Article A 5 Years Follow-Up for Ischemic Cardiac Outcomes in Patients With Carotid Artery Calcification on Panoramic Radiographs Confirmed by Doppler Ultrasonography in Turkish Population(British inst Radiology, 2020) Akkemik, Ozlem; Kazaz, Hakki; Tamsel, Sadik; Dundar, Nesrin; Sahinalp, Sahin; Ellidokuz, HulyaObjective: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of digital panoramic radiograph (DPR) for detection of carotid artery calcification (CAC) confirmed by Doppler Ultrasonography (DUSG) and to clarify the relationship between between CAC identified by DPR and cardiovascular events through a 5 year follow-up period. Methods: Of 3600 consecutive patients examined, 158 patients presented with CAC as detected by DPR. The final study group was composed of 96 patients who had CAC confirmed by DUSG or CT angiogram. The control group was composed of 62 patients who has normal DUSG. The end point of the study was the occurrence of any cardiovascular event. Results: 72 (75%) of the 96 patients with CAC confirmed by DUSG (16 patients had significant stenosis) had bilateral and 24 (25%) had unilateral CAS as detected by DUSG. There was a low agreement between the examination results with a kappa value of 0.488 (p < 0.005) for calcification. Study data revealed that smoking, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes mellitus (DM) and diastolic hypertension were significantly more common in patients with CAC than the control group (p < 0.05). During the follow-up period, 13 subjects had myocardial infarction and 1 subject died; in the control group, 1 patient died after MI and 1 patient died of a non-cardiac event. Conclusion: Patients with CAC detectable by DPR concomitant with COPD, DM, smoking or diastolic hypertension are more likely to suffer from vascular events. Therefore, patients with detectable carotid plaque in DPR require referral to a cardiovascular surgery clinic for further investigations.Article 7-Acetoxyhorminone From Salvia Multicaulis Vahl. as Promising Inhibitor of 3-Hydroxy Coenzyme a (hmg-Coa) Reductase(Mdpi, 2022) Yigitkan, Serkan; Ertas, Abdulselam; Salmas, Ramin Ekhteiari; Firat, Mehmet; Orhan, Ilkay Erdogan3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase is a key enzyme involved in cholesterol biosynthesis and one of the most important targets for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia. A limited number of studies on the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitory potential of natural products are available. Thus, in the current study, we aimed to test the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitory capacity of extracts from the roots and aerial parts of Salvia multicaulis Vahl., through activity-guided isolation. Our findings revealed that the root extract prepared with dichloromethane-acetone (1:1) showed the highest inhibition (71.97 +/- 0.37%) at 100 mu g/mL. The extract was then initially fractionated by column chromatography and the obtained fractions were monitored by thin layer chromatography. Fractions which were similar to each other were combined and a total of 15 fractions were obtained. Further conventional chromatographic studies were carried out on the active fractions. Based on these fractions, 10 known compounds, comprising 9 terpenes and 1 steroid derivative in total, were isolated and their structures were verified by a combination of IT-TOF-MS, and 1D and 2D NMR techniques. According to the enzyme inhibition data of the identified compounds, 7-acetoxyhorminone exerted the highest inhibition (84.15 +/- 0.10%, IC50 = 63.6 +/- 1.21 mu g/mL). The molecular docking experiments on 7-acetoxyhorminone and horminone indicated that both compounds strongly bind to the active site of the enzyme.Article Ab Initio Investigations of the Structural, Electronic, Magnetic and Mechanical Properties of Crx (X = As, Sb, Se, and Te) Transition Metal Pnictides and Chalcogenides(Iop Publishing Ltd, 2019) Charifi, Z.; Guendouz, D. J.; Baaziz, H.; Soyalp, F.; Hamad, B.The structural, electronic, magnetic, and mechanical properties of CrX (X = As, Sb, Se and Te) transition metal pnictides and chalcogenides were investigated using ab initio density functional theory using the local density approximation and generalized gradient approximation. Under ambient conditions, CrAs and CrTe are stable in the orthorhombic MnP (MP)-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) and hexagonal NiAs (NA) (FM) structures, respectively, whereas CrSb and CrSe have NA-type (AFM) structure. The half-metallic behavior was predicted for the zinc blende (ZB) and wurtzite (WZ) structures of CrAs, the zinc blende (ZB)-type of CrSb and CrSe compounds and the zinc blende (ZB) and rock salt (RS) structures of CrTe. However, the remaining structures are found to exhibit a metallic behavior. The highest total magnetic moment of 4 mu(B) was predicted for the RS and ZB (FM) structures of CrTe. The investigated CrX compounds were found to be mechanically stable at ambient pressure. The high value of B/G ratio indicates that CrSb (NA) is a ductile material, whereas CrAs (MP), CrSe and CrTe (NA) are brittle due to the lower B/G value.Article Ab-Initio Study of the Electronic Structure and Optical Properties of Kno3 in the Ferroelectric Phase(Iop Publishing Ltd, 2009) Erdinc, Bahattin; Akkus, HarunThe electronic band structure and optical properties of the ferroelectric phase III of KNO3 have been investigated by the first-principle pseudopotential method using the density functional theory under the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and local density approximation (LDA). The calculated band structure shows that the ferroelectric phase III of KNO3 has a direct band gap with a value of 1.76 eV at the point of the first Brillouin zone (BZ). The structural optimization of KNO3 has been performed using the GGA and LDA. The results of the structure optimization have been compared with the experimental results and have been found to be in good agreement with these results. In this study, the microwave absorption properties of polyvinyl butyral (PVB)/polyaniline (PAM) coated-Fe3O4 (COM1) and PVB/Fe3O4 (COM2) nanocomposites with single and double layer were investigated in the 1-14 GHz for different thickness (t(m)) of composites. XRD, FT-IR, TEM, and SEM were used to determine the structure properties of the composites. The Coaxial transmission line method was used to obtain permittivity (epsilon', epsilon '') and permeability (mu', mu '')parameters of the composites. The reflection loss of the single and multilayers of different thicknesses was calculated. It was figured out that the higher value of reflection loss (R-L) (-51.5 dB at 11.9 GHz) was obtained with COM2 composite. However, using PANI has provided a wider absorption range in COM1 composites. All rights reserved.Article Accuracy of the London Atlas, Willems, and Nolla Methods for Dental Age Estimation: a Cross-Sectional Study on Eastern Turkish Children(Springer Heidelberg, 2021) Koc, Alaettin; ozlek, Esin; oner Talmac, Ayse GulObjectives This study aimed to estimate the dental age (DA) using the London Atlas, Willems, and Nolla methods and to compare their accuracies. Methods The DA was estimated using the aforementioned methods on panoramic radiograms of a total of 919 Eastern Turkish patients aged 6-14 years, of whom 459 were female and 460 were male. The overestimation and underestimation values were determined in relation to the chronological age (CA) values. The paired t test was used to compare the mean DA and CA values. Multiple regression analysis was used to derive gender-specific formulations for the three methods. Results The most accurate method for estimating the DA was the Willems method (mean prediction error 0.80), followed by the London Atlas (mean prediction error 0.83) and Nolla (mean prediction error 0.89) methods. Statistically significant differences were found only between the Willems and Nolla methods. Conclusion All three methods can be used for DA estimations of Eastern Turkish children. Clinical relevance Willems was the most suitable method for this patient sample. However, the London Atlas method may be preferred due to its practicability and comparable accuracy.Letter Acrodermatitis Enteropathica in Three Siblings(Medknow Publications & Media Pvt Ltd, 2013) Karadag, Ayse Serap; Bilgili, Serap Gunes; Calka, OmerArticle The Activities of Serum Paraoxonase and Arylesterase and Lipid Profile in Acute Myeloid Leukemia: Preliminary Results(verduci Publisher, 2015) Cebi, A.; Akgun, E.; Esen, R.; Demir, H.; Cifci, A.OBJECTIVE: To investigate the activities of serum paraoxonase-1 (PON1) and arylesterase (ARE), and the lipid profile in newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-two persons (16 of AML and 16 of healthy control) were included to the study. PON1 and ARE activities were measured as spectrophotometrically in serum samples. High density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG) were analyzed in autoanalyzer. RESULTS: PON1 activities were respectively 16.04 U/L and 18.6 U/L in AML and healthy controls. There was no statistical significance between groups (p > 0.05). The mean ARE activities were respectively 0.21 U/L and 0.36 U/L in AML and healthy controls. Serum ARE activity significantly decreased in AML group (p < 0.001). Serum HDL values were significantly decreased (181.8 +/- 76.2 mg/dl; p = 0.002) in AML. There was no difference in total cholesterol, LDL and triglyceride values (respectively; 181.8 +/- 76.2 mg/dl, 120.6 +/- 64.6 mg/dl, 157.3 +/- 87.2 mg/dl; p > 0.05) between AML and controls. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first documented study about serum PON1 activity in AML patients. Although serum PON1 activities were not changed in both groups, our data suggest that the decreased serum ARE activity and HDL levels may be related the pathogenesis of AML.Article Activity of Carbon-Supported Platinum Nanoparticles Toward Methanol Oxidation Reaction(Amer Chemical Soc, 2007) Sen, Fatih; Gokagac, GulsunTwo groups of carbon-supported platinum nanoparticle catalysts have been prepared. In group 1, catalysts I and 11 were prepared using PtCl4 and H2PtCI6 as starting materials and 1-hexanethiol, HSCH2CH2CH2CH2CH2CH3, as a surfactant. For group 11, the same platinum complexes were used as starting materials (catalyst III from PtCl4, catalyst IV from H2PtCl6) and tert-octanethiol, HSC(CH3)(2)CH2CH2CH2CH2CH3, was used as a surfactant for the first time. It has been found that the group II catalysts are between similar to 2 and similar to 3.3 times more active toward methanol oxidation reaction compared to other prepared and commercial catalysts. Transmission electron microscopy shows that the platinum nanoparticles are homogeneously dispersed on the carbon support and exhibit a narrow size distribution; the average particle size was found to be 2 +/- 0.4 and 3 +/- 0.4 nm in diameter for group I and group II catalysts, respectively. X-ray diffractogram analysis indicates that the platinum nanoparticles have a face centered cubic structure consistent with that of platinum metal itself., X-ray photoelectron spectra of the catalysts indicate two different types of platinum with the Pt 4f(7/2) binding energies of 71.1, 74.4 eV; 71.3, 74.3 eV; 71.0, 74.4 eV; and 71.5, 74.5 eV for catalysts I-IV, respectively. These have been identified as Pt(0O) and Pt(IV), which could be platinum oxide or hydroxide. By looking at the oxidation state data, we found that catalysts I-IV consist of 71% Pt(0) and 29% Pt(IV); 83% Pt(0) and 17% Pt(IV); 76% Pt(0) and 24% Pt(IV); and 65% Pt(0) and 35% Pt(IV), respectively.Article Activity of Cdk4/6 Inhibitors and Parameters Affecting Survival in Elderly Patients in Age-Subgroups: Turkish Oncology Group (Tog) Retrospective Study(Bmc, 2024) Kahraman, Seda; Hizal, Mutlu; Demirel, Burcin Cakan; Guven, Deniz Can; Gumusay, Ozge; Uluc, Basak Oyan; Sendur, Mehmet Ali NahitHighly selective inhibitors of cyclin-dependent kinase 4 and 6 (CDK4/6is) have emerged as a standart of care for first- and second-line therapies in combination with endocrine therapy (ET) for HR+/HER2- metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patients. It has been reported that combination therapy is more effective than ET alone and is safe in elderly patients as well as young patients. Nevertheless, elderly and very old patients with HR+/HER2-MBC treated with CDK4/6 inhibitor (CDK4/6i) combinations are relatively underrepresented in randomized controlled trials. To contribute to the literature, we investigated the real-world efficacy, factors associated with survival and the rates of adverse events (AEs) of the treatment with palbociclib or ribociclib plus ET in the HR+/HER2- MBC patient cohort over the age of 65 for age subgroups. In this retrospective study, 348 patients were divided into subgroups: 65-69 years old, 70-79 years old and 80 years and older. Median PFS (mPFS) for whole group was 18.3 (95% CI,14.3-22.3) months. There was no significant difference in mPFS between age groups (p = 0.75). The estimated median OS (mOS) was 39.5 (95% CI, 24.9-54.1) months and there was no significant difference between age groups (p = 0.15). There was a meaningfull numerical difference that did not reach statistical significance in patients who received CDK4/6i treatment as the first line for MBC. Grade 3-4 AEs were reported in 42.7% for the entire group, and neutropenia was the most common (37.3%). In this paper, we present a case report about dystonia in the head and the neck after epileptic seizures due to 4200 mg of extended-release bupropion intake, and we aim to take attention to the rare neuropsychiatric side effects that may occur after the use of high doses of bupropion.Article The Acute Effects of Simulated Hypoxic Training at Different Altitudes on Oxidative Stress and Muscle Damage in Elite Long-Distance Runners(Peerj inc, 2025) Sarikaya, Muecahit; Oge, Beyza; Embiyaoglu, Nuri Mert; Selcuk, Muzaffer; Cinar, Vedat; Oner, Salih; Batrakoulis, AlexiosBackground Understanding the impact of altitude on muscle damage and oxidative stress is essential for optimizing training and recovery strategies for athletes exposed to high-altitude conditions. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of acute exercise at different altitudes on oxidative stress and muscle damage. Methods A total of twelve elite long-distance runners (mean age: 20.3 +/- 1.5 years) from different branches participated in the study. The exercise protocol was the Bruce submaximal treadmill exercise test, which was conducted under three simulated hypoxic conditions (at 1,700 m, 2,450 m, and 3,200 m) and one normoxic condition (sea level). All measurements took place at the same time of the day. After the exercise protocol, 5 ml venous blood samples were taken from the participants, while heart rate and oxygen saturation were monitored at the 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th minutes during the exercise. Results Significant altitude-dependent variations were observed in oxidative stress markers, with total oxidant status (TOS) (p = 0.017) and malondialdehyde (MDA) (p < 0.001) levels increasing at higher altitudes, while total antioxidant status (TAS) (p < 0.001) exhibited an elevation and oxidative stress index (OSI) (p < 0.001) demonstrated a decline as altitude increased. However, no significant difference was found in creatine kinase (CK, p = 0.059) levels. Additionally, there were significant differences in the oxygen saturation measurement taken at the 3rd (p < 0.001), 6th (p < 0.001), 9th (p < 0.001), and 12th (p < 0.001), minutes following the exercise session. There was no difference in the pulse measurement taken at the 3rd and 12th minutes, but a difference was observed at the 6th and 9th minutes post-exercise (p < 0.01). Conclusions In conclusion, the study determined that endurance exercises performed under simulated normobaric hypoxia at different altitudes increased TAS and reduced OSI in elite long-distance runners. The increase in TAS and the reduction in OSI were more pronounced at higher altitudes, particularly at 2,450 m and 3,200 m, compared to sea level. Immune thrombocytopenic purpura is characterized by increased destruction of antibody-coated platelets in the reticuloendothelial system. In the majority of children with acute ITP, thrombocytopenia occurs within 1 to 3 weeks after an infectious disease. Immune thrombocytopenic purpura may also occur after rubella, rubeola, chickenpox, or live virus vaccination. We generated a TKI-resistant K562 sub-population, K562-IR, under selective imatinib-mesylate pressure. K562-IR cells are CD34(-)/CD38(-), BCR-Abl-independent, proliferate slowly, highly adherent and form intact tumor spheroids. Loss of CD45 and other hematopoietic markers reveal these cells have diverged from their hematopoietic origin. CD34 negativity, high expression of E-cadherin and CD44; decreased levels of CD45 and beta-catenin do not fully confer with the leukemic stem cell (LSC) phenotype. Expression analyses reveal that K562-IR cells differentially express tissue/ organ development and differentiation genes. Our data suggest that the observed phenotypic shift is an adaptive process rendering cells under TKI stress to become oncogene independent. Cells develop transcriptional instability in search for a gene expression framework suitable for new environmental stresses, resulting in an adaptive phenotypic shift in which some cells partially display LSC-like properties. With leukemic/cancer stem cell targeted therapies underway, the difference between treating an entity and a spectrum of dynamic cellular states will have conclusive effects on the outcome.Article Addressing Radiotherapy-Induced Fibrosis: the Potential of Platelet-Rich Plasma and Infliximab for Improved Breast Cancer Management(Springer, 2024) Binici, Serhat; Guven, Mustafa; Ozdemir, Abdulselam; Ilik, Zehra Akman; Demirhan, Birhan; Uygur, Serhat; Iliklerden, Umit HalukBreast cancer treatment encompasses various therapeutic modalities, including surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Breast-conserving surgery has been an integral part of breast cancer management. However, radiotherapy, an important component of breast cancer management, can lead to complications, particularly fibrosis, affecting reconstructive surgery outcomes. We conducted an in vivo study using 48 female Wistar Albino rats, employing segmental mastectomy and radiotherapy to simulate post-mastectomy conditions. The rats were divided into six groups: control, mastectomy, mastectomy + radiotherapy, mastectomy + platelet-rich plasma (PRP) + radiotherapy, mastectomy + infliximab + radiotherapy, and mastectomy + infliximab + PRP + radiotherapy. Edema, hyperemia, inflammation, and fibrosis were assessed as indicators of tissue response. Histopathological analysis revealed that mastectomy + infliximab and mastectomy + infliximab + PRP groups showed significant reductions in fibrosis compared to other groups. Edema, hyperemia, and inflammation were also less severe in these groups compared to the control group. Radiotherapy-induced fibrosis is a major concern in breast reconstruction. Our study suggests that local PRP application and systemic infliximab administration, either alone or in combination, could mitigate the adverse effects of radiotherapy. This approach has the potential to improve reconstructive outcomes in patients undergoing or having the possibility to undergo radiotherapy. This is the first study showing the effectiveness of infliximab and PRP combination on wound healing. The provided experimental rat model might offer guidance for further research. This study provides insights into optimizing outcomes in reconstructive breast surgery, paving the way for further research and clinical studies.
