Article Analysis of Thyroid Hormones in Newborns with Hypoxic Ischaemic Encephalopathy(Yuzuncu Yil Universitesi Tip Fakultesi, 2025) Aycan, N.; Yurekturk, E.; Başaranoǧlu, M.; Karaman, S.; Demir, D.Ç.; Tuncer, O.Introduction: Thyroid hormone plays an essential role in brain development and fetal, neonatal, and adult brain function and may influence neuronal recovery after hypoxia and traumatic brain injury. We aimed to see whether there is a relationship between the effects of hypoxia at the cellular level and the stages of the disease. Materials and Methods: After ethics committee approval and informing the families, demographic characteristics, laboratory parameters, diffusion MRI images, and TSH and free T4 levels from thyroid function tests on postnatal days 5 and 21 were recorded retrospe ctively in newborns who were hospitalized with the diagnosis of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in the neonatal intensive care unit of our hospital in the last two years. 81 HIE babies over 37 gestational weeks and 50 control babies of the same age participated in the stud y. Sarnat staging was performed according to the patient's clinical status. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between HIE and healthy babies regarding gender, mode of delivery, birth weight, and birth week. According to Sarnat scoring, while healthy infants had lower TSH levels on postnatal day 5 compared t o all types of hypoxic infants, moderate HIE newborns had higher TSH measurements compared with healthy, mild, and severe HIE neonates. fT4 level was statistically significantly higher in moderate HIE babies than in healthy, mild, and severe newborns. Conclusion: We demonstrated that thyroid hormones, known to have significant effects on energy catabolism and central nervous system development, varied over time in HIE infants at various stages. © Content of this journal is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.Article Choledochus Cyst: a Case Report(2011) Kaya, A.; Aktar, F.; Açikgöz, M.; Üstyol, L.; Başaranoǧlu, M.; Arslan, S.The etiologies of choledochus cysts are not exactly known. Its classic triads are abdominal pain, mass in abdominal area and icter. A 2-year-old girl was brought in with temperature, vomiting and abdominal pain complaints. In her physical examination, there was no sensitivity, defense and rebound in the abdomen. There was also no icter in her body. In the laboratory examination aspartate transaminase and alanine aminotransferase were slightly high, gama-glutamyl transferase and alkaline phosphatase also significantly high. Her abdomen ultrasonography showed a dimensionally cystic dilatation with dimensions of 2x1,5 cm and cholecytitis was seen in choledochus proximals. In abdomen computerized tomography a dimensionally 13 mm cystic structure was observed in choledochus distal terminus adjacency associated with choledochus. Our case was orientated to pediatric surgery in terms of follow-up and therapy.Article Multicystic Renal Dysplasia in a Child With Split Hand/Split Foot Malformation(TIP ARASTIRMALARI DERNEGI, 2012) Akgün, C.; Akbayram, S.; Başaranoǧlu, M.; Aktar, F.; Temel, H.; Arslan, S.Split hand/split foot malformation is a human developmental disorder characterized by missing central digits and other distal limb malformations. Multicystic renal dysplasia is the most common cause of an abdominal mass in the new born period and is the most common cystic malformation of the kidney in infancy. Here, we report a case of split hand/split foot malformation with a submucosed cleft palate and multicystic renal dysplasia in one-year old boy.Article Prevalence of Overweight and Obesity in Children and Adolescents in Eastern Turkey(2010) Yuca, S.A.; Yilmaz, C.; Cesur, Y.; Doǧan, M.; Kaya, A.; Başaranoǧlu, M.Objective: The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of overweight and obesity in school children in Eastern Turkey. Methods: This study included 9048 school children aged 6-18 years. The subjects were classified as overweight and obese, according to the International Obesity Task Force. Results: We found prevalence of overweight of 11.1% in the studied population. It was detected that 2.2% of the population in the study was obese; 2.1% of males and 2.3% of females. While the prevalence of obesity was extremely low before 9 ages and after 15, it reached to high values at puberty and just before pubertal period in boys. The prevalence of overweight was higher in girls and reached to peak point at pubertal ages. Generally, the prevalence of obesity and overweight was slightly higher in girls than in boys, although the boys were more obese in prepubertal ages. Conclusion: Overweight and obesity are concerns for children and adolescents in low socio-economic status regions as well. © Journal of Clinical Research in Pediatric Endocrinology.Article Varicella-Associated Purpura Fulminans and Multiple Deep Vein Thromboses: a Case Report(2009) Dogan, M.; Acikgoz, M.; Bora, A.; Başaranoǧlu, M.; Oner, A.F.Varicella-associated purpura fulminans is a rare syndrome associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. General supportive care, heparinization, and plasma infusions are the mainstays of treatment. A patient aged 8 years and 8 months with purpura fulminans and multiple deep vein thromboses after varicella infection because of deficiencies of proteins C and S is presented in this case report.
