Article Effects of Hyaluronic Acid on Postoperative Adhesion of Tendo Calcaneus Surgery: an Experimental Study in Rats(2002) Tuncay, I.; Ozbek, H.; Atik, B.; Ozen, S.; Akpinar, F.Adhesions are a significant problem after tendon surgery. The effects of hyaluronic acid on adhesion formation of the tendo calcaneus were investigated in this study. Twenty Wistar rats were utilized. Both tendo calcanei were incised transversely, and then repaired. Hyaluronic acid (0.2 cc) was injected into peritendinous tissue on the right side, while the same amount of normal saline was injected to the left side as a control. The animals were sacrificed 40days after the experiment. Both the right and left tendon adhesions were evaluated both macroscopically and microscopically for the presence of adhesions (grading scale 0-4). Throughout the experimental period, there was no difference in range of motion of the ankle between the two groups. Macroscopically, there were fewer adhesions in the experimental group (mean 0.6 ± 0.8) compared to the controls (mean 1.1 ± 0.2). This difference was not statistically significant (p =. 096). Histopathologically, these parameters were similar in both the experimental (mean 1.15 ± 0.98) and the control groups (mean 1.9 ± 1.25). This difference was significant (p =. 043). Hyaluronic acid may be effective for prevention of adhesions in the tendo calcaneus though this effect could not be demonstrated experimentally.Article The Effects of Nicotine on Fracture Healing: an Experimental Study(2002) Agca, M.; Tuncay, I.; Tosun, N.; Akpinar, F.This study is aimed to evaluate treatment research the effects of nicotine on fracture healing. Thirty rats were used. Nicotine was injected subcutaneously at a dosage of 2 mg/kg/day to group A and 4 mg/kg/day to group B. Control group (group C) received 0.5 ml/kg/day saline solution. Three weeks later, transverse fractures were performed on to the left ulnar and radial bones for each animal. Animals were designed to one of two follow-up groups which were euthanized either 2 or 3 weeks. On the 14th day of fracture, randomly chosen five rats from each group of A, B and C were sacrificed. At the 21st day of fracture, same procedure performed for all remaining rats. Both had surgical and histopathological evaluation were performed. Transverse fractures performed on the 21st day of study were confirmed by direct radiograms. One rat died spontaneously before completing the study was therefore excluded from the final analysis. The results indicate that healing process proceeds in each group. There was no significant difference in fracture healing between groups A and B two weeks after the fracture. However, fracture healing was significantly delayed in nicotine treated group comparing to control group. We continue to support the notion that nicotine has a negative effect on fracture healing.Article Tibial Osteomyelitis Following Intraosseous Infusion: a Case Report(2004) Dogan, A.; Irmak, H.; Harman, M.; Ceylan, A.; Akpinar, F.; Tosun, N.Fluids, medications, and blood products can be rapidly administered via intraosseous infusion under emergency conditions, particularly to pediatric patients aged from 0 to 2 years. A five-month-old infant who had been hospitalized with a diagnosis of sepsis developed swelling and hyperemia at the infusion site 10 days after an intraosseous infusion in the right proximal tibia. Physical examination showed a serous discharge from a fistula on the anteromedial side of the right proximal cruris. Plain radiographs demonstrated periosteal reaction in the right tibia and osteolytic areas in the proximal metaphysis. With a diagnosis of acute osteomyelitis, drainage and medullary irrigation were performed and parenteral antibiotic treatment was initiated. Cultures from the surgical site yielded Candida albicans, upon which fluconazole (8 mg/kg) treatment was administered for four weeks. A complete clinical and radiographic improvement was observed at the end of a 12-month follow-up.Article Variations of Abductor Pollicis Longus and Extensor Pollicis Brevis Muscles: Surgical Significance(1998) Aydinlioǧlu, A.; Tosun, N.; Keles, P.; Akpinar, F.; Diyarbakirli, S.To investigate variations of the abductor pollicis longus and the extensor pollicis brevis muscles, an anatomic study was performed on 15 cadaver forearms. Some variations were observed as reported in previous studies. An unusual insertion of the abductor pollicis longus muscle and the extensor pollicis brevis muscle also was encountered during the dissection. Both tendons of these muscles were found to have inserted into the inferior side of the base of the first metcarpal bone together, instead of dorsal side. Our study suggested that the extensor pollicis brevis muscle and the abductor pollicis longus muscle differentiate from a common muscle.
