Anthocyanin-Rich Extract From Hibiscus Sabdariffa Calyx Counteracts Uvc-Caused Impairments in Rats
(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2015) Ozkol, Hatice Uce; Koyuncu, Ismail; Tuluce, Yasin; Dilsiz, Nihat; Soral, Sinan; Ozkol, Halil
Context: Ultraviolet radiation (UV) was reported to cause oxidative stress. Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (Malvaceae) calyx is commonly used in traditional Asian and African medicines and possesses strong antioxidant capacity due to its anthocyanin (ANTH) content. Objective: This study researched the possible protective role of Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract (HSCE) in UVC exposure of rats. Material and methods: Levels of serum enzymes, renal function tests, and some oxidant/antioxidant biomarkers of skin, lens, and retina tissues were monitored. Rats were exposed to UVC 4 h daily for 40 d and simultaneously received HSCE containing 2.5, 5, and 10 mg doses of ANTH in drinking water. Results: Significant (p < 0.05) increases in the levels of serum aminotransferases, lactate dehydrogenase, urea, creatinine, and uric acid were noted after UVC exposure. In skin, lens, and retina tissues, total oxidant status, oxidative stress index, lipid peroxidation, and protein oxidation escalated markedly (p < 0.05) whereas total antioxidant status, reduced glutathione, and superoxide dismutase decreased dramatically (p < 0.05) related to UVC. Co-administration of HSCE with each ANTH dose significantly (p < 0.05) reversed aforementioned parameters (except total oxidant status) almost in all tissues. The LD50 of HSCE in rats was determined to be above 5000 mg/kg. Discussion and conclusion: Our data revealed that HSCE has a remarkable potential to counteract UVC-caused impairments, probably through its antioxidant and free radical-defusing effects. Therefore, HSCE could be useful against some cutaneous and ocular diseases in which UV and oxidative stress have a role in the etiopathogenesis.

Assessment of the Serum Paraoxonase Activity and Oxidant/Antioxidant Status in Patients With Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis
(Wiley, 2013) Bilgili, Serap Gunes; Ozkol, Halil; Takci, Zennure; Ozkol, Hatice Uce; Karadag, Ayse Serap; Aslan, Mehmet
ObjectivesSeveral studies have indicated that recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is associated with oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to investigate serum paraoxonase (PON) activity and oxidant/antioxidant status in patients with RAS. Design and methodsThirty-one patients with RAS and 31 healthy controls were enrolled. Serum PON1 and arylesterase activities, total antioxidant capacity, total oxidant status, and oxidative stress index were determined. ResultsSerum total antioxidant capacity levels, PON1, and arylesterase activities were significantly lower in RAS than controls (P<0.001), while total oxidant status levels andoxidative stress index were significantly higher (P<0.001). PON1 activity had a significant correlation with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol only (r=0.482, P<0.05),while there were no correlations with other lipids (P>0.05) in patients with RAS. ConclusionsOur results indicate that RAS is associated with decreased PON1 activity and increased oxidative stress that plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of RAS. Further studies on a larger number of patients are needed to verify these results.

Chemotherapy-Induced Acral Erythema With Involvement of the Face and Neck: a Case Report
(Sage Publications inc, 2016) Ozkol, Hatice Uce; Calka, Omer; Bulut, Gulay
Chemotherapy-induced acral erythema (CIAE) is a cutaneous response to diverse chemotherapeutic drug administration. These drugs cause symmetrical and painful erythema of palmoplantar surfaces. Bulla formation, desquamation, and subsequent reepithelialization may occur. Commonly, the lesions slowly resolve over 7-15 days, through desquamation, followed by regeneration of the skin. Here, we described a case of CIAE, with involvement of face and neck in a patient treated for breast cancer using a number of chemotherapeutic agents. Face involvement in CIAE has not been previously reported in the literature.

Clinical Evaluation of Inpatients With Acute Urticaria
(deri Zuhrevi Hastaliklar dernegi, 2011) Karadag, Ayse Serap; Bilgili, Serap Gunes; Calka, Omer; Akdeniz, Necmettin; Ozkol, Hatice Uce; Aktar, Sirac
Background and Design: To determine the clinical and etiological features of inpatients with acute urticaria and angioedema and to assess the need for laboratory tests. Material and Methods: We recruited 105 patients with acute urticaria and angioedema who were admitted to our inpatient unit. The lesions and the characteristics of the patients were analyzed. Routine diagnostic tests including complete blood count, thyroid function tests, hepatitis panel, stool parasite, total IgE levels, cultures, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, anti-nuclear antibody, and posterior anterior lung X-ray were ordered. A psychiatric consultation was obtained, when needed. The results were analyzed with SPSS 15.0 statistical software. Results: Among 105 patients, 28 (26.7%) had urticaria, 7 (6.7%) had angioedema, and 70 (66.70/0) suffered from both urticaria and angioedema. The most common accompanying symptoms were itching (91.40%) and burning (34.3%). The most common systemic symptoms were fatigue (15.2%) and headache (12.4%). The lesions usually appeared in the evening hours (24.8%). Twenty-five patients were waking up due to itching during the night. Some lesions were associated with physical activities. Systemic diseases accompanied the lesions in 12 patients (11%). In terms of etiological factors, 33 patients (22.5%) had infections. Food- related lesions were encountered in 14 (13%) patients. Thirty patients (28.5%) had history of medication use. Stress was detected in 37.1% of the patients; anxiety was diagnosed in 3% of patients. The stool was positive for parasites in 10 (9%) patients. Conclusion: Acute urticaria is a benign disorder. Although the underlying cause of urticaria can not always be identified, infections and medications are the most common causes. A comprehensive and detailed history is very important to discover the underlying cause. The diagnostic tests should be ordered according to the patient's history. Conducting diagnostic tests without considering the medical history of the patient leads to waste of time and resources. (Turkderm 2011; 45:179-83)

Comparison of Tyrosinase Antibody, Tyrosinase-Related Protein-1 And-2 Antibodies, Melanin-Concentrating Hormone Receptor Antibody Levels With Autologous Serum Skin Test and Autologous Plasma Skin Test Results in Patients With Vitiligo
(Termedia Publishing House Ltd, 2021) Unal, Abdullah; Ozkol, Hatice Uce; Bayram, Yasemin; Akdeniz, Necmettin
Introduction: Although the exact etiopathogenesis of vitiligo is unknown, the autoimmunity hypothesis is much in evidence. The autologous serum skin test (ASST) and autologous plasma skin test (APST) are in vivo methods used in the diagnosis of some autoimmune diseases, which are easy and inexpensive to perform. Aim: In this study, we investigated whether or not ASST and APST could determine autoimmunity in patients with vitiligo. Material and methods: In this study, 30 vitiligo patients presenting to the dermatology outpatient clinic and 30 healthy volunteers without any known autoimmune diseases were included. Antibodies such as tyrosinase, tyrosinase-related protein-1 (TYRP1), tyrosinase-related protein-2 (TYRP2) and melanin-concentrating hormone receptor 1 (MCHR1) antibodies determined to be associated with vitiligo were examined. In addition, the association of these antibodies with the positivity of ASST and APST, which were suggested to be associated with autoimmunity, were examined. Results: In our study, tyrosinase antibody was found to be significantly higher in vitiligo patients. ASST was positive in 12 (40%) patients with vitiligo and 8 (26.6%) control subjects. APST was positive in 8 (26.6%) of the patients with vitiligo and in 2 (6.6%) of the controls, and there was a significant difference between the groups in terms of APST positivity (p = 0.032). In addition, in our study, a significant correlation was found between TYRP1 antibody positivity and APST positivity in the patient group (p = 0.005). Conclusions: These findings suggest that we may use APST to investigate the autoimmune etiopathogenesis of vitiligo.

(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2012) Ozkol, Hatice Uce; Akdeniz, Necmettin; Ozkol, Halil; Bilgili, Serap Gunes; Calka, Omer
Plantago lanceolata, also known as snake's tongue, is a perennial herbaceous plant from the family Plantaginaceae. It is a species widely distributed both in Turkey and all over the world. Today, its fresh leaves are still used to soothe and suppress cough, externally for wound healing and draining abscesses. Phytophotodermatitis (PPD) is a dermal photosensitive reaction induced by the contact to or oral intake of a plant and subsequent exposure to sunlight. Its acute course is called phototoxic. In this paper, two cases developed phototoxic reaction with the consumption of Plantago lanceolata and subsequent exposure to the sunlight. These cases were presented since such effect of the plant has not been known previously and there is no resembling case in the literature.

Diffused Erythema Nodosum Leprosum Reaction With Necrotic Ulcers: Case Report
(Galenos Yayincilik, 2018) Ozkol, Hatice Uce; Calka, Omer; Bayram, Irfan
Erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL) is characterized by inflammatory nodules. It is an immune reaction that develops in patients receiving lepromatous leprosy treatment. In extreme severe cases, sometimes these nodules may ulcerate. In this article, we present a case of ENL with diffuse necrotic ulcer arising in a male patient using triple therapy (dapsone, clofazimine and rifampicin) because of lepromatous leprosy. A 39-year-old male patient had papules and nodules commonly found in the upper extremity and body, lividly erythematous, ranging size changes from 2-3 mm to 2 cm, some of them opened and ulcerated. Skin biopsy of the patient was evaluated as ENL. Necrosis and ulceration are rarely seen in ENL, therefore this case was presented.

(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2012) Karadag, Ayse Serap; Gumrukcuoglu, Hasan Ali; Bilgili, Serap Gunes; Ozkol, Hatice Uce; Ertugrul, Derun Taner; Simsek, Hakki; Calka, Omer
Background: Isotretinoin therapy is associated with numerous adverse effects of various systems. Although some cases have been reported, cardiac side effects are rare following isotretinoin treatment. Objective: To investigate the effects of isotretinoin on the cardiovascular system. Methods: Seventy patients with acne vulgaris were enrolled in the study. The patients were treated with a dose of 0.5-1.0 mg/kg per day of isotretinoin. Screening for biochemical and hematologic parameters, heart rate, blood pressure and electrocardiographic parameters were done before treatment and after 3 months of isotretinoin treatment. Results: Heart rate, systolic/diastolic tension and electrocardiographic parameters (P-wave duration and QTc duration) were not statistically different before compared with after treatment. Conclusion: As far as we know, there is no study researching the effect of isotretinoin on P- and QT-wave measurements in the literature. We found that isotretinoin did not affect P- and QT-wave measurement. Further studies with longer periods of follow-up are needed to understand the effect of isotretinoin on the cardiovascular system.

The Effects of Oral Supplementation of Carvacrol on Autophagy and Epithelial To Mesenchymal Transition Regulation in Uv-Induced Skin Damage
(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2025) Alvur, Ozge; Ozkol, Halil; Altindag, Fikret; Ozkol, Hatice Uce; Evyapan, Gulsah; Akar, Sakine
ObjectiveThe skin is the biggest organ of the body being most exposed to UV radiation (UVR). Many skin diseases may develop due to UV exposure. Thus, it is extremely important to reveal molecules that can prevent these diseases.Material and methodCarvacrol (CVC), a liquid phenolic monoterpenoid is found in thyme and some plants related to thyme. In our study, for the first time in the literature we aimed to determine the effects of CVC on autophagy and Epithelial to Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) mechanisms in skin damage of rats exposed to combined UVA and UVB radiation. For this purpose, twenty-eight rats were divided into four groups: I (Control), II (CVC alone), III (UVA + UVB), IV (UVA + UVB + CVC). While UVA + UVB was applied without any treatment in Group III, this application was performed with CVC support in Group IV. As for the animals in Group II, only carvacrol was given. On the 30th day of the trial, expression of certain genes playing a role in autophagy and EMT pathways were evaluated at mRNA and protein level by qRT-PCR and immunohistochemical staining in the shaved back skin tissues of rats.ResultsBased on our results, it can be concluded that CVC may prevent autophagic cell death by suppressing autophagy and it might support the wound healing process by inducing EMT in UV-induced skin damage. The molecular mechanisms of the effect of CVC on autophagy and EMT mechanisms should be clarified in further studies.

The Efficiency of Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor in Hemorrhagic Mucositis and Febrile Neutropenia Resulted From Methotrexate Toxicity
(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2015) Ozkol, Hatice Uce; Toptas, Tayfur; Calka, Omer; Akdeniz, Necmettin
Methotrexate (MTX) remains one of the most frequently used anti-metabolite agents in dermatology. MTX is an analog of folate that competitively and irreversibly inhibits dihydrofolate reductase. Oral mucositis is a common side effect of chemotherapy drugs and is characterized by erythema, pain, poor oral intake, pseudomembranous destruction, open ulceration and hemorrhage of the oral mucosa. In this paper, we report a 32-year-old female with a case of mucositis due to MTX intoxication that resulted from an overdose for rheumatoid arthritis. The patient had abdominal pain, vomiting, and nausea. During follow-up, the patient's white blood cell count was found to be 0.9 x 10(9)/L (4-10 x 10(9)/L). The patient developed fever exceeding 40 degrees C. The patient was consulted to the hematology service. They suggested using granulocyte colony-stimulating factor for febrile neutropenia. On the fifth day of treatment, the white blood cell count reached 5.3 x 10(9)/L and the patient's fever and mucositis started to resolve. Here, we presented a case of hemorrhagic mucositis and febrile neutropenia resulted from high-dose MTX that responded very well to granulocyte colony-stimulating factor treatment and we reviewed the literature.

(deri Zuhrevi Hastaliklar dernegi, 2014) Ozkol, Hatice Uce; Karadas, Sevdegul; Sunnetcioglu, Mahmut; Ceylan, Mehmet Resat; Calka, Omer; Guducuoglu, Huseyin
Background and Design: Despite a very uncommon disease in developed countries, cutaneous anthrax (CA) is currently endemic in our countries. In this study, we aimed to bring out characteristic of anthrax of Turkey by comparing our results and the other CA reports in Turkey. Materials and Methods: Sixty three inpatients with CA between October 2009 and December 2012 were investigated retrospectively. All patients were diagnosed CA by clinical finding and/or microbiological examination. The demographic characteristics patient, routine tests, wound culture and gram staining results were recorded. Results were recorded on statistical program of SPSS 13.0 and were written using percent (%). Results: There were 63 inpatients (41 female (65.1%), 22 male (34.9%), mean age 35.9 years range10-83). Forty nine patients (77.8%) had a history of contact with animals or animal product. Thirty-eight (60.3%) and twenty-one (33.3%) patients were found in the summer and fall season, respectively. Gram staining and culture were performed in 51 patients. Gram-positive bacilli were detected in 17 patients (33.3%) by gram smear. Bacillus anthracis bacilli were produced in 11 patients (21.5%) in cultures test. The lesions were mostly seen on the left hand (30.2%). Penicillin was most frequently preferred in treatment of CA (87.3%). Conclusion: CA is still endemic in Eastern Anatolia and continues to increase in recent years. Women living in the villages in which income is obtained from buying and selling of animals constitute the most important risk group. Preventive actions such as training of the risky society, vaccination of animals, and obstructing of illegal animal entries across the border, will reduce the incidence of CA.

Evaluation of the Relationship of Il-17a and Il-17f Gene Polymorphisms With the Response To Treatment in Psoriatic Patients Using Biological Drugs: a Case-Control Study in Patients in Eastern Turkey
(Termedia Publishing House Ltd, 2021) Ozkol, Hatice Uce; Gorgisen, Gokhan; Ates, Can; Ozkol, Halil; Tuluce, Yasin; Savas, Hulya; Gulacar, Ismail Musab
Introduction: IL-17A and IL-17F cytokines have important roles in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Aim: To examine the associations of IL-17A rs2275913 and IL-17F rs763780 variants with the development of psoriasis and whether these polymorphisms affect the responsiveness of biological agents. Material and methods: In our case-controlled study, which included 83 psoriatic patients who were treated with different biological agents and 69 healthy controls, we genotyped IL-17A rs2275913 and IL-17F rs763780 variants using TaqMan probes. Results: We did not observe statistically significant changes in genotype frequencies of IL-17A rs2275913 (p = 0.922) and IL-17F rs763780 (p = 0.621) variants between patient and control groups. Although we did not find any association between these polymorphisms and the development of psoriasis, statistical analyses showed that individuals with the IL-17A AA genotype had shorter disease duration (9.09 +/- 6.82, p = 0.020) and AA genotype frequency was higher in patients who used single conventional treatment (34.6%; p = 0.025). IL17A/rs2275913 variant in terms of disease duration, it was observed that individuals with AA genotype had a shorter disease duration (less than 10 years) (p = 0.009). For patients with PASI90 and PASI100 response, the IL-17A AA genotype was significantly higher (p = 0.015). On the other hand, we did not detect any statistically significant correlation between variants and response to biological agents. Conclusions: According to our results, we may suggest that rs2275913 variant seems to be associated with disease duration, use of single conventional treatment and responsiveness of PASI90 and PASI100 however both variants have no effect on the susceptibility to psoriasis in the population of Eastern Turkey.

(Hindawi Ltd, 2013) Simsek, Hakki; Sahin, Musa; Akyol, Aytac; Akdag, Serkan; Ozkol, Hatice Uce; Gumrukcuoglu, Hasan Ali; Gunes, Yilmaz
Background. Several reports have demonstrated an association between psoriasis and cardiovascular diseases. P wave dispersion (PWD) is the most important electrocardiographic (ECG) markers used to evaluate the risk of atrial arrhythmias. QT dispersion (QTD) can be used to assess homogeneity of cardiac repolarization and may be a risk for ventricular arrhythmias. Aim. To search PWD and QTD in patients with psoriasis. Methods. Ninety-four outpatient psoriasis patients and 51 healthy people were evaluated by physical examination, 12-lead ECG, and transthoracic echocardiography. Severity of the psoriasis was evaluated by psoriasis area and severity index (PASI). Results. Mean disease duration was 129.4 +/- 83.9 (range, 3-360) months and PASI ranged from 0 to 34.0 (mean +/- SD; 7.6 +/- 6.7). Compared to control group, psoriatic patients had significantly shorter Pmax and Pmin durations, longer QTcmax, and greater PWD and QTcD. Transmitral deceleration time (DT) and isovolumetric relaxation time (IVRT) were significantly longer among psoriasis patients. QTcD and PWD were significantly correlated with disease duration (r = 0.693, P < 0.001, and, P = 0.368, P = 0.003, resp.). Conclusions. In this study, we found that both PWD and QTcD are increased in psoriasis patients compared to healthy subjects. In addition, they had longer DT and IVRT.
