Article Analgesic and Hepatoprotective Effects of Chelidonium Majus L(University of Ankara, 2007) Sever Yilmaz, B.; Özbek, H.; Saltan Çitoǧlu, G.; Uǧraş, S.; Bayram, I.; Erdoǧan, E.Water extract of Chelidonium majus L. (CM) was investigated for analgesic effect in mice and hepatoprotective effect in rats. Analgesic activity of the extract was tested using tail-flick test. Mice were injected CM intraperitoneally (i.p.) in doses of 50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg end 200 mg/kg. Pain tresholds were measured with tail-flick test before administration and at 30th, 90th and 150th minutes after treatment. Hepatoprotective activity of CM on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced acute liver toxicity was also studied. Rats were injected CM i.p. in doses of 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg. CM had no analgesic activity at 50 and 100 mg/kg doses. However at 200 mg/kg dose, it produced higher analgesic activity than aspirin at 90th minute. At the 150th minute, its analgesic activity was equal to that of aspirin. CM (100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg) showed no significant influence on the increased levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and bilirubine in CCl4 treated animals. Histopathological examination did not reveal any significant difference between CM (100 mg/kg) and CCl4 groups. The results of this study clearly indicate that C. majus. has analgesic activity at 200 mg/kg dose in mice. However C. majus. has no hepatoprotective effect against carbon tetrachloride-induced liver toxicity in rats.Article Breast Hamartoma: Radiologic Appearances(2003) Harman, M.; Ünal, Ö.; Uǧraş, S.; Etlik, Ö.; Kotan, Ç.Article Experimental Testicular Torsion and Its Effects on the Contralateral Testicle(1997) Aydin, S.; Uǧraş, S.; Odabaş, Ö.; Yilmaz, Y.; Atilla, M.K.; Yeǧin, E.Objective: Following experimental unilateral torsion of the testis the histologic effects of unilateral testicular torsion on the contralateral testis were investigated. Materials and methods: Utilizing detorsion or orchiectomy at 4 hours and 8 hours after torsion, the effects of early and late treatment modalities on the contralateral testicle were observed. Results: Morphometry of the contralateral testis revealed some alterations including focal sclerosis, decrease in mean seminiferous tubular diameter and a marked increase of the Leydig cells in some subgroups. Conclusion: In spite of some changes, definite evidence for contralateral damage due to ipsilateral torsion contributing to male infertility was hardly observed.Article Hepatoprotective Effect of Foeniculum Vulgare Essential Oil: a Carbon-Tetrachloride Induced Liver Fibrosis Model in Rats(2004) Öbek, H.; Uǧraş, S.; Bayram, I.; Uygan, I.; Erdoǧan, E.; Öztürk, A.; Huyut, Z.Hepatoprotective activity of Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) essential oil was studied using a carbon tetrachloride-induced liver fibrosis model in rats. The hepatotoxicity produced by chronic carbon tetrachloride administration was found to be inhibited by Foeniculum vulgare essential oil with evidence of decreased levels of serum aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and bilirubin. Histopathological findings also suggest that Foeniculum vulgare essential oil prevents the development of chronic liver damage. The changes in body weights in the rats assigned to the study groups supported these biochemical and histopathological findings. The results of this study clearly indicate that Foeniculum vulgare essential oil has a potent hepatoprotective action against carbon tetrachloride-induced liver fibrosis in rats.Article The Histopathological Effects of Intraarticular Administration of Tramadol on Rabbit's Sinovia(2003) Kati, I.; Demirel, C.B.; Uǧraş, S.; Abbasov, U.H.; Silay, E.; Timurkan, H.The analgesic effect of tramadol is due to it's effect on opioid receptor together with the enhancing function of the spinal descending inhibitory pathway by inhibition of reuptake of both 5 hydroxytryptamine and norepinephrine. In this study we aim to invastigate the effects of intraarticular tramadol on synovia. Eighteen healtyh rabbits 0.5-1 years old and weighted between 1.8-2.5 kg were included in the study. All rabbits were divided into five groups as follow; Group 1 (n=4), group 2 (n=4), Group 3 (n=4), Group 4 (n=4), and control group (n=2). Tramadol (12.5 mg/0.5 mL), or saline (0.5 mL) were given, intraarticularly in to the back knees of the rabbits in the study groups and control group respectively. Rabbits in group 1 and control groups were sacrified at first day, group 2 at 7th day, group 3 at 15th day, and group 4 at 21 th day by letal dose of sevoflurane. Examination of sinovia of the all rabbits were normal and there was no differences between groups. In conclusion; Tramadol has no histopathological effect on rabbits sinovia and may be safely administered intraarticularly in human.Article Hypoglycemic and Hepatoprotective Effects of Foeniculum Vulgare Miller Seed Fixed Oil Extract in Mice and Rats(2003) Özbek, H.; Öztürk, M.; Bayram, I.; Uǧraş, S.; Çitoǧlu, G.S.Objective: We aimed to investigate median lethal dose (LD50) and hypoglycemic effect of fixed oil of Foeniculum vulgare Miller seed fixed oil (FFO) in mice and its hepatoprotective effect on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced liver injury model in rats. Method: Extract of FFO, glibenclamide (as a reference group) and physiologic saline (control group) were administrated to the healthy and diabet occured mice with alloxan. Before treatment in the first, second, third, fourth and 24th hours, blood was taken from the vena coccygea of mice. Blood glucose levels were measured. Twenty-four Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups (n=6), and the groups treated daily for seven days, by i.p. injections, of isotonic saline solution (ISS), olive oil, carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), CCl 4 + FFO respectively. Results: FFO did not significantly reduced blood glucose in alloxane-induced diabetic mice compared to ISS control group. In contrast, glibenclamide effectively reduced blood glucose of alloxane-induced mice in first, second, fourth and 24th hours as expected. In the CCl4-treated group and FFO-treated group serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels were quite high. In contrast, the control groups (group I and group II) had significantly lower levels of AST and ALT when compared with the CCl4 and FFO groups. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that FFO has neither a potent hepatoprotective effect against CCl4-induced hepatic damage in rats nor a hypoglycemic action in mice. The LD50 of FFO was determined as 5.52 mL/kg.Article A Morphological Study in Broiler Chick Hearts(1997) Aydinlioǧlu, A.; Raǧbetli, M.Ç.; Uǧraş, S.; Erdoǧan, E.The normally developing cardiovascular system of the chicken resembles that of the human. The purpose of the present study is to investigate some macroscopic and microscopic similarities between the chick and the human heart. For this study 20 adult and 10 newborn Broiler chickens were used. The heart and great vessels were routinely fixed in 10% formaldehyde in a phosphate buffer. Five adult and five newborn chicks hearts were embedded in paraffin. All section were examined by light microscopy. The atrioventricular valve of 15 adult chick hearts were examined macroscopically. While some structures previously reported were determined, two different properties of the mural leaf which are chordae tendineae in its posterolateral region anchoring at the right ventricle and its widening from the anterior to posterior commissure was also observed.Article Placental Pathologic Features in Preeclampsia and Normal Pregnancies(2005) Engin Üstün, Y.; Üstün, Y.; Zeteroǧlu, Ş.; Güvercinci, M.; Kamaci, M.; Uǧraş, S.AIM: The objective was to evaluate placental pathologic features in normal and preeclamptic pregnancies. STUDY DESING: Eighty-three preeclamptic-eclamptic and 30 control pregnant women without systemic disease between October 2001 and September 2002 were prospectively recruited. Placental pathologies were evaluated due to macroscopic findings and nine histological parameters on light microscope. Statistics included student t test and chi-square test. RESULT(s): Increased syncytiotrophoblast knotting, cytotrophoblast proliferation, focal perivillous fibrin deposition, villous stromal fibrosis, fibrinoid necrosis, maturation, basal membrane thickening, mineralization in basal membrane and villous stromal edema were more common in the study group compared to the control group. Fibrinoid necrosis in uteroplacental vessels, villous stromal fibrosis, mineralization in basal membrane and villous stromal edema were not seen in any patient in the control group. CONCLUSION: Placental pathologic features play an important role in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia.Article Rice Bodies in Knee Joint: a Case Report(2002) Tuncay, I.; Tosun, N.; Uǧraş, S.; Ince, Ö.Rice bodies with synovial origin resemble cartilage and they are usually sourced of fibrin. They are supposed as synovial chondromatosis wrongly. Tuberculosis, rheumatoid arthritis or other seronegative arthropathies may exist in the etiology. Twenty-one years old patient with complainted of occasional swelling and pain, underwent diagnostic arthroscopy. Massive rice bodies with synovitis in the joint were observed in the knee arthroscopy under local anesthesia. Afterward, open surgical extirpation with subtotal synovectomy was performed. Fibrinous structure was observed histopathologically. No recurrence was found during follow up period, also no underlying tuberculosis or rheumatologic pathology was detected.Article Sinus Histiocytosis With Massive Lymphadenopathy (rosai-dorfman's Disease): a Case Report(2003) Bakan, V.; Köseoǧlu, B.; Demirtaş, I.; Uǧraş, S.; Öner, A.F.Rosai-Dorfman disease or Sinus Histiocytosis with Massive Lymphadenopathy (SHML) is an idiopathic, benign, self-limited disorder characterized by painless cervical lymphadenopathy, fever, and weight loss. The disease most commonly affects children and young adults. A 3-year-old child with Rosai-Dorfman Disease was presented. The diagnosis was made by a cervical lymph node biopsy. The disease have regressed spontaneously and 3 years follow-up was uneventful.Article Testicular Needle Biopsy: Is It a Safe and Adequate Method(1997) Odabaş, Ö.; Uǧraş, S.; Yilmaz, Y.; Aydin, S.; Atilla, M.K.We aimed to investigate if testicular needle biopsy is adequate and safe for the examination of testis. Needle biopsies were performed on 21 testes of 5 patients with advanced prostate cancer and 11 patients with cryptorchidism before orchiectomy. Biopsies were done with the prostatic tru-cut needle. After needle biopsy, the tract and puncture sites were explored and an incisional biopsy was performed on each testis. Both needle specimens and open biopsy specimens were fixed in Bouin's solution and sent for histologic examination. There were small haematomas in two testes and moderate heamorrhage between tunica vaginalis layers in another. The tissues obtained by needle biopsy were sufficient except for two specimens and diagnostic accuracy was perfect. Nevertheless, measurement of the seminiferous tubules of the lamina propria could not be achieved in many cases.Article Tissue Transglutaminase Expression in Duodenal Mucosa of Patients With Celiac Disease and of Normal Subjects(2003) Tuncer, I.; Bayram, I.; Kaba, I.; Mercan, R.; Uǧraş, S.Background/aims: Our aim in the present study was to investigate tissue transglutaminase expression by immunohistochemistry in duodenal mucosa of patients with celiac disease. Methods: A total of twelve patients with celiac disease were examined. The patients had different clinical and histopathologic degrees of severity and responded to gluten withdrawal with clinical improvement. Ten subjects with various unrelated diseases served as controls. Serum endomysium antibodies were measured by an indirect immunofluorescence method using a commercial kit. Duodenal biopsy specimens were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Immunohistochemical staining for anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies was performed using commercial kit. Results: Serum endomysium antibodies and evaluation of small bowel biopsy specimens were normal in all control subjects. However, serum endomysium antibodies were positive in all of the celiac patients. Immunohistochemical staining pattern of duodenal biopsy specimen performed using anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies was similar in celiac patients and control subjects. Conclusion: Tissue transglutaminase expression by immunohistochemical methods in untreated celiac mucosa is not suitable for diagnosis of celiac disease.Article Treatment of Olfactory Neuroblastoma Via Subfrontal and Midfacial Degloving Approaches: a Case Report(2008) Kutluhan, A.; Yilmaz, N.; Yakut, F.; Yurttaş, V.; Uǧraş, S.A 12-year-old girl presented with complaints of nasal obstruction and a right infraorbital swelling. A biopsy obtained from the right nasal passage revealed olfactory neuroblastoma. The tumor was completely excised via subfrontal craniofacial and midfacial degloving approaches. No recurrence was observed during a three-year follow-up.Article Upper Esophageal Stenosis in a Case With Rothmund-Thomson Syndrome(2001) Tuncer, I.; Metin, A.; Uǧraş, S.; Uygan, I.Rothmund-Thomson Syndrome is an autosomal recessive disease that may be accompained by development abnormalities. Etiology of the disease has been postulated to DNA repair deficiency and intestinal anomaly has been very rarely. The case of RTS. admitted with dysphagia due to esophagus stenosis and his complaints disappeared completely after esophagus dilatation, was discussed ill the light of literature aknowledgement.Article Using of Nmp 22 Only or Together With the Cytology in the Diagnosis and Follow-Up of Bladder Tumors(2003) Yilmaz, Y.; Aydin, S.; Bayrakli, H.; Uǧraş, S.; Özman, E.; Berktaş, M.Introduction: Nuclear Matrix Protein is a tumor marker using for early diagnosis and follow up of bladder cancer. This study was designed to determine the effectiveness of NMP 22 and cytology for early detection and follow up of bladder cancer. Material and Methods: Sixty-eight patients who were included in this study were divided in three groups. The first group comprised 46 patients with hematuria and lower urinary tract symptoms, who had no previous history of bladder cancer. Seventeen patients were included in the second group who treated by transurethral resection of bladder tumor, partial cystectomy or intracaviter chemotherapy. The third group consisted of 5 patients with bladder tumor previously. They refused any kind of treatment. A reference value of 15 U/ml was utilized for NMP 22 in urine. A positive outcome was a tumor seen in cystoscopic examination, which was later histopathologically confirmed as malignant. A negative outcome was tumor free cystoscopy, or benign histopathology of the suspected biopsy specimens. Urine cytology results were considered "malign" (severe dysplasia, malign and transitional cell carcinoma) and "benign" (metaplasia, inflamatory cells, dysplasia ). Results: Eighteen patients of the first group had bladder cancer, whereas NMP 22 was (+) in 29 patients in this group. However, NMP was (+) in 14 of the 18 patients with bladder tumor. The sensitivity and specificity of NMP 22 in group 1 were 77.7% and 46.6%, and that of cytology were 83.3% and 89.2% respectively. When all of the patients were evaluated together, the sensitivity and specificity of NMP 22 were 80.7% and 64.2%, and that of cytology were 88.4% and 90.4% respectively. Conclusion: In conclusion, this study indicates that NMP 22 reduces the necessity of cystoscopy, and it can be used as a screening test in combination with cytology.
