A Practical Study on Appropriations and Outlays Allocated in Central Government Budgets for Research and Development Activities
(American-Eurasian Network for Scientific Information, 2015) Korkmaz, M.; Karta, N.
Development, renewal and competitiveness of an institution or an enterprise is dependent on its capability to compete with current market conditions. This capability requires continuous development and especially investments in relevant areas. This case applies to public institutions and organizations, too. This practical study addresses the appropriations and outlays allocated for research and development (R&D) activities for local administrations. The data used in the study were analyzed in consideration of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) data on “central government budget appropriations and outlays on research and development, 2014-2015”. The data acquired from TUIK were analyzed through the E-Views 8.0 software. Factors affecting the R&D investments were determined through regression and correlation analyses. Panel data analysis method was used in the analysis of the data. In consequence of the analysis regarding local administrations, 14 areas were determined for research and development activities. The investments on infrastructure works, housing, green areas, playgrounds and the Internet and information technologies were found to be the highest among these research and development areas. One interesting fact is that the local administrations with close relations with the ruling party have higher R&D budgets while the R&D budgets for other local administrations are very low or nonexistent. Another fact that was found is that the Turkish government is following a very unstable path in this respect, as shown by the fact that the budgets of some international organizations and enterprises allocated for research and development correspond to at least 10% of their general budget and by the comparison of this percentage with the budget allocated for research and development activities in Turkey. © 2015 AENSI Publisher All rights reserved.

An Analysis of Purchasing Power Parity and the Affecting Factors
(American-Eurasian Network for Scientific Information, 2015) Korkmaz, M.; Karta, N.
This study was conducted through the use of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) 2012-2014 statistical data. As purchasing power parity (PPP), the rates of items of goods and services in different countries were defined and analyzed. The research was enriched by correlation analysis, Granger causality test and regression analysis through the use of the E-Views 8.0 software. According to the 2014 results, the average of GDP indices for Turkey was determined to be 53 when the average of GDP indices for 28 member countries of the European Union was 100. Besides, actual individual consumption levels were found to be highly related in the same direction, and the GDP indices of the countries were highly related with the price indices in the same direction. In terms of price levels, a strong relation was detected between the indices of individual countries. Causality was found between actual individual consumption and GDP, and between actual individual consumption and GDP price levels. It was determined that a one-unit increase in actual individual consumption increased GDP by 1.10 units, and a one-unit increase in price level index increased GDP by 1.06 units. In general, with an average of 47%, Turkey lags behind the 28 EU member countries. Besides, it has a parallelism with 3 countries of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), Switzerland, Iceland and Norway and 5 EU candidate countries, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Albania. On the other hand, Turkey has been in a quite good position in terms of individual purchasing power in 2014 and 2015, compared to Greece, one of the EU member countries. © 2015 AENSI Publisher All rights reserved.

An Examination of the Occupational Burnout Levels of Academic Staff
    (American-Eurasian Network for Scientific Information, 2015) Korkmaz, M.; Yücel, A.S.; Karta, N.
In recent years, burnout syndrome has been one of the frequently addressed issues in relation to working life. It can be alleged that burnout is an important issue for the occupation of academics which includes high level of human relations and face-to-face communication. In this respect, this study aimed to determine the occupational burnout levels of academicians and to detect if the burnout levels vary by certain socio-demographic variables (gender, age and educational level). The samples of the study included 830 academic staff members working in private universities located in the provinces of Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara and Bursa. For this purpose, a questionnaire was applied for the determination of participants' burnout levels. The first part of the questionnaire included questions about the demographic characteristics of the participants while the second part included questions to determine their occupational attitudes. PASW 18.0 software was used for the analysis of the data acquired in the research. Reliability coefficient of the measuring tool (Cronbach Alpha) was found to be 0.924. Descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, ANOVA and Regression Analysis were used within the scope of the analysis. In consequence of the study, it was found that the variables about the participants (age, gender, education) differed in many of the sub-dimensions of the scale that was applied for measuring the burnout level. Furthermore, the regression analysis revealed that increases in the age did not cause occupational burnout in the participants, the participants responded less to the people due to their work, they were not pleased and satisfied with their jobs, and they approached positively to the problems they faced in their jobs. Besides, it was found that as the level of education increased, the participants were exhausted by their jobs, they behaved more harshly towards others, their job satisfied them, and they approached more positively towards problems. © 2015 AENSI Publisher All rights reserved.

Effects of 5-Aza on Biological Parameters of Larval Endoparasitoid Apanteles Galleriae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and on Its Host Achoria Grisella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)
(Oxford Univ Press inc, 2007) Uckan, F.; Sengul, S. Hepcorman; Sak, O.; Korkmaz, M.
The effects of 5-Aza-2'-deoxycytidine (5-Aza-dC), an inhibitor of DNA methyltransferase, were assessed on egg-to-adult developmental time, longevity, size, number of offspring produced, and sex ratio of the larval endoparasitoid Apanteles galleriae Wilkinson (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and on egg-to-adult developmental time of the host Achroia grisella F. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). 5-Aza-dC-treated parasitoids required 1-18 d longer than controls to complete development. In contrast, egg-to-adult developmental time of treated A. grisella was not longer than untreated hosts. Adult longevity and size of the parasitoid species decreased because of 5-Aza-dC application. Likewise, the total number of offspring produced by wasps was reduced > 50% in all treatment groups. The sex ratio of adults was in favor of males in 5-Aza-dC-treated groups.
