Article Changes in Erythrocyte Parameters of Fluorotic Sheep(int Soc Fluoride Research, 2003) Yur, F; Belge, F; Mert, N; Yörük, IThe aim of this study was to investigate changes in oxidative stress parameters of erythrocytes in twenty 3-4 year-old fluorotic sheep as compared to twenty controls. Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels (mean +/- SD) were significantly elevated in erthyrocytes of the fluorotic sheep (2.51 +/- 0.16 nmol/mL) in comparison to the control sheep (1.32 +/- 0.13 nmol/mL). Erythrocyte Na+-K+ adenosine-5'-triphosphatase (Na+-K+ ATPase) activity in the fluorotic sheep (0.003 +/- 0.0005 mumol Pi/mg protein/h) was significantly lower than in the controls (0.005 +/- 0.0005 mumol Pi/mg protein/h), as was the activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) (510 +/- 23.30 mU/g Hb) compared to the controls (1418 +/- 85.40 mU/g Hb). The results are explained by fluoride-induced oxidative stress reflected in elevated erythrocyte MDA levels that cause decreased enzyme activity of Na+-K+ ATPase and G6PD by affecting membrane structure.Article Effects of Gestation and Lactation on Lipid Peroxidation and Antioxidant System in Sheep(indian veterinary Journal, 2003) Yur, F; Dede, S; Deger, Y; Mert, NPregnancy is accompanied by increased energy demands of many body systems. Production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is proportional to the rate of oxygen consumption. Therefore, a concomitant increase in the activity of antioxidants during pregnancy could be expected (Mover-Lev and Ar., 1997). Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a major breakdown product split off from lipid peroxides (Mihailovic et al., 2000). The antioxidant systems protect the cells against lipid peroxidation which is the basis of many pathologic processes (Bray and Bettger, 1990). Superoxide dismutase (SOD) are metalloenzyme, and important initial component in the cellular defense against oxygen toxicity (Fridovich, 1986). Glutathione peroxides (GPx) are enzymes that catalyze the reduction of organic hydroperoxides or hydrogen peroxide by glutathione (Knapen, 2000). Antioxidant vitamins like E, C and A protect the cells from damage against free oxygen radicals. The present study examined the level of MDA and antioxidative substances such as SOD, GPx, GSH, vit E, C, beta-carotene, retinol, during the gestation and, lactation period of sheep.Article Investigation of Relationship Between Glutathione and Birth Weight and Live Weight Gain in Lambs(Scientific Technical Research Council Turkey, 1998) Bildik, A; Yur, F; Çamas, H; Odabasioglu, F; Aslan, MThis study was carried out to investigate the glutathione level in Morkaraman, Morkaraman x Dorsetdown (F1) and Morkaraman x Corriedale (F1) lambs and to demonstrate its relationship with birth-weight and live-weight gain. Fourtyone Morkaraman, 36 Morkaraman x Dorsetdown, 30 Morkaraman x Corriedale lambs were used as animal materials. Blood samples obtained from the animals were analysed by using spectrophotometric technique for the level of glutathione. In Morkaraman, Morkaraman x Dorsetdown and Morkaraman x Corriedale lambs, GSH(h) levels were 17.7+/-1.1, 19.9+/-0.9, 18.6+/-1.7 mg/dl respectivels and GSH(H) levels were 40.3+/-2.2, 36.2+/-1.9, 31.1+/-0.9 mg/di respectively. Relationship between birth-weight and GSH level of Morkaraman and Morkaraman x Corriedale was statistically significant (p<0.001). There was also statistically important relationship (p<0.05) between GSH level and live-weight gain in Morkaraman x Corriedale lambs.Article Investigation of Relationship Between Transferrin and Birth Weight and Live Weight Gain in Lambs(Scientific Technical Research Council Turkey, 1999) Bildik, A; Yur, F; Odabasioglu, F; Çep, S; Çamas, HThe purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the types of transferrin and weight and live-weight gain of Morkaraman, Morkaraman x Dorsetdown, Morkaraman x Corriedale lambs. Sixteen Morkaraman, 17 Morkaraman x Dorsetdown, 14 Morkaraman x Corriedale lambs were used as matirals. Using polyacrilamid gel electrophoresis technique, plasma samples were analysed for transferrin types. Transferrin types were found AA, AB, AM, BM, AD in Morkaraman lame, BS, MD, BE. AB, DD, AD and AE in Morkaraman x Dorsetdown lambs and BB, AB, BM, AM, MM, AA, MD in Morkaraman x Corriedale lambs. The highest gene frequencies were calculated 0.500 for TfA in Morkaraman, 0.324 for TfD Morkaraman x Dorsetdown and 0.500 for TfB in Morkaraman x Corriedale. There was not significant relationship between Tf types and birth weight and live-weight gain.Article A Study of Some Serum Mineral Levels Before and During Pregnancy and During Lactation Period of Sheep and Cattle(Humana Press inc, 2003) Kulcu, R; Yur, FThe purpose of this study was to determine serum Cu, Zn, Mn, K, and Mg levels before and during pregnancy and during the lactation period of sheep and cattle and to determine the relationships between periods. For this purpose, blood samples of 14 healthy, pregnant Brown Swiss cows fed under normal condition and 36 Karakas (Ivesi x Akkaraman) sheep were used. Blood samples were analyzed using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. There were significant differences between before pregnancy and during pregnancy, and during pregnancy and the lactation period for serum Zn concentration; also before pregnancy and during pregnancy, and before pregnancy and the lactation period for serum K concentration in cows (p<0.05). There were significant differences between before pregnancy and the lactation period for serum Cu concentration, and before pregnancy and during pregnancy for serum K concentration; also pregnancy and the lactation period for serum Mg concentration in sheep (p
