Master Thesis Mohair Yields, Live Weight, Body Measurements and Relationships Between These Traits in Mohair Goats Raised in Village Farms of Siirt Province(2005) Arslan, Özlem; Bingöl, Y. MehmetABSTRACTMOHAIR YIELDS, LIVE WEIGHT, BODY MEASUREMENTS ANDRELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THESE TRAITS IN MOHAIR GOATSRAISED IN VILLAGE FARMS OF SIIRT PROVINCEARSLAN, ÖzlemMsc., Animal ScienceSupervisor: Assist. Prof. Dr. Mehmet BİNGÖLSeptember 2005, 68 PagesThis study was performed on 120 Angora goats, which were different colorand ages, raised in Şiyavuk settlement belongs to Derinçay village, Şirvan county,Siirt city. In this study, live weight, wither height, body length, hearth depth, hirdgirth, mohair yield, mohair dressing percentage, fineness, length, flexibility andmohair strength, of the angora goats were determined and correlations between thesetraits were investigated.Average live weight was 33.92±0.504 kg. Mean body length, height atwithers, hearth depth and hird girth were 65.20±0.458, 62.23±0.482, 27.98±0.201and 73.91±0.488 cm, respectively. The differences between live weight, height atwithers and hearth depth were significant within color and age groups (P< 0.001).Black colored goats had higher body weight and body measurements than red andwhite colored goats. The correlations between live weight and body measurementswere significant (P<0.05).Mean mohair yield was 1722.29±128.95 g. Mohair yield increased as theage increased, black colored goats had higher mohair yield (2102.24±26.66 g) thanwhite (1582.11±128.50 g) and red (1647.99±123.13 g) colored goats (P<0.05). Amoderate correlation was determined between live weight and mohair yield. It was determined that mohair quality properties changed with regard to theage; average fiber length increased as the age increased, but fineness, flexibility andstrength decreased. No significant relationships between mohair quality traits andbody measurements were determined. In summary, it was concluded that whitecolored mohair goats raised in Siirt province in East Anatolia Region were similar toAngora goats raised in Ankara in Mid Anatolia region in live weight, body structure, mohair yield and quality; black colored goats had similarities to Angora goats in liveweight and body structure but had very low mohair quality.Key words: Angora goat, Body measurements, Mohair yield, Mohair yield,Mohair quality, Correlation, Mohair color.
