İngilizce Dil Öğretiminde Kısa Öykünün Kullanımı ve Konuya İlişkin Öğretmen Görüşleri Üzerine Bir Araştırma

Abstract

Evrensel bir dil olan İngilizce'nin öneminin artmasıyla birlikte, dili daha interaktif, hızlı ve kalıcı bir şekilde öğretmenin ve öğrenmenin de önemi artmıştır. Bu sebeple çeşitli yöntem, teknik ve yaklaşımlar kullanılmaya başlanmıştır. Edebiyatın, İngilizce dil öğretimindeki önemi de tam manasıyla bu ihtiyaçtan doğmuştur. 'Bu çalışma söz konusu durumu İngilizce dil öğretiminde kısa öykünün kullanımı ve konuya ilişkin öğretmen görüşleri nelerdir?' başlığıyla incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu araştırmanın temel amacı, alanda asıl oyuncular olan öğretmenlerin konu hakkındaki görüşlerini bütün açıklığı ile gözler önüne sermektir. Çalışma ayrıca kısa öykü kullanımının yabancı dildeki yeri ve önemi üzerine durmuştur. Araştırma nitel yöntemin görüşme tekniği aracılığıyla gerçekleştirilmiştir. İlk olarak görüşmede yer alan soruların belirlenebilmesi için alan uzmanlarından destek alınmıştır. On altı farklı öğretmen ile yapılan görüşme sonucunda, kısa öykünün yabancı dil öğretimindeki yeri araştırılmış ve yadsınamayacak derecede önemli olduğu anlaşılmıştır. Öğretmenlerin görüşlerinden elde edilen bulgulara göre edebiyatın türlerinden biri olan kısa öykünün kullanımı, dil öğretimini hem kolaylaştırmıştır hem de daha eğlenceli hale getirmiştir. Ancak, müfredatın yoğunluğu, öğrencilerin derse karşı olan ilgi ve tutumları, ailelerin sosyo-ekonomik durumları ve sınıfların kalabalık olması gibi olumsuz etkenler nedeniyle, kısa öykü anlatımının uygulama aşamasında çeşitli dezavantajlar barındırdığı katılımcılar tarafından ortak bir görüş olarak ifade edilmiştir.

English is a universal language, so it is becoming more and more important to teach and learn the language in a more interactive, efficient, and long-lasting method. For this reason, various strategies, techniques, and approaches have begun to be used. It was precisely from this requirement that literature became important in English language teaching. This study aims to look at the situation in question, 'The usage of short stories in ELT and what are the teachers' views on the topic?'. The primary goal of this study is to clearly present the viewpoints of teachers, who are the key participants in the field, on the topic. The role and significance of utilizing short stories in a foreign language were also examined in the study. The qualitative method was used in this research. Initially, support was received from the field experts to determine the questions in the interview. After conducting interviews with sixteen distinct teachers, the role of the short stories in foreign language teaching was examined, and it became clear that the role of the short story is unquestionably significant. According to the findings obtained from the teachers' opinions, using short stories, a literature technique, has made language teaching easier and more fun. However, it has been expressed as a common view that short stories have various disadvantages in its application phase due to negative factors such as the intensity of the curriculum, students' interest and attitudes towards the course, the socio-economic status of the families and the density of the classes.
