Article Assessment of Stigmatization and Self-Esteem in Patients With Epilepsy(Academic Press inc Elsevier Science, 2024) Atan, Gulden; Oruc, Fatma Gunduz; Atan, KemalAim: This study was conducted to examine the relationship between stigmatization and self-esteem of patients with epilepsy. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 216 patients at a university hospital in Van, a province in eastern Turkey. The researcher prepared the data collection tools, including a personal information form, Jacoby Stigma Scale and the Rosenberg self-esteem scale, in line with the literature. The Jacoby stigma scale was applied to assess stigma. Data analysis was performed using t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Tukey, LSD coefficient. Results: The mean total stigmatization score of patients with epilepsy was 21.11 +/- 10.00, while the mean total self-esteem score was 20.26 +/- 5.16. The study found a significant negative correlation between stigmatization and self-esteem scores (r = -0.411; p < 0.05). Conclusion: The research study revealed that patient with epilepsy have a high perception of stigma and low selfesteem levels.Article The Interplay Between Self-Esteem and Social Anxiety in Adults with Epilepsy: The Role of Seizure Frequency(Academic Press inc Elsevier Science, 2025) Oruc, Fatma Gunduz; Atan, GuldenObjective: The aim of this study was to determine the self-esteem and social anxiety levels of adult individuals with epilepsy and to examine the moderating effect of seizure frequency on these variables. Method: The study was planned as a descriptive and cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 307 adults with epilepsy living in Van province in eastern Turkey who met the inclusion criteria. Personal information form, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and Social Anxiety Scale Short Form were used to collect the data. Data analysis was performed with SPSS Statistics 27 package program at 95 % confidence level and significance level was accepted as p < 0.05. Results: The mean self-esteem score of the participants was 23.46 +/- 1.71 and the mean social anxiety score was 29.55 +/- 2.21. Self-esteem did not show a significant difference according to sociodemographic and clinical characteristics (p > 0.05). Statistically significant differences were found in social anxiety levels in terms of educational status and occupation (p = 0.001 and p = 0.005). The relationship between seizure frequency and self-esteem had a significant negative predictive effect on social fear and restlessness in new situations (b = -0.497; p = 0.001), while the moderating effect of seizure frequency was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Self-esteem of individuals with epilepsy was found to be high and homogeneously distributed independent of sociodemographic factors such as gender, age, and educational status. Social anxiety levels varied according to educational and occupational status.Article The Relationship Between Caregiver Burden and Life Satisfaction in Caregivers of Individuals With Epilepsy: an Example in Eastern Turkey(Academic Press inc Elsevier Science, 2025) Atan, Gulden; Oruc, Fatma Gunduz; Atan, KemalObjective: This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between caregiver burden and life satisfaction among caregivers of individuals with epilepsy. Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 210 caregivers at a university hospital located in Van, a province in eastern T & uuml;rkiye. A personal information form prepared by the researcher based on literature, along with The Caregiver Burden Scale and Life Satisfaction Scale, was used to collect data. Descriptive statistics including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation were utilized. Kurtosis and Skewness coefficients were used to analyze the normal distribution of the data. The relationships between the dimensions determining the levels of the scales for caregivers were examined using Pearson correlation and linear regression analyses. Additionally, t-tests, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and post hoc analyses (Tukey, LSD) were employed. A significance level of p < 0.05 was accepted. Results: The mean total score for caregiver burden among the participants was found to be 35.433 +/- 11.480. The mean total score for life satisfaction was determined to be 11.386 +/- 2.972. A significant relationship was found between the caregiver burden and life satisfaction scores of the caregivers of individuals with epilepsy participating in the study (r = -0.333; p = 0.000 < 0.05). It was determined that the level of caregiver burden decreases the level of life satisfaction (ss=-0.333). Conclusion: It was determined that relatives of patients with epilepsy experience high levels of caregiver burden. It was also determined that caregiver burden is related to sociodemographic factors such as the caregiver being 41 years of age or older, literate, married, low-income, and the patient's spouse. In the same study, it was also determined that as the total caregiver burden score increased, the total life satisfaction score decreased.Article The Relationship Between Medication Adherence and Complementary Medicine Use in Epilepsy Patients(Academic Press inc Elsevier Science, 2024) Oruc, Fatma Gunduz; Atan, Gulden; Seker, DemetObjective: The aim of this research is to examine the usage of Complementary and Integrated Medicine (CIM) in individuals with epilepsy and the impact of CIM usage on medication adherence. Materials and methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in a university hospital in northern Turkey between July and October 2023, involving 101 individuals with epilepsy (PWE). Descriptive information forms and the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-4 (MMS-4) were used as data collection tools. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, and post-hoc LSD analyses were employed for data evaluation. Results: The participants consisted of 65.3 % males, 25.7 % were not working due to epilepsy, and 61.4 % with generalized epilepsy. The average MMS-4 score was found to be 3.08 +/- 0.96. MMS-4 scores showed significant differences based on epilepsy type (F = 3.998, p = 0.021; eta 2 = 0.07). 76.2 % (n = 21) of the participants who used at least one CIM technique preferred "having a religious person read a prayer." Conclusion: Medication adherence in PWE was at a moderate level. Individuals with focal and secondary generalized epilepsy showed better medication adherence compared to those with generalized types. Of those participant who used at least one CIM technique to improve their general health or control seizures, the most common was "having a religious person read a prayer."
