The Importance of Creatine Phosphokinase (Cpk) and Lactate Dehydrogenase (Ldh) in the Early Diagnosis of Testicular Torsion

We aimed to reveal the value of serum CPK and LDH levels in he early diagnosis of testicular tortion in this study. 15 adult male New Zealand rabbits were divided into 2 groups. The first group included 7 animals that experienced sham operation and approved as control animals. In the second group (n=8), the left testes were just twisted 720 degrees and fixed by a transmesorchial suture like Ryan described. Blood samples were obtained by venapuncture at O, 4, 8, 24 hours and 4 weeks in each group; creatine phosphokinase (CPK) and lactate de-hydrogenase (LDH) were determined. There was slight increase in LDH level in the second group but not statistically significant (p>0.05). On the other hand, significant increase in CPK levels (p>0.05) in 4 hours after torsion were seen (mean 6297±2012 compared to the level in the first sample, 2768±982). CPK tended to decrease after 8 hours (mean 4459±1867). No significant alterations were noted in both enzyme levels in those having sham operation (p>0.05). Thus, determination of serum CPK may be an auxiliary alternative in the diagnosis of testicular torsion.
The Incidence of Idiopathic Hypercalciuria in School Children in Van

Urine calcium-creatinine ratios (UCa/UCr) in 930 elementary school children in Van were determined to find out the epidemiology and etiopathogenesis of hypercalciuria in children. At least two determinations of calcium-creatinine ratios above 0.21 were accepted as criteria for hypercalciuria. Those who fit the hypercalciuria criteria were further examined. The hypercalciuria incidence in our area came out to be 6.23%. Seventeen of the 58 hypercalciuric children could be examined thoroughly. Although of those children had a family history of urolithiasis, the x-ray and laboratory examinations revealed no urinary stone, urinary infection or metabolic disorders.
Seminal Ldh-X Activity in Normal and Infertile Men

LDH-X, an isoenzyme of lactate dehydrogenase specific for germinal epithelium activity, was measured in the seminal plasma of infertile and fertile subjects. A total of 96 semen samples were classified into the following four groups: 1- men with proven fertility (n=27); 2- moderate oligozoospermic subjects (n=25): 3- severe oligozoospermic subjects (n=22): 4- azospermic subjects (n=22). LDH-X was analyzed quantitatively in semen. A good correlation was found between LDH-X activity and totol sperm count (r=0.686, P<0.001 ). In conclusion, seminal LDH-X seems to be a practical index of germinal cell activity in human, seminiferous tubule giving some information about the spermatozoid quality.
Van ve Çevresinde Yaşayan Sağlıklı Yetişkin Bireylerde Tiroid Hormonlarının Referans Değerleri

Amaç: Bu çalışma, Van bölgesinde yaşayan tiroid hormonu değerlerini elde etmek amacıyla yapıldı. Yöntem: Çalışmaya yaşları 21-63 arasında olan tiroid hastalığını düşündüren herhangi bir şikayeti olmayan ve fizik muayenesi normal olan 596 sağlıklı kişi alındı. Tiroid hormon tayinleri serum örneklerinde radioimmunoassay (RİA) yöntemiyle gerçekleştirildi. Bulgular: Çalışma sonunda, normal değer ortalamaları total T3 için 1.92± 0.44 nmol/L, total T4 için 117.03± 22.71 nmol/L, serbest T3 için 5.20± 0.60 pmol/L, serbest T4 için 17.06± 2.96 pmol/L ve TSH için 1.33± 0.73 m IU/ml olarak bulundu. Sonuç: Tiroid değerlerinin normal sınırlarda, TSH değerlerinin ise düşük olduğu sonucuna varıldı.
