    Development and Reproduction of Propylaea Japonica (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) Raised on Aphis Gossypii (Homoptera: Aphididae) Fed Transgenic Cotton

    Development and reproduction of Propylaea japonica (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) raised on Aphis gossypii (Homoptera: Aphididae) fed transgenic cotton. Zoological Studies 45(1): 98-103. A laboratory experiment was designed to evaluate the effects of transgenic cotton containing Bacillus thuringiensis (Berliner) Cry1Ac toxin on the survival, development, and fecundity of a predatory ladybeetle, Propylaea japonica (Thunberg), through a food chain using cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover as an herbivorous prey. No significant differences were observed in total survival from hatching to adult, or in larval and pupal durations of P. japonica supplied with aphids fed on either transgenic or non-transgenic cotton. Similarly, no significant differences in longevity, reproduction, weight, or fatty acid contents of adult beetles were detected. Our results suggest that this type of transgenic cotton might have little effect on the survival, development, and fecundity of P. japonica through this food chain.

    An Economic Comparison of Pesticide Application Regimes for Processing Tomatoes

    In a field experiment aimed at the management of pests, diseases and weeds in tomato agroecosystems using a recommended range of pesticide applications compared with lower chemical input systems, the economics of pesticide use on processing tomatoes in Ohio, USA, was evaluated in 1994 and 1995. The pesticide regimes used included: (i) full-spectrum recommended pesticide use, based on a comprehensive pesticide application schedule including insecticides (carbaryl, endosulfan and esfenvalerate), a fungicide (chlorothalonil) and herbicides (trifluralin and paraquat); (ii) insecticides only, based on applications of the same insecticides and doses used in (i); (iii) fungicides and herbicides only, based on applications of the same fungicides and herbicides used in (i); and (iv) control plots, which received no pesticide applications. All of the costs involved in applying pesticides (chemicals, machinery, labor) were recorded for all treatments for the economic analysis. Overall, the fungicide treatments resulted in higher yields than either the control or the insecticides-only regime, and the profits from the full-spectrum pesticide and fungicide & herbicide regimes were greater than those from the insecticide-only regime and controls in 1994. The yields and profits from all pesticide regimes were substantially less in 1095 than in 1994.

    Effect of Cultivars and Insecticides on Sitonid Weevil, Sitona Crinitus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), and on Yield, Yield Components and Nodulation of Lentil (Lens Culinaris)

    An experiment was conducted during 2001 and 2002 to determine the effectiveness of different insecticides against sitonid weevil [Sitona crinitus (Herbst.)] (Coleoptera : Curculionidae) on 2 cultivars ('Sazak 91' and 'Yerli Kirmizi') of lentil (Lens culinaris Medikus). Yield, yield components and number of nodules fed by larvae were compared between the 2 cultivars as well as among insecticide treatments. Insecticides applied were chlorpyriphos (720 g ai/ha), malathion (1 300 g ai/ha) and a systemic insecticide, oxydemeton methyl (265 g ai/ha). Application of oxydemeton methyl decreased the damage on nodules by 52.6 and 41.2% in 2001 and 2002, respectively, resulting in seed yield increase (729 and 1 461.6 kg/ha in 2001 and 2002), biological yield (1 825.5 kg/ha and 3 521.6 kg/ha), pods/plant (23.8 and 25.7), 1 000-seed weight (47.7 and 48.4 g), plant height (26.1 cm and 30.0 cm), branches/plant (7.3 and 8.9), root dry weight/plant (0.136 g and 0.106 g) and shoot dry weight/plant (0.859 g and 1.056 g) over the control treatment. 'Yerli Kirmizi' cultivar showed less nodules fed (0:8 and 1.9 respectively) by the sitonid pest and gave higher seed yield (712.6 and 1 393.3 kg/ha than 'Sazak 91 (537.4 and 1 301.3 kg/ha) in 2001 and 2002 respectively.

    The Effect of Low Temperatures on Diapause and Non-Diapause Larvae of the Pine Caterpillar, Dendrolimus Tabulaeformis Tsai Et Liu (Lepidoptera:lasiocampidae)

    Some effects of low temperatures on diapause and non-diapause larvae of the pine caterpillar, Dendrolimus tabulaeformis Tsai et Liu (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae), were investigated in laboratory experiments. The results indicated that diapause larvae had higher survival rates than non-diapause larvae at earlier stages of exposure to the low temperatures (-10, -17 and -21 degrees C). In general, the larvae lives were shorter when they were exposed to the lower temperatures. Exposure to chilling at 0 degrees C (cold pulse) in advance increased the survival rate of larvae when they were exposed to -10 degrees C, and the survival rate increased with the length of cold pulse (doubled at 50 min). No larvae could survive after the 50th day of daily exposure to -10 degrees C for 1 h followed by exposure to 27 +/- 1 degrees C for 23 h. The water contents of diapause and non-diapause larvae differed significantly, and the super-cooling points (SCPs) of non-diapause larvae were significantly higher than those of diapause larvae.

    Effects of Organic and Synthetic Fertilizer Sources on Pest and Predatory Insects Associated With Tomatoes

    The effects of organic. (composted cow manure) and synthetic (NPK) fertilizers on pests (aphids and flea beetles) and predatory arthropods (anthocorids, coccinellids and chrysopids) associated with tomatoes were evaluated in a 2-year randomized complete block field experiment. Our data suggested that the application of either organic or synthetic fertilizers could increase pest populations on tomatoes. However, there were lower populations of aphids on tomatoes grown with the organic fertilizer than on those grown with the synthetic fertilizers in the second year of the experiment, indicating that organic fertilizers may have the potential to reduce pest attacks in the long term. Anthocorid populations were larger on tomato plants with high aphid populations in the synthetic than in the organic fertilizers-treated plots.

    Effects of Weed Control Practices on Surface-Dwelling Arthropod Predators in Tomato Agroecosystems

    Weed control, an important practice in agroecosystems to protect crop production, is usually achieved with herbicides. However, these pesticides are expensive, pose potential risks to the environment, may affect some beneficial organisms indirectly, and decrease overall arthropod biodiversity, including pests and their natural enemies, by removing weeds that might act as hosts or shelters for many organisms. The activity density response of important surface-dwelling arthropod predators (ground beetles [Coleoptera: Carabidae], ants [Hymenoptera: Formicidae] and spiders [Arachnida: Araneae]) to herbicides (trifiuralin and paraquat), and to two alternative weed management practices (rye straw mulch and mechanical treatment to maintain weeds below threshold levels, in comparison with an untreated check), was assessed using pitfall traps. The mulch treatment had the greatest effect on activity density, reducing the number of predators trapped significantly (P<0.05). Herbicide use resulted in significant (P<0.05) reductions in the activity density of ground beetles. Most predators were trapped in the check plots - which had the highest weed biomass, followed in turn by numbers trapped in the threshold weed control treatment, the full herbicide application and the mulch treatment plots.

    Evaluation of Winter Wheat as a Potential Relay Crop for Enhancing Biological Control of Cotton Aphids in Seedling Cotton

    A 2-year study was conducted to evaluate the role of winter wheat, Triticum aestivum L., as a potential relay crop to conserve arthropod natural enemies and suppress cotton aphids, Aphis gossypii Glover, in seedling cotton. The results suggested that the natural enemies that moved from the adjacent wheat fields to cotton fields with the maturity and harvest of wheat could keep the cotton aphid population at the edges (0-4 m) of cotton fields under the action threshold of 100 aphidS/m(2). Data also suggested that the wheat strip served as a reservoir to conserve arthropod predators and "relayed" its predators to cotton when wheat matured and senesced.

    The Influence of Chemical Management of Pests, Diseases and Weeds on Pest and Predatory Arthropods Associated With Tomatoes

    The effects of selected pesticide application regimes on pest predator populations as well as pests were investigated in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) agroecosystems. The treatments included: (i) the full spectrum of recommended pesticides, including insecticides (carbaryl, endosulfan, and esfenvalerate), a fungicide (chlorothalonil), and herbicides (trifluralin and paraquat); (ii) only insecticides, using the same insecticides and doses as in the full-spectrum pesticide treatment; (iii) only fungicides and herbicides; using the same fungicides and herbicides and doses as in the full-spectrum pesticide use treatment; (iv) control plots which received no pesticide applications. In 1994, the insecticides controlled aphids and flea beetles and reduced their populations by 85% and 72%, respectively. However, aphid populations were 125% greater in the insecticide-treated plots than in the control plots in 1995. The fungicides and herbicides caused increases in the numbers of aphids by 33% in 1994 and by 39.8% in 1995 and those of flea beetles by 55% in 1994 and 17% in 1995. All the full-spectrum pesticide treatments had some degree of detrimental effects on populations of predatory arthropods. The different pesticide applications reduced coccinellid beetle Coleomegilla maculata (Col: Coccinellidae), populations by 6.6% to 35.5% in 1994 but only slightly in 1995; Anthocoridae (Heteroptera) numbers by 26.2% to 55.8% in 1994 and 13.5% to 38.8% in 1995; spider (Araneae) populations by 44.6% to 70.9% in 1994 and 37.0% to 91.4% in 1995. Five hypotheses are proposed to explain these results: (1) the fungicide and herbicide applications reduced the populations of predatory arthropods which in turn resulted in higher pest populations; (2) the fungicide and herbicide applications suppressed the fungal parasites of the pests; (3) the applications increased the fecundity of the pests and resulted in more offspring of the pests and hence higher populations, (4) the applications caused some physiological changes in the tomato plants that attracted more pests or stimulated their reproduction and; (5) the fungicide applications provided more nutritious and suitable habitats for the pests by suppressing the disease of the tomatoes, (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.     The Influence of Pesticide Applications on Helicoverpa Armigera Hubner and Sucking Pests in Transgenic Bt Cotton and Non-Transgenic Cotton in China

    Effects of pesticide applications, based on an IPM program on cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera Hubner, cotton mirids and cotton leafhoppers, were evaluated in transgenic Bt-cotton and non-transgenic cotton agroecosystems between 1999 and 2001 in China. Differences in pest populations between cotton varieties were also compared. In 1999 and 2000, bollworm populations on non-transgenic cotton were larger than those on transgenic Bt-cotton. In Bt-cotton fields, the numbers of fourth-generation bollworms were greater than those of in the second and the third generations over all 3 years of study. Leafhopper populations on Bt-cotton were consistently larger than those on non-transgenic cotton during the 3 years of study. Although the use of transgenic Bt-cotton decreased the need for insecticide applications against cotton bollworm, this relaxation from pesticide applications could cause increased populations of sucking insects, which could require additional insecticide applications.     Influence of Pesticide Applications on Pest and Predatory Arthropods Associated With Transgenic Bt Cotton and Nontransgenic Cotton Plants

    The effects of pesticide applications on pests (aphids and acarid mites) and predators (ladybeetles and spiders) were investigated in transgenic Bt cotton and nontransgenic cotton agroecosystems in 1999, 2000 and 2001. Transgenic cotton did not cause changes in populations of acarids and did not reduce numbers of predators considerably; its effects on aphids were inconsistent. Although insecticides were not applied against the main pest cotton bollworm - on transgenic cotton, the total number of insecticide applications in 3 years was no less than the total applied on nontransgenic cotton, because additional applications were required against sucking pests on transgenic Bt cotton. Pesticide applications decreased numbers of aphids, acarids and predatory spiders significantly on both transgenic and nontransgenic cottons. The results suggest that the use of Bt cotton should be evaluated carefully in China.

    Integration of Weeds Into Pest Management in Alfalfa Agroecosystems

    Weeds are often major limiting factors in crop production and they are eliminated through various control measures in modern agricultural systems. However, weeds can increase diversity and contribute to the stability of agroecosystems. They can also modify pest incidences by providing alternative hosts for pests and food sources, shelter and habitat for natural enemies. Because of their ecological aspects, weeds, when managed properly, could play an important role in pest management in organic farming systems. In this study, we assessed the effects of weeds on the incidences of alfalfa weevil, Hypera variabilis Hbst. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), arthropod predators and forage yield in replicated weedy and weed-free plots in 1998 and 1999. The pest populations were sampled throughout the season using a sweep-net. Yield data were obtained using a I m(2) quadrate. The results showed that the weevil numbers were 20% higher in the weed-free plots than in the weedy plots in 1998. Arthropod predators were more abundant in the weedy plots. Forage yield was 14% and 16% higher in the weed-free plots than in the weedy plots in 1998 and 1999, respectively.

    Quantification of Diapausing Fourth Generation and Suicidal Fifth Generation Cotton Bollworm, Helicoverpa Armigera, in Cotton and Corn in Northern China

    Cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a major pest of cotton and corn crops in northern China. A phenological differentiation between fourth generation cotton bollworms from cotton and those from corn fields was observed in northern China during 1999-2000. The proportion of pupation in late fall was marginally higher in cotton fields compared to that in corn fields; however, the proportions of fall emergence of moths from cotton fields were significantly higher than those from corn fields. The proportion of spring emergence of moths was also significantly higher for larvae collected from cotton (28.0%) than from corn (14.5%). The overwintering duration of females was significantly shorter than that of males in both crops. Moreover, the overwintering duration of bollworm populations from cotton was significantly longer than that from corn. The early spring population of H. armigera came from both cotton and corn fields, but the spring emergence of moths from larvae collected from cotton took about 5 days longer to reach 100% emergence compared to that from corn.

    Use of Fertility as a Cultural Practice in Pest Management in Alfalfa

    Using different fertility sources, we evaluated the effects of these inputs on the incidences of alfalfa weevil, Hypera variabilis Hbst.(Coleoptera: Curculionidae), predatory arthropods and yield in replicated alfalfa plots in 1998 and 1999. The fertility treatments included: (i) use of inorganic fertilizers, (ii) animal manure, (iii) dried manure ash, commonly used as a plant nutrient source in the Eastern Anatolia and (iv) no added fertility control. The results showed that the weevil populations were higher in the inorganic fertilizer and the animal manure treated plots than those in the control plots both in 1998 and 1999. Dried manure ash did not have any considerable effects on the weevil populations. Yield was higher in the control plots in 1998 and in the dried manure ash treated plots in 1999 than in the other fertility treatment plots.
