in the second case. © 2004, IOS Press. Olfactory, facial and vestibular nerves are the most commonly injured nerves. Optic and oculomotor nerve injuries are less frequently involved, and trigeminal, abducens and lower cranial nerves are rarely involved. The injury may occur in central nervous system or in the lower motor unit. Traumatic bilateral abducens paralysis is a very rare occurrence. It may follows cervical spine trauma and sixth nerve avulsion has been reported to complicate lumbar puncture. In this study, we describe an 11-year-old boy with bilateral abducens paralysis following hematoma in the left ponto-cerebellar angle and hemorrhage in the prepontine cisterns due to head trauma. Such hemorrhages might result in lesions in the supranuclear regions by traction on the nerve due to displacement of the pons and its nucleus as a result of direct pressure. © 2003, IOS Press. S.; Yilmaz, N.; Caksen, H.Article Clinical and Epidemiological Characteristics of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cases in East and Southeastern Region of Turkey: a Multicenter Retrospective Study(Turkiye Klinikleri, 2013) Yalçin, K.; Yakut, M.; Deǧertekin, H.; Türkdoǧan, K.; Harputluoǧlu, M.; Bahçecioǧlu, I.H.; Yilmaz, N.Objective: In this multicenter retrospective study, we aimed to investigate the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients with hepatocellular cancer (HCC) in the Eastern and Southeastern Anatolian regions of Turkey. Material and Methods: This study included 218 patients from 7 centers-Dicle University (n=96), Yüzüncü Yi{dotless}l University (n=30), İnönü University (n=28), Fi{dotless}rat University (n=24), Gaziantep University (n=20), Atatürk University (n=19), and Harran University (n=1) hospitals. Information about patients was obtained through pre-prepared forms. Diagnosis of HCC was made histologically or with a combination of clinical, radiological, and laboratory findings. Results: The mean age of the patients was 57.67±12.03 with a male-to-female ratio of 5.8:1. Etiologically, 45% of the study group had HBV infection alone, 29% had HDV co-infection, 15% had HCV infection and 10% were idiopathic cases with unknown etiology. Cirrhotic background was present in 94% of the patients and 89% of cases had an advanced stage disease according to the Okuda classification. Alpha-fetoprotein levels were over 300 ng/ml in 81% of the patients. Conclusion: Hepatitis B virus infection followed by hepatitis delta virus infections appeared to be the leading etiological factors for HCC cases in our region. HBsAg carriage continues to be an important risk factor for HCC in Turkey. The fact that most of the HCC cases are in the late stages of disease, makes it necessary to use effective diagnosis and treatment methods with efficient screening and monitoring programs in our country. © 2013 by Türkiye Klinikleri.Article Does Pregnancy Induce or Enhances Low Back Pain(2006) Kiymaz, N.; Yilmaz, N.; Zeteroǧlu, Ş.; Yazici, T.Forty-eight pregnant women out of 166 referred to our obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinic due to back pain between February and March 2003 were included in the present study. A questionnaire booklet was prepared for age, weight gain during pregnancy, number of parities, existence of any back pain in their former pregnancies, the start of back pain during pregnancy, physical work conditions and route of previous labour information. These patients were followed for a period of 1.5 years after labour. The factors that influenced back pain in the pregnant patients were: multiparity, former back pain during pregnancy, and weight gain during pregnancy. We determined lumbar discopathy at a ratio of 79.1% using MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) study of the lumbar vertebrae in patients with back pain lasting more than a one year. © 2006 VSP.Article Effect of Methyl Jasmonate on Enzymatic Browning and Antioxidant Enzyme System of Eggplant Fruit (Solanum Melongena L.)(Centenary University, 2020) Yilmaz, N.; Çavuşoğlu, Ş.Eggplant fruit result in significant economic losses, as being non-climacteric is sensitive to chilling injury and short postharvest life. Eggplants were harvested in Gevas district of Van, Turkey. The eggplant fruits were harvested by taking maturity levels into consideration and then placed in foam plates and covered with Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) for 21 days in cold air depots containing 10 and 20 °C temperature and 90-95% relative humidity. The fruits of the same size were divided into 3 different groups. The first group of fruits was immersed in distilled water as a control. The second group of fruits were immersed in 1 μM MeJA solution for 10 minutes. The third group was immersed in 5 μM MeJA solution for 10 minutes. The effect of postharvest Methyl Jasmonate treatment during the storage period on respiratory rate, Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), and malondialdehyde (MDA) were evaluated. The results obtained from this study suggest that 1 µM Methyl Jasmonate application gives the best results in terms of parameters such as respiratory rate, SOD, PPO, and MDA at 20 °C, while 5 µM Methyl Jasmonate was found to be the most positive one in terms of CAT enzyme activity. As a result, it can be suggested that MeJA treatments were effective on antioxidativ enzymes and respiration rate during the storage period. © 2020, Centenary University. Turkey has an important place in apricot production in the world. The postharvest life of apricot is limited as fresh fruit. In the study, Bebeko apricot variety was used, the fruits were grown in Van ecological conditions and harvested at harvesting maturity. In the current study, we investigated the effect of Methyl Jasmonate (0.2 mM), cytokinin (5 ppm), lavender oil (1000 ppm), MeJA (0.2 mM) + lavender oil (1000 ppm) and cytokinin (5 ppm) + lavender oil (1000 ppm) on apricot quality parameters such as pH, titratable acidity (TA), soluble solids content (SSC), skin color, antioxidant capacity, total phenolics, respiration rate and ethylene production as well as determined how long the treatments applied to apricot increase storage period. Our findings suggest that the treatments applied to fruit have a beneficial impact on fruit quality comparing to untreated fruit. As a result, MeJA+Lavander oil treated fruit was found to maintain the quality of the product for 35 days; on the other hand, other treatments were found to maintain the quality of the product for 25 days. © 2020, Centenary University. F.; Caksen, H.The aetiology of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) remains to be fully elucidated, although it follows infection with a hypermutant defective M-protein measles virus. This study analysed peripheral blood lymphocyte subgroups to determine their role in the pathophysiology of SSPE. It included 22 children with SSPE aged 2 - 15 years (patient group) and 22 age- and gender-matched healthy children (control group). In children < 6 years old, there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in the proportions of lymphocytes expressing the surface markers CD3, CD8, CD19 or CD16/56, or in CD4/CD8 ratio. The proportion of CD4(+) lymphocytes in SSPE patients < 6 years of age was significantly lower compared with the control group. In children >= 6 years old, there were no significant differences in the lymphocyte subgroups. In conclusion, these findings suggest that a low CD4(+) lymphocyte count might be responsible for SSPE in younger children.Article Extra-Axial Subarachnoid Ependymoma Mimicking a Pca Schwannoma(Turkish Neurosurgical Society, 2005) Yilmaz, N.; Kiymaz, N.; Mumcu, Ç.; Bayram, I.The presentation, diagnosis, and treatment are described for a patient with an ependymoma involving the left cerebellopontine angle (PCA). A 34-year-old woman had left facial paralysis, hearing loss and headache in 8 months. Computerized tomography (CT) revealed a mass lesion of the left PCA which was enhanced homogeneously. Magnetic resonance imaging also (MRI) showed the mass in the left PCA which was high-intense on T1-weighted images, iso- and high-intense on T2-weighted images and homogeneously enhanced by administration of Gd-DTPA. The patient was operated on and the tumor was totally removed. Histopathological examination of the specimen revealed a typical ependymoma. The postoperative course was uneventful with complete resolution of the symptoms on admission. We present here an unusual case of PCA ependymoma located within the PCA and exhibiting no continuity with the ventricular systems. The radiological and clinical features of the tumour mimicked a PCA schwannoma.Article A Giant Cervical Osteochondroma(TIP ARASTIRMALARI DERNEGI, 2005) Kiymaz, N.; Doǧan, A.; Yilmaz, N.; Mumcu, Ç.A giant solitary osteochondroma in 17-year-old-boy was reported. Osteocondromas usually involves the long bones, scapulae, pelvic bones and seldom occurs in the axial skeleton. A 17-year-old boy presented with a swelling at the rear of the neck and an advanced degree of limitation in the movements of his neck. A hard mass sized approximately 7x8 cm was revealed in this region. Cervical x-ray and CT revealed the mass involving the sixth cervical vertebrae. Giant cervical osteochondroma operated and the mass was successfully excised. Osteochondromas that consists the largest portion of benign bone tumors at the spine is seldom. Therefore we are introducing a osteochondroma case located at the lower cervical region where an advance degree of limitation in neck movements that displays no any neurological symptoms and that reaches a very wide mass in size, and which is assumed as unusual.Article Intracranial Hemorrhage Due To Vitamin K Deficiency in Infants: a Clinical Study(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2009) Yilmaz, C.; Yuca, S. A.; Yilmaz, N.; Bektas, M. S.; Caksen, H.The hospital records of 30 infants with a diagnosis of intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) due to late onset of vitamin K deficiency, seen during a 5-year period (2001-2005) were retrospectively evaluated. Signs and symptoms of the patients were convulsions (80%), poor sucking (50%), irritability (40%), vomiting (47%), acute diarrhea (33%), and fever (40%). On physical examination there were bulging or full fontanel in 19 patients (63%), collapsed fontanel in one (3%), diminished or absent neonatal reflexes in 11 (37%), pallor in 14 (47%), and cyanosis in one (3%) patient. Gastrointestinal disorder, skin hemorrhagic findings, and epistaxis each were noted in two (7%) patients. All the infants had prolonged prothrombin time (PT) and seven had prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), both of which were corrected by the administration of vitamin K. All the infants had ICH, with the most common being intraparenchymal hemorrhage, followed by multiple type ICH (27%). Neurosurgical intervention was performed in five patients (17%). The overall case fatality rate was 33%. In conclusion, we would like to stress that ICH due to vitamin K deficiency in infants is still an important health problem in Turkey resulting in high mortality rate.Article Microvascular Decompression Treatment of Trigeminal Neuralgia(TIP ARASTIRMALARI DERNEGI, 2005) Yilmaz, N.; Akdemir, G.; Akbay, Y.; Aslantürk, Y.; Ergüngör, F.Aim: To evaluated 20 trigeminal neuralgia patients who were resistant to medical treatments underwent surgery between years 1997-2000 in our clinic. Methods: The surgical procedure was microvascular decompression with lateral suboccipital approach. Surgical results and complications were compared to other techniques with review of the literature. Twenty patients with a mean age of 55 underwent surgery, 12(12%) of them were female and 8(40%) of them were male. Results: Pain was on the left side in 11(55%) and on the right side in 9(45%) patients. Diagnosis of the trigeminal neuralgia was based on the followings: Response to carbamazepine treatment, analysis of the pain with a detailed history, neurological examination and radiological evaluation. 8 patients had a history of hypertension and none of the patients in entire group had a known diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. Pain was experienced mostly on V1,V2 and V2,V3. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed to all patients. The etiological factors were estimated as idiopathic or vascular compression in 19, and epidermoid tumor in 1 patient. Patients were operated in semisitting position with a mayfield and lateral suboccipital surgical approach was chosen. Microvascular decompression was applied in 15 patients by using teflon felt and in 4 patients by using goretex. The epidermoid tumor was evacuated in one patient. Superior cerebellar artery was found as the commonest artery that caused entry zone nerve compression. During the postoperative period of 4 months to 3.5 years the 15 (% 75) of the patients were pain-free without any medical treatment; 2(% 10) patients were pain-free on welltolerated medication and mild-pain without medication; 2(% 10) patients had no pain relief; and 1(% 5) patient was pain-free after the operation for more than 1 month followed by the recurrence of pain requiring medical or surgical therapy. Microvascular decompression technique has been suggested superior to alternative methods for its safety and efficacy without recurrence. Conclusion: Our results support the notion that microvascular decompression is the surgical treatment of choice for patients with trigeminal neuralgia who are younger than 70 year-old, have no risk for anesthesia and who are resistant to medical treatments.Article Recurrent Pleomorphic Adenoma of Orbit: Case Report(Turkish Neurosurgical Society, 2005) Yilmaz, N.; Kiymaz, N.; Etlik, Ö.; Mumcu, Ç.; Bayram, I.Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common epithelial tumors of the human lacrimal gland, comprising about 50% of all the tumors. Although malignant transformation is not frequent, intraoperative tumor spill or inadequate resection may be associated with an increase in the recurrence rate of pleomorphic adenoma. Postoperative irradiation following tumor resection appears to decrease the probability of recurrence. In this study, we present a 37-year old woman with recurrent pleomorphic adenoma of the lacrimal gland eight months after the first operation.Article The Relationships Among Grain Yield and Some Yield Components in Tir Wheat(TUBITAK, 1999) Sönmez, F.; Ülker, M.; Yilmaz, N.; Ege, H.; Bürün, B.; Apak, R.Field experiments were conducted in 1994 and 1995 in Van in order to study the relationships between grain yield and yield componets, and the interrelationships among these yield components and other characteristics in Tir wheat. In this research, heading duration, the number of spikes per m2, grain filling period, the number of grain per spike, grain weight, and grain yield were studied. Direct and indirect effects of the yield components (the number of spikes per m2. the number of grain per spike, and grain weight) on grain yield were found by Path coefficient analysis. Direct and indirect effects of other characteristics on these components were also determined. The direct effects, obtained in the Path coefficient analysis, indicated that grain yield depended mainly upon spike number per m2 and secondly upon the grain number per spike. Grain weight showed less influence. On the other hand, duration had a highly negative influence on the grain filling period. At theend of the research, it has been found possible to increase grain yield when spike number per m2 used as a selection criterion in Tir wheat.Article A Research on Determination of Favorable Sowing Methods for Some Bread Wheat Varieties (T. Aestivum Spp.) Under Van Ecological Conditions(1996) Yilmaz, N.; Sepetoǧlu, H.This study was carried out under Van ecological conditions in 1986-87 and 1987-88 vegetation periods. Three bread wheat varieties (305 Yayla, Tir Wheat, 220/39 Kose) was sowing by Tir and normal wheat drill and yield and yield components was determined. The result of this study, according to years the highest yield was different but is was obtained from 305 Yayla variety which was sowing by normal drill. The lowest yield was obtained from 220/39 Köse which was sowing by Tir drill.Article Spontaneous Regression of Herniated Lumbar Intervertebral Disc(2006) Yilmaz, N.; Kaya, A.; Ozgocmen, S.; Kiris, A.; Kocakoc, E.The aim of this report is to describe the very rare condition, spontaneous regression of herniated lumbar intervertebral disc, and the results of clinical follow-up and imaging modalities. A 53-year-old housewife presented with a 1-month history of low back and right leg pain. She had severe pain in her right leg radiating from the buttock to the heel and weakness of the right foot plantar flexion (rated 4/5 by manual motor testing), and straight-leg raising test was positive at 45° on the right side. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a large para-median extruded intervertebral disc at the L5-S1 level. She was followed up with medical treatments and physiotherapy and rehabilitation intervention. Follow-up MRI after 18 months since initial presentation revealed that extruded intervertebral disc material was completely resolved. In conclusion, the regression of the disc correlated with clinical improvement and was illustrated in follow-up magnetic resonance imaging. The exact mechanism underlying this condition is still unclear. As in our case, extruded lumbar intervertebral disc herniations may spontaneously regress and non-surgical conservative treatments may be appropriate. © 2006 Asia Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology.Article Surgical Treatment of Craniocervical Decompression Without Chiari Malformation in Syringomyelia(2005) Yilmaz, N.; Kiymaz, N.; Mumcu, Ç.We aimed to describe a patient without Chiari malformation who was treated via craniocervical decompression and by creating cisterna manga with an autologous fascia graft, and who displayed a clinical and radiological improvement in the post-operative period. Syringomyelia is a chronic and progressive disease with cavitation and gliosis in the spinal cord. It is more common in adulthood and often involves the cervical region. Due to the fact that craniocervical decompression therapy is successful in syringomyelia with Chiari malformation, this surgical treatment is currently controversial in syringomyelia without Chiari malformation. A 33-year-old male applied to our clinic with numbness and weakness in his left hand that had lasted for 2 years, but his condition had worsened in recent months, with neck pain before over previous the 8 months and a walking disturbance that had appeared 7 months before. Syringomyelia was found between the C2 and T8 vertebrae levels on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. The patient was diagnosed with syringomyelia and underwent suboccipital decompression. Cisterna magna was created by duraplasty with a fascia lata graft. Consequently, craniocervical decompression might be accepted as a treatment method of choice in patients with syringomyelia without Chiari malformation.Article Traditional Practices About Breastfeeding: Istanbul and Van Sampling(Dokuz Eylul University, 2023) Sari, E.; Tandoğan, Ö.; Güngör Satilmiş, İ.; Yilmaz, N.Background: Having knowledge about traditional practices that significantly affect maternal and infant health is essential. Objectives: This study was carried out to determine the traditional practices of mothers regarding breastfeeding in two cities with different sociocultural structures. Methods: The sample of this comparative-descriptive study, consisted of 336 mothers who were breastfeeding or had previous breastfeeding experience in Van (171) and Istanbul (165). The data were collected by face-to-face interviews using an introductory information form and Infant Nutrition Attitude Scale (IIFAS). Results: The majority of the participants were pregnant (Istanbul 7.3%, Van 22.8%) and lactating mothers (Istanbul 40%, Van 38.6%). In both provinces, most of the participants reported to receive information about breastfeeding (77.6% in Istanbul, 63.2% in Van) (p>.05). In both provinces, dates were licked before breast milk (Istanbul 61.8%, Van 75.4%), and tar was applied to breasts to end breastfeeding (Istanbul 83%, Van 94.2%). In Istanbul, apricot compote was given to increase breast milk (58.8%) and the breast was washed with carbonated water (45.5%) to treat breast problems. However, in Van, bulgur rice was given to increase breast milk (61.4%) and onions were applied to breasts to treat breast problems (28.7%). The mean BBTS scores in Van was higher than in Istanbul (p=.000). Conclusion: Although the rate of traditional practices is low, these practices are still applied and practices to increase breast milk are frequently performed. Mothers should be informed about the detrimental and risk-free aspects of all these procedures. © 2023, Dokuz Eylul University. All rights reserved.
