Clay Mineralogy Surrounded Area of Lake Van
Abstract
The 22 soil samples of the surrounded area of Lake Van were studied to determine clay mineralogy and their origin. The chemical, X- Ray diffraction and size distribution analysis were carried out. Detailed X- Ray diffraction analysis results from bulk powder samples and heated and etilen glycolated of oriented clay fraction revealed smectite, illite, and chlorite minerals as well as small amount of kaolinite and mixed layered clay minerals. The relationship between the mineralogy of the parent rocks soils developed on and the clay mineralogy of these soils were investigated. Illite-chlorite minerals are inherited mostly from metamorbhic Bitlis-massif rocks, whereas smectite groub minerals are mostly inherited from volcanic rocks and tuff.
