Abstract
In this study the role of oxygen free radicals in the etiopathogenesis of Acute Rheumatic Fever (ARF) in childhood was investigated. We conducted this study in the Department of Pediatric Cardiology in Yuzuncu Yıl Universty, Faculty of medicine, from 2007 to 2008. Fourty patients with an age range of 5 to 16 years and 20 healty children were included.Blood which had taken for Reductated glutathion, Malondialdehit, E vitamine, C vitamine, Retinol and ß-caroten levels was studied.Reductated glutathion and ß-caroten levels at time of diagnosis compared to that of control group was found statistical signicantly (p<0,05). Malondialdehit levels were significantly high at time of diagnosis, after treatment and control group. In this study, we conclude that the oxygen free radicals may play an important role in the etiopathogenesis of ARF
